Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all.When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university.And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate.How pathetic!When we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic.Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be “fulfilled”? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called “reality”? What IS the reality actually?
Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies.Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, “man could not fly” was still regarded as the “reality”.Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.People say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams.And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality;People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality;4)Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance IS the reality.Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? Please raise your hands.Oh, quite a number of you!Actually, ladies and gentlemen, this is not a dream, but a task.Every one of us has to make a living, right? C.S.Lewis once said, “You are never too old to dream a new dream.” So for our future, please dream and be unrealistic.Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences.But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future.One day, people living in the areas now 6)sweltering with the horror of wars will be able to sit with their families and enjoy their every moment.One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries and those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves.One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance and the unfriendly confrontations among them will be 7)eliminated.One day, the globe will share the dream with me and we will all contribute to making our dream come true.One day, our dream will defeat the reality!Thank you very much.第十届21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛冠军——夏鹏 Thank you ladies and gentlemen.My topic today is “Walls and Bridges”.I'm studying in a city famous for its city walls.All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines.With old cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city.Our ancestors liked to build walls.They built walls in Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great wall which snakes through half of our country.They built walls to ward off the enemies and evil spirits.This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many schools and parks walled off from the public.I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and I have been loving them since my childhood.For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world.My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city.My classmates and I were walking with some international students.As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees which formed a huge canopy above our heads.Suddenly an international student asked me, “where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?” “We’re already in the Eastern Suburbs,” I replied.He seemed taken aback.“I thought you Chinese have walls for everything.” His remark set off a heated debate.At one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while I insisted that the Eastern Suburbs was one of the many places in China that had no walls.That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student.For instance, he told me universities like oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls, the campuses were just a part of the cities.I have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible.We will tear down some walls, and we will keep some of them.Let me give you an example.A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library.However, the library turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying “you can’t borrow this book.You are not a student here.” In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan buying a copy, meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf.At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university had started not only to unify all its libraries but also to link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experience will not be repeated.Barriers will be replaced by bridges.Through an inter-library loan system, we will have access to books from any library.With globalization, with china integrates into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it’s hard for us to say whether it is good or bad.But one thing for sure, it draws our attention to china’s physical and intangible walls and force us to examine their in the modern world.Then what about the walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite.My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls.These walls now attract not only historians and archeologists, but also schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage.The walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world.If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such a great change in the roles of their walls.They are now cultural bridges that link East and West, South and North and all the countries of the world.Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen.第十一届全国英语演讲比赛 第二名 吴相臣

I have a friend who just started his career as a teacher in a primary school.Weeks ago,he came and ask me to raise a topic for his mid-term composition test。I was curious why he chose me,because he is a teacher himself.My friend said that he wanted something that the student can really show their different ideas.Without thingking,I asked him to let the students to write about what they would do if they were given one million U.S.dollars.My friend left with salisfaction and I fell into my old memories.It reminded me of my time in primary school.In our Chinese class,our teather required us to write a composition with the topic.