紫霄宫建于明永乐十一年(公元1413年).明代紫付宫殿宇、楼阁、廊庆大大小小一共八百六十间。清康熙至光绪期间,又屡经修缮和增补,是至今武当山上保存最完整的主要建筑之一。

进东天门,经过禹迹桥,绕过宝珠峰,下临禹迹池和金锁桥,象舞台启幕的感觉,豁然而开的看到万松深处一座朱赘碧瓦的紫甘宫。当游人渐近东天门层层叠叠石橙的时候,自下向上而望,只见山斌红墙当中一座庄严的门洞,进门之后,再走过一段山路,虽然四望依然是自然山景,但不久就望见禹迹桥。这座桥的跨度不大,是建在一道狭涧上面的,桥洞窄高,给这道小涧增添了幽深的景色,上面是精雕的玉石栏杆,桥下激流穿出。过桥之后,宝珠峰又挡在眼前,再向前走,便是禹迹池,跨过金锁桥,越过大宫门,只见左右各有一座碑亭,每座碑亭内有一只重达九十八吨、高米、长四米的石雕大龟,龟背上立有重达数吨的石碑,碑上镌刻有永乐为保护武当山和道教活动的亲笔“圣旨”(参阅附录三)。

过了碑亭,走进二宫门,是一座大院落,在紫霄殿前为丹挥和环以自石雕栏的三层祟台。左为日池,右为七星池,殿后左为月池,右为真一泉,泉水由殿左右绕阶流向山下。这样,由大宫门、碑亭、二宫门、崇台而到紫霄殿,在一片立体的平面上,使这座大殿更显得威严肃穆。

紫霄殿重檐垂脊,顶脊上布列着龙、凤、狮、麒麟等,奇姿妙态。殿内面阔、进深均为五间,上下檐部的斗拱和内糟的天花藻井,通体饰以各色花鸟和人物故事彩画。殿内正中昊天上帝端坐的塑像,两旁群神侍立。昊天上帝右侧横架一千杉树,直径有一尺多,长三丈多,相传是当年建造武当宫观剩下的一根。这根干衫能传声通话,在一端轻轻扣击,那端叮哨作响,嘴贴这头讲话,那一头贴耳可听。年长月久,游人已将两头各扣出一个五、六寸深的光滑小洞。游客广为传颂的“紫霄听杉’便由此而来。整个紫材宫背倚展旗峰。展旗峰石色如铁,石势奔骤跃动,好象一面大旗招展,它给这座庄严肃穆的宫殿衬托出威武的性格。这种借景的意图,为的是渲染道教宣扬的所谓“上帝命北极玄武建皂我玄旗镇北方”的象征①。这正是当时建筑艺术为封建政权和宗教服务的突出表现。

在展旗峰下有一天然石洞,名太子岩。内有石殿,据洞旁石码的年月考为元代至元二十七年(公元1291年),并且有一“重”字,但下一字已损,当是重修或重建的“重”字。如果在元初已属于重修,那么,石殿很有可能就是宋代的建筑了

石殿内有泥塑太子像,气韵生动,与紫霄宫门内水火二将的泥塑像都应该说是元代名雕塑家刘元一派的作品。据永乐十七年(公元1419年)给隆平侯张信、附马都尉沐听的救书里面说:“太子岩及太子坡二处各要童身真像,尔即照依长短阔狭备悉画图进来,故救。”对于太子像,永乐在救书里虽有指定,可是又不明说依照谁的长短阔侠塑造,这就可以明显地看出,永乐是命张、沐二人以他本人的童年作为蓝本,这也就是制造他自己是“真武,的这个舆论的透露。在历史上,封建统治者为了维护自己的统怡,常常使用这种手法。如热河避暑山庄的扎什伦布正殿悬挂的绎丝文殊菩萨像,面貌完全是依乾隆的面貌4的。太子坡的塑像已不存在了,现在只保存了这一件。刘元一派的精品传世已经很少,这件塑像不仅是这一派风格的代表作,而且也是反映封建统治者统治手段的历史见证。

紫霄宫还有重要的革命史迹。一九三一年五月,贺龙同志率领的红三军攻克均州后,曾在武当山驻防,战斗中负伤的同志集中在紫霄宫西宫大院治疗,红三军司令部也设在紫霄殿。贺龙同志曾在紫霄宫后的父母殿住过,如今桌椅、床铺尚在,简朴庄穆。同年六月,国民党反动派进山,红军部队向房县撤退,伤员被围,有七名负伤的干部挺身而出,掩护其他伤员,在西天门外白果树下壮烈牺牲。解放后,政府将七烈士遗体移葬在宫门前的踢剑台上,现在踢剑台称为烈士墓。与踢剑台相距不远,还有福地殿、万松亭的遗址和榔梅园。

