I dedicated the past two years to understanding how people achieve their dreams.When we think about the dreams we have, and the dent we want to leave in the universe, it is striking to see how big of an overlap there is between the dreams that we have and projects that never happen.我花了两年的时间去理解:人们如何实现他们的梦想。说到我们的梦想、我们想要在这个宇宙留下的痕迹,让人吃惊的是:我们的梦想常常只是梦。

You know the story, right? The tech guy built a mobile app and sold it very fast for a lot of money.You know the story may seem real, but I bet it’s incomplete.If you go investigate further, the guy has done 30 apps before and he has done a master’s on the topic, a Ph.D.He has been working on the topic for 20 years.你肯定听过这样的故事: 一个技术男开发了一个移动应用,并迅速转卖赚了很多钱。这个故事可能是真的,但是很可能是不完整的。如果你深入研究就发现,这个人在之前已经开发了30个应用,他有相关的硕士和博士学历,他研究这个领域已经20年了。

This is really interesting.I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success.I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process.And, voila!I got in.People may think it’s an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that I took life and education seriously.You overnight success story is always a result of everything you’ve done in your life through that moment.这很有意思。我自己本身在巴西也是一个“一夜成名”的故事。我来自一个普通家庭,麻省理工大学(MIT)申请截止日期两个星期前,我开始申请。哇啦,我被录取了!人们可能认为这是“一夜成名”,但是这背后是我17年来对生活和教育的执着努力。“一夜成名”总是你之前所有努力加起来的结果。

Three: and it’s very subtle but very important.Decide to settle when growth is guaranteed.So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue and everything is set.Time to settle.第三点不太明显但是很重要。你的生活很不错,你组建的团队很棒。你们的收入持续增长,一切都很好―― 可以休息了。

When I launched my first book, I worked really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil.With that over three million people downloaded it, over 50000 people bought physical copies.When I wrote a sequel, some impact was guaranteed.Even if I did little, sales would be okay.But okay is never okay.When you’re growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak.Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that’s great already.But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions.That’s why I decided, with my new book to go to every single state of Brazil.And I can already see a higher peak.There’s no time to settle down.在我出版了我的第一本书之后,我非常努力在巴西到处宣传。伴随我的努力,超过300万人下载了这本书,超过5万人买了印刷版。当我写续集的时候,影响力已经得到保障,即使我只付出一点点,销售量也应该还可以。但是“还可以”,是永远不够的。

Fourth tip, and that’s really important.Believe the fault is someone else’s.4、相信错误永远是别人的

I constantly see people saying, “Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest.” “Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn’t go well.” or “I can’t find good talent, my team is so below expectations.”

If you have dreams, it’s your responsibility to make them happen.Yes, it may be hard to find talent.Yes, the market may be bad.But if no one invested in your idea, if no one brought your product, for sure, there is something there that is your fault.如果你有梦想,让梦想实现是你的责任。是的,人才也许很难找,是的,市场也许很糟糕,但是如果没有人愿意对你的想法进行投资,如果没有人买你的产品,这其中肯定是因为你做错了什么。

Definitely.You need to get your dreams and make them happen.And no one achieved their goals alone.But if you didn’t make them happen, it’s your fault and no one else’s.Be responsible for your dreams.肯定!你需要努力把你的梦想变成现实。没有人可以一个人单独实现梦想,但是如果你不努力实现它,那是你自己的错而非他人。你需要对你的梦想负责。

And one last tip, and this one is really important as well.Believe that the only things that matter are the dreams themselves.Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, there were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work.You could see that they were sweating and this was tough.And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak.Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? “Yes!We made it, we’re at the top!”

Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, “Okay, let’s go down.”

5、相信只有梦想本身是最重要的

最后一点也是非常重要的一点。我曾经看到过一个广告,很多朋友在一起,我们在爬山,这是一座很高的山,他们爬得很辛苦,你能看到他们汗流浃背很累,他们往上爬,最终爬到了顶峰。当然,他们决定庆祝,对吗? 开始庆祝,有人说 “耶!我们到啦,我们到达顶峰啦!” 两秒钟以后,其中两人互相看了看说: “那么,我们下山吧。”

Life is never about the goals themselves.Life is about the journey, yes you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, but people think that you have dreams and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it’s a magical place where happiness will be all around, but achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not.人生不是关于目标本身,而是关于旅程。当然,你应该享受目标本身,但是人们往往觉得如果你有梦想,而你实现梦想的时候,那是一个神奇的地方,那里被幸福环绕。但是梦想实现的那一刻只是短暂的瞬间,而你的人生不是一瞬。

