The hue and cry of Britain’s general electionobscures an inconvenient truth. The first peacetimecoalition since the 1930s is likely to be followed byanother inconclusive election. The old world of twoparty politics delivering decisive single partygovernment may be over.
David Cameron, prime minister, and Ed Miliband, theLabour party leader, still hope they can snatch outright victory on May 7.Voters appearunmoved. This has been a dispiriting campaign, where a few dozen swing constituencies havebeen targeted like battleground states in a US presidential election. For Cuyahoga County,Ohio, read Solihull, West Midlands.
A tactical, data-driven campaign mobilising core supporters ignores how Tony Blair and, morerecently, Angela Merkel in Germany reached out to the centre ground and won three successiveelections. The lesson should still hold true in Britain, despite the fragmentation of politicsrepresented by the rise of the Scottish National party and the europhobic UK Independenceparty.
Five years ago, the prospect of coalition government attracted dire predictions of instability inmarkets and gridlock at Westminster.Neither proved true. The Conservative-Liberal Democratcoalition has shown European-style cohabitation can work.Curiously, Mr Cameron has nottrumpeted its successes. He has preferred to wage a campaign of fear.Labour, he argues, would prove untrustworthy on the economy;and a Labour government would be held hostageby a separatist Scottish National party. The risk of a cross-border leftist alliance is notnegligible;but even some Tories worry that its invocation encourages English nationalism.5年前曾流传一种悲观预言,认为联合政府上台将导致市场动荡,议会也将陷入僵局。
Labour’s campaign has also played relentlessly to its core vote.Mr Miliband has belatedlysigned up to balance the budget in the next parliament.Fearful of public sector unions, he hasnot specified where heavy spending cuts would fall.He has rarely met a market he did notconsider to be broken.Only Nick Clegg, the embattled Liberal Democrat leader, has occupiedthe centre ground. He has argued persuasively that the Lib Dems contributed to sensiblefiscal consolidation and tempered the wilder Tory impulses, particularly on Europe.
The Financial Times has no fixed party political allegiances, but we have a clear vision of thepriorities for the next administration.
The economic challenge goes beyond cutting public spending. The government must supportenterprise and job creation. The dependence on credit-fuelled consumer spending andLondon-based financial services must be reduced.Britain’s productivity gap must benarrowed, by long-delayed investment in infrastructure, education and housing.A newconstitutional settlement is needed, one that preserves the union and transfers powersrationally and fairly to the nations and regions of the UK.On Europe, it is time for constructiveengagement.A new relationship would recognise the UK is not part of the monetary core butis still a vital member of the European family of nations.
The choice is therefore between a dynamic, flexible and open economy delivering higher livingstandards for all, and a pinched nationalism that clings to the past.Little England or GreatBritain.
The UK is in far better shape than in 2010.Growth has picked up sharply. The numbers ofthose in work are at an all-time high.About 2m new jobs have been created. But austerityspells a joyless recovery and the public finances remain fragile. The deficit is shrinking to anexpected 4 per cent of national output this year. This is still too high but better than the near12 per cent when the coalition took over.
Britain needs a strong economy to fund the National Health Service and an ageing population. But a strong economy alone does not guarantee political stability.Today, the integrity of theUnited Kingdom remains at stake. The failure of the Scottish National party to win lastSeptember’s referendum on independence ought to have settled the issue for a generation. But if the SNP wins most of the 59 seats in Scotland, it could hold the balance of power atWestminster. At the very least, this will complicate new constitutional arrangements betweenEngland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland;at worst, it could stoke separatist fire northand south of the river Tweed.
The second constitutional question turns on Europe.Should the Conservatives win an outrightmajority, Mr Cameron has pledged to re-negotiate the terms of UK membership and hold anin-out referendum within two years. His move threatens to consume the first two years of aTory government. It could ultimately push Britain out of the bloc, a seismic change in thecountry’s relationship with its chief trading partners and for the balance of power in the EUitself. It might also break the Tory party. The preoccupation with Europe obscures a more troubling development.Britain’s standing inthe world has diminished. Her Majesty’s armed forces have shrunk, and her diplomats reducedto handing out export brochures for business.