“My most unforgettable day”with our real experience.When papers came back.half of the students wrote about the first day they came to school,The reat were all about picking up money on the streets and give it to policemen or helping a blind man cross the street.of course,I was among them.But I remember very clearly that one student,Only one student,gave something different:He wrote about the day that he first kissed a girl.I read his composition.After all these years,I cant remember every word ,but I dare to say that shake spear may not be able to write equally well when he was 11years old.But the kid was scored zero.The composition was written out of real experience and genuine emotion.But our teacher thought the content was “unhealthy”,I am sure you know the chinglish meaning of this woed “unhealthy”.That was 15 years ago.you read about these compositions and you feel that half of our populations are blind,soall these kids can have a chance to help a blind man cross the street and every one of us has a hole in our pocket,So all these kids can have a chance to pick up lost money and give it to policemen.A few days ago,my friend send me an e-mail of all the copies of his students compositions.I have to say,I was sally disillusioned,Among those papers,40% students said that they would like to donate their money to people in poveny so their children can have a chance to go to school.The rest were much more alike.Some wanted to support the panda protection project and some wanted to buy books to enlarge their knowledge.One student even said that he would like to spend his one million U.S.dollars on the effert to cure AIDS.I was more than astonished to know that a ten-year-old child knew what AIDS really is.Of course,that was a long time ago.It has always been our dream to open the hearts of children.We enciyrage them to cleseribe their dream and we act in the way as if we are always ready to accept their thoughts.however,children are scared by the zero marked on their papers.They are trained to say what we want to hear.People compare children to flowers of tomorrow.And parents do dream about the scenery that roses,tulips.daffodils flourish in the future.but down the road we are going on in the future,or the future of future,only one kind of flower can be found.And that is the flower we like most.Thank you.第十一届全国英语演讲比赛 第五名 廖若琛
After thinking for a long time, I realize it’s not a good idea to downsize the topic form “our future” to “any individual’s future”.But since I actually did it, I thought it couldn’t be any worse if I intend to talk about history all over my speech.As I perfectly agree with Shakespeare in “what’s past is prologue”.And this prologue starts our play for the future.So our story, at the beginning, takes us back to Thomas Edison.Many would say Edison’s greatest invention the light bulb, is the result of a determined course accompanied by hand labor and the spirit of never giving up.As we all know he said “a genius is 1% of inspiration with 99% of perspiration.But the amusing fact was Edison actually stumbled across the phenomenon that electric-currents would heat up fibers and then glow when he was working with his gramophone.So light bulb, we can say is an “unintentional invention”.Yes you might point out that mirror thing in his mother’s operation story could has worked as an incentive for him to dream of something brighter.But it is hard to imagine that little boy as he was holding the mirror in front of candles saying to himself : I’m going to invent something call “light bulb” someday.I guess not, most likely that what we got is a bigger candle, so the future can not be planned, sometimes no even the way we dream of it.In our pursuit for success, it is a match that favors neither the swift nor the strong, but time and chances.As mark twain said “name the greatest inventors: accident”.But why do we still call these inventors great when all they need was a little luck? They are great because they did not live by their lucks, their greatness came form another thing: perseverance.Back to Edison, anyone working with electricity couldn’t have missed the phenomenon-heated up wire is a daily occurrence.But it was Edison – and Edison only who tried out more than a thousand materials and got about the same number of failures and succeeded in the end.Chances help those who help themselves.If Edison had been an opportunist, most likely he would live the rest of his life selling light bulbs.But he didn’t, indeed sometimes that however much perspiration you have paid that 1% of inspiration just dose not strike your head, like my experience in writing my speech.But more often the case is than those who had the 1% of inspiration wasted it in their daydreaming.So luck alone-like being a big winner in a casino-that makes you rich, but it dose not make you great.It is what you do with the chance that makes a difference.So after such a long prologue, the play is still left to us to finish and this is a play we never got tired of for future is a stage of infinite tales.And to all the great directors of our future play, remember this question, do we each have a destiny or are we just rather flowing an accident life in the breeze? Good afternoon,ladies and gentlemen.My topic today is “Never lose the vision of the reality”.Talking about dreams and future, I would say dreams should never be too far away from reality.Detaching from reality,laking solid or pratical actions any future plan or dream project will be nothing short of daydreaming,or, at most, well-intentioned thinking.Here I am reminded the year of 2000, when 191 member states of the United Nations held a World Summit Conference, which make a declaration known as the Millennium Development Goals.The goals of 2015, which every member state pledged to meet, were such as, elimination of hunger and poverty, drastic reduction in child mortality rates, reversing a spread of AIDS and other deadly diseases, etc.Now, six years later, almost half way to the final year of 2015, do we see any signs of realizing these goals? Today, half the world-about three billion people, still live under two U.S.dollars a day;about 270 million children have no access to safe water, 11 million children die before they reach the age of five each year.Do we come to harness the spread of AIDS? The answer is also “no”-and indeed AIDS is spreading faster and wider than ever before.What is even worse, with the wake of the Iraqi War, the nuclear crisis in Iran and unsettled situations in many places, the visions of us young people today are often limited-but the limited vision that we do have and care about every day cannot change the conviciton that this world does not seem to promise a very bright future before us.Who is to blame for all this? Of course we can blame the governments:how they„disappointing they all seem to be: in one moment they are pledging to build a better future for us, and the other moment they’re igniting wars, killing more innocent people.But don’t you think we ordinary folks should also take some responsibilities for, say, elimination of hunger and poverty? When we are quickly rushing to schools, work, or places of entertainment, how many times do we stop just to hand over some food to the deprived on the streets? When we are reading newspaper, browsing for news about what is going on in this world, how often do we stop to think about actual ways that we can do to help the people who’re suffering from various disastrous situations? In fact, how much have we done to help the people who are in need just around us?
