Address on Graduation Farewell

Good evening ladies and gentleman, your honor the teachers，Hello everyone!Actually, I do not want to make such appellation as my opening speech.Because you know that I always want myself be different from others.But this time I do, the reason is simple: after tonight, each of us will step onto the road to our dream.If I call that boys and girls, it seems we are still a little childish, and if that, how can we burden the bag of dream which god oblige us.I am sorry I have made something nervous atmosphere to you.In fact, life is easy;just do what you want and what you should.Now, I believe each of us has a way in our inner heart;the way is to where we dream to.Some of us may say “I want to set a company” or “I want to find a high salary job” Well, it is really ambitious, just hold it and take steps to make it come true.Also, some girls may murmur “I want to marry a rich man”.Ok, do not be shy, everyone here back you and hope sincerely the dream will come true.It is really amazing when thinking about our future, however, now you look not to be so exciting.I have heard about there were many girls weeping on such farewell.Well, separation is always full of anguish;it is the common sense of human.But now I am happy.I am happy that in four years, when we handed in hand to play games in outdoor activities;when we seated together to guess what the final exam text would be and cheating together in examinations;when we complain, laugh or almost even hate each other, then all misunderstandings clarified off few days later.How happy we were!

I am happy that in four years, whenever we met, we shake hands and say hi to each other, bosom like brothers or sisters;whenever we seek for help mutually when confront difficulties while respond no rejections;whenever in summer or winter holidays, we sent greeted phone message to each other.Thanks to those messages, like sunlight in cold winter it warmed every heart of us, for at least it shows we are not lonely.How happy we were!

I am happy that in four years, we have too many words to pour out now.Maybe some of us are too shy to ask somebody out all the time;maybe some of us are now chewing about there is no time left, will the misunderstandings be vanished with opportunity.There is no need to worry about it, for that I believe now just a knowing smile or an appreciation eye has already made him or her understand.Or maybe some of us are wondering: “Will the happiness we have last forever”? Yes, I am sure.But before that, I should thank you.Thank you your honor the teachers.It is you who forge us to be mature and inculcate us knowledge while never care anything about fatigue.With the knowledge boat you launched for us, none of us failed to the other bank of river.Although it is not short of rains and storms, different member reaped different acquisitions, we finally landed successfully.I wish you harmonious family and healthy body!

Thank you my classmates.I can still and will definitely last forever remember that I have ever been assisted by every one of you.Especially the girls thank you for having classes for me.All the auspices I will carve them into my heart.I wish you plain future and happy life!

Thank you my roommates.I know I have made many troubles to you, disturbed you and done something make you unhappy.And I know that you had never resented me.Thank you for the tolerance.I wish you happy everyday and business successful!

The happy time past will be forever remembered, the new happy life is doomed around the corner.But now, let’s regardless of anything but indulge in entertaining!

大家晚上好，实际上我并不想用这样的称呼作为开场白，因为你们都知道我是总希望自己是与众不同的。但是这一次我不得不这样用，原因很简单：今晚以后我们每一个人都会踏上通 往梦想之路。如果我称呼男孩们女孩们就显得我们仍旧有点孩子气，要是那样的话，我们怎么 能担的起上帝恩赐与我们的梦想之包呢？

对不起我制造一些紧张气氛，事实上，生活很简单，就是做你想做的事和该做的事。此时此刻，相信我们每一个人的内心都有一条路，一条通往梦想之地的路。有些人可能会说“我想 开一家公司”或者“我想找一份薪水不错的工作”，的确有志向，抱定这一理想然后采取措施 去实现它。可能有女生在嘀咕说“我想嫁个有钱人”，很好，不必不好意思，这里的每一个人 都支持你并衷心祝愿你的愿望能够实现。

当幻想我们的未来时它的确很精彩。但是你们现在看起来似乎并不那么兴奋。我曾听说在这样的告别会上有很多女生哭了，的确，分离总是充满了痛苦，这是人之常情。但是现在，我 很开心。

我很开心，因为四年来当我们手牵手在户外做游戏时；当我们坐在一起猜测期末试题，考试一起作弊时；当我们互相抱怨，嘲笑，甚至是互相怨恨而几天后这些误解都被澄清时，那时 我们是多么开心啊。

我很开心，因为四年来无论什么时候我们相遇，我们都互相挥手致意，亲密如同兄弟姐妹；无论什么时候我们相互寻求帮助都不会被拒绝；无论是在暑假还是寒假，我们都互发祝福短信，这些短信仿佛寒冬里的阳光温暖了我们每一个人的心房，因为他至少表明：我们并不孤单。那 时我们是多么开心啊。

