摘要:《雾都孤儿》是查尔斯狄更斯的一部伟大的批判现实主义的小说。它以维多利亚为时代背景,主要反映了刚刚通过济贫法的英国社会最底层人民的生活,揭露了社会弊端与社会问题,带有很强的讽刺意义。本文主要分析《雾都孤儿》的积极的社会意义。首先通过深入分析当时维多利亚的社会背景,揭露社会现实;随后与现代社会的现状作比较,论述小说给我们现代人的启发,以 《雾都孤儿》这部作品具有深远的社会至对整个社会发展带来的推动作用;从而得出结论,意义。关键词:《雾都孤儿》 维多利亚时代 积极的 社会意义
The Progressive Social Significance of Oliver Twist Abstract The Progressive Social Significance ofOliver Twist Abstract Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’s most famous novels of critical realism.Thenovel is set in Victorian Age which mainly reflects the life of citizens at the bottom ofsociety in England where the Poor Law had just been passed.With the exposure ofsocial shortcomings and problems the novel is written in strong irony.This paper mainly looks into the progressive significance of the OliverTwist.Atthe beginning the paper deeply analyzes the social background of the Victorian Ageand uncovers the social reality.Then through the comparison with the currentsituation of modern society the paper discusses the enlightenment which we get fromthe novel and even the impetus function to the development of the whole society.Finally a conclusion is drawn that Oliver Twist has a far-reaching social significance.Key words: Oliver Twist Victorian Age Progressive Social subject I have ever thought of I have thrown my wholeheart and soul into Oliver.” “I wished to show in littleOliver the principle of goodsurviving through every adverse circumstance and triumphing at last.”.Dickens oncewrote.1 Oliver Twist was Dickens’ second novel which marked the beginning ofDickens’ literary life.In the novel Dickens specifically described the terrible life ofthe people at the bottom of society.This novel was a vivid picture of social conditionof England.And it also exposed the cruelty of parish workhouse through depicting thelittle Oliver Twist’s childhood in it.In the novel Dickens pointed out the suffering ofthose poor people.He called readers’ attention to the social status of the orphan.Especially the exposure of the cruel treatment of those orphans in London in the novelis very impressive.Oliver Twist was a very serious literary work which was full of social problems.As a social novel the novel calls the public’s attention to various contemporary evilsincluding the Poor Law that stated that poor people should work in workhouses childlabor and the recruitment of children as criminals.In Oliver Twist Dickens mixes grim realism and merciless satire as a way todescribe the effects of industrialism on 19th-century England and to criticize the harshNew Poor Laws.Dickens also makes a social commentary in the novel attacking thehypocrisy and flaws of institutions including the society’s government the laws andcriminal system and its methods of dealing with poor people.At the same timeDickens points out the suffering inflicted by these systems and their deep injustice.Even in the modern society such kind of unequal phenomenon can also befound.The social reality and the realistic pictures of the horrible life of the poor 1people inspire most of the readers to deeply think about the social reform which caneliminate the inequality and discrimination.And especially its social significance was very important for the citizens wholive in the modern society of 21st century.So this paper through the deep analysis ofsocial reality in Victorian Age and the modern society mainly talks