Dreams are certainly beautiful and indispensable in our life, for they give us inspiration and motivaition.Future plans are certainly necessary, for they provide us with goals and guides.But what is most beautiful„and „ important is an action on a day-to-day basis.In order to realize our dreams or make our future goals realized, we need to put our words into deeds and base our vision on reality.In other words, while human beings should be, first and foremost, idealists and thinkers, we should also be, and all the more, realists and practical doers.Thank you.第十一届全国英语演讲比赛 第七名 王默
Honorable judges,distinguished guests,ladies and gentlemen,good afternoon.We are only seven minutes from Doomsday.In February 2002,the Doomsday Clock,on which midnight represents destruction by nuclear war, was moved two minutes ahead.Now, humankind is only seven minutes from nuclear annihilation.Ladies and gentlemen,I believe world peace is a dream cherished by each and every decent human being.Yet the reality is that there has never been a time in history when we are so vulnerable.The fear of nuclear proliferation,the fear of the spread of weapons of mass destrution to many more countries is on the rise.Nuclear weapons are the enemies of humanity.Their effects transcend time and space ,poisoningthe earth and its inhabitants for generations to come.A single nuclear bomb can be thousand times more devastating than the largest conventional explosives.A single nuclear weapon can ruin tons of soil and vegetation.A single nuclear weapon can dedtroy an entire city of over 120,000 defenseless civilians and leave about twice that number of people to die in slow agony.Nuclear weapons ,with their indiscriminate, massive destructive power,can now destroy the world several times over.Terrified by the catasrophic power of nuclear weapons,I dare not think what the world would be like if this dark and monstrous power should fall into wrong hands.If Adolf Hitler's tyrannical regime had acquired the first functioning nuclear weapon,history would have to be rewritten.And even worse,what if the terrorists go nuclear? What if the perpetrators of the Sept.11th horrors,whose intent to inflict destruction is unconstrained by human feelings;and whose capacity to inflict is enlarged by technology,could strike again and this time with “dirty bomb”?If we hesittate in the face of the threat,when we should have acted as early as possible,then we are condemned to live under ever lasting lament and horror.Hence,the time has come has come for us to do something.Together in partnership,we should stem the tide of nuclear proliferation for human security and survival.It is time for us to turn down the heat on nuclear dangers by endorsing the Non-Proliferation Treaty,and establishing nuclear-free Zones.And more importantly,we should integrate non-proliferation efforts into our education,so that the next generation will learn more about nuclear dangers and their inherent risks and they would understand better than us that human future is as much about scientific advancements and enviromental protection as it is about arsenals.Ladies and genetlemen,in a time when there's a dark cloud hanging over the future of humanity,when our hope for a peaceful world may be broken,we've got to work together to change the situation.We've got to integrate our efforts into Non-Proliferation regime.And we've got to make it better.And ladies and genetlemen,I know you may say I am a dreamer, but I'd say I'm not the only one.I hope some day you'll join us.And the world will live as one.Thank you very much.第十一届全国英语演讲比赛 第十名 赵婷

Good morning , ladies and gentlemen!Before Chinese and Western civilization came into close contact , the Chinese people had always longed for a life depicted in traditional Chinese paintings.Those paintings present a harmonious coexistence of people and other life forms.Regarded as the essence of ancient Chinese philosophies , harmony has been deeply rooted in the minds of the Chinese people.On the one hand , it has contributed to the unique continuity of Chinese civilization.On the other , Chinese people became too much contented with their achievement to desire any further changes.As globalization deepens.it is bound to affect our ideal of harmony.First , globalization urges China to speed up its modernization , which threatens our regard for the harmony between Man and Nature.For instance , many dams and hydropower stations are being built for economic benefits at the expense of the well-preserved natural habitats.However , ecological malpractice of such kind goes against the notion of hamonious coexistence in ancient Chinese philosophies.More than 2000 years ago , long before the concept of environmental protection came into being.Dujiang Weir , a great irrigation project was built in southwestern China's Sichuan province.It succeeded both in controlling floods and in facilitating the agriculture without posing a threat to the environment.Moreover , globalization has brought with it intense competition , which threatens our regard for the harmony among people.Traditionally , moderation is a golden principle , presiding over inter-personal relations in China.Today , however , motivated to come to the top , some people become so self-centered that they choose to sacrifice love , friendship and even family ties.Last but not least , diverse cultures have met in China as a consequence of globalization.Therefore , a clash of cultures becomes inevitable.Unfortunately , the past decades have witnessed a huge loss of cultural heritage in China.In cities , like Beijing and Xi'an , hundreds of century-old Chinese-style houses are being demolished to make room for skyscrapers , shopping malls and eight-lane expressways.From these examples , we see the dishamony brought about by globalization.Yet it is not globalization that is to blame , but rather our altitude.As long as we approach globalization with hamony in mind , its benefit will outweigh its cost.Take my hometown , Hangzhou , for example.Thanks to the strenuous efforts made by the municipal government in achieving eco-development , various kinds of water birds have refurned to the West Lake , calling it home again after years of migratin elsewhere.From the lake bank , we see skateboarders and trick cyclists showing off together with people flying kites and kicking shuttlecocks on the plaza nearby.Therefore , although they compose a picture quite distinct from traditional Chinese paitings , this picture conveys a modern sense of harmony in this era of globalization.Ladies and gentlement , to conclude , I would like to quote from British philisopher Bertrand Russell.In contrasting Chinese and Western civilizations , he observed “ The distinctive merit of western civilization is the scientific method;the distinctive merit of the Chinese is a just conception of the ends of life.It is these two that one must hope to see gradually uniting.As we see the tremendous progress China has been making drawing on experience abroad , we may also expect the traditional Chinese value of harmony to enrich the world.I look forward to the time when Russell's prophecy comes true.Thank you very much.