The Book Report of Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is a very famous novel which is written by the British writer----Emily Bronte, who is one of the most remarkable novelists of the 19th in English literature. The whole book is full of strong spirit of the struggle against oppression, the struggle for happiness, and always hangs over the strange, nervous romantic atmosphere. When Wuthering Heights was firstly published, it was seen as the young woman writer’s naive fantasy divorcing from the reality. But as time went on, based on the description of social phenomenon of British and the fierce class struggle, it soon achieved highly affirmation of the critics, and was warmly welcomed by the public.Wuthering Heights, containing plentiful emotions, sublime love and a variety of world viewpoints as well as life philosophy, is regarded as the strangest novel in the history of English literature. The novel Wuthering Heights is full of love and hatred which are both conflicted and combined. The impressive, relentless and vigorous love arouses implacable emotions in depth of the reader’s heart with its ultimate passion, infatuation and great miseries. The hatred from the deepest bottom of the heart, which has brought so many pains, shocks the reader’s brain.Wuthering Heights, through a tragic love story, shows a picture of life in an abnormal society, and outlines humanity distorted by this terrible abnormal society and resulting horrible events. The whole story is actually spread gradually through four stages. The first stage describes the happy childhood of Heathcliff and Catherine;Special feelings are formed in the special environment between an orphan and a young lady, and they give Sindre the bossy tyranny. The second stage emphatically describes that Catherine betrays Heathcliff because of her vanity, ignorant and fatuity and then become the hostess of Thrushcross grange. The third stage has an emphasis on depicting how Heathcliff turns hatred and despair into the strategy and action of revenge. The final stage just tells the Heathcliff's death. However, it reveals that when Heathcliff knows that Harry and Katie are in love, he experiences a new change in thought----the recovery of human nature, which adds a bunch of reassuring light of hope to this horrific love tragedy. Therefore, Heathcliff’s love to hate to revenge to the recovery of human nature, is not only the essence of the novel, but also a main line throughout the whole novel, from the beginning to the end.According to this sequence of changes, the author arranges to change the scenes unpredictably, sometimes in overcast, wail like ghosts and howl like wolves’ wilderness, and sometimes in stormy, gloomy miserable dark garden, so that the whole story has been shrouded in a mysterious and terrible atmosphere. In this novel, the author puts all efforts to concentrate on depicting the image of Heathcliff where she places all her sympathy, indignation and ideal. The orphan who is deprived of the warmth cultivates strong love and hate in real life.Sindre’s bossy tyranny makes him undergo the cruelty of life, and it also teaches him to understand that swallow insult and humiliation silently yield cannot alter their destiny. He chooses the revolt.Catherine was ever his faithful partner, and they had a sincere love in the common revolt. However, Catherine finally betrayed him and married Edgar Layton who she didn’t know and love. The direct cause of the love tragedy is her vanity, ignorant and stupid. The result not only ruins her own youth, love and life, but also destroys Heathcliff who is always passionately devoted to her, still brings about a little hurt to the next generation. When Emily Bronte portrays this character, her mood is very complex: she has the sympathy and the indignation;she has the regret and the whip;she has the mourning and the misfortune.Catherine's betrayal and sorrow destiny after marriage is the most significant turning point of the novel. It turns Heathcliff’s immense love into profound hate. After Catherine's death, his cavity hatred bursts out, and turns into the crazy revenge power. This crazy revenge of spite, seemingly contradictory to common sense, but most incisively expresses his unusual rebellious spirit, this is a special resistance determined by a special environment and special character.Heathcliff's love tragedy is the tragedy of the society, and the tragedy of the times. The end of the novel is that Heathcliff committed suicide. His death is a die for their love, and expresses his undying love for Catherine. Before he died, he gave up the revenge of the next generation. This reflects that he actually has a good nature, but the cruel reality makes him lose his nature. The recovery of humanity is a spiritual sublimation and reflects the humanitarian ideals. This novel also reflects what kind of social background the author suffered. In the eyes of modern people, romanticism can never exist alone without the subject of love. The love between Heathcliff and Catherine is hearty and despairing, as both of them attach great importance to their affectionate liberation and freedom.Especially to Heathcliff, his identity of adopted son and Gypsies makes him suffer lots of attack from his living environment during his growth, which gives birth to his extremely strong self-protecting and revenging consciousness. To take it good, he has a clear cut stand on what to love and what to hate;to take it bad, he has a spilt personality.Heathcliff is a typical person in which self emotion and freedom can break through