It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.

“My dear Mr.Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”

Mr.Bennet replied that he had not.

“But it is,” returned she;“for Mrs.Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”

“的确租出去了,”她说,“朗格太太刚刚上这儿来过,她把这件事的底细,一五一十地告诉了我。”

Mr.Bennet made no answer.

“Do not you want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently.“你难道不想知道是谁租去的吗?”

“You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”

“既是你要说给我听,我听听也无妨。”

This was invitation enough.

“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs.Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England;that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed with Mr.Morris immediately;that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”

“哦!亲爱的,你得知道,郎格太太说,租尼日斐花园的是个阔少爷,他是英格兰北部的人;听说他星期一那天,乘着一辆驷马大轿车来看房子,看得非常中意,当场就和莫理斯先生谈妥了;他要在‘米迦勒节’以前搬进来,打算下个周未先叫几个佣人来住。”

“What is his name?”

“这个人叫什么名字?”

“Bingley.”

“彬格莱。”

“Is he married or single?”

“有太太的呢,还是单身汉?”

“Oh!single, my dear, to be sure!A single man of large fortune;four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!”

“噢!是个单身汉,亲爱的,确确实实是个单身汉!一个有钱的单身汉;每年有四五千磅的收入。真是女儿们的福气!”

“How so? how can it affect them?”

“这怎么说?关女儿女儿们什么事?”

“My dear Mr.Bennet,” replied his wife, “how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.”

“我的好老爷,”太太回答道,“你怎么这样叫人讨厌!告诉你吧,我正在盘算,他要是挑中我们一个女儿做老婆,可多好!”

“Is that his design in settling here?”

“他住到这儿来,就是为了这个打算吗?”

“Design!nonsense, how can you talk so!But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes.”

“打算!胡扯,这是哪儿的话!不过,他倒作兴看中我们的某一个女儿呢。他一搬来,你就得去拜访拜访他。”

“I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better;for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr.Bingley might like you the best of the party.”

“我不用去。你带着女儿们去就得啦,要不你干脆打发她们自己去,那或许倒更好些,因为你跟女儿们比起来,她们哪一个都不能胜过你的美貌,你去了,彬格莱先生倒可能挑中你呢?”

“My dear, you flatter me.I certainly have had my share of beauty, but I do not pretend to be any thing extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty.”

“我的好老爷,你太捧我啦。从前也的确有人赞赏过我的美貌,现在我可有敢说有什么出众的地方了。一个女人家有了五个成年的女儿,就不该对自己的美貌再转什么念头。”

傲慢与偏见读书笔记英文2 Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities.Mrs.Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters.Mr.Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr.Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior.Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different.Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others.Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion.Mary likes reading classic books.(Actually she is a pedant.)Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia.Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century. The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book. The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”.The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs.Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time.Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions.Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions.Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century. In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr.Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married. In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind.A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages.Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage.Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?

Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems.Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics.I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic.Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

Reading Notes of Pride and Prejudice

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” This beginning sentence of the book seems to tell us the main story of the book is about the marriage of rich men.The heroine of the book is Elizabeth and at the chapter One, we are told that the father Mr.Bennet prefers Elizabeth among his daughters, in this case, Elizabeth must be a girl who is more special and intelligent. The story is about love and marriage.Charlotte married Collins because his fortune and she feels nervous about her age even the man is so old-fashioned and ingratiating. However, their marriage is about money and they do not get the real happy. The other man Wickham is a handsome but a man who is a liar.He lies to Elizabeth to gain her appreciation. And his love with Lydia is shallow and about appearance. The love of Jane and Bingley has a better ending. They have love in the relationship and appreciate each other because of the deeper virtue. But they do come through a lot because the misunderstanding they had before. The love of Elizabeth and the hero of the book Darcy responses the title Pride and Prejudice. In the eye of Elizabeth, Darcy is no doubt pride and arrogant.Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth and proposes marriage to her, but he is still very arrogant so Elizabeth refuses him directly.Darcy

feels hard hit and regrets of being arrogant. However, Elizabeth has a prejudice about Darcy at the very beginning and mistaken believes in Wickham but she finally knows the truth and feels shame of her family.Darcy moves Elizabeth with his pleasant virtue in the end.