第十二届全国英语演讲比赛 第2名 钟石 中国传媒大学

I'm from Sichuan Province,which is also the place pandas come from.Last synner,I volunteered to be a tour guide for a group of kids from a rural elemenary school, who had been invited by the Chengdu Giamt Panda Breeding Center to see the pandas.Halfway through our trip, a little boy told me that he thought the pandas' home looked a bit dirty and asked whenther he could clean their enclosures.I was surprised that this boy,who was so desperately in need of help himself,was thinking of helping the giant pandas.I had voluteered to offer him my time and knowledge, and he had volunteered to provide the pandas with a feeling of human warmth.Though different in form both types of help meant something to the respectivers.Many people have an outdated perception of volunteer work associating it with the 19th century ideal of charitable deeds done by the haves for the have-nots.However offering help today does not require that one have money,knowledge or materials, and therefore the right to perform volunteer work is not these people.The volunteering spirit she manifested was a natural flow of affection towards people in need and was rellected in every thy thing she had done for each of these five elderly people over the years.Her example teacher us that the essence and power of the volunteering spirit is not only in offering help to anyone,but also in doing so whenever and indeed,whenever it is needed.In practical terms,this means that we do not have to wait until the tree-planting day to plant a tree for the beeterment of environment.Likewise , we don't have to wait untill the trudami hits the headliness to help poor people living in south Asia,and we do not have to wait untill the Olympic Games begin to show our hospitality to jour foreign visitors.Wilston Churchill once said.”We make a living what we get;we make a life by what we give.“

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen,good afternoon.I believe we need a longer March in China.On March 5th, 2005,I volunteered to visit an orphanage with may classmates.The kids there were very excited about our visit and we had a great time together.A little girl impressed me most.She followed me everywhere and kept asking me questions of all kinds.Before we left the orphanage, I said to the little girl ,”Maybe, I can make one of your wishes come true.If you had just one wish, what would it be?“ After a short hesitation, she replied,” I wish......I wish every month was March, because you won't come back to me after March.Nobody comes back to me after March.“ I was shocked by her answer.I felt great pain inside and realized that something was not going right.The month of March is called ”the Month of Lei Feng in China.“ Lei Feng was a Chinese soldior admired for his willness to help others.In memory of him, it is advocated that we do some voluntary work in March.Is there anything wrong with ”the month of Lei Feng? Of course not.Helping others through voluntary work is a glorious tradition we should always treasure.However ,one month alone, is not enough to keep the little girl's heart warm throughout the year, one month alone, is not enough to bring our love and care to those who are always in need.We need a longer March in China.March should last all year round.What can we do to achieve this goal,then? What can we do to make the little girl's dream come true? Here two of my suggestions.The first is, we should continue to promote the idea that when we give, we also receive.We should be grateful to those who need our love and care, for it is through helping them that we receive acknowledgement and respect, and it is through helping them that we realize our personal value and achieve a sense of belonging.I feel grateful to those children in the orphanage.I t was thses children who helped me realize that I am useful and I am needed.My second suggestion is, everybody, if possible , should start doing voluntary work right now.Do not wait until you are free.Do not wait until you get rich.Take action now ,and make a commitment to it.Maybe our small donation to poor children won't immediately change their fates.Maybe our smiles we bring to the patients fighting against cancer won't immediately relieve their pain.But ,I believe, our consistent and constant efforts throughout the year will surely bring voluntary work in China toward a better future.Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, we are approaching the end of March.When March is over , do we stop giving love and care to those who need it ? When March is over , do we pack up our volunteer spirit and store it in the closet until next year? When I was little ,I was so idealistic that I dreamed of helping the world by ending world hunger.As I grew up ,thinking that i was too insigificant to affect change ,I just let go of my dream.In all these years,I observed that the older I got ,the less I helped.Why ?Whether I had legitimate reasons or apologetic excuses ,it remains that I didn't held much as i wanted to.How many of you ,like me ,had grand dreams of affecting the lives of millions of people ?How many of you ,like me，started turning your attention inward the older ou got ?How many of you ,like me，became less and less idealistic and more and more pessimistic about the ability of one person to make a difference ?