我很开心，因为四年来我们有太多的话语想要在此刻倾泻出来。或许我们有些人太过腼腆而始终不敢约某人出去，或许我们有些人此刻在思忖：“时间所剩不多，我们还有机会消除彼 此间的误解吗？”，不必担心，我相信此时此刻只需一个会意的微笑，一个感激的眼神就会让 他（她）明白。也或者有人会问：“我们拥有的这幸福会一直持续吗？”会的，我相信会的。

但是在这之前，我要感谢你们。

感谢你们，尊敬的老师们。是你们段造我们成熟，交给我们知识却从不知疲倦。你们为我们打造的知识方舟将我们成功渡到河之彼岸，尽管这一过程中不乏风风雨雨，不同人的收获也 不尽相同，但我们最终还是成功地到达了彼岸。我谨以家庭合美，身体健康祝福你们。

感谢你们，我的同学们。我还能记得并将永远记得你们每一个人都曾帮助过我，尤其是女生们，由衷的感谢你们帮我上课。所有的这些帮助我都将铭刻于心。我谨以一帆风顺和生活幸 福祝福你们。

THE PRESIDENT: Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your President.The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence — a time set apart.Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey that we have traveled together, and the future of our nation.Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy.In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a

Americans in offering best wishes to President-Elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.Tonight I am filled with gratitude — to Vice President Cheney and members of my administration;to Laura, who brought joy to this house and love to my life;to our wonderful daughters, Barbara and Jenna;to my parents, whose examples have provided strength for a lifetime.And above all, I thank the American people for the trust you have given me.I thank you for the prayers that have lifted my spirits.And I thank you for the countless acts of courage, generosity, and grace that I have witnessed these past eight years.This evening, my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house — September the 11th, 2001.That morning, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor.I remember standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center three days later, surrounded by rescuers who had been working around the clock.I remember talking to brave souls who charged through smoke-filled corridors at the Pentagon, and to husbands and wives whose loved ones became heroes aboard Flight 93.I remember Arlene Howard, who gave me her fallen son’s police shield as a reminder of all that was lost.And I still carry his badge.As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11.But I never did.Every morning, I received a briefing on

the threats to our nation.I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.Over the past seven years, a new Department of Homeland Security has

been created.The military, the intelligence community, and the FBI have been transformed.Our nation is equipped with new tools to monitor the terrorists’ movements, freeze their finances, and break up their plots.And with strong allies at our side, we have taken the fight to the terrorists and those who support them.Afghanistan has gone from a nation where the Taliban

harbored al Qaeda and stoned women in the streets to a young democracy that is fighting terror and encouraging girls to go to school.Iraq has gone from a brutal dictatorship and a sworn enemy of America to an Arab democracy at the heart of the Middle East and a friend of the United States.There is legitimate debate about many of these decisions.But there can be little debate about the results.America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil.This is a tribute to those who toil night and day to keep us safe — law enforcement officers, intelligence analysts, homeland security and diplomatic personnel, and the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.Our nation is blessed to have citizens who volunteer to defend us in this time of danger.I have cherished meeting these selfless patriots and their families.And America owes you a debt of gratitude.And to all our men and women in uniform listening tonight: There has been no higher honor than serving as your Commander-in-Chief.The battles waged by our troops are part of a broader struggle between two dramatically different systems.Under one, a small band of fanatics demands total obedience to an oppressive ideology, condemns women to subservience, and marks unbelievers for murder.The other system is based on the

conviction that freedom is the universal gift of Almighty God, and that liberty and justice light the path to peace.This is the belief that gave birth to our nation.And in the long run, advancing this belief is the only practical way to protect our citizens.When people live in freedom, they do not willingly choose leaders who pursue campaigns of terror.When people have hope in the future, they will not cede their lives to violence and extremism.So around the world, America is promoting human liberty, human rights, and human dignity.We’re standing with dissidents and young democracies, providing AIDS medicine to dying patients — to bring dying patients back to life, and sparing mothers and babies from malaria.And this great republic born alone in liberty is leading the world toward a new age when freedom belongs to all nations.For eight years, we’ve also strived to expand opportunity and hope here at home.Across our country, students are rising to meet higher standards in public schools.A new Medicare prescription drug benefit is bringing peace of mind to seniors and the disabled.Every taxpayer pays lower income taxes.The addicted and suffering are finding new hope through faith-based

programs.Vulnerable human life is better protected.Funding for our veterans has nearly doubled.America’s air and water and lands are measurably