Two bloody wars of choice, in Afghanistan and Iraq, have carried a high price.Politicians on theleft and right are increasingly looking inward. In Europe’s first post-cold war crisis in Ukraine, MrCameron has been a bystander, despite the UK being a signatory to the 1994 BudapestMemorandum covering Ukraine’s nuclear disarmament and territorial integrity. His insistenceon spending 0.7 per cent on overseas aid sits ill with his refusal to commit to 2 per cent of GDPfor the military.
The Conservatives’ economic record ought to provide a winning hand. The mix of a loosemonetary policy and a tight fiscal policy has worked.Mr Cameron and his chancellor GeorgeOsborne, supported by Mr Clegg, showed political courage to tackle the public finances andshrink the state. The Tories have also driven two promising shifts in Britain’s politicaldiscourse: the challenge to the benefits culture and the re-introduction of much-neededrigour into the country’s schools. Labour has been more competitive than expected.Mr Miliband has been vilified by the Tories, but he has stuck to his guns on Europe, refusing to cave in to demands for a referendum.Hiswillingness to stand his ground deserves credit.
Yet this cannot conceal the fundamental weakness in Labour’s plans.Mr Miliband ispreoccupied with inequality. His prescription is an increase in taxes such as restoring the 50plevel for high earners and imposing an ill-conceived mansion tax.
Mr Miliband has too often found himself on the wrong side of the argument. He promised tofreeze energy prices shortly before world prices collapsed. An already heavily regulatedbanking sector and private landlords are now in his sights. He has stepped too far away fromthe New Labour position that markets can be harnessed to progressive outcomes. At times,he appears to be fighting his campaign in the style of France’s François Hollande in 2012.True,Mr Hollande secured victory but at the price of a weak economy and an exodus of talent, oftento London.
At this delicate moment, the best outcome would be a continuation of the 2010 coalitionbetween the Conservatives and Lib Dems.Mr Clegg’s party has proved a responsible partner ingovernment.Tough decisions, such as the reversal of his party’s stance on university tuitionfees, will hurt the party. The Lib Dems would be more awkward in a second term coalition. It isalso far from clear whether they will have enough seats to be kingmakers with either the Toriesor Labour.
Voters must decide not just on the party but also on the combination which would have thebest chance of forming a stable, reform-minded government. The country would benefit fromthe countervailing force of Lib Dem moderation at Westminster. In seats where the Lib Demsare the incumbent or the main challenger, we would vote tactically for them.
Ultimately, however, there is only one leader and one party that can head the government. There are risks in re-electing Mr Cameron’s party, especially on Europe. But there are greaterrisks in not doing so.Its instincts on the economy, business and reform of public services arebroadly right.Mr Miliband has not offered a credible economic prospectus and would apply abrake on enterprise. In the circumstances, the FT would like to see a Conservative-ledadministration.
Peter and Wolf

Book Report Of PETER PAN
I spent one month reading the English book PETER PAN.To be honest, it is the first original English novel I have read about and it's really a tough job, though the language of this novel is not so hard.Peter Pan is the boy who won’t grow up,with the spirit of youth and adventure. He enjoys flying about, fighting with captain Hook, being a hero and having fun.He travels from Never Land to London just to hear Wendy Darling tell stories about him and his adventures. While he may think highly of himself at times, even his enemy Captain Hook, knows that Pan’s not an ordinary boy.He can fly without wings and fight Hook just with a dagger. He’s also the leader of the Lost Boys, and allows no change in the ranks not even for his best girl, Tinker Bell the fairy. When she doesn’t listen to him, Peter banishes her forever.Because he doesn't quite know how long the “forever” is.Only after Wendy reminds him that forever is a long time, does he reduce it to a week.Either way, time makes little difference to him.Life is nothing but fun, all kinds of ideas and adventures when you never grow up.To some degree, PETER PAN reads like The Green' Fairy Tales.Peter, Wendy and other characters are similar to our young brothers and sisters. When Peter introduces his “children” to Wendy, he says “All look your best, first impression is awfully important!” It surprises me that a little boy who wont grow up should say such serious words! In chapter thirteen, evil Hook abducts Wendy, a girl he appreciates so much.He is determined to save her out.He swears “Hook or me this time.” Here, the author gives us a rich description, which really makes the scenes splendid!Especially the scene of Pan's sweet and peaceful sleep before he starts the dangerous save plan and the scene of his fierce fight against Hook.Reading this, I see a real man, having his own feelings and principles, stands in front of me, rather than a fictional one.“Hook or me this time” are the very words touch me deeply.Because it reflects Peter Pan's great courage and determination.Tough these words came out from a kid's mouth, it shocks adults. It reminds us that whatever difficult we may meet, if friends are in trouble, we can never run away!As a saying goes, a friend in need is a friend in deed!
A famous poet once described life in his poem like this: It's a long long journey.Till I know where I'm supposed to be.It's a long long journey, till I find the way home. Many days I've spent, wondering what is my purpose, wondering how to make myself strong.I know I will falter.I know I will cry.In the movie FORREST GUMP , Gump's wise mother always says “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get”.Both of the two kinds of imagery show the uncertainty of life.Of course, nobody will go over his or her lifetime totally propitious. In stead, we come across lots of accidents and it seems that, the more adversities we experience, the bigger possibility we succeed, like Chairman Mao,Edison and Columbus, etc.We can compare misfortunes in our life to the evil Captain Hook. When Captain Hook poisons Peter Pan to death, “His hands shook, but it was in exultation rather than in shame”.We must not give in when misfortunes stand before us;we must not give “evil Hook” the chance to be jaunty! All we need to do is just to give it a deathblow like a strong boxer alwaysdo to his adversary.Finishing reading PETER PAN, I'm lost in thought. Is there anybody who cares about the people and the environment around so much just like Pan and Wendy? Maybe you have heard about the horrible fire breaking out in our school not long ago.I was doing some washing when I suddenly heard someone shouted “Fire! There, the fire!” I ran back to dormitory as soon as possible and dialed 119.Something made me feel disappointed that only few students took it serious while the mostly were just watching, even laughing as if it was a Mr Bean's comedy. What if there were someone in the firing building, feeling totally horrible and thinking of his or her death time? Or in that windy night, what if the fire became bigger and bigger and out of control at the end ? They are adults with independent and mature thinking.Could not they think about these ?
Perhaps, it is what James Barrie(the author)really wants to say.He created Peter and Wendy and gived them the features of kids as well as that much precious character. At the same time, James created Pan's
enemy, the evil captain Hook, an adult despicable, foolish and selfish. We can see the comparison and the lampoon obviously.Perhaps, not only we students, but also the adults should read this meaningful and interesting masterpiece.

How to Really Start a Business(or Why You Don’t Need Money to Make Money)
Everyone has excuses about why they can’t(actually won’t)earn more money.A common excuse is, ―I need money to make money‖.
You and I know that’s a myth(you do know that’s a myth, right?), but most people take it as a truism.
A lot of people think they need tens of thousands of dollars to get in on a franchise, or put cash down for a rental property, or buy into some silly multilevel marketing scheme.
The fact is, there are plenty of ways to make money without the need for a pile of cash — as Chris Guillebeau’s recent book, The $100 Startup, covers. The first step is to realize that there are always multiple solutions to any problem, whether it’s making more money, building your retirement nest egg/strongbox, or bartering for broccoli.
