Have you ever bought any food on the train? And do you ask for the receipt after buying it? Nowadays, all trains in China provide its passengers with receipts for commodities, but 7 years ago, things were quite different.On 13th of October, 2004, the train T109 from Beijing to Shanghai was speeding on the railway.A graduate student bought a sausage at 1 yuan on the train, then asked for a receipt.“Are you kidding? It‟s just one yuan!” The crew member was surprised.The student, however, answered in a determined voice, “I paid the money, so I deserve the receipt.”

“But we never give receipts on the train.‟ As a result, his further request was turned down by a cold shoulder.Several days later, the student sued the National Railway Ministry, for not providing receipts for passengers.To his dismay, the court turned down the case for lack of evidence.But he, who majored in law at that time, believed law as a most powerful weapon, so he did not give up.Instead, he began his journey of collecting first-hand evidence by taking trains and buying commodities aboard.When his classmates were playing soccer, he was taking the train;When his classmates were buying food at Mcdonald‟s, he was buying food on the train;When his classmates were asking girls out, he was asking for the receipts.As he joked, „I was either taking the train or on the way to take the train.‟

One month later, he appeared in the court again, with newly-collected evidence and a stronger confidence.And I guess, ladies and gentlemen, you will all cheer for the result because this time, the student won the case.Very soon, a regulation about receipts on the train came out.And whatever we buy on the train now, there‟s a receipt for us.Outside the court, the student was asked, “How do you make it to the end?” He said, “As a law student, I root my faith in law.I believe that law is there, to protect every person with no exception, and to ensure every person has a say.” His words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrine of a law student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold.It is this faith that initiates the student to resort to law for a tiny issue;it is this faith that supports him to endure all the exhausting trips when collecting evidence;It is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal and rightful.It is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicial system and bring social justice.To many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are to be respected and law is to be believed in.It all starts with a tiny receipt of 1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest in social justice.The bridge that leads a tiny start to a bumper harvest is faith, the faith in law, rightful and strong.张小洁：广东外语外贸大学，第16届21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛亚军。

A couple of weeks ago, when I learned the theme of today‟s competition, I asked some of my roommates: “What does „faith‟ mean to you?” Just coming back from a philosophy class, the girls were in a poetic mood: “Faith is what John Lennon had when he wrote the legendary song „Imagine‟ and dreamed of „world peace‟”, “Faith is what the Hebrews had when they followed Moses through the Red Sea in search of their freedom.” “And faith is what the pilgrims had when they journeyed to that strange land on Mayflower, and started their pursuit of a new life.”

Thanks for the history lesson girls, but I was not asking for a great, historic event where faith might have altered the entire course of humanity.All I asked was “what does faith mean to you, to us, the individuals toiling with life‟s hard choices each day?” Personally speaking, faith is like oxygen: I didn‟t know how precious it was until I ran the risk of losing it.My heart stirs still every time memory brings me back to three years ago, when the devastating earthquake engulfed our country.As one of the few cities that took the hit the hardest that day, my hometown was suddenly devoured by a black hole of depression.Having forsaken our worldly possessions, my family joined the army of tents every night, holding our breath and waiting for daybreak;having abandoned the comfort of home, we managed to lift ourselves up, along with neighbors and friends, when each after-shock threatened to tear us down.As a politician once put it, in the face of disaster, we‟re reminded that life can be unimaginably cruel, but it‟s also in these moments, that we rediscover our common faith in life.Indeed, during those dark hours, faith blazed in the courage of my math teacher Ms.Liu, when she stayed behind in a shaking building until she made sure that the last student had safely evacuated;faith radiated from the persistence of my dad when he kept his eyes wide open every single night, so that my mom and I could have a good night‟s sleep;faith was ignited from the empathy of my next-door neighbor, when she took a stranger that was in shock into her arms and consoled him with her warm embrace.In the end, faith was rekindled in the passion of me and my fellow classmates, who immediately got back to preparing for our College Entrance Examination the very next day, with gritted teeth, and a conviction as steady as a rock.Ladies and gentlemen, this is what faith means to me.It‟s the small voice in our ears that says: be strong, be good, and don‟t give up whenever we‟re frustrated by life.That's why after three years, my friends and family have picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and with tougher spirits, begun again their journey towards a better future.At last, to twist the lyrics of last year‟s charity song, I call upon my fellow young friends to chant together with me, in the name of faith, for all those who are still suffering in Haiti, Japan and Myanmar: when I get older, I will be stronger, they‟ll call me faith, just like a waving flag.Let us carry above our heads the waving flag called Faith, and let its many inspirations lift us up from where we belong.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