cleaner.And the federal bench includes wise new members like Justice Sam Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts.When challenges to our prosperity emerged, we rose to meet them.Facing the prospect of a financial collapse, we took decisive measures to safeguard our economy.These are very tough times for hardworking families, but the toll would be far worse if we had not acted.All Americans are in this together.And together, with determination and hard work, we will restore our economy to the path of growth.We will show the world once again the resilience of America’s free enterprise system.Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks.There are things I would do differently if given the chance.Yet I’ve always acted with the best interests of our country in mind.I have followed my

conscience and done what I thought was right.You may not agree with some

of the tough decisions I have made.But I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions.The decades ahead will bring more hard choices for our country, and there are some guiding principles that should shape our course.While our nation is safer than it was seven years ago, the gravest threat to our people remains another terrorist attack.Our enemies are patient, and determined to strike again.America did nothing to seek or deserve this

compromise.Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere.Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right.This nation must continue to speak out for justice and truth.We must always be willing to act in their defense — and to advance the cause of peace.President Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” As I leave the house he occupied two centuries ago, I share that optimism.America is a young country, full of vitality,constantly growing and renewing itself.And even in the toughest times, we lift our eyes to the broad horizon ahead.I have confidence in the promise of America because I know the character of our people.This is a nation that inspires immigrants to risk everything for the dream of freedom.This is a nation where citizens show calm in times of danger, and compassion in the face of suffering.We see examples of

America’s character all around us.And Laura and I have invited some of them to join us in the White House this evening.We see America’s character in Dr.Tony Recasner, a principal who opened a new charter school from the ruins of Hurricane Katrina.We see it in Julio Medina, a former inmate who leads a faith-based program to help prisoners returning to society.We’ve seen it in Staff Sergeant Aubrey McDade, who charged into an ambush in Iraq and rescued three of his fellow Marines.We see America’s character in Bill Krissoff — a surgeon from California.His son, Nathan — a Marine — gave his life in Iraq.When I met Dr.Krissoff and his family, he delivered some surprising news: He told me he wanted to join the Navy Medical Corps in honor of his son.This good man was 60 years old — 18 years above the age limit.But his petition for a waiver was granted, and for the past year he has trained in battlefield medicine.Lieutenant

Commander Krissoff could not be here tonight, because he will soon deploy to Iraq, where he will help save America’s wounded warriors — and uphold the legacy of his fallen son.In citizens like these, we see the best of our countrycitizen of the United States of America.And so, my fellow Americans, for the final time: Good night.May God bless this house and our next President.And may God bless you and our wonderful country.Thank you.(Applause.)

Hello I didn’t get to say goodbye to you all.They didn’t tell me when I would finish till the day before I finished.I thought we would have one more class together to say good bye.Maybe it’s a good thing.I don’t like to say goodbye.I got to say goodbye to only 2 classes andI ending up crying because it was so sad to do.So, saying goodbye to every class would have been difficult for me.So maybe it was good not to saygood bye in person.I don’t like goodbyes.Anyway, it is not goodbye because we can be qq friends forever and I made so many friends here at this university.It is goodbye as your teacher though, because I amno longer your teacher.It is sad to say goodbye to Jianxi Science and Technology University.I told you it was the best university in China.I think its true.I had the best time here and met manywonderful people..I hope your exams went well and your future exams too.It was a pleasure to meet and teach you all.It was

my first experience like this to teachand you were all wonderful students and people to meet and teach.I have learnt that even if I amthe teacher, you were all my teachers too.Thank you for being great students and it was great to meet you all.I really wish you the best in your futures.I will be in Nanchang one more year and teaching freshman / first year students again but at Jianxi / Nanchang Teachers university in the city of Nanchang.I would love to stay at Jianxi Science and Technology University but I am a musician and I need to live in the city centre so I can play music more.This was too far away for me to live.I am going to go to Beijing for music but have to wait a year now and I prefer to be here in Nanchang again.I will sometimes come for a visit to our school and I hope I bump into some of you and have lunch with some of you sometimes.That will be great.I am sending this letter to all my students on qq.I will miss you all.You can stay in touch with me.I will always be on qq.I hope you learnt something from me and that your English improved a bit more.I saw how much better and confident yo

别让“菜英文”太张狂

曾看到一则新闻，标题是：“台中市的‘菜英文’出了大洋相”。我知道，台湾有个“蔡英文”，台北人，民进党党主席，因为不愿放弃“台独”主张，声誉不佳。但此人姓“蔡”而非“菜”，难道在台中市还有个“菜英文”？“菜英文”因何出了大洋相？阅读新闻后才知道：台中市环保部门印制的英文公函错误连篇，如Envelope（信封）词尾少一个e，Taichung City（台中市）的y变成了V，等等，遭致一片骂声。有人说：台中市的“菜英文”尽出洋相，给台湾丢了脸。原来新闻标题用了谐音修辞，“菜英文”即水平很差的英文。“菜”为网络用语，是“差”“笨”“愚蠢”的意思。