太和宫 [皇经堂]是道教设醮和早晚开坛功课的场所。也是武当山目前保存最完好的一处清代木雕作品。始建于明永乐年间,道光二十九年(1849年)重建。民国四年再次修茸殿堂三间,为砖木结构,硬山顶,抬梁式木构架。屋顶饰翠缘鱼琉璃瓦,前为廊后为檐,正面为全开式格扇门。面阔三间10.13米,进深9.2米,通高9.9米。额书“白玉京中”四个大字,刚劲有力,金碧辉煌。道家称天上有白玉京,是神仙的居处。又说“老子(太上老君)上处玉京,为神王之宗”。指诸神在皇经堂内,如同天上的白玉京中。额坊隔扇门有木制浮雕的众多道教人物故事和珍禽神兽,雕工精细,形象生动。殿悬挂的金匾上书“生天立地”四个大字,是清道光皇帝亲笔御赐。殿内供奉着主神是真武,两边侍从是金童玉女。左边供奉的是三清尊神,右边奉着观世音,道教称“慈航道人”,这是道教中全真教派三教合一的产物。殿内依次排列的还有灵官、吕洞宾及八仙。[壁画]这八幅壁画为真武修真图,依次排列内容是:(1)辞母进山;(2)黑虎巡山(3)潜心修炼(4)诚心投岩(5)五龙捧圣(6)得道升天(7)仙台受旨(8)巡视三界

[朝拜殿]朝拜殿于永乐年间敕建,清康熙后移太和宫,额书“大岳太和宫”,该殿砖石结构,歇山顶式,屋顶饰绿色琉璃瓦。殿内为卷拱式梁架,墙体下部为石雕须弥座,面阔进深为一间,均为8.13米,通高9.45米,殿内陈列真武帝君、金童、玉女和8尊从官神像。过去由于封建等级制度,武当山又称皇家庙观,紫禁城内只有七品以上官员和名人才能通过,朝山信士因不能进入紫禁城,只能在这里朝拜,故称“朝拜殿”。殿门两旁臵有两块铜碑,其一,为明世宗敕建雷坛设像记事碑,碑为嘉靖三十九年(1560年)二月立,为都察院左副都御史鄢卿书;赵成镌碑,碑文记载,在天柱峰北天门外建雷坛、造金像的事迹。其二,为明世宗遣臣致祭真武碑,碑通高1.8米,碑刻有二龙戏珠,下刻“御制”二字。碑边缕刻龙、云等图案。碑文为遣工部右侍郎陆杰祭北极佑圣真君。殿前两侧是钟楼和鼓楼,钟响如雷,波及百里,与方圆百里的九宫九观遥相呼应。道人以钟板为号令进行着有序的修炼生活,俗称“晨钟暮鼓”。殿的左前方有一座小殿堂为万圣阁,里面供奉着各路神仙。

[紫禁城]亦名红城,又名皇城,因金殿在上而得名。建于明永乐十七年(1419年),永乐十五年(1417年)遣隆平候等督建。圣旨:“武当山古名太和山,又名大岳,今名为大岳太和山,大顶金殿,名大岳太和宫,钦此。”嗣后,在永乐十七年又下一道敕建紫禁城圣旨,敕隆平候张信、驸马都尉沐昕:“今大岳太和山顶砌造四周墙垣,其山本身不要分毫修动;其墙务在随地势,高则不论丈尺,便人过不去为止;务要坚固壮实,万万年与天地同其久远,故敕”。整个城墙周长344.43米,高因依山就势数丈不等。南城门基厚2.4米,城墙顶厚1.26米,金城占地面积34443平方米。均用石条砌成,每块石条重达这千余斤。该墙利用古代建筑中的力学收分方法而砌。从里看往外倾斜,从外看往里倾斜,历经600年它确捍然不动。四周设有东、西、南、北四座天门,全是青石雕制,造型庄严,象征天阙。工程浩大而艰巨,描绘了古代劳动人民的创造智慧,全城东、西、南、北四座天门只有南天门可通,其它三门均为妆饰。南天门处设有三座门,中为神门,只有斋醮大典时才能启用。右边是鬼门,无门可开。左边是人门,凡进入紫禁城朝拜者,均从这里经过。人门内中线石墁有一鱼纹。内设有一机关,设定机关启开时间,凡在这里失足者被认为是有过之人。