a difference.I joined a nameless team of volunteers to help save the Earth.This team gave me an opportunity to be an everyday volunteer without joining and organzation.Befor i joined this team ,I was ignorant to the fact that the Earth needed saving.But now i know that we are facting a global crisis.It can be fatal if we overlook the situation.I don;t mean to scare you but by the time i finish my for-minute speech ,400 acres of rainforests will have been cut down.Five years ago.Larsen B,a gigantic piece of ice ,12 times the size of Hong Kong fell into the ocean and melted.Why does it matter ?It matters if we care about the disapparance of Hong Kong and Shanghai from the face of the Earth.It matters because if Antarcties meltes,according to former U.S.Vice President Al Gore ,the sea level will rise by 20feet.That is almost the herght of basketball star Yao ming ,three times over.I have given you some alarming statistics and painted a grim piture.As alarming and grim as they are ,it was precisely this information that changed my attitude.It was precisely this changed in attiude that gave me a sense of urgency to start volunteering to help save the Earth.It was precisely because i did not want to stake my children's fufure on my current actions that made me not decide to do somthing ,but to simply do it.Switch off the lights ,turn off the tap ,use less paper ,walk more ,recycle have bacome my hahits.From this experience ,i have learned that i can be a volunteer and serve the community even if i am not a member of any concrete and physical organization.I have learn that the essence of voluntarism lied not within the organization ,not even within the name of the cause ,but within oneself.I have learned that personal growth is a long process that begins with ignorance and ends with a change in one's behavior.Along the way ,I've gained the knowledge,changed my attitude and put my knowledge into practive.Each time i see someone else doing the same thing i am doing ,i am optimistic bacause i know i am one of not hundreds not thousands,but hundreds of millions of members ,i am optimistic because i know that togther we perhaps achieve the greatest goal in the history of mankind.I am optimistic bacause i know that my childhood dream of helping the globe is no longer just a fnatasy.I am optimistic because although i didn't end world hunger,my idealism has returned.Thank you!第十三届全国英语演讲比赛 第1名 赵心妍

As i stand here speaking English to you.I'm already globalized.While shopping ,I see the fair Chiness ladies carrying Prada handbags i find they are globalized.Waching Harry Potter on the Lord of the Rings with friends ,yes ,you can anticipate the refrain we are alll globalized!In this era of globalization ,we are one way or another all globalized.But realize this when people's heads turn to the fresh thing that globalization literally delivers to our doors the traditional things which we take for granted are forgotten.So consider Lao Qiang ,an ancient form of opera.It has almost vanishee from the stage and only fewer that twenty people know how to sing it.So ,how can we discover and explore our traditional culture?How we rejuvenate and share them with the whole world ?Well,there are three factors we need to keep in mind.To begin with ,the mass media plays a vital role in dicovering our traditional culture and connecting it with the wides possible audience.One evening in 2005,for example when my father and I watching the final round of the popular TV show Ster Road we both became fans for a contestant named A Bao.We were attracted by his high pitched lenor voice ,his Shansi folk tunes and Shanxi costunes.Aparently we were not his only fans.Star Road has around great popular interest in Shanxi fold music.Such media can help popular audiences to dicover lost arts and introduce people to them for the first time.The mass media raise people's interest in traditional culture ,but it is the performing artists who really develop people's understanding of traditional culture.Yang liping dance show Yunan image ,based on the primitive yannan dance style,has had an enormous influence in and out of China.Yang has recovered for us the primitive life in Yunnan.It is the raw and unadomed beaty of nature in her dancing that moves her addience most.We desperately need profossinal artists andeavor to discover traditional culture to train apprenticex and to project our culture on the global stage.The third strategic factor in promoting our culture in global compion is an audince who knows how to apprreciate our culture.But today's youth-tommorw's exptorers-are ill-equipped to appareciate our culture.Take myself as an example :i have no painting or music classes since senior high school:no extrancurricular activities like Chiness painting or callingtaphy since primary school.What paltnly little we learn about Chiness tradional culture relegated to a few lines and pictures in history books.We need our govermment and school system to give us a better opportunity to embrace our traditional culture and discover its rich legacy for ourselves.Ladies and gentlemen,the age of globalization is time for culture discovery not cultural extinction.Our traditional culture needs our concern and support to survive.With our combined efforts.We can save our valuable tradition culture from extinction and showcase it ,so it can shinge brightly on the globle stage ,shared and emjoyed by people all around the world!