about theprogressive social significance of Oliver Twist.2 I.A General Introduction to the Author Charles DickensA.Life Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on February7th 1812 at 13 Mile EndTerrace Portsmouth England.He was the second child and first son of John Dickenswho was an assistant clerk in the Navy Pay Office.But his father had spent too muchmoney in entertaining and at the same time the household expenses were rising.So in1824 he was imprisoned for debt when Dickens was very young.And his familyjoined him in the Marshal Sea Prison except Dickens who was put to work at ablacking warehouse when he was just twelve.He worked at the scanty wage of 6shillings a week.He lived in a boarding house in Camden Town and walked to workeveryday and visited his father on Sundays.Thus he had a sense of having beenabandoned by his family.And this was the unhappy time of all his life.After his fatherwas released he was further wounded by his mother’s insistence that he continue towork at the factory.His unhappy experience at the Blacking Factory haunted him allhis life and he spoke of it only to his wife and to his closest friend.B.Writing Career Between 1824 and 1827 Dickens was a day pupil at a school in London.Atfifteen he found a job as an office boy at an attorney’s while he studied shorthand atnight.And this qualified him to begin working as a Parliamentary reporter for anewspaper.This job was the beginning of his career of becoming a writer.During thattime he published several sketches in magazines including the two-volume edition ofSketches by Boz which were very popular.But it was not until he wrote The PickwickPapers in 1836-1837 that he achieved the true success.The Pickwick Papers waspublished in monthly installments and sold over forty thousand copies for each issue.3 From 1838 to1841 appeared Oliver Twist Nicholas Nickleby The Old CuriosityShop and Barnaby Rudge.These were Dickens’ early work.In 1842 Dickens made atrip to America and his unfavorable impressions of the life in the U.S.A.werereflected in American Notes and Martin Chuzzleuit.In 1843 Dickens published oneof his most famous works A Christmas Carol.Since 1844 he had spent much time inthe European Continent especially in France and Italy.The great social movements inthe middle of the 19th century inspired Dickens’ famous novels of social criticismDavid Copperfield Bleak House Hard Times and Little Dorrit.At the same time hewas editing Household Words 1852-1859 the Entire Year Round1859-1870 twoweekly magazines.Dickens was widely read in Europe and in 1858 he set off on a tour of publicreadings.In 1859 he published his historical novel of the French Revolution A Taleof Two Cities which were followed by some novels on contemporary themes GreatExpectations and Our Mutual Friend.During his lifetime Dickens was known all over the world for his remarkablecharacters his mastery of prose in the telling of the common people’s lives and hisdepictions of the social classes and his exposure of dark sides of the society.And hewas also a spokesman for the poor.Dickens’ health started deteriorating in the 1860s.On June 9 1870 CharlesDickens died and was buried in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey.He hadwritten fifteen substantial novels and countless short pieces except The Mystery ofEdwin Drood which was unfinished at the