Today I would like to begin with a story.There was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a census about mountain gorillas.These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world;this put them severely under threat of poaching and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures.She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Diana Fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems.On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth.It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity.But on the other hand, many problems can occurbig notes, small notes or even coins-from housewives, plumbers, ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids.Some of them cannot afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood.Why? Because they care.Because they still want their Mother Nature back.Because they know it still belongs to them.This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it , it's all coming from a scene to be remembered, a scene to recall and to cherish.The other night, as I saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer.And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's time for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Diana Fossey because it is with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our minds, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.Thank you very much.王媛：南京大学选手，第八届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛亚军。演讲稿：My Tour Agency

This morning, I would like to argue for true ecological tourism, or, ecotourism.To me, a true ecotour is a tour that allows us to express our passion for nature and for our cultural heritage.I love traveling.One of my most memorable trips was climbing the Great Wall.There, I cherished seeing people of all races and ages gathered on this ancient edifice.I cherished seeing these people smiling at each other, making way for each other, and reminding each other to watch their steps.While I love traveling, I'm also sad to see the damage tourism has done to nature and to our historical relics.Many tour agencies like to label their business “ecotours”.But they have cut down trees and filled up rivers in order to build roads, hotels and cable cars so as to attract tourists.And on their tours, some people pick flowers, catch birds and throw away food that might poison animals.This is not ecotourism at all.True ecotourism involves responsibility.While we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should also help protect it.Here let me share an experience.Once, I joined others as young volunteers in an outing.The excursion took us to the peak of a mountain where we got a beautiful view of the city.We were, however, not ordinary tourists.As we were climbing, we were also picking up the trash left on the ground by other climbers.Finally, we carried, in large bags, all the trash down the mountain.The excursion was exhausting, but I believe, after this experience, not a single one of us will ever litter any tourist spot.Moreover, when we were cleaning up the mountain slope, we caught eyes of many others.Some of them might see us as foolish, but more of them, I believe, will take note of the need to protect the environment.My experience was one of an ecotourist.We took, but we also gave.However, on the idea of ecotourism, there are many misunderstandings.I once telephoned several travel agencies to inquire about ecotours.And here is how it went:

“Hello!”

“Hi, I'm interested in the ecotour you've advertised.”

“Oh, yeah, ecotour.”

“I'm wondering if we should do anything special as ecotourists.”

“I'm sorry? Oh, nothing… Just enjoy the scenery.”

Every conversation ended up with “enjoying the scenery.” No one mentioned “protecting the wildlife,” “respecting local customs,” or “preparing a bag for garbage.” None of them made any mention of the obligation and responsibility on the part of tourists.Like other students, I have had many dreams of what I would like to do after graduation.One of these dreams is to run a travel agency.In this travel agency, I would do three things:

First, I would like to have a staff of people who love nature as they love their mothers and can pass on to the customers the same kind of love.Second, I would like to let the customers appreciate the beauty of nature in those natural reservations, safari parks and wild forests, and show them how they can contribute in return for the air, water and nourishment that nature provides.Last but not least, I'd encourage the customers to work as volunteers as I once did.They would live close to nature by cleaning up the natural resorts and planting trees as mementos of their visit.I still remember when I was standing on the top of the Great Wall, I could see in some distance many bare mountains with no trees, nothing green.It is my dream that one day I would organize tours for areas that are suffering from erosion and deforestation, and we would plant trees there.Ecotourism should be an experience of learning and offering-it should not be just seeing the famous sites and posing for photos.On the flag of my agency, I would like to print this motto:

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, good morning.First of all, let me take this chance to present to you a set of data that I hope won't bore you since the source is China Daily.China's tourism revenue last year reached 500 billion RMB, an increase of 10.5 percent from the year before, and comprised more than 5% of China's GDP.According to experts, this number will grow to 8% in the coming ten years and more than 40 million jobs will be created.As a student majoring in economics, I can't be more sensitive to the essential meanings behind these numbers.They mean progress, prosperity, employment and stability.However, as a conscientious Chinese and citizen of the world, I can't help but care more about the losses incurred in this transaction, by which I mean the disturbing images of environmental destruction, which leads to ecological crisis.The global environment has changed for the worse during the past few years, and tourism is partly to blame.Take China for example, in order to attract tourists, many unknown places are built into resorts.Forests are cleared, prairies trampled, rivers and lakes 6)contaminated, wild animals are driven away, plants jeopardized and secluded populations disturbed.If this seems too remote and abstract, my own traveling experience may speak louder here.Last year I took a tour around Emei Mountain in Sichuan Province.Like most tourists, I was eager to embrace nature and enjoy its beauty.However, as soon as I got on the bus, the stench of gasoline and the noise of the engine tainted my appreciation of the wonderful scenery and the tranquility of the country road.When we finally arrived, what I saw was not a beautiful landscape but crowds of people;what I heard was not the melodious singing of birds, but yelling and bargaining from the gift shops;what I smelled was not the fresh mountain air, but stinking suffocating smoke coming out of small dirty restaurants.Moreover, I could not understand why the lovely monkeys living there had to take photos with tourists all day;why the beautiful butterflies and flowers had become lifeless samples in shop windows;why the strongest impressions I had was trash scattered everywhere on the ground.However, this is not the end of the story.Before I left Emei, I met a group of kids in an ecotourism program with the slogan: “Experiencing, Learning and Protecting.” When I saw their young hands picking up trash from the ground, when I felt their enjoyment and harmonious relationship with the animals, when I found their purest eyes filled with passion and love for nature, I realized to my great satisfaction that there doesn't have to be a tradeoff between tourism and ecology, because deep within us is an inclination toward natural beauty and a desire to protect it.Yes, environmental problems will eventually ease with the advancement of science and technology and improvement of our management system.However, an increase of ecological education and hands-on environmental involvement of our fellow citizens will do even better.To realize this, the best way for us lies in tourism itself because nothing other than nature can teach us how to love and cherish our sweetest home.At the end of my speech, please let me quote Bob Dylan:

How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?

How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?

How many years can a mountain exist before it's washed to the sea?

Giving is Receiving—Personal Growth in Volunteer Work Morning，ladies and gentlemen.Last summer, I volunteered to work as an English teacher in a primary school for children of migrant workers.To be accurate, I didn’t volunteer.I was dragged in.literally.When my friends first hit upon the idea of this project, I was all against it: “What? To spend my vacation standing in the heat, yelling at a bunch of nine-year-olds who couldn’t even speak proper Mandarin Chinese? And besides, there’s no pay for my toil.No, I’m definitely not going.” My friends twisted my arms to have me join them.Unexpectedly, the first lesson I taught turned out a lesson for me.The moment I stepped into the shabby classroom, I was touched by the loud, respectful voices in unison: “Good morning, teacher!” Instead of fooling around, the children were thirsty for knowledge and efficient in absorbing everything I was able to give them.This made me despise myself for I hadn’t even prepared for the class.During the break, I leaned over the squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row: “Without air-conditioning, it’s really hot here.Are you tired?” “Not at all,” said he, shaking his head.“It’s fine here.My Dad builds asphalt roads.That is really tiring and hot.”

As summer advanced, my enthusiasm as a teacher grew.I prepared my lesson carefully and even used some methods my teachers used.I organized many group activities to give the kids fun.Strangely enough, the heat was also becoming less and less unbearable.Soon, my one-month volunteer work came to an end.When I was leaving my last class, I turned back and saw smiling faces and waving hands.Never before had I ever had such a feeling of sadness, which was nevertheless mixed with a sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happiness.I was paid for my work, amply paid, not in terms of money, but something more valuable.My English was improved.I was able to teach it, although not very professional.I learned about the grassroots-level society.Inside myself a heart is growing, a heart that not only beats for myself, but cares for others as well.The volunteer work gave me a precious little chance to say thanks to people like the little boy’s father, who construct highways and undergrounds, build up modern skyscrapers, and make our cities more and more beautiful.To help the children with their English was all I could do at present to show my gratitude to these unsung heroes.The world may not have been fair to them, so privileged and blessed people like me are obliged to do whatever we can to help make their life better.Whatever I do for them, however, I know it cannot be compared with what they have done to improve the quality of life in our cities.Ladies and gentlemen, now I realize that volunteering shouldn’t be just a one-time personal experience.It should be a lifetime activity of everybody.Many of us are now offering our assistance to the needy and to each other.Our efforts have indeed made a difference.Whether we are helping children with their schooling, or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helping out with 2008 Beijing Olympics, we will not only contribute to the harmony of the world but also elevate ourselves.Emerson once said, “It’s one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” He was right.I hear that my university is going to organize another voluntary teaching program this summer.This time I won’t be dragged in.I will volunteer.第12届21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛亚军钟石演讲视频及演讲稿

Ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

I’m from Sichuan Province, which is also the place pandas come from.Last summer, I volunteered to be a tour guide for a group of kids from a rural elementary school, who had been invited by the 1)Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center to see the pandas.Halfway through our trip, a little boy told me he thought the pandas?home looked a bit dirty and asked whether he could clean their 2)enclosures.I was surprised that this boy, who was so desperately in need of help himself, was thinking of helping the giant pandas!I had volunteered to offer him my time and knowledge, and he had volunteered to provide the pandas with a feeling of human warmth.Though different in form, both types of help meant something to the respective receivers.Many people have an outdated 3)perception of volunteer work, 4)associating it with the 19th century ideal of 5)charitable deeds, done by the haves for the have-nots.However, offering help today does not require that one has money, knowledge or materials, and therefore the right to perform volunteer work is not 6)restricted to people who are able to give these things to others, but belongs to anyone who can benefit society in moral, spiritual and emotional ways that money alone cannot buy.In other words, anyone can volunteer, as long as they are willing to help.Furthermore, having a volunteering spirit gives one the ability to do a good deed at any time.Last year, CCTV, awarded the ?)2006 China Prize for People Who Move China?to a countryside woman who, for 30 years, has been taking care of five senior citizens, with whom she has no blood ties.Public recognition was not the driving force behind her years of tireless

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen,good afternoon.I believe we need a longer March in China.On March 5th, 2005,I volunteered to visit an orphanage with may classmates.The kids there were very excited about our visit and we had a great time together.A little girl impressed me most.She followed me everywhere and kept asking me questions of all kinds.Before we left the orphanage, I said to the little girl ,“Maybe, I can make one of your wishes come true.If you had just one wish, what would it be?” After a short hesitation, she replied,“ I wish......I wish every month was March, because you won't come back to me after March.Nobody comes back to me after March.” I was shocked by her answer.I felt great pain inside and realized that something was not going right.The month of March is called “the Month of Lei Feng in China.” Lei Feng was a Chinese soldior admired for his willness to help others.In memory of him, it is advocated that we do some voluntary work in March.Is there anything wrong with "the month of Lei Feng? Of course not.Helping others through voluntary work is a glorious tradition we should always treasure.However ,one month alone, is not enough to keep the little girl's heart warm throughout the year, one month alone, is not enough to bring our love and care to those who are always in need.We need a longer March in China.March should last all year round.What can we do to achieve this goal,then? What can we do to make the little girl's dream come true? Here two of my suggestions.The first is, we should continue to promote the idea that when we give, we also receive.We should be grateful to those who need our love and care, for it is through helping them that we receive acknowledgement and respect, and it is through helping them that we realize our personal value and achieve a sense of belonging.I feel grateful to those children in the orphanage.I t was thses children who helped me realize that I am useful and I am needed.My second suggestion is, everybody, if possible , should start doing voluntary work right now.Do not wait until you are free.Do not wait until you get rich.Take action now ,and make a commitment to it.Maybe our small donation to poor children won't immediately change their fates.Maybe our smiles we bring to the patients fighting against cancer won't immediately relieve their pain.But ,I believe, our consistent and constant efforts throughout the year will surely bring voluntary work

in China toward a better future.Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, we are approaching the end of March.When March is over , do we stop giving love and care to those who need it ? When March is over , do we pack up our volunteer spirit and store it in the closet until next year? No, that was not wha we want!We want a longer March.We need a longer March, long enough to warm up those lonely and hopeless hearts, long enough to allow the flowers of our volunteer spirit to bloom and grow forever.Thank you!

When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all.When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university.And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate.How pathetic!When we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic.Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be “fulfilled”? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called “reality”? What IS the reality actually?

Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies.Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, “man could not fly” was still regarded as the “reality”.Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.People say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams.And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality;People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality;Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance IS the reality.Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? I have a friend who just started his career as a teacher in a primary school.Weeks ago, he asked me to raise a topic for his mid-term composition test.I was curious why he chose me to give a topic, because he is a teacher himself.He said that he wanted something the students can really show their different ideas.Without thinking, I told him to let his students write about what they would do if they were given one million US dollars.My friend left with satisfaction, and I fell into my old memories.It reminded me of my old days in primary school.We were learning to do narration in the fifth grade's Chinese class.Our teacher required us to write a composition with the topic “My Most Unforgettable Day” with our real experience.When papers came back, half of the students wrote about the first day they came to school.The rest of the compositions were all about picking money on the streets and giving it to policemen, or helping a blind man cross the street.Of course I was among them.But I remember very clearly, that one student, only one student gave something different.He wrote about the day that he first kissed a girl.I read his composition.After all these years, I can't recite every word, but I dare to say, that even Shakespeare, may not be able to write as equally good when he was 11 years old.The composition was written out of real experience and genuine emotions.Contrary to those fake stories, it sounds real and natural.But the kid was scored zero.Our teacher thought the content was unhealthy, I'm sure you know the meaning of this Chinglish word “unhealthy”.That was 15 years ago.When you read those compositions, and you feel that half of our population is blind, so all those kids could have a chance to help a blind man cross the street, and every one of us has a hole in our pocket, so all those kids could have a chance to pick up the lost money and give it to policemen.A few days ago, my friend sent me an e-mail of all the copies of his students' compositions.I have to say, I was sadly disillusioned.Among those papers 40% said that they wanted to donate the money to people in poverty, so their children can go to school.The rest compositions are much more alike.Some wanted to support the panda protection project, some wanted to buy books to enlarge their knowledge.One student even said that he would like to spend his one million dollars on the effort to cure AIDS.I was more astonished to find that a ten-year-old child knew what AIDS really is.We all have been kids, and we knew what we had once wanted.But, there was no composition about spending the money on video games, nice clothes, chocolates, ice-creams and expensive toys.Like 15 years ago, students won't tell the truth of their hearts.It has always been our dream to open our children's hearts.We encourage them to describe their dreams, and acted as if we are ready to accept their thoughts.But the fact is that, children are scared by the zero marked on their papers.They are trained to say what we want to hear.People compare children to flowers of tomorrow.And parents dream about the scenery that roses, tulips, daffodils flourish in the future.But down the road we are going on, in the future, or the future of future, only one kind of flower can be found.And that's the flower we like most.徐鸿达：外交学院选手，第十一届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛季军。

Last month, I happened to watch an interview of a Chinese student studying abroad.At one point the hostess asked: “For how long have you been away from home?” “Three years,” he said.“How do you keep in touch with your parents?” “We wrote emails,” the young man replied proudly.“Then I guess your parents learned how to send an email just because of you, right?” Having heard this from the hostess, the young man was speechless for a long time.Indeed, in the world today, it is not easy for the elder generation to keep up to date with the rapid development of technology.This story reminded me of my concerns when I first left home for college three years ago: My parents don't understand English.They couldn't identify the buttons marked in English on our remote controls.So when I was away from home, who would help them select Chinese subtitles when they wanted to watch a foreign movie on our DVD? My parents don't use pinyin, the phonetic symbols for Chinese.Therefore, they couldn't input Chinese characters into their cell phones using the keyboard.Without me, whom could they depend on when they needed to reply to a text message? I worried a lot, so before I left, I carefully prepared a flow chart on how to operate the DVD player, and stored as many template messages in my parents' phones as I could possibly think of.Fortunately, my efforts did work for my parents.However, what makes me more optimistic is that society at large is becoming more concerned about the elder generation, and the fruit of technological innovation is no longer believed to be an asset only for the young people.Today, with simple Chinese instructions on the remote control, even my 80-year-old grandfather can play his favorite TV program on a DVD.Last year, with the money I earned from a part-time job, I bought my mother a new cell phone which supports handwritten messages instead of inputting words through a keyboard.And now, my mother no longer has to use the templates messages I've stored for her, instead, she now sends me messages as long as 300 words.The joy I have when reading those text messages is inexpressible, not only because of the words she writes, but also because our technology has indeed become a real blessing in her life.Two years ago, the counter service in our neighborhood bank was replaced by an ATM station.With those intelligent machines, people can carry out all their regular banking services.My father, however, was not used to such a change.Thereafter, he always walked three blocks further to a bank with a counter to use their services.In the future, however, this will no longer happen, because when I went to that ATM station again last spring festival, I found a delightful change: the terminals there have adopted a voice guidance system.While I was there, I noticed a grey haired man using the voice instructions.And despite his hesitation between pressing the buttons, he left the bank with a satisfactory smile.What a marvel!My vision for the future was unfolding before my very eyes.At that moment, I rejoiced thinking of my father, someday, standing there using the banking service.I rejoiced thinking of myself that when I become old, the new inventions can still ease my life rather than making the life harder.