everything. To him, whatever things that betray or depress him is worthy of being cursed and hated. As a result, it is destined that Heathcliff and Catherine must suffer from their fruitless love enduringly. From Emily Bronte, we can see the shadow of Catherine who is brave, strong willed and more important, rebellious.Although Catherine was born in a noble family, yet she falls in love with Heathcliff without any fear.Heathcliff is a waif picked up by Mr.Earnshaw.He is a dark-skinned gipsy, “as dark almost as if came from the devil’’.He is not welcome in Wuthering Heights even the maid Helly hates him.But Catherine shows happiness and sympathy with him and they played innocently together. She loves Heathcliff heartily, to her, Heathcliff is innermost herself. From my point of view, Catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Lintons, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar.Catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who love her.The location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life. She is buried in a corner of the Kirkyard. In contrast to Catherine, Isabella Linton—Catherine’s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness.Ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a mere tool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family. The weak side of their characters brings about the tragedy destiny. At Victorian times, marriage is well-matched in social and economic status.Catherine cannot get rid of the old traditional trammels, though she loves Heathcliff deeply. She is seduced by the refined and tranquil Thrushcross Grange. Her visit to the Grange preludes the tragedy of their love.Looking through the window of the Grange, Catherine sees a world completely different from the bleak and deckling Heights. It is an attractive place, possessing everything that Heathcliff doesn’t have social position, wealth and comfortable life. She decides to marry Edgar Linton, because she wants to be the greatest woman of the neighborhood. In fact, choosing Edgar, she is deliberately false to her own world, just as what Heathcliff comments: an oak is planted in a flowerpot. So when Heathcliff returns, she is eager to feel the value of her existence in him.She tries to reconcile her feeling with what Linton represents, but the two sides can’t be reconciled at all.She can’t bear such suffering, falls in ill and never recovers.Catherine dies at the birth of her daughter Cathy and Emily Bronte, the creator of Catherine, dies at the age of thirty. As we know, Emily Bronte lived in the early 19th century, that is, the unrest beginning period of the Victorian age. With the Industrial Revolution exerting its influence on the whole British society, capitalism enjoyed rapid development while exposing more and more its defects: severe confrontation between capitalists and workers;high unemployment rate;the widening gap between the rich and poor.Under these circumstances, various social evils began to develop and spread. The author also finished her famous work Wuthering Heights under such background. In this novel, we can see that the author criticized a series of social evils through her description of plot. For example, in this novel, Heathcliff had suffered discrimination and persecution since he was young. What contributes to this situation is just that Heathcliff is an orphan who comes from lower class.Heathcliff also represents many Gypsies who lived in hardship of that time.In the novel, Heathcliff and Cathy were innocent playmates;they developed their love since they were young. But as they grew up, Cathy gradually realized the immense disparities of their social status and their love was unacceptable to the society of that time.Strict hierarchy accounted for their separation. So the author here criticized not only racial discrimination bur also hierarchy. In a word, the society of that time was money-oriented and full of hypocrisy.Under such circumstances, it is hard to keep the purity of human’s nature.Emily Bronte, as a traditional British lady following conservative morals standard, uses a unique and keen sense of perspective to reveal the human nature, to discuss the human nature, to understand the human nature, which makes me feel surprised. In her works, love and hate are the most essential, most free states to be released and extended. She helps us to see the most beautiful side, at the same time, the ugliest side of human nature, to discover good and evil in the heart that no one can escape. The charm of the novel comes from its deep beauty and tragedy, from the pursuit to human power in spiritual world, from the unique natural wilderness, from the free, restless vigor that is undisciplined like the wind on the wild places in Yorkshire. In Wuthering Heights, despite that Heathcliff and Catherine’s nature was distorted when they are alive, but after the two people died, the flesh back to dirt, their soul roaming the wilderness, man and nature reached an eternal unity. The dead, alive, the everlasting love will never fade away. The writer’s emotional depth and rich have massive inner passion, and she uses the transcendental love to frame a cruel beauty, making the whole piece of work take on a romantic atmosphere as bearing a cross. After the storm, there will be cool and calm with sunshine;after the shock, there will be the deep thinking and imagination of it is worth cherishing. After reading Wuthering Heights, I only hope that after the end of their love and hate, Heathcliff and Catherine can achieve the eternal tranquility.18110609李倩

A Report on Wuthering Heights

In Wuthering Heights(John Murray edition,1910), Emily Bronte tells the story of love and revenge.Wuthering Heights is written by the time span of thirty years, describes a complex emotional relationships of two generations between the Earnshaw family and Linton family.Heathcliff was a poor gipsy orphan who was deserted on a dirty street. The old kind Mr.Earnshaw took him back and brought him up.Mr.Earnshaw had a beautiful daughter, Catherine Earnshaw, and a son, Hindley. After Heathcliff’s coming to the family, Catherine became his good friend while Hindley always looked down upon the black-haired boy, treated him badly, and tired his best to make him a poor dull farm worker.Because of Heathcliff’s lowly status, he couldn’t offer a comfortable life to Catherine and at last she married Edgar.Linton, a rich young man living in Thrushcross Grange. The whole novel can be divided into four parts. The first phase describes the daily life of Heathcliff and Catherine’s childhood, their special affection is formed in this particular environment as well as their revolt against the tyrannical Hindley. The second phase focuses on the Catherine pursuit of the traditional of human love and betrayed Heathcliff and she became the mistress of thrush. She admitted to Donnelly that her love to Linton who is young, handsome man.He loves her as well as her wealth, let her to become the most distinguished woman.Catherine has said:”In my heart and soul, I clearly know I was wrong.” Because she also loves Heathcliff. The third phase uses a large pen and ink describing Heathcliff’s revenge. The last part of novel is the death of Heathcliff but revealed a new change in the thinking experience-the recovery of humanity when he understood the love between Hareton and Catherine, so we can see a bunch a hope in the tragic love story. My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods;time will change it.I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath a source of little visible delight, but necessary.Nell, I am Heathcliff! He's always always in my mind;not as a pleasure, any ore than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.Love ,when it was passionate, it was sun, rain and sugar;but when itwasn’t passionate, it became a sharp arrow, the deeper you loved, the worse scar you would had.As for a person who had already got hurt badly, love can be a dealcohol agent, which can worn him to be cautious before fall in love again. However, even though it can not be able to prevent the coming of love, until it break all the fantasy of love into pieces one more time.I don’t know exactly how many people died for love, but I believe that most of them had decided to keep alive eventually. They continued to be living, til the time smooth the painful memory.Once think about that one day, all of us well be vanished in the memory of the person who we loved before. What a terrible thing!

I cannot express it;but surely you and everybody have a notion that there is or should be an existence of yours beyond you. What were the use of my creation, if I were entirely contained

here? My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning:my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be;and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary.Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being. So don't talk of our separation again. As long as you keep alive, you have to deal with all kinds of things, until these confused things fall the first memory into oblivion, make the life return to the peaceful status, and make you hope for nothing. In my idea, if a person can live by memory and revenge like Heathcliff , we can really count it as a life of luxury. At present, I am listening the song named Where Did You Sleep Last Night, I descend into the dark and hysterical. It remind me of Heathcliff who looks like a grim people but has the most passionate love inside.Maybe, I love his arbitrary, his unreasonable, especially his hysterical, stubborn.Once you love someone, you become extraordinarily stubborn, be so possessive of her, even be a mass of bruises, you still never let go.The stronger to surface, the weaker to inside.I want to hug the grim Heathcliff, have you ever saw the tears slipped along his face in the hopeless darkness. If during my lifetime, I have the opportunity to have a love like this, I think I will not try to deny.Compare Jane Eyre with Wuthering Heights, I didn’t find any differences on the expression of love.If there is a difference, I think Wuthering Heignts voices that I love more, hate more, and more painful. This kind of love has reached to their limitation,it will bring no more than crazy and devastation. For two people who love each other with great passion, We,Human,You,Outside can be nothing, because they are the Universe for each other.Emily Bronte merely lived thirty years, I don’t know her experience. But I think she was burned by the passion and despair, and maybe this is a happy thing for her.

Wuthering Heights ——Revenge

Well, before I begin my part, I would like to ask you a question that is if you hate a person a lot, what will you do? Keep silence? Talk about your feelings with the person immediately and try to solve the problem? Or hurt the person to express your anger? Or deal with it in other ways? Who can give me you’re an answer? Now let’s come back to our novel. What did the hero, Heathcliff do when he had extreme hatred? He chose to revenge. Then in the following part, I’ll begin with the revenge in Wuthering Heights.Later on, I’d like to talk about some other related things about revenge.First, let’s see the revenge in the novel. We know that Heathcliff lives in an abnormal way.People around despised this ‘evil gypsy’.When his beloved Catherine married the gentleman, Edger Linton, for wealth and reputation, Heathcliff’s heart broke completely. His hatred towards Hindley and the Lintons became stronger. When Catherine died, Heathcliff was like an active volcano, boom!