time of his death.And his tomb inscribedthus: “He was a sympathizer to the poor the suffering and the oppressed and by hisdeath one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”C.Writing Style Dickens is a great humanitarian.He shows the sympathy for different class ofcitizens who suffer the misery of social inequality.And he demonstrates the people’s 4kind and beautiful soul in the novel.Meantime Dickens ruthlessly exposes the darkreality and depicts social evils as well as the abuse and corruption of the Englishparliamentary system.Besides the exposure and condemnations Dickens also showsthe concern for the plight of the common the poor and the oppressed people andfeels the hatred for the exploitation of the upper class.However in the conflictedworld of the good and the evil he always adds the hope of future to the world so thatthe reader could have the impression of the moral purity: He sees life from the point of view of the poor of a great city.He shows great concern about social problems supports all proposals for social reform advocates an increase of democracy in all spheres of life and champions the cause of the oppressed.Dickens maintains an unbroken faith in people with an entire pessimism as to capitalist society.His love for the working people is deep and sincere.2 In the aspect of art Dickens is an expert in the satire and the humor.He is goodat portraying the main feature by the way of irony humor and exaggeration so thatmost of the characters in his novels can leave unforgettable impression on the reader’smind.Also he is a remarkable master of language.Dickens has a large amount ofvocabulary and the astonishing skills of controlling language.All the characters hedepicts usually have certain peculiarities in appearance or in the style of speaking.And it is these peculiarities that make them vivid and alive.5 II.A Brief Introduction to the Novel Oliver TwistA.General Outline of the Novel Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’s most well-known works of critical realism.Theevent in the story mainly happened in England in the 19th century.Oliver Twist is born into a life of poverty and misfortune in a workhouse.Hismother whose name no one knows is found on the street and dies just after Oliver’sbirth.Then he is sent to a workhouse where he is poorly fed and mistreated.At theworkhouse he asks for more food by making a very famous request “Please sir Iwant some more.’’.And this behavior leads him into a big trouble.After that Mr.Bumble the parish beadle decides to give five pounds to anyone who would takeOliver as an apprentice.Later Mr.Sowerberry an undertaker comes to take Oliverinto his service.He treats Oliver better but his wife dislikes Oliver and alwaysmistreats him.What is worse he suffers torment from the Noah Clay pole and fellowappetence and Charlotte the Sowerberry’s maid servant.One day because of thesevere insults and the abuse he runs away.Then he comes to the London.Through seven days of walking he is veryexhausted and starved.Then he encounters Jack Dawkins a boy his own age.Jackoffers him shelter in the London house of an old man Fagin.And then the innocentOliver Twist falls into a gang of pickpockets led by Fagin.And the other chiefmembers are the burglar Bill Sikes his mistress Nancy and the Artful Doger a youngpickpocket.They teach Oliver to pickpocket and