In this term,I read a book which named

.The author is Jane Austen,.When I first knew this art work, because I watched the movie acted by Kara Knightly and so many famous stars. But this term I read the original work. And I realize the difference between them. After I briefly knew the author-Jane Austen.About her life ,her experience.I found she was an sensitive, strong in mental ,maverick and independent woman.I do really admire her.In 1775 December she birthed to this world. She has eight brothers and sisters. Her father, who had served in that area for forty years, and he also was a encyclopedic clergyman. And the same her mother ,came from an welfare family, she also had certain cultural accomplishment. Therefore, even though Jane hadn’t go to the official school, because of the great family condition and the environment of reading books. All of those give her the chances to learn by herself and then build up the interests about writing. When she was only thirteen or fourteen years old,she stared to writing something she liked. This showed her talent about her language expression. In the1800,her father retired, and they moved to somewhere, but Jane didn’t like there. At there,Jane refused the marriage from a teenager who will inherited a large fortune, just because she didn’t like him.The gods throw out the questions ,we human need to find ,to choose the answers by ourselves. The answer from this problem is probably not “no” to us now.Although our hearts still have some expectation for love, we believe that love is sacred. But gradually, like wealth, background, politics, more and more things go beyond love, above all else, to our life,to our heart. In 1796 ,at 20 she met Lefroy. She fall in love with this clever young Irish lawyer. However, the pastor's family-Jane’s father wanted the son-in-law would have the financial strength in the future but at that time lefroy was a poor boy.Lefroy’s family who had six children, was also determined to marry with a wealthy family, so he was asked to return to Ireland. They never saw each other again. In Jane’s letter to her sister Cassandra, said: "Finally, the day has come, and I will say goodbye to Tom Lefroy. And when you get this letter, it's all over.I can't help but cry at the thought. Her unforgettable first love was forced to break up,she chose never marry for the whole life, and put the all emotions and feelings devoted to the literary creation. What make me impressively is her attitude to the people ,world, and to herself. The world and people hurt her ,break up she and her lover, make her never marry, but she still keep her mind to the world, put all her love to the literary creation, write the sweet, profound work for the people. To tell them ,among the millions of people in the world, it likes a miracle to meet someone you love who loves you as much as you do.And do not cherish this person is how ignorant and pitiful.A person may be arrogant but not vain.In most cases, pride is nothing more than what we think of ourselves ,but vanity refers to how we value other people’s evaluation of us.In fact, there are few people I really like. The more I look at the world, the less satisfied I am, and the more I believe that every day, I believe that all kinds of people are capricious, and that the good things what appeared on the surface are untrustworthy. But then I can't tell you exactly when, where, what kind of style , what kind of talk I heard, which all of those made me fall in love with you gradually. It was a long time ago. When I find myself beginning to fall in love with you, I've been half way. This book was wrote the story about later of 18th,at that time the England acting the industrial revolution. And there are many contradiction between the various social classes, but Jane described every characters’ impression ,what they talking and what they considered,She telling us the contradiction which happened in the small environment-the England countryside rather than writing revolution to express the change to the people and the whole society form the industrial revolution. She wrote four marriages to express her own view of marriage and to show social contradictions through the impact of economic interests on people's love and marriage. What makes me the most impressive is that selfish Mrs.Bennett said a lot of beautiful, sweet words to Bingley to make him happy at the beginning. She didn’t care about the spirits, quality ,appearance, knowledge what kind of people he is and if he has a heart which is full of love to her daughter. She just be excited about his annual income of 5000 pounds. What a ridiculous thing! And there are so many tiny things, all of them can deeply reflect the bad atmosphere of the money supremacy of the society at that time. After I finished reading this book,I have a question :Why Darcy is so pride? On the surface, because he birthed with a golden spoon which has great background, and his v is pretty high. But I think,.This is determined by the class contradiction at that time.At the first dancing party,Darcy wouldn’t like to dance with countryside girls. He looked down on the girls any of them, even beautiful Elizabeth was also rejected. In the later Darcy and Bingley's sister ,they prevented to Jane and Bingley ‘s marriage and autocratic, egoistic Mrs.Catherine on Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage obstruction. What is called’ Upper class society”to the middle class which lived in the countryside discrimination.Especially Collins talked a lot of beautiful words,he was stupid ,false. He acted obsequiously, and he is very affected..All of them reflected the deep impression form the class disparity. The writer Jane Austin herself is a member of the middle class in England, and she is unmarried all her life. The social life state described in the book is a true portrayal of her own life. With distinctive times. The social life state described in the book is very interesting. And all characters’ have various of personality on their own. Those personalities are distinct with others and vivid.Elisabeth is the most character what I like. She is the most perfect female in the author’s mind.Though her appearance is not very beautiful to her sister Jane ,she has a great courage and courageous spirit. In order to get heritage of the Benet ,Collins seek marriage to the beautiful Elizabeth, Elizabeth judged her emotions intellectually and refused to seek marriage decisively. When Mrs.Catchline came to ask the details about the marriage with Darcy, she was not afraid about the disparity between the classes and the difference between background. She expressed her mind bravely. All these situations made me like her gradually. But,there is no doubts that her prejudice made some difficulties for her and Darcy either. We often say: you can't look for people. But ti is very hard to do perfectly in our daily life.Just as the same as Elizabeth has some prejudice to Darcy.Wick ham officer, handsome, elegant and unconventional, stately and handsome also humorous, amiable and easy of approach.Compared with Darcy ,looked like Darcy is more prejudiced and be poor at speech.Wickham officer is much better on the surface. But who can imagine that the handsome officer is bite the band that feeds one and he also a rascally gambler, but Darcy looked like fish-blooded,indifferent actually he is a warm kind gentleman?Even smart Elizabeth was cheated with beautiful surface by Wickham either, believe the lies also produce prejudice to Darcy. This also teach us a truth that ,when we make friends with others,we couldn’t get puzzled by the beautiful appearance,we have to know their personality deeply. It is not always true to know from a third party that you know your friends in many directions and ways ,so that, you have to feel them yourself. The hero of this story-Darcy,he is totally an individual man.He got well education from he was a boy.He is generous, and he is willing to help others. He is the model of England nobility. He has indifferent face but he has a warm heart, though he looked fish-blooded,but actually his heart is full of love ,kind and peace. When Wikham wasted his heritage and wanted to abduct his sister to run away home and live money.Darcy still forgive him understandingly. At the same time,he also give him money. It is a very humane thing to do.When he was rejected by Elizabeth ,he knew that Ridiya would like to run away form home with Wikham ,and at the dangerous time that the Benet faced the difficulties,he throw the rancor all he should have go to Landon to find Elizabeth’s uncle finding Lidiya together and discussing the trouble solve them in person. But all of these things ,he never told Elizabeth,it is this love-never ask return what make me impressed. As the saying goes,no one is perfect.Pride is his biggest disadvantage. When I closed the book,I felt a lot of emotion,I realized the meaning of the live and how we be a good person on our best.