其实，大陆也有“菜英文”，也在各地出洋相。北京首都机场曾有一个专卖店，英文牌子是“Ants and Crafts”。据说，某国外游客来中国，看到该店店名十分感慨，中国真了不起，还有专卖蚂蚁的地方。结果走进去一看，没发现任何蚂蚁，全是手工艺品。原来，店名将“Art”(工艺品)误成了“Ant”(蚂蚁)。这种差错各地都大量存在。据报载，来华访问的马来西亚华人邓先生，曾慕名前往西安秦始皇兵马俑博物馆参观，在博物馆停车场附近随便转转，就发现多家商铺牌匾英文有错，如restaurant(餐馆)误成了rsetaurant，agency(机构)误成了anency，jade(玉器)误成了gade，commercial(商业)误成了coammercial，等等。弄得邓先生直发呆。

这些都是低级的拼写错误，避免很简单，只要端正态度，仔细翻翻英语词典即可。最应引起注意的，是被称为Chinglish（中式英语）的错误，即由于没有准确理解英文单词含义、用法不符合英文表达习惯或不符合英语国家文化习俗而出现的问题。

汉语中有许多同音异义词，在把这些词翻译成英文时，一定要细加辨析，弄清每个含义所对应的英文，否则会出现张冠李戴的问题。我曾在超市买到一袋“小核桂圆”，包装袋上的英文介绍将“核”翻译成了“nucleus”。看到这个单词，相信外国人也会暗暗发笑。nucleus虽然可译成中文的“核”，但它指的是原子核，在说到核电站、核爆炸时常用到。桂圆等水果中的核，对应的英文单词是pit或stone。就出现频率而言，Export可能位居这类错误的首位。Export即“出口”，但它指的是“外贸出口”。许多机场、车站、地铁、超市等公共场所，把供人行走的“出口”译成了Export。据说，这些个“Export”已成为“国际玩笑”，常被人用来嘲笑中国的“菜英文”。其实，公共场所供人行走的“出口”，对应的单词Exit。

英文中有一些独特的表达习惯，不能用相关的中文意思生硬地对译，否则也会闹笑话。一位英国朋友来到北京某公共场所，一时内急，向一个标有restroom 的房间走了进去，结果一个女服务员走上前来和他热情地搭话，英国朋友十分地尴尬。不过，马上就明白了，这是休息室而非厕所。翻译者可能认为“rest”即休息，“room”即房间，便望文生义地把restroom误解成休息室了。殊不知在英语中restroom指的是厕所，休息室一般作Lounge。北京一家收费厕所，门口的标示牌为fee-paying public toilet。在英文中，fee-paying即付费，public即公共，toilet即厕所，有关人员便根据中文意思“硬拼”出个fee-paying public toilet来，以为它表示的意思是“收费的公共厕所”。其实，外国人看到这句话会理解成“上完厕所可以给钱”，意思是在这里上厕所非但不收费，反而会给钱。在国外，大部分国家的厕所都是收费的，一般情况下，标明toilet即可，大家都知是收费的。

许多英文单词，除了词汇意义之外，还有英语国家所赋予它的民族文化含义。如果不了解这些单词背后的文化含义，而按中文意思对译，也会闹笑话。白象牌电池是中国著名品牌，据说它刚刚进入英语国家时就曾遭到嘲笑。因为此电池英文名称中的White Elephant（白象）一词，在英文中有“大而无用并且会吃垮你的东西”的含义。类似的问题，在各地的公共场所也经常见到。我曾在上海一公交车站站点见到一块英文告示牌，上面写着Old People First,稍懂英文的人都明白，它的意思是“老人优先”。如果真有外国年长者来乘车，看到这块牌子一定会心里不爽。中国有“尊老”的传统，“老”含有敬意，年长者一般是不介意被称为“老人”（Old People）的。但英语国家则不同，他们渴望年轻，害怕“老”，如果被称为“老人”是会产生抵触情绪的。中文中的“老人优先”，英语一般说成Senior Citizens First(年长者优先)。再如，我们经常在大型公共场所的扶手电梯旁，看到“小心碰头”的警示牌，许多地方把它翻译成“Watch out，Knock Head”（当心，碰头）。外国人看到Knock Head也会发笑，因为这是一句英文俚语，意思是“笨蛋”。“小心碰头”就成了“小心，笨蛋”。英文是给外国人看的，是为了给外国朋友提供生活、工作上的便利，如果我们让蹩脚的“菜英文”去接待外国人，效果可想而知。建议有关人员，多请教专家如何？建议有关部门，加大监管力度如何？