The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey.That is best way.And your journey is simple it’s made of steps.Some steps will be right on.Sometimes you will trip.If it’s right on, celebrate, because some people wait a lot to celebrate.And if you tripped, turn that into something to learn.If every step becomes something to learn or something to celebrate, you will for sure enjoy the journey.真正实现所有梦想的唯一办法就是:尽情享受旅程的每一步。这是最好的办法。你的旅程很简单―― 它是由一步一步组成的。有的你会走得很顺利,有的时候你也会被绊倒。如果很顺利,那么庆祝吧,因为有的人等很久才能庆祝,如果被绊倒了,把它变成学习的机会。如果每一步都是用来学习或者庆祝,你肯定会享受这个旅程。

So, five tips.Believe in overnight success.Believe someone else has the answers for you.Believe that when growth is guaranteed you should settle down.Believe the fault is someone else’s.And believe that only the goals themselves matter.Believe me, if you do that, you will destroy your dreams.总结一下,5个办法:相信一夜成名,相信别人有你需要的答案,相信在一时的成功面前应该止步,相信错误永远是别人的,相信只有目标本身是重要的。相信我,如果你做了以上这些,你肯定能成功毁灭你的梦想。

大学生是一个有着激昂梦想以及饱满精神状态的一个群体,我们初涉世事,却激情飞扬,从不因荆棘满布而放缓逐梦的脚步。我们也是幸福的一代,改革开放,经济腾飞,给了我们坚强的后盾,带给了我们无数的机遇。

只是,如何把握住这机遇,如何在这经济腾飞的年代里实现我们的人生价值、绽放我们的青春梦想、在创建文明城市的浩荡步伐里出谋划策呢?

Sailing for dream in the civilization and happiness

Facing towards the fluttering flag, living happily in the wings of China’s reformation, responding to the calling of Zhuhai Special zone government, we, the college students, carry with our dreams, sail for dreams, and struggle for starting a new undertaking.College students are a hopeful group that has thrilled dreams and high spirits, we are just stepping into the society but we have high passion, and we will never slow down ourselves chasing our dreams.We are also living in the welfare age.After the reformation, the economy is increasing sharply, and our nation, now is our stable supporter, bringing us numerous opportunities.However, how can we, the college students, grasp such kind of opportunities? How can we realize our value of lives, bloom our youth of dreams, plan our active future in the swiftly developing era, and even, in the strong armies of constructing the civilized city?

First of all, we should arm ourselves with our professional knowledge so that we can make full preparation for the realization of our dreams and the further prosperity of the Special Economic Zone.What’s more, we should also improve and develop our interpersonal skills and managerial ability, which can lay a solid foundation of our dreams.Last but not the least, we should be grateful to everything now we have and make a close connection to society.There is no doubt that so much convenience the Special Economic Zone has offered to us, we absolutely need to make practical use of what we earn and have a grateful heart and do whatever we can do to make a return.Even if we cannot make a great change to the society, however, we can at least decorate Zhuhai, such a beautiful coastal city, like a bunch of fresh grass, and try to be a printer to draw a colorful, hopeful and prosperous painting for Zhuhai’ s sustainable development.Because of the dreams, we, the youth, live with meaningfulness.Because of the dreams, we live in happiness.Because of the dreams, we live in hopefulness.Sailing for dream in the civilization and happiness, for our dreams, for our future, let’s fight for it!

然后,我想问一下在座的各位同学有多少是一边做题一边查生词?如果你们觉得这样可以学到东西,不好意思,大错特错!这样只会让你们的时间付出得没有任何价值。不管你在做题的时候碰到多少生词,麻烦大家忍住,不要去查,就凭着感觉做,时间长了,随便一个题目给你,一读答案就出来了,这就是传说中的语感!那是不是说生词不用查呢?当然要查,但是是在你做完所有的题目以后再去查,而且是用词典不是用妈妈的手机,而且的而且,你要有一个专用的单词本作为课外词汇的拓展资料。我就不信,这样坚持一两年你会学不好英语?