make every effort to convert Oliverinto a thief.After a few days of training Oliver is sent on a pick pocketing missionwith two other boys.When he sees them pick a handkerchief from an elderlygentleman he is horrified and runs away.Then he is caught but narrowly escapesbeing convicted of the theft.Mr.Brownlow the man whose handkerchief was stolen 6takes Oliver to his home and takes good care of him.But the two members of Fagin’gangs Bill Sikes and Nancy catch him again and make him join them once again.A mysterious person named Monks has a special interest in Oliver and keepshim in the gang so that Oliver could become a criminal.Then Oliver is forced toparticipate in a task of burgling with Bill Sikes.But in the process of burgling OliverTwist is shot by a servant of the house and is seriously wounded by the gun-shot.Then he is taken in by the women who live there Mrs.Maylie and her beautifuladopted niece Rose.They grow fond of Oliver and Oliver spends a happy summerwith them.But Fagin and Monks are planning to recapture Oliver.After a time when the Mayflies come to London the mistress Nancy comes tovisit Miss Rose secretly and informs her of Monks’ plot.But a member of F.

《雾都孤儿》,是英国作家狄更斯于1838年出版的写实小说。以雾都伦敦为背景,讲述了一个孤儿悲惨的身世及遭遇,主人公奥立弗在孤儿院长大,经历学徒生涯,艰苦逃难,误入贼窝,又被迫与狠毒的凶徒为伍,历尽无数辛酸,最后在善良人的帮助下,查明身世并获得了幸福。是一个悲惨而温情的故事。小说的主人公奥利弗·退斯特,是一名生在济贫院的孤儿,忍饥挨饿,备受欺凌,由于不堪棺材店老板娘、教区执事邦布尔等人的虐待而独自逃往伦敦,不幸刚一到达就受骗误入贼窟。窃贼团伙的首领费尽千方百计,企图把奥利弗训练为扒手供他驱使。奥利弗跟随窃贼伙伴“机灵鬼”和贝兹上街时,被误认为他偷了一位叫布朗的绅士(恰巧是他父亲生前的好友)的手绢而被警察逮捕。后因书摊老板证明了他的无辜,由于他当时病重昏迷,且容貌酷似友人生前留下的一副少妇画像,布朗收留他在家中治病,得到布朗及其女管家比德温太太无微不至的关怀,第一次感受到人间的温暖。窃贼团伙害怕奥利弗会泄露团伙的秘密,趁奥利弗外出替布朗归还书摊老板的图书的时候用计使他重新陷入了贼窟。费金用威胁、利诱、灌输等手段企图迫使奥利弗成为一名窃贼,成为费金的摇钱树。但是小奥利弗都不为所动,被费金囚禁了三个月。一天黑夜,奥利弗在塞克斯的胁迫下参加对一座大宅院的行窃。正当奥利弗准备趁爬进窗户的机会向主人报告时,被
管家发现后开枪打伤。好心的主人梅莱夫人及其养女露丝小姐收留并庇护了他。无巧不成书,这位罗斯小姐正是奥利弗的姨妈,但双方都不知道。在梅丽夫人家,奥利弗真正享受到了人生的温馨和美好。但费金团伙却不能放过奥利弗。一个名叫蒙克斯的人是奥利弗的同父异母兄长,由于他的不肖,他父亲在遗嘱中将全部遗产给了奥利弗,为霸占奥利弗名下的全部遗产,并发泄自己对已去世的父亲的怨恨,他与费金勾结陷害奥利弗。南希偶然听见他们的秘密,同情奥利弗的遭遇,冒生命危险,偷偷找到露丝小姐,向她报告了这一切。
罗斯小姐和布朗商议了处理方法,费金团伙遭到了灭顶之灾。费金被捕,后上了绞刑架,塞克斯在逃窜中失足被自己的绳子勒死。与此同时,蒙克斯被布朗挟持到家中,逼他供出了一切,小奥利弗的身世之谜真相大白,奥利弗被布朗收为养子,从此结束了他的苦难的童年。为了给蒙克斯自新的机会,把本应全归奥利弗继承的遗产分一半给他。但蒙克斯劣性不改,把家产挥霍殆尽,继续作恶,终被锒铛入狱,死在狱中。邦布尔夫妇恶有恶报,被革去一切职务,一贫如洗,在他们曾经作威作福的济贫院度过余生。
在这本书中,奥利弗、南希、罗斯小姐都是善良的代表,小奥利佛·退斯特与众多的教区孤儿相比,他并无过人之处,是什么让他坚忍,怎样的生活困境都不曾将他击倒?在教区里他坚强的生活了下来,在费金的贼窝里,他没有沾上他们一丝恶习,无论是软是硬,他都没有屈服走上偷窃道路。他一直怀揣着一颗善良的心,想方设法回到布朗先生那解释他的不告而别,他不愿自己被误会;细心照料生病的露丝,为她祈祷;在得知小狄克去世的消息时,他哭得很伤心、、、小奥利弗才十岁,出生于苦难之中,他之前从没有得到过亲情友情的关爱与照顾,在他所接触的社会环境里,充满了黑暗污浊。在黑暗和充满罪恶的世界中成长,但在他的心中始终保持着一片纯洁的天地,一颗善良的心,种种磨难并不能使他们堕落或彻底堕落,反而更显示出他们出污泥而不染的光彩夺目的晶莹品质。而机灵鬼和查理·贝兹们呢?他们和奥利佛一样是孤儿,在差不多一样的年纪里落入费金的贼窝里,为生活所逼,被费金所诱,他们走上了偷窃之路、、、、一样的遭遇不一样的选择,到底是环境生活的不得已,还是自己内心的脆弱?很多时候我们抱怨这社会这世界,可是不是也要怪怪自己呢?
《雾都孤儿》,教区管理者的伪劣与丑恶,盗贼的狠毒与凶残,包围在雾都伦敦的是一个个陷阱,可幸善良的小奥利弗在这雾都里找到了关怀与爱。在狄更斯看来,这世界还是美好多于丑恶,还是邪不可压正,还是一个值得我们去爱的家园!

寒假里,老师让我们阅读了三本书,它们分别是《小王子》、《秘密花园》、《雾都孤儿》。其中我最喜欢看《雾都孤儿》,它的作者是19世纪英国现实主义文学大师查尔斯。狄更斯。狄更斯一生共创作了14部长篇小说,许多中、短篇小说,还有杂文、游记、戏剧、小品等,对英国文学发展起着重要影响。
《雾都孤儿》的主人公叫奥利弗,他出生在济贫院,在那里整天被教区执事班布尔先生、表面温文尔雅实则凶狠恶毒的曼太太欺负。后来一个叫诺亚的人侮辱了他的妈妈,他打了诺亚之后,那家人要班布尔先生抽打他。小奥利不得不连夜逃往伦敦。结果被人带到了盗贼窝,那些人强迫他盗窃,不然就杀死他。小奥利被迫跟着他们盗窃。有一次他逃了出来,但又被盗贼的姘妇给抓了回去。小奥利最终逃离了盗贼窝,被一个家庭收养了,过上了幸福的生活,而那些害他的盗贼也罪有应得。
通过读《雾都孤儿》这本书,我要学习小奥利的勇敢,他身处盗贼窝,却不怕盗贼要杀死他的威胁,坚决不做坏事,并想尽办法,勇敢地逃离出来。我还要学习他的善良,在露丝小姐快病死的时候,小奥利安慰她照顾她,使露丝小姐活了下来。我更要学习他的坚强,他能忍受着从小失去父母亲的痛苦,忍受着寒冷和饥饿,忍受着很大的冤屈,笑着面对生活,一路坚强走下去。
我要学习小奥利的勇敢、善良和坚强,改正自己的缺点,坚持做好每一件事,努力提高学习成绩,做一名好学生。
