I can never forget the summer in 1996.I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination.It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true.One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone).Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it.Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate‖.Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me.I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true.Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school.Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them.I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better.But others have been through much worse.Then they will build up fortitude.So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength.Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it.Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate.Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.我能挺过去的

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest.When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak.I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say.My fears had paralyzed me.While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public.When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience.He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart.I will never forget his words.―Look,‖ he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours.You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again.Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will.A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.‖

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind.Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right.Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone.My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears--and that makes all the difference!

Ladies and gentlemen，We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast.We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry.Take my major telecommunications for example.Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time.But without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far.Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines.So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering;it is in the full community of learning.Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgrounds.The engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts.How wonderful that is!That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture.My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about.Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: ―The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity，is the greatest symbol of a university’s success.‖ Thank you.知识的融合和人才的全面发展

What do you think of this story? Good afternoon, everybody.I just want to say a few words about the landmark vote that the House of Representatives is poised to（随时准备着）take today--a vote that can bring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable（支付得起）health care for the American people.For the better part of a year now, members of the House and the Senate have been working diligently（勤奋地）and constructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions of American families and millions of American businesses who urgently need it.For the first time ever, they've passed bills through every single committee responsible for reform.They've brought us closer than we have ever been to passing health insurance reform on behalf of the American people.Now is the time to finish the job.The bill that the House has produced will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance;quality, affordable options for those who don't;and lower costs for American families and American businesses.And as I've insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fully paid for and will actually reduce our long-term federal deficit（赤字，不足）.This bill is change that the American people urgently need.Don't just take my word for it.Consider the national groups who've come out in support of this bill on behalf of their members: The Consumers Union supports it because it will create--and I quote--”a more secure, affordable health care system for the American people."