One in four computers in the world comes from China;but from each computer produced, China earns only what 10 apples are worth.I read this in People’ Daily not long ago.While the force of globalization has spread Chinese-made products all over the world and earned China the name “world’s factory”, China earns very little profits from this kind of low-cost production.It’s even been said that China has to export 800 million shirts to get an airplane.The problem is, China has involved in countless processes of production, but doesn’t necessarily have the intellectual property rights.If all we can be is part of the low-cost, labor-oriented production process, we’ll remain in a passive, disadvantaged position and gradually lose our competitive edge in the global arena.To develop China’s creative industry, transforming products from “made in China” to “created in China” has become one of China’s major tasks.This transformation will be no less like a marathon, requiring much effort especially that from Chinese enterprises, the major force in Chinese economy.Though there’ s no one in front leading us which direction to run, there’s much to learn from some Chinese enterprises that have already found the right strategies and are shining on the global stage.These strategies involve brand identity establishment, technological innovation and modern management system.Firstly, the brand that I mentioned above is an intangible yet most valuable asset to a company.It gains credibility from consumers, thus constituting the reason for consumers to buy habitually.Tong Ren Tang, the largest producer of traditional Chinese medicine, remains one of the oldest surviving brand names.The credibility that it gained through quality products has made its name known worldwide and maintains its recognized brand.The second strategy is innovation of technology, which helps enterprises gain its core competency.In the global era where technology emerges at a rapid speed, one has to adopt the latest technology, and also to compete for the speed of developing new ones.The success of Haier, the third largest household appliances manufacturer in the world, lies in its constant innovation.Over the past 16 years, Haier has invested a total of 7 billion RMB in technological development, using 6 percent of its income for scientific research and the development of new products.At present, Haier's development operational speed is turning out 1.3 new products a day, maintaining its upper-hand in the fierce competition.The third strategy is the establishment of modern management system.New Hope Group, the National Leading Enterprise for Agriculture, started from family-owned business.When the business was soaring and situation was changing, the family members had divergent views of management.To make sure of the development of their business, they decided to turn their company into a limited liability one, distributing property rights efficiently.Because of this, the company increased its competitiveness rapidly.Establishing a modern management system will lead to efficient levels of division of labor and efficient patterns in the business cycle.With brand identity, technology and flexibility, China’s creative industries will blossom and give China the cutting edge in the fierce global competition.One day, China will stand firm and proud, with national brands thriving on the global markets, and with millions of products tagged “created in China”, instead of “made in China”.魏莉薇：清华大学选手，第十三届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛亚军。演讲稿：Globalization: Time for Cultural Discovery

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen，As I stand here speaking to you in English, I am already globalized.While shopping, I see the fair Chinese ladies carrying Prada handbags, I find they are globalized.Watching Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings with friends—yes, you can anticipate the refrain, we are all globalized!