eyes away from.It's a migrant worker covered with dirt.Pushing a larger cart five times his weight,the man is about my age.His eyes hollow holes, for there's nothing but the hardship of survival(in)there.Where was he from?Was he married?Was he smart?Did he go to middle school?Or perhaps even primary school?No one knows.No one seems to care.Ladies and gentlemen,as we all look out to globalization with great
expectation,there's also,crisis lying within.And the crisis was not brought onto us from anywhere out there.It was lying in our system and was made by ourseves.Some call it household pemit system,some call it regional bias.But whatever the name is , it's the same thing we see in his country:born a countryman always a countryman.And a countryman here is not just a nickname suggesting where you live, it means that you can't have a lot of the basic benefits,a public benefits like free

The title of my speech today is “The Doors that Are Open to Us ”.The other day my aunt paid me a visit.She was overjoyed.“I got the highest mark in the mid-term examination!” she said.Don't be surprised!My aunt is indeed a student;to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.Last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college.“This was the wisest decision I have ever made,” she said proudly like a teenage girl.To her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.“Compared with the late 70s,” she says, “now college students have many doors.” My aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the Cultural Revolution.She was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study Chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a TV factory.I was shocked when she first told me how she(had)had no choice in her major and job.Look at us today!So many doors are open to us!I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today.And my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities
The first door I see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us.My aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient Chinese poetry and on Shakespearean drama.As for myself, I am English major, but I may also go to lectures on history.To me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of each individual.So all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.The second door is the door to the outside world.Learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries.My aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation “frogs in a well.” But today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other.I have many fellow international classmates, and I am applying to an exchange program with a university abroad.As for my aunt, she is planning to get an MBA degree in the United Kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master's degree in biochemistry.We are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we'll put to use what we have learnt abroad.The third door is the door to lifelong learning.As new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age.Naturally, my aunt herself is the best example.Many of my aunt's contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman.She simply responds，“Age doesn't matter.What matters is your attitude.You may think it's strange that I am still going to college, but I don't think I'm too old to learn.” Yes, she is right.Since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in 2001, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms.Like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit.With her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.The doors open to us also pose challenges.For instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of preserving our fine tradition while learning from the West, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family.So, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, I believe I can meet the challenge head on.When I reach my aunt's age, I can be proud to say that I have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more.Possibly I will go back to college, too.Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.第九届全国英语演讲比赛 第二名 魏香君
Making choices
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience.Today I would like to begin with my personal experience.Before getting enrolled in college, I had been bombarded with suggestions.“Take courses of different subjects.Broaden your horizon,” my high school teacher advised.“Dive into campus activities.Have fun!” a friend said.She was well seasoned in Student Union affairs.“Work hard.Get as many ‘A’s as possible.Make your transcript look good!” my cousin offered.By the way, she was a senior busy hunting for a job.As for my mom, she simply said, “Take care.Don't be too hard on yourself.”
Composed but hopeful, I eagerly set out for an exciting life at college.Yet very soon, as I pondered these golden rules, I was overwhelmed and bewildered.Such advice all made perfect sense.Yet I couldn't figure out what should top my priority list.My first semester at college was stimulating in a somewhat anarchic way.I rushed from library to club, from classroom to tennis court, “enjoying”, as it were, the freshness of being a freshman at the expense of my sleep.Little by little, however, I became overtaxed and eventually fell victim to the “Yu Men” syndrome — “Yu Men” being stressful misery.Literally, I was overwrought from the pressures of work and life at college.I wanted to experience and excel.I wanted everything.Emotionally, I was like an insatiable kid whose hand had got stuck in the candy jar with way too many sweets.Luckily I didn't suffer for too long from my “get-everything” malaise.Recently, Mr.Tom Freston, president of the media company MTV came to my school.His talk inspired me.He proudly told us that the average age of his employees is only 28.What's the secret behind the success of his young team? “Sagacity,” he told us, “In other words, being conscious of what one is doing and what one is able to do.”
