The Show After years of dominating the television ratings, and ruling Thursday nights, Friends began to feel some heat as the new millennium began from an upstart reality series called Survivor.Over the next few years(and for the remainder of Friends' run)these two shows would duke it out for supremacy on Thursdays.With Season Nine of Friends, now available on DVD, we see that the show had made some changes to engage in this battle, but the core of the series
remained intact.(SPOILER WARNING!: In order to describe Friends Season 9, I must divulge some of the plot-lines for the shows, as well as discuss events from Season 8.So, if you haven't seen Season 8 and want to be surprised by Season 9, read with caution.)At the conclusion of the eighth season of Friends, Rachel(Jennifer Ansiston)was about to go into the labor with the baby that she was having with Ross(David Schwimmer).However, Joey(Matt LeBlanc)had developed very strong feelings for Rachel, but he knew that it would be inappropriate for him to express them, as she was having someone else's baby--even though she and Ross weren't a couple.As Season 9 opens, Rachel has given birth to her baby girl, Emma, and all seems fine, until she thinks that both Ross and Joey have proposed to her!Meanwhile, the birth of Rachel's baby solidifies the fact that Monica(Courtney Cox)and Chandler(Matthew Perry)want children, and they begin trying, only to have those plans dashed when Chandler is forced to work in Oklahoma
four days a week.As the season progresses, several story arcs unfold.Ross and Rachel live together in order to raise Emma, but neither is sure exactly where their relationship is going.Through an awkward blind date, Phoebe(Lisa Kudrow)meets Mike(Paul Rudd)and she embarks on her first serious relationship.As Chandler attempts to adjust to his new work situation, he realizes that his happiness and Monica are more important than his job and he makes a drastic career move.And Joey...well, Joey is just along for the ride for most of Season 9, until he is forced to face his feelings for Rachel again.The season concludes with a trip to Barbados where these situations will comes to a head.The Friends: The Complete Ninth Season DVD set contains the following episodes:

Friends has always been a quality show, so Season 9 is certainly good, but it isn't great.The season features all of the requisite components that make up a season of Friends.As I've mentioned in past reviews, the test of quality for Friends is the Thanksgiving episode and the one in Season 9 is pretty good, as Christina Applegate guest stars as Rachel's snotty and oblivious sister.We also have the inevitable guest stars, including Freddie Prinze, Jr.(who is great as the male nanny), John Stamos, Selma Blair, and Jeff Goldblum.And of course, there's an appearance by Chandler's ex, Janice(Maggie Wheeler), but they make us wait a long time for this.And while all of those components are in place, and there are some very, very funny moments in the episodes, Season 9 really lacks heart.Relying once again on a Ross and Rachel “Will they/Won't they?” scenario feels very lazy and long-time viewers may have trouble caring what happens with this couple.Similar devoid of feeling is the situation with Monica and Chandler.The scenario with Chandler's job and their attempts at having a baby are very detached and have no immediacy.It is nice to see Phoebe have a strong storyline again and Paul Rudd is a good as her boyfriend Mike.These observations aside, Season 9 of Friends continues to prove that the series was one of the best at maintaining story arcs, yet having episodes with individual storylines.So, although the overall stories aren't very intriguing, there are still some great moments here.And the fact that many episodes are “Super-Sized”(they ran several minutes longer than usual to discourage viewers from switching to Survivor)means that we get even more jokes.Friends may have been past its prime by Season 9, but this high-quality show never fails to entertain.Video The Friends: The Complete Ninth Season DVD boxed set comes from Warner Home Video.The set contains all 23 episodes from Season 9, spread across four discs.The shows are presented in their original 4:3 aspect ratio.The images here look very good, as the picture is sharp and clear, showing only a slight amount of grain and no defects from the source material.The colors are very good, as the show has a noticeably creative palette, and the blacks are deep and true.There is some noticeable artifacting at times, but the image lacks the blurred look which has haunted some seasons of the show.Overall, this transfer rivals digital broadcast quality.Audio As with past seasons, this DVD set features a Dolby Digital 5.0 audio mix.This provides clear dialogue with no distortion or any other obvious flaws.The dialogue emanates from the center channel, with occasional sound effects coming from the front channels.Music cues and the live-audience laughter fills the surround speakers.The audio isn't breathtaking by any means, but it works for this show.Extras The Friends: The Complete Ninth Season DVD offers the typical line-up of lackluster extras, the exception being the audio commentaries from series Executive Proucers/Creators Kevin S.Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane.On this set, they provide commentary for: “The One with the Male Nanny”(Disc One), “The One with Rachel's Other Sister”(Disc Two), and “The One in Barbados”(Disc Four).As usual, these tracks are very fun and informative, especially when the trio discusses the guest stars involved in the episodes(Freddie Prine, Jr., Christina Applegate，and Aisha Tyler, respectively.)