Must-have tools for creating a business on the cheap are:
• A bootstrapping mindset: How can you get or do something for free or extremely low cost? Again, creative brainstorming and flexible thinking will help you figure out how to accomplish a task on a shoestring.Check out some more specific bootstrapping principles to get you started.• 步步为营:怎样才能白手起家呢? • Small steps and a willingness to experiment: This is the iterative, lean startup approach, where you try something small & fast, learn from it, and improve. What? You haven’t heard of the lean startup approach? Well, start reading up on it.It’ll save you from wasting time and money, and reduce startup frustration and misery.• 脚踏实地,勇于尝试:这一环节,创业者所要做的就是重复的精益创业。
• Market validation: Again, from the lean startup/customer development paradigm, make sure that you’re offering something that people want and will pay for. What what? You haven’t heard of customer development either? Not a problem. There’s great info out there to get you started.• 市场调研:同样地,从精益创业/发展客户范式入手,确保你所提供的产品是有需求的,客户是愿意付钱买的。
With all that said, you’ll also need to recognize your barriers to actually starting down the road of entrepreneurship. Here’s a list of the top 4 excuses people give for not making more money:
No time一无时间No money二无资金No expertise三无专业技能No ideas四无想法
When you reflect on why you haven’t started exploring how to earn more money, probably every one of your barriers(excuses!)falls into one of the above categories. You might say to yourself:
• ―Starting a business is too complicated.‖ Nope.That’s the ―no expertise‖ excuse.• ―
• ―But I work insane hours, have eleventeen kids, and a 4-hour commute.‖ Granted, you might have limitations on your time, but you’ll always make time for the things that are most important. And 20-30 minutes a day is something you can carve out–especially if it’ll change your life.• ―我每天要疯狂地工作,上下班就要花四个小时,还有群十几岁的孩子要看管。
• ―But I don’t have $10 grand to fund a business.‖ OK, go back to the top of the article and re-read it.Done? Some days it seems like everything is going wrong. On these days the world looks gray, bleak and barren.Other days, maybe everything is going right. But you’re still miserable. You don’t always have to understand why you’re in a bad mood in order to change it.These seven strategies can help.1.Get outside.Being in nature can help to lift your mood and even lull your nervous system. For instance, this 2010 studyfound that ―forest environments promote lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, greater parasympathetic nerve activity, and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments.‖
So when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, try visiting a park or body of water, suggests Darlene Mininni, Ph.D, MPH, author ofThe Emotional Toolkit.Or bring nature indoors by surrounding yourself with plants and flowers, getting a water fountain for your desk or getting a
fish tank.2.Listen to music.―Get out your absolute favorite grouchy, wallowy music and relish in tunes that match your mood for as long as it feels good, ‖ suggestsAshley Eder, LPC, a psychotherapist in Boulder, CO.Then when you start feeling better, adjust your music to fit your brighter feelings, she said. The opposite can also help.According to Mininni, if you’re upset, try listening to uplifting music. If you’re anxious or worried about something, try listening to soothing music, she said. This study found that listening to classical music for just 10 minutes minimized participants’ negative moods.Other research found that listening to music lowered blood pressure, heart rate and levels of the stress hormone cortisol.(This study found these effects in 54 nurses who listened to soothing music for 30 minutes.)
Combining calming tunes with slow breathing also might help.Thisresearch found that participants with high blood pressure who listened to 30 minutes of classic, Celtic or Indian music while performing breathing exercises had significantly lower blood pressure than those who didn’t.3.Embody your bad mood.―Ask your bad mood how it wants to move and honor its impulses in safe — but sometimes messy — ways like smashing eggs, breaking old dishes, ripping up paper, or punching pillows, ‖ Eder said.4.Tune into your murky mood.―Try getting quiet and asking the cranky part of yourself what it’s upset about, ‖ said Eder.In other words, instead of fighting with your feelings, figure out what you need.Let your mood be your messenger, she said.―Sometimes just honoring the impulse to have some alone-time, get more sleep, ask for help with something, or take space in a relationship is what you need to feel more at peace, ‖ Eder said.5.Assume control.People who feel like they have some control over their lives are happier than people who feel powerless, Mininni said.If there’s a particular situation that’s bothering you, identify the elements youcan control, she said. For instance, if your partner is sick, learn more about their condition, she said. But even the smallest things count.Sometimes the only thing you might be able to control is your wakeup time, and that’s important, too, she said.6.Engage in activities that honor your natural temperament. If you’re an introvert, Eder suggested carving out alone time.If you’re an extrovert, she suggested talking to a friend or being anywhere with people like a coffee shop.A bit of both? ―Schedule a time-limited activity with a person who consistently feels nourishing, followed by uninterrupted downtime, ‖ she said.7.Ride out your bad mood. Some days no matter the tactics you try, you still feel bad.If that’s the case, ―Acknowledge it, befriend it, and wait, ‖ Eder said.―Give yourself permission to make yourself comfortable, whether that means watching old episodes of Gossip Girl, playing Angry Birds, or by taking a nap, ‖ she said.Remember that ―It’s OK to have a bad day, and it’ll pass, ‖ Eder said.