Exactly!As a freshman about to be a sophomore, I realize now that our time and stamina don't allow us to extend ourselves in all directions.So the moral responsibility of college education is to teach students the art of making important choices.No matter how hard the growing pains are, mastering this art is at the heart of every undergraduate's success, whether in school now or in life later on.So I am learning to make such choices.Joining this competition, for instance, has been one.I've wanted to fully experience this contest, to make friends, to discover what my age peers believe and to stretch myself in new and unexpected ways.I imagine this is true for most contestants here today.But to do so, we've chosen to set aside pleasures, such as watching TV series “Friends” and karaoke evenings, so we could invest more time in more reading, speaking and study.Yet this competition, by forcing us to take charge of our decisions, has surely helped us define our values, find out what we're capable of doing, and learn what best suits our individual development.I believe this knowledge of one's own caliber is the most valuable, integral and longest-lasting lesson for students in this increasingly competitive world.As for the challenges and opportunities for us, they will be determined by how adequately our education trains us to gain a clear perception of ourselves, and thereby to make sensible choices that follow.College education, as British philosopher Alfred North Whitehead said, “Should be energizing as the poet of our dreams and the architect of our purposes.” Such purpose, self-discipline and vision all hinge on the art of choice-making.As I look back on the advice received those very first days on campus, I no longer feel perplexed, because I now have my own guideline: Make choices that lead to a clearer vision of who I am, what I can do, and how I may best tap my potential.The horizon is now wide but distinct, and the taste already feels sweet.Thank you very much!第九届全国英语演讲比赛 第三名 钟雨柔
Prepared Speech Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.At present, my fellow students and I have before us great personal and educational opportunities.At the same time, we are running into a variety of challenges.Today's college education provides us with opportunities for bringing out the creativity and talent that we have within us.This is nurtured both by our learned professors, and by the growing dimension of knowledge sources, such as the World Wide Web and multimedia sources.Our educational experience is being transformed both within and beyond the traditional classroom.However, challenges still exist.At the end of every semester, students in my university are required to fill out a questionnaire as a review of the previous semester.The questions usually cover a broad range of college life, from curriculum adjustment to canteen service.And almost every time, the questionnaire includes one essential question, that is: As a college student, what are your major challenges? And almost every answer includes two aspects: studying and professional.These two challenges will remain our preoccupations as long as we live in such a competitive world.A series of challenges in our studies start from almost the beginning of our freshman year.We may wonder whether we've chosen the right major.We may wonder if the extracurricular activities add credits to our studies.We may work our heads off to get a glorious A, because B is already mediocre and C is almost unacceptable.Later on we may be competing with our hardworking, intelligent peers, including our best friends to get into an ideal graduate school.All of these sound so familiar and they have somehow made our college education so goal-obsessed that we sometimes fail to fully enjoy our educational experience.Apart from challenges in learning, there are also professional challenges.The competitive world today has also brought about the “Knowledge Economy,” which requires the effective use of knowledge for economic and social development, and also requires skilled and multi-oriented students with a marketable vocational sense.Therefore, sophisticated calculations upon the value of a university degree are being made.Graduate employability statistics are being scrutinized.Programs like resume writing and interview skills are seen as a must.Again as I've said above, when professional concern dominates our college education, we may lose the essence of our educational experience.Indeed, facing these two challenges, how can students manage to be what the employers seek and at the same time to enjoy a valuable, insightful and rewarding educational experience?