The remainder of the extras can be found on Disc Four.“Behind the Style: The Look of Friends”(20 minutes)examines the clothes and hair fashions presented on the show and offers interviews with costume designer Debra McGuire, and hair stylists Chris McMillan and Jonathan Hanouser.The segment also takes a brief look at Monica's fat-suit.“Phoebe Battles the Pink Robots” is a music video from The Flaming Lips which contains footage from the show.“Gunther Spills the Beans”(3 minutes)is the typically pointless look Season 10 featuring actor James Michael Tyler.(I guess there won't be one of these on the Season 10 set.)The extras are rounded out by a 7-minute “Gag Reel” and a set-top game entitled “Who's Your Best Friend?”
As Friends went up against Survivor: Thailand and Survivor: The Amazon in its ninth season, the show didn't pull any gimmicks(save for the “Super-Size” thing).Instead it relied on the solid writing and good acting which had carried it for so many years.While some of the story lines may seem tired, the episodes are good, but can't touch the quality of
the show's earlier years.Review two:

At its best, the situation comedy “Friends” captures the Zeitgeist of the 1990s with startling accuracy.That it is funny without resorting to cruel ironies only solidifies the cheery, optimistic outlook of the show‟s creators.Sure, some of its sarcastic jokes hit a little close to home, but the characters seem to care genuinely for one another and about being good people(unlike the tools in “Seinfeld”).Warner Bros.‟s first “Friends” DVDs consisted of “Best of „Friends‟” collections.Those releases were a hodge-podge of episodes from various seasons.Thankfully, the studio has come to its senses and is now releasing “Friends” season by season.“Friends”: The Complete Ninth Season Box Set includes twenty-three episodes on four DVDs.Each episode contains footage not seen during its original broadcast.Mostly, these are mere seconds that were cut here and there in order to fit in a couple of extra commercials on the air.Disc 1: “The One Where No One Proposes”, “The One Where Emma Cries”, “...the Pediatrician”, “...the Sharks”, “...Phoebe‟s Birthday Dinner”, “...the Male Nanny”.Disc 2: “...Ross‟s Inappropriate Song”, “...Rachel‟s Other Sister”, “...Rachel‟s Phone Number”, “...Christmas in Tulsa”, “The One Where Rachel Goes Back to Work”, “...Phoebe‟s Rats”.Disc 3: “The One Where Monica Sings”, “...the Blind Dates”, “...the Mugging”, “...the Boob Job”, “...the Memorial
Service”, “...the Lottery”.Disc 4: “...Rachel‟s Dream”, “...the Soap Opera Party”, “...the Fertility Test”, “...the Donor”, “The One in Barbados”.During the show‟s run, Jennifer Aniston(Rachel), Courteney Cox Arquette(Monica), Lisa Kudrow(Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc(Joey), Matthew Perry(Chandler), and David Schwimmer(Ross)have become highly-paid stars.Their chemistry makes the show, for they simply look like people who wouldn‟t mind hanging out with one another 24/7.I also like how the show reaches back into the characters‟ pasts to provide a sense of where the six friends will be in the future.That respect for how the sextet came to be gives the characters a solid base for their growth as
fully-realized personas.Season Eight ended with Rachel thinking that Joey proposed to her.Therefore, Season Nine begins with the six friends dealing with the aftermath of Rachel‟s mis-assumption.In all the confusion, Rachel decides that getting back together with Ross isn‟t what she wants in life.This leads to several musical-beds moments, culminating in a trip to Barbados that has Ross falling in love with a beautiful fellow paleontologist(played by Aisha Tyler)and with Joey damning the torpedoes and kissing Rachel after all.Meanwhile, Phoebe has her own love triangle after actor Hank Azaria returns as the off-kilter scientist who was the love of her life before she met Mike(Paul Rudd), a blind date introduced by Joey out of the blue since he(Joey)forgot to look for a real blind date for a double date with Phoebe and one of her friends.(I know, this can be really confusing sometimes.)