今天,我高兴地同大家一起,参加这次将成为我国历史上为了争取自由而举行的最伟大的示威集会。

100年前,一位伟大的美国人--今天我们就站在他象征性的身影下--签署了《解放宣言》。这项重要法令的颁布,对于千百万灼烤于非正义残焰中的黑奴,犹如带来希望之光的硕大灯塔,恰似结束漫漫长夜禁锢的欢畅黎明。

然而,100年后,黑人依然没有获得自由。100年后,黑人依然悲惨地蹒跚于种族隔离和种族歧视的枷锁之下。100年后,黑人依然生活在物质繁荣翰海的贫困孤岛上。100年后,黑人依然在美国社会中间向隅而泣,依然感到自己在国土家园中流离漂泊。

所以,我们今天来到这里,要把这骇人听闻的情况公诸于众。

从某种意义上说,我们来到国家的首都是为了兑现一张支票。我们共和国的缔造者在拟写宪法和独立宣言的辉煌篇章时,就签署了一张每一个美国人都能继承的期票。这张期票向所有人承诺--不论白人还是黑人--都享有不可让渡的生存权、自由权和追求幸福权。

然而,今天美国显然对她的有色公民拖欠著这张期票。美国没有承兑这笔神圣的债务,而是开始给黑人一张空头支票--一张盖著“资金不足”的印戳被退回的支票。但是,我们决不相信正义的银行会破产。我们决不相信这个国家巨大的机会宝库会资金不足。

因此,我们来兑现这张支票。这张支票将给我们以宝贵的自由和正义的保障。

我们来到这块圣地还为了提醒美国:现在正是万分紧急的时刻。现在不是从容不迫悠然行事或服用渐进主义镇静剂的时候。现在是实现民主诺言的时候。现在是走出幽暗荒凉的种族隔离深谷,踏上种族平等的阳关大道的时候。现在是使我们国家走出种族不平等的流沙,踏上充满手足之情的磐石的时候。现在是使上帝所有孩子真正享有公正的时候。

忽视这一时刻的紧迫性,对于国家将会是致命的。自由平等的朗朗秋日不到来,黑人顺情合理哀怨的酷暑就不会过去。1963年不是一个结束,而是一个开端。

如果国家依然我行我素,那些希望黑人只需出出气就会心满意足的人将大失所望。

在黑人得到公民权之前,美国既不会安宁,也不会平静。反抗的旋风将继续震撼我们国家的基石,直至光辉灿烂的正义之日来临。

但是,对于站在通向正义之宫艰险门槛上的人们,有一些话我必须要说。在我们争取合法地位的过程中,切不要错误行事导致犯罪。我们切不要吞饮仇恨辛酸的苦酒,来解除对于自由的饮渴。

我们应该永远得体地、纪律严明地进行斗争。我们不能容许我们富有创造性的抗议沦为暴力行动。我们应该不断升华到用灵魂力量对付肉体力量的崇高境界。

席卷黑人社会的新的奇迹般的战斗精神,不应导致我们对所有白人的不信任--因为许多白人兄弟已经认识到:他们的命运同我们的命运紧密相连,他们的自由同我们的自由休戚相关。他们今天来到这里参加集会就是明证。

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation.This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free.One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check.When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.So we have come to cash this check--a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now.This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children.Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro.This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights.The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice.In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.We cannot walk alone.And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead.We cannot turn back.There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations.Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells.Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality.You have been the veterans of creative suffering.Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident;that all men are created equal.”

I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.American dream即美国梦,代表了美国开国以来,无数欧洲移民和难民,凭自己一双手在新大陆开拓土地和创造财富的故事,是美国人共同的梦想。马丁路德金很技巧地不断重复Dream这个字眼,唤起美国人的记忆。

演说中,马丁路德金也善用重复的技巧于其它字眼身上,例如︰With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.可以设想,马丁路德金当日用雄浑的黑人声腔,在广场上对着万千黑人和白人,不断重复Together这个字,加上他有力的双臂,煽动力之强可想而知。难怪美国政府也不能容忍,于是,没有人知道为什么,一名刺客在一间汽车酒店中,用一颗子弹夺去了他的生命。

马丁路德金的演讲对象主要是黑人,当时黑人一般教育程度不高,因此他在演说中没有引用什么名人、哲学家的金句,反而很聪明地引用了一首黑人很熟悉的儿歌,令听众产生认同感,从而加强其演说的威力︰

My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing:

Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountainside, Let freedom ring.马丁路德金在演讲的最后部分成功控制节奏,将演讲推向口号的高潮︰Free at last!free at last!thank God almighty, we are free at last!演讲本来不宜使用口号,但如果运用得当,却可以将民众的情绪推向高峰。