Will Elizabeth and Darcy marry each other in

reality?

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in

possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” This is the first sentence of the novel and it sets the tone for the whole story. Two aspects should be noticed: the story is about marriage, not love;and that marriage is based upon possession or money. If we bear this in mind, then it is rather strange to see that at the end of the novel the two humble girls should marry their wealthy Mr.Right.Actually, this is where the genius of Jane Austen shines brightly, that the comic ending is a sharp irony towards the 18th century, when the European society boasted heavily of wealth and social status. The Bennet couple is truly snobbish, especially the madam.Dig down into reasons why Mrs.Bennet is so eager to marry her five daughters and you will find that, at that time, a good marriage brings about a fortune to the family.Such fortune will sustain their life lest they will be swept out of the house and live in starvation after Mr.bennet dies.Just take a look at how the mother’s attitude towards Elizabeth changes when Mr.Collin is willing to propose to her daughter and when later on the girl turns him down. There is no better description than this to picture Mrs.Bennet’s characteristic and intention.Mr.Bingley’s sisters and Mr.Darcy’s aunt are representatives of the rich and upper class, but their fine taste does not varnish their narrow opinions of social stratum.By constantly saying ill of the Bennets and showing proud themselves, they convey the message that they despise the Bennets, they will not truck with them, let alone the marriage of the two families.Four marriages in total are mentioned in the novel and they share the same theme. If we consider the marriage of hooligan Wickham and silly Lydia as the outcome of the mere pursuit of money, then the one between Charlotte and Mr.Collin is a good example for girls in poor condition to gain social security.Clever as Charlotte, though not that handsome but she knows to seize every

chance to improve her life.Their marriage contains no love, but it doesn’t matter. And on the contrary they may well spend the rest of their life respectfully and peacefully, which seem ideal for lots of country girls. Then let’s look back at the two main couples.Jane and Bingley, both innocent and kind, have the only obstacle for their marriage----the disapproval of Bingley’s sisters and his friend. But given the fact that Bingley is a mature adult inherited a large fortune on his own, who has the power to stand in the way of his marriage when the man himself does not care about the girl’s family background? As we can see in the book, the two are in deep affection with each other from time to time, making it at least possible for them to get together in real life. But things are quite different and more complex for Elizabeth and Darcy.Their social stratums are in great disparity and there are strong objection from Darcy’s aunt. Then there is Lydia’s elopement adds to the family’s ill-reputation.Even their relationship is not that stable. Both of their pride and prejudice have blocked their

comprehensive understanding towards each other.Actually, what Darcy comments initially at Jane reveal his sense: “With parents like that, the girl’s chance of a good marriage is materially lessen.” Darcy, as a noble gentleman, always behaves accord with his dignity. We should not blame him for his natural concern towards the vulgarity of Elizabeth’s family. On the other hand, Elizabeth, who is brought up in the lower class, cannot hide her disgust for Darcy’s cold and proud nature.Consider the huge divergence of the two, it’s not quite possible for them to get married in reality. However, their love “outweighs” all the obstacles and “betrays my sense” as Darcy puts it.Finally they get together in the fairytale ending. But, does love really have that great power? Or is it as a prank joke? Actually Jane Austen had just written such a fairytale to please us but to stab a trenchant into the unreasonable social

institution at the same time.It seems that the happier the ending is, the sharper it criticizes to the society. The truly civilized society should enable women’s happiness by providing a tolerable

atmosphere regarding possession and ranking but not to pin their hope on “love”.After all, not all men are as affectionate as Mr.Darcy.