For me, the funniest gag was Chandler being sent to Tulsa after falling asleep during a meeting and inadvertently agreeing to a temporary transfer.This leads to several funny set-ups such as Monica thinking that her husband watches “shark porn”.However, this bit gets dropped after a while--which is disappointing since it‟s always refreshing to see the cast interact extensively with other people.I really enjoy the performances by the cast members, but I also detest Lisa Kudrow(Phoebe).I like wacky stuff that humanizes a fictional creation, but Kudrow‟s character is wacky for the sake of being wacky.The other five characters often act with chagrin when they realize that they‟ve done something silly, but Phoebe is so oblivious to reality that she elicits groans rather than laughs from me.Video:
The ninth season of “Friends” arrives on DVD with a 1.33:1(full-frame on 4:3 monitors)video image.The video quality is still not as great as, say, the quality of the video of the “Star Trek: Voyager” DVDs.Most episodes are rather soft, and that softness can lead to the occasional blurring.Sometimes, the footage sports a digital sheen rather than appearing film-like, possibly due to overzealous edge-enhancement.However, colors and lighting schemes have
been reproduced well.Audio:
Warner Bros.re-mixed the show‟s soundtracks into Dolby Digital 5.0 English presentations.Since “Friends” is a sitcom, there‟s not much that requires the use of dazzling sonic effects.Therefore, while the 5.0 mixes help to “widen” the depth of the soundstage, there‟s nothing on these DVDs that will compel you to pop them into your DVD player to impress your friends.Dialogue and music are well-balanced.Low-end frequencies are scarce, but they‟re not necessarily suitable for something like “Friends” anyway.Optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles as well as English closed captions support the audio.Extras:
Like the Season Eight box set, this one is rather light on extras, too.Disc 1: Audio commentary by executive producers Kevin S.Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane for “...the Male
Nanny”.Disc 2: Audio commentary by Bright, Kauffman, and Crane for “...Rachel‟s Other Sister”.Disc 4: Audio commentary by Bright, Kauffman, and Crane for “The One in Barbados”.The other “big” extras are also found on Disc 4.There‟s the “Behind the Style: The Look of „Friends‟” featurette about make-up/costumes/sets, a gag reel, a music video with Phoebe‟s music, and a “Who‟s Your Best Friend” trivia game.There‟s also “Gunther Spills the Beans”, a featurette that has the Gunther character giving away some of the plot developments of Year Ten(it‟s actually a promo for the next box set).--Miscellaneous--
On each disc, the menu screen that allows you to pick an episode to watch also has “coffee cup” icons in front of each episode‟s name.These icons access previews of the episodes.Each disc also has a list of the show‟s leads as well as executive producers.There are some weblinks if you use a DVD-ROM drive to view the discs.The cardboard gatefold packaging provides information about the episodes‟ writers, directors, original airdates, and
guest stars.Film Value:
At the time that Season Nine was in production, no one was sure if the cast would be willing to return for a tenth season.Therefore, Season Nine starts on the road towards giving the characters closure.Still, despite the profusion of serious moments, Season Nine had plenty of laughs.I‟m really glad that I stayed the course and watched this
much “Friends” on DVD.

Friends season 1 introduces the six main characters: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing and Ross Geller.Rachel, who left her fiance at the altar on her wedding day, has come to New York and ends up living with Monica.It establishes early on in the season that Ross has been infatuated with Rachel since the two characters attended high school.Several episodes revolve around his attempts to tell her how he feels.Meanwhile, Ross's estranged lesbian wife Carol is pregnant with his baby.This puts him and Carol's lesbian life partner, Susan, in an awkward position.When the baby is born at the end of the season, Ross, Carol, and Susan agree to name him Ben: after a name tag on a 济南婚纱摄影janitor's uniform worn by Phoebe.The episodic nature of the season sees the other characters having multiple dates, many of which go wrong(Monica dates a minor in one episode).The recurring character of Janice is introduced as a girlfriend Chandler breaks up with in an early episode but frequently returns to through the ensuing ten seasons.Ross leaves for a fossil dig in China at the end of the season, but when Chandler lets it slip about Ross's continuing济南婚纱摄影 feelings for Rachel on her birthday, she is shocked to find out.She rushes off to the airport to tell him about her feelings, only to find out that he has a new girlfriend.Friends is one of the most broadcast shows ever so it's probable that most people have caught an episode of it at some time or another.There are certain storylines which are most prominent through each of the 10 seasons of Friends and this first season focuses mainly on Ross and his coming to terms with his ex-wife Carol's lesbanism and济南婚纱摄影 her pregnancy with his child and him falling in love with Rachel.It also focuses on Rachel coming to terms with her new life in the city after jilting her fiance Barry at the altar and becoming independent without her father's money for the first time in her life.All this is accompanied by hilarious moments that can be watched time and time again without the chance of ever becoming tired of them.———————————————————————————————— 0713 风飞