For me, the solution to the problem lies in what can be called an “Educational Synthesis”.I remember attending a lecture by Professor Tu Weiming, director of Harvard Yenching Institute.In his lecture, Professor Tu argued that the ideal state of college education is to arrive at a synthesis, a combination of specific knowledge, humanistic insight and sense of social responsibility.Admittedly, there is much to do to bridge the gap between our educational experience in college and the social employment in society.“Educational synthesis” can help us narrow the gap.Fortunately, today's college education provides us with such a diverse world.From this diverse world we may choose what we want to form our own educational synthesis.Ladies and gentlemen, as Charles Dickens once commented upon the time of the French Revolution, “It was the best of times;it was the worst of times.” And I'm afraid so it is with our time.I believe, once we achieve our own educational synthesis, we will be able to transform our challenges into opportunities.We will be able to see the best time of our life.And more importantly, we will be able to see the best time of our nation.Thank you.第八届全国英语演讲比赛 第一名 顾秋蓓 上海外国语大学

This morning, I would like to argue for true ecological tourism, or, ecotourism.To me, a true ecotour is a tour that allows us to express our passion for nature and for our culture heritage(遗产).I love traveling.One of my most memorable trips was climbing the Great Wall.There, I cherished seeing people of all races and ages gathered on this ancient edifice.I cherished seeing these people smiling at each other, making way for each other, and reminding each other to watch their steps.While I love traveling, I'm also sad to see the damage tourism has done to nature and to our historical relics.Many tour agencies like to label their business “ecotours”.But they have cut down trees and filled up rivers in order to build roads,hotels and cable cars so as to attract tourists.And on their tours, some people pick flowers, catch birds and throw away food that might poison animals.This is not ecotourism at all.True ecotourism involves responsibility.While we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should also help protect it.Here let me share an experience.Once I joined others as young volunteers in an outing.The excursion(短途旅行）took us to a peak(山峰)of a mountain where we got a beautiful view of the city.We were, however, not ordinary tourists.As we were climbing, we were also picking up the trash left on the ground by other climbers.Finally, we carried, in large bags, all the trash on the mountain.The excursion was exhausting, but I believe, after this experience, not a single one of us will ever litter any tourist spot.Moreover, when we were cleaning up the mountain slope, we caught eyes of many others.Some of us might see us as foolish, but, more of them, I believe, will take note of the need to protect the environment.My experience was one of an ecotourist.We took, but we also gave.However, on the idea of ecotourism, There many misunderstandings.I one telephoned several travel agencies to inquire about ecotour.And here is how it went: “Hello!” “Hi!I'm interested in the ecotour you've advertised.” “Oh, year, ecotour.” “I'm wondering if we should do anything special as ecotourists.” “I'm sorry? Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, good morning.First of all, let me take this chance to present to you a set of data that I hope won't bore you since the source is China Daily.China's tourism revenue last year reached 500 billion RMB, an increase of 10.5 percent from the year before, and comprised more than 5% of China's GDP.According to experts, this number will grow to 8% in the coming ten years and more than 40 million jobs will be created.As a student majoring in economics, I can't be more sensitive to the essential meanings behind these numbers.They mean progress, prosperity, employment and stability.However, as a conscientious Chinese and citizen of the world, I can't help but care more about the losses incurred in this transaction, by which I mean the disturbing images of environmental destruction, which leads to ecological crisis.The global environment has changed for the worse during the past few years, and tourism is partly to blame.Take China for example, in order to attract tourists, many unknown places are built into resorts.Forests are cleared, prairies trampled, rivers and lakes 6)contaminated, wild animals are driven away, plants jeopardized and secluded populations disturbed.If this seems too remote and abstract, my own traveling experience may speak louder here.Last year I took a tour around Emei Mountain in Sichuan Province.Like most tourists, I was eager to embrace nature and enjoy its beauty.However, as soon as I got on the bus, the stench of gasoline and the noise of the engine tainted my appreciation of the wonderful scenery and the tranquility of the country road.When we finally arrived, what I saw was not a beautiful landscape but crowds of people;what I heard was not the melodious singing of birds, but yelling and bargaining from the gift shops;what I smelled was not the fresh mountain air, but stinking suffocating smoke coming out of small dirty restaurants.Moreover, I could not understand why the lovely monkeys living there had to take photos with tourists all day;why the beautiful butterflies and flowers had become lifeless samples in shop windows;why the strongest impressions I had was trash scattered everywhere on the ground.However, this is not the end of the story.Before I left Emei, I met a group of kids in an ecotourism program with the slogan: “Experiencing, Learning and Protecting.” When I saw their young hands picking up trash from the ground, when I felt their enjoyment and harmonious relationship with the animals, when I found their purest eyes filled with passion and love for nature, I realized to my great satisfaction that there doesn't have to be a tradeoff between tourism and ecology, because deep within us is an inclination toward natural beauty and a desire to protect it.Yes, environmental problems will eventually ease with the advancement of science and technology and improvement of our management system.However, an increase of ecological education and hands-on environmental involvement of our fellow citizens will do even better.To realize this, the best way for us lies in tourism itself because nothing other than nature can teach us how to love and cherish our sweetest home.At the end of my speech, please let me quote Bob Dylan:
