Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilisation.By Stephen Cave.Crown;320 pages;$25.Biteback Publishing;£20.Buy from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk

IMMORTALITY is an age-old obsession.Plenty of literature deals with the subject, from the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamish to the poems of Homer and the writings of the Old Testament. The quest to live for ever has motivated medieval alchemists, modern techno-Utopians and mystics through the centuries。

In his survey of the subject, Stephen Cave, a British philosopher, argues that man’s various tales of immortality can be boiled down into four basic “narratives”.The first is the simplest, in theory at least: do what the medieval alchemists never managed and discover an elixir to simply avoid dying. The second concerns resurrection, or coming back to life after dying, a belief found in all three of the Abrahamic religions. The idea of an immaterial soul that can persist through death dates back, in a formal form, at least to Plato, and forms Mr Cave’s third narrative. His fourth narrative deals with immortality through achievement, by becoming so famous that one’s name lives on through the ages。

For the aspiring undying, Mr Cave unfortunately concludes that immortality is a mirage. But his demolition project is fascinating in its own right. The section on the soul is an able attack on the related doctrines of “vitalism”,the soul and mind-body dualism—the intuitive and still widely held body of ideas that hold that living creatures are animated by some sort of supernatural spark, and that an individual’s personality or consciousness can survive death. The chapters on resurrection will interest Christians, as Mr Cave examines how the literal recreation, by God, of dead people’s bodies remains the doctrine of most branches of Christianity. The idea of one’s soul, as opposed to one’s body, ending up in heaven or hell is a subsequent embellishment。

If anything, readers might want more of Mr Cave’s crisp conversational prose. There could be more on living longer;Mr Cave barely has time to give even the briefest overview of the emerging science of life extension, which has allowed researchers to lengthen the lifespans of mice by a third or more in the lab。

There are a few quibbles.Mr Cave’s repeated claim that the quest for immortality drives every human activity feels overdone.Others might dispute his definition of immortality itself.Mr Cave’s chief argument against the desirability of living for ever(even assuming it is possible)is the familiar one of boredom. As the uncountable billions of years tick away, the argument runs, even the most vivacious will come to realise that they have done everything there is to do, hundreds of times. With yet more billions of years looming ahead they will be struck down with a debilitating ennui。

That argument only applies if these notional immortals are also invincible, and therefore impervious to accident. But that is an odd definition, and not one that crops up very often, especially in scientific research into ageing. The holy grail there is simply to arrest the ageing process.Indeed, Mr Cave quotes an actuary who has estimated that the average “medical immortal” would persist for around 6,000 years before dying in a plane accident or a car crash or the like. And besides, boredom seems to be a non-problem: after all, if an immortal does ever get truly bored of his vastly extended life, there would be nothing to prevent him from ending it。

A lesson of life

“everything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever I faced disappointment.“If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”

Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer.I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time.

In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-“Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance,”she said.

I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department.Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.But I wasn't hired.

My disappointment must have shown.”Everything happens for the best,“ Mom reminded me.Dad offered me the car to job hunt.I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, my frustration boiled over.I asked a1oud,”How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?“

I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?”Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.

On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: “if you carry on, one day something good will happen.Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment” I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

Abundance is a life style, a way of living your life.It isn’t something you buy now and then or pull down from the cupboard, dust off and use once or twice, and then return to the cupboard.

Abundance is a philosophy;it appears in your physiology, your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it, sleep with it, bath with it, feel with it, and need to maintain and take care of it as well.

Abundance doesn’t always require money. Many people live with all that money can buy yet live empty inside.Abundance begins inside with some main self-ingredients, like love, care, kindness and gentleness, thoughtfulness and compassion.Abundance is a state of being. It radiates outward. It shines like the sun among the many moons in the world.

Being from the brightness of abundance doesn’t allow the darkness to appear or be in the path unless a choice to allow it to.The true state of abundance doesn’t have room for lies or games normally played. The space is too full of abundance. This may be a challenge because we still need to shine for other to see.

Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be.Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack.

Start by knowing what your abundances are, fill that space with you, and be fully present from that state of being.Your profession of choice is telling you of knowing and possibilities. That is their gift.Consultants and customer service professionals have the ministrative assistants and virtual assistants have an abundance of coordination and time management.Abundance is all around you, and all within.See what it is;love yourself for what it is, not what you’re missing, or what that can be better, but for what it is at this present moment.

Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need will appear whenever you need it.That’s just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work.Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to.Just by being from a state of abundance, it is being you.

Eagle in a Storm

Eagle in a Storm

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks?

The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.

The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.

When the storms of life come upon us—and all of us will experience them—we can rise above them by setting our belief that we can make it.The storms do not have to overcome us.We can allow our inner power to lift us above them.

We can enable ourselves to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the storm.

Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.

say, you can not change the environment, but can change their own;you can not change the facts, but can change attitudes;you can not change the past, but can be changed now;you can not control other people, but can be masters of our own;you can not do everything well, but can be conscientious in everything;you can not about the weather, but you can change the mood;you can not choose looks, but it can show a smile.Indeed, one key to the success lies in his(her)mind. The difference between successful people and the losers are: winners will be setbacks and difficulties due to personal ability, experience, imperfect, to emphasize the inherent, they are willing to continuously improve and develop the right direction;and the losers will blame on the opportunity, and the environment injustice, emphasizing external and uncontrollable factors that created the position of their life, they always complain, wait and give up!

In many cases, is a humble person who is looked down upon his own.Person's appearance, his family, and so a priori condition that can not be changed, but at least inner state, the spirit of the will is entirely their own control.Mentality, the final decision of life high. There is no absolute bad thing, only the mentality of the absolute poor people. If even the state of mind will not adjust, how they deal with things more complicated than the mentality of it!

No matter what the situation, a person's attitude is very important.Passion put to work, and numbness sluggish to work completely different.Emerson said: “A move toward their goals is always people who gave him the whole world to give way.” On the contrary, failure is not because we do not have the strength, but because we are susceptible to all around us, used to go along with the lack of assertive, attitude unstable, easily frustrated reason. As long as we believe that the strength of mind, change their attitude and courage to face a number of disappointments in life, do not despair, brave go on.I believe the power of mind, mind you're in the height of the final decision