Heathcliff had a careful plan to revenge. In his generation, I’d like to mainly say something about his marriage with Isabella. This action is the key step to take over the property of the Lintons.and vexed Edger mentally.Just as Isabella’s angry words ‘Whatever he may pretend, he wishes to provoke Edger to desperation;he says he has married me on purpose to obtain power over him…’Also, we can consider it his revenge to Catherine. He knew Catherine’s deep love towards him.He knew his marriage would hurt Catherine in the same way that she hurt him.The joy of revenge and the sorrow of love mixed together to become a very complicated feeling.Indeed, Heathcliff is such a complicated character. It’s not difficult to imagine his fierce inter struggles.Meanwhile, Heathcliff abused his wife, Isabella, as a sort of amusement. As he himself pointed out, his abuse of Isabella is purely sadistic, as he amuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still come cringing back for more.According to a modern study, a lot of criminals were lack of love. They get apathy even hatred from the society. If the seeds of enmity are planted in people’s hearts when they were kids, how can we expect these people to be friendly and kind? What goes around comes around.H is a typical character. When hatred gets its foothold in his soul, his choice is revenge. When we are shocked by H’s violence, we can feel a little bit sadness, too.Although maybe we can consider Hindley Earshaw and the Lintos Heathcliff’s enemy, it’s none of their children’s business, right? We always say that the children are innocent. But Heathcliff could not stop the mad beast called revenge from extending its reach to the next generation.‘…I want the triumph of seeing…my child hiring their children to till their father’s land for wages.’ What a terrible and poor man!Because his own life is miserable, he wanted to let the next generation suffer from what he has suffered. He used to say to the five years old boy, Hindley’s son, Hareton: ‘Now, my bonny lad, you are mine! And we’ll see if one tree won’t grow as crooked as another, with the same wind to twist it!’ It’s the sort of thing that can be done by the demon.Heathcliff did make the boy as his own duplicate and ruined the boy. Will you be as lowly as a maid or a servant in you own house? It sounds quite ridiculous!1

But in a matter of fact, Hareton did so.Thanks to Mr.Heathcliff, he gave Hareton the very precious chance to experience such an unusual life.As we known, loving our own children is human’s nature. But it is not right for Heathcliff.Hatred blinded his eyes.In order to revenge, he could make use of his own son and watched him die in the end.As for Catherine Linton, the creature became a poor widow. She and Heraton loved each other but couldn’t get together because they were under devil Heathcliff’s control.Heathcliff abandoned everything and used all kinds of ways to reach his destination—revenge.Back to back tragedies were made, tragedies of the Earshaws, the Lintons and himself. Now classmates, we can come out of Wuthering Heights for a moment.Next, I’ll tell you a mythology.Once upon a time, there was a charming princess called Medea. She owned the power of magic. Her peaceful life would go on if Jason, one of the Greece heroes, had not appeared.Jason came there to get the Golden Fleece(the wool from a golden sheep), the symbol of a priceless treasure.Medea fell in love with him.She helped Jason get the Golden Fleece and betrayed her father and her own country and ran away with Jason. In order to get rid of the chase, Medea killed her brother and cut his body into pieces. After Medea and Jason settled down, Medea gave birth to two sons. But it’s not the happy ending. The king of the country wanted Jason to marry his daughter. Then Jason abandoned Medea who loved him and helped him a lot.He married the princess because of the wealth and the power.Medea was extremely sad and angry. She gave the princess a beautiful dress which contained poison. With out knowing the truth, the bride put it on.Obviously, the bride died. The king cried and held his dear daughter tightly in his arms.He also died because he touched the poison. But to Medea, it was far from enough. She killed her own sons in front of Jason.Though the father pleaded to kiss his sons’ bodies for the last time, Medea refused him coldly. She flew away with her dead sons and her broken heart.Jason was left alone. He had lost everything. Finally, he ended his life with the sword. Thus, Medea became the goddess of revenge. After finishing the story, we can find that Heathcliff and Medea have a lot in common. Both of them had strong love and hatred. The most important thing is when they were treated by unfair things and betrayed by lovers, they chose to revenge: Heathcliff took steps to get all the property of the two families;Medea killed all the related people to pay back to Jason. To some extent, the revenge showed their rebellious spirit.Heathcliff and Medea didn’t comply with the unfair fate. They changed from victims to avengers. When we are shocked by the avengers, we feel pity at the same time. However, there is difference between Medea and Heathcliff. What’s the difference then? One is woman and the other is man? Of course not.The real difference is: it’s a total tragedy that Medea destroyed everything including herself;as for Heathcliff, although he lived most of his life with hatred and revenge, he gave up his revenge to the next generation, Heraton and Catherine. It’s a kind of revival of humanity.A moment later, my partner, Cathy, will analyze the revival of humanity to you.Today we talked much about the revenge, and I do hope the more we know the revenge, the more we value the harmony and the peace.Thank you!