In this era of globalization, we are one way or another all globalized.But realize this: when people’s heads turn to the fresh things that globalization literally delivers to our doors, the traditional things which we take for granted become ignored and sometimes forgotten.ConsiderLao Qiang, an ancient form of opera.It has almost vanished from the stage and only fewer than 20 people know how to sing it.So, how can we discover and explore our traditional culture? How can we rejuvenate and share them with the whole world? Well, there are three factors we need to keep in mind.To begin with, the mass media plays a vital role in discovering traditional culture and connecting it with the widest possible audience.One evening in 2005, for example, when my father and I were watching the final round of the popular TV showStar Road, we both became fans for a contestant named A Bao.We were attracted by his high pitched tenor voice, his traditional Shaanxi folk tunes and Shaanxi costumes.Apparently we were not his only fans.Star Road has aroused great popular interest in Shaanxi folk music.Such media can help popular audiences to discover lost arts and introduce people to them for the first time.The mass media raise the people’s popular interest in the traditional arts, but it is the performing artists who really develop the people’s understanding of traditional culture.Yang Liping’s dance show Yunnan Image, based on primitive Yunnan dance style, has had an enormous influence in and out of China.Yang has recovered for us the primitive life in Yunnan.It is the raw and unadorned beauty of nature in her dancing that moves her audience most.We desperately need professional artists’ endeavor to discover traditional arts, to train apprentices, and to project our traditional culture on the global stage.The third strategic factor in promoting our culture in global competition is an audience who knows what and how to appreciate our culture.But today’s youth—tomorrow’s explorers—are ill equipped to appreciate the traditional culture.Take myself as an example: I have had no painting or music classes since senior high school!No extracurricular activities like Chinese painting or calligraphy since primary school!What paltry little we learn about our traditional Chinese culture is relegated to a few lines and pictures in history books.We need our government and our school system to give us a better opportunity to embrace our traditional culture and discover its rich legacy for ourselves.Ladies and gentlemen, the age of globalization should be a time for cultural discovery, not cultural extinction!Our traditional culture needs our concern and support to survive!With our combined efforts, we can save our valuable culture from extinction and showcase it, so it can shine brightly on the global stage, shared and enjoyed by people all around the world!蒋春晖：宁波大学选手，第十三届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛季军。|

演讲稿：Living without globalization

Take a look at the street, we can see people walking around in Nike and Adidas，beyond the curb, long lines of vehicles shuttle like wind on the tar among which there’re Mercedes-Benz ,BMW, Toyota ,and some of the Volkswagen whose price is definitely not so “volks” at all.They’re all heading for the same direction: the New Oriental School, coz the Olympics is around and learning English is currently the hottest way blowing away your after-work time and money in town.Everything about this picture is so global that you can hardly tell if it’s Bei Jing or Belgium.However, there’s one grey speck on this splendid picture of globalization I just can’t shift my eyes away from.It’s a migrant worker covered with dirt.Pushing a large cart of bricks 5 times his own weight with his skinny arms, the man was about my age.His eyes hollow holes, for there’s nothing but the hardship of survival in there.Was he married? Was he smart? Did he go to middle school? Or perhaps primary school? Where was he from? Is there anyone waiting for him at home?

As we look out to globalization with great expectation, there’s also crisis lying within.But the crisis was not brought onto us from anywhere out there.It lies within our system and was made by ourselves.Some call it regional bias, some call it household permit system, but not matter what name it bears.It’s the same thing we see in this country: born a countryman, always a countryman.And countryman here is not just a nickname suggesting where you live.It means that you can’t have a lot of the basic public benefits like free compulsory education and medical insurance like the city men have.It means you would have to be times as outstanding as students from the metropolitans in exams to be admitted into good schools.In means, very much likely, in that migrant worker’s case, that you can work and live in the city honestly for 10 years but people still despises you because they think they are somehow superior.It’s true that globalization is all over the air, but despite it’s the same air that we breathe ,I wonder how many of them feel it even exsit.Does learning to compete in the global era involve migrant workers? I believe few would think so.Because usually what we care about are things like trade surplus, intercultural communication and Paris Hilton.But does it not involve migrant workers?

Let’s make an interesting assumption here.Today, I see a lot of young faces in this building, in 10 years, many of us will have our children.And I suppose that in 10 years, the migrant worker I saw on the street the other day and many like him will have their children.I can’t help wondering with this globalization gap keep lying between the two of us, can my child work together with his children for the country in the future competition of the global era? And will this country be able to win the competition without its rural people which takes up about 80% of its total population?

No!This situation must be changed!And the time is now!The long and weary journey to its final solution may take decades, or even centuries.But it starts with our little good will.If everyone in this room donate 10 yuan to the Hope project, we might be able to get the son of a migrant worker through junior school.By which we’re not only helping them but also helping ourselves.If we want to learn to compete with others, we’ll first have to learn to take care of our own man , and if we want to learn to live with globalization,we’ll first learn it, from those who live without it.
