Brief Statements Based on This Unit The analysis of the teaching contents
This unit is concerned with successful women,which is a sister unit to “Nelson Mandela—a Modern Hero(Unit 5,Module 1)”.It introduces to the students six women who have played an important role in different times and in different countries,focusing on Jane Goodall,a British lady devoting herself to studying and protecting chimps in African forests,and Lin Qiaozhi,a Chinese specialist in women’s diseases.According to their stories,all of them devoted themselves to their chosen careers and stuck to their ideas.To achieve their ambitions,they had to overcome various and different problems.At times they had to give up things that most people take for granted.For example,Jane Goodall gave up the opportunity of entering university while Lin Qiaozhi remained single all her life.This is to explain the criteria of judging a great woman and what to learn from them and to enable the students to follow their examples to perfect themselves.WARMING UP
This section provides some brief introduction to the six great women in history both at home and abroad.The students are required to get as much information as possible about the women and discuss what they did,what problems they had to overcome and what they had to give up to fulfill their ambitions in class.After the discussion,they should come to a conclusion about the criteria of judging a great woman,which can help them to form the right outlook on life and set in proper and equal judgment on others,especially on women.PRE-READING
Before the Reading,the students are asked two questions about Jane Goodall:Why do you think Jane Goodall went to Africa to study chimps rather than to a university?Do you think her work is important?Why?The first question may interest the students greatly because one of the most interesting things about Jane Goodall is that she decided to go to the forest to study chimps instead of going to university.This might help the students think about their future plans and how to achieve them.They are encouraged to discuss and exchange their knowledge so as to have a more comprehensive understanding.READING
This is a key and interesting part of the unit because it introduces a day of Jane Goodall and her colleagues in the forests,observing the chimps.After reading the passage the students can know about Jane Goodall’s working methods,her great achievements and her attitude towards wild animals.In order to get the students to concentrate on the ideas of the reading passage,the teacher should help them study the text and find out the meaning of any word or phrase they are unsure of before the lesson.The advantage of this is that the students will be prepared for the problems they have,and thus the students will form a good habit of autonomous learning and improve their ability of autonomous reading.Reading this passage is a good chance for the students to improve their reading ability.So the students are encouraged to glance the title to predict the main plot of the whole story,to skim the passage to get the main idea,and then to scan the passage to get the details.And this passage is also a good piece of reading material for the students to practice writing and speaking.So the students will be given a writing task and a speaking task to complete.Task 1:Suppose you were Jane Goodall or her colleagues,tell the day you would spend in the

This section deals with the understanding of the reading.The answers to the questions cannot always be found straight away in the text,e.g.No.4.of Exercise 1.The students will need to be able to understand the reading passage and work out the answers from what they read.This is called inferential comprehension and is important in developing the understanding of what they read.In order to understand the reading passage better,the students are expected to work in pairs or in groups.They will work out the answers cooperatively,and then one from each group will report their answers to the class.LEARNING ABOUT LANGUAGE
In this part some exercises are designed to help the students learn how to use some useful words and phrases from the reading passage.Also they are to work out the verb or noun forms of some words,which will help them to get some knowledge on word formation.The students should be asked to do them individually first,and then check the answers with their partners.The purpose is to have the students learn from each other and help each other and share their success together.The grammar item in this unit is the Subject-verb Agreement.Some rules of which are quite familiar to them.The students are expected to stimulate their memory of the learned rules and to master the new ones especially when the subject is a collective noun.The students are first required to sum up some of the rules that they have learned.They should think of the situations where single or plural verbs should be used.This is to get the students to learn to sum up and sort out the knowledge and then they will try to sum up other rules with the help of the teacher.To consolidate the knowledge about the grammar item,they will finish exercises in Discovering Useful Structures on Page 5 and in Using Structures on Pages 43 and 44.USING LANGUAGE Reading
The reading passage tells a story about how a student decides his major at university after his research on Lin Qiaozhi(who was the first woman doctor to specialize in gynaecology and obstetrics,or women’s illness and the problems of having babies).After reading the passage,the student can learn about a great woman in China — Lin Qiaozhi and might be greatly impressed by her good nature and her achievements.At the same time the passage can help the students improve their integrating skills such as describing a person,which will be of great use for the writing part.Like the writer of the passage,they may have no clear idea about what to do in the future so instructions about future major and career choices are of necessity.Listening
The listening material is about the particular problems women have when they want a career of their own.These are problems that men do not have and so it is important that both men and women should be aware that they exist so that more efforts can be devoted to improving equality.The purpose of this listening exercise is to get the gist and some detailed information of a story.So some listening strategies should be introduced to the students.中鸿智业信息技术有限公司

1)It is not necessary to understand every word.2)Before listening to the tape,read the questions that follow it and guess what the correct answers are.3)Ignore what they don’t understand and concentrate on what they do.4)Pay attention to the topic sentences.For example,in this listening material,there is a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.If the students catch the topic sentences,it will be easy for them to understand the whole passage,to get to know the problems women faced and to get the information needed.5)Finally,enjoy the listening passage!Speaking
The purpose of this exercise is to encourage the students to think of impressive women around them who are prepared to do their best for others needing their care and then describe them to their classmates.They are to describe their appearances,characters,qualities and their achievements.There are some useful adjectives given in the Student’s Book on Page 7.The students can use them to describe them.The teacher will give some more adjectives for reference.The students are expected to work with their partners telling her/ his partners about the special woman around her/him.They should organize their thoughts and write down some key points,and then try to talk to each other.And the partners should note the good and the bad of the description and give some suggestions for improvement.In the end,some students will be chosen to set examples.After their description,the other students should try to guess who the women described are.Writing
The purpose of the writing is to get the students to describe a person,especially a woman.In the previous period the student has had a speaking activity with their partners.So they can take advantage of their notes about the appearances,characters,qualities and the achievements of their chosen woman.Here are some teaching suggestions for you to consider:
First,get the students to write an outline of the organization of the whole passage and classify the information they have about the women to describe,deciding which information is needed for the description of the appearances,which is for quality and which is for achievements.Second,get the students to write down some key sentences,paying attention to the tenses and voices.Third,ask the students to work on their first draft.When they finish,ask them to swap with their partners and get some advice from him/her.After that,ask them to write a second draft which includes their partner’s suggestions.Finally,show as many written passages as possible using the projector in class,and make comments on them.Assessment