[方振武碑文]方振武,位吉鸿昌的部下,是一名抗日将领。他诗文:“万丈雄山势欲奔,峰高五岳接天门,秦皇汉武封禅日,不受虚荣亦自尊”。前两句描绘武当云海有万马奔腾之势,其山之誉不在五岳而超出五岳。封禅是指祭祀天地,指秦始皇、汉武帝当年在泰山祭祀时,武当山还名声不扬。“不受虚荣亦自尊”,其语双关。其一,反映了作者因极力主张抗日而受蒋介石的歧视、排斥和放逐。其二,诗中自言其志地表达了坚定的抗日气节,掷地有声,虽英雄无用武之地,但愿寄托于武当山的神威。方振武将军的孙子陈方安先生是香港原内政部部长,现居香港。[灵官殿]建于明代。依岩建造的小石殿,殿内臵锡制小殿。殿内锡制灵官像于1975年被吴某盗走砸毁,后吴某依法判刑。殿门横联是道光十八年拾眩“北极通枢”,是指金殿供奉着北极玄天上帝,凡过往信士都要经过灵官爷的识别检验。入殿口放臵数根重达百余斤的钢鞭,是灵官爷的刑具;道教称灵官爷有三只眼,能识人间善恶,且铁面无私。过去,在信士中有过之人,欲钢鞭吓得魂飞魄散,有楹联文证:上联天知地知未有不知,下联善报恶报迟早要报,横联善恶分明。殿内陈列有6块历代皇帝在武当山举行斋醮活动的记事碑。第一块碑记洪熙元年二月,仁宗皇帝遣礼部侍郎胡莹致祭于真武神。胡莹,在永乐年间受朱棣秘旨,在鄂、川、滇一带查证建文皇帝的下落。常有锦衣卫在武当山一带活动。据史载,胡莹在一次上朝前,与永乐皇帝耳语了几句话,朱棣表现得十分兴奋,当朝宣布胡 任礼部侍郎。大臣们猜测,都认为是有关建文皇帝下落的结案,但结案如何,谁也无法知道。第二块碑记载,宣德元年,宣宗皇帝遣太常寺丞袁正安致祭于北极真武之神。第三块碑刻记载,正统元年英宗皇帝遣平江北左镇致祭于北极真武之神。第四块碑记载,天顺元年英宗皇帝遣定西候蒋琬致祭。第五块碑记载,景泰元年,景帝朱祁钰遣翰林院侍讲徐瑾之祭。第六块碑记载,成化元年宽宗皇帝遣沈瑶致祭。

从以上碑刻记载中可以看出武当山的政治地位,明朝历代皇帝都在登基之年(即元年)朝拜、致祭真武大帝。尤其是英宗皇帝,两次任帝都是元年致祭。由此可见,君权神授的思想,在明朝时期影响极深。[九链蹬]走出灵官殿,有一条镶嵌在悬崖峭壁上的迂回九曲石作蹬道,俗称“九链蹬”。始建于明永乐十四年,嘉靖年间曾作局部维修,整个建筑设计巧妙,布局精美,气势恢宏,造型典雅,颇有摧人奋进、勇攀高峰的感觉。“九”在道教中称为天数,穿过九链蹬就到了武当山的顶峰,俗称“金顶”,是真武大帝坐镇的地方。[金殿]亦称大岳太和宫。太和宫,地处海拔1612米的武当山天柱峰的顶端,故又称“金顶”。来到金顶仿佛臵身于仙景,天柱之巅约160平方米,金殿臵中,后有圣父、圣母殿;左有签房,右是印房。其布局合理,主次分明,错落有致。金殿,建于明永乐十四年(1416年),重檐庑殿式屋顶,脊饰龙、凤、狮子、海马、天马等飞禽走兽。四壁用隔扇门装饰,额枋施线刻旋子图案,殿内天花及壁上铸线饰流云纹样,线条圆润流畅,地面紫色海洋化石纹石墁地,洗磨光洁,显得富丽堂皇。殿堂面阔为三间,宽4.4米,深3.15米,高5.54米,殿为铜铸,重达2万斤。通体鎏以赤金,在封建社会“金”代表皇权。这里充分体现了皇权的至高无上。

大岳太和宫,是永乐皇帝加封。金殿的造型恰似北京故宫太和殿的造型。朱棣将“太和”二字用于武当山,名为大岳太和山,大顶金殿命名为大岳太和宫,意为天下太平之意。北京故宫的金銮殿下有一“奉天殿”,即奉上天之意,北京奉天殿与武当山大岳太和宫同为一体,意味着朱棣座镇的江山稳固,不仅达到了“君权神授”的政治目的,而且也符合道教所追求的“天人合一”的思想境界。金殿是在京城铸造的,途径运河至长江到汉江运至武当山。为确保金殿安装工程,明永乐十四年九月初九日敕教督何浚护送金殿船兵:“今命尔护送金殿船只至武当山,沿途船只务要小心谨慎,遇天道晴朗,风水顺行即行,船上要十分清洁,不许做饭。”

据先辈传云:均州城朝武街汉江码头金匠场,即是当年堆臵从船上起坡并试组装之地,故名“金匠场”。华中理工大学高级建筑师张良臬教授在徐州(江苏省)时亲自拜读了一处刻石:明永乐十四年节(1416年)何睿奉圣旨护运金殿经过徐州时停留,何睿刻石以记志:“金殿及神像在北京铸造,奉圣旨护送到武当山,途经徐州时因故驻足。此刻石至今留存,在徐州的运河之畔,为今天研究金殿提供了实物佐证。金殿是用数以千计的铜制构件榫卯安装而成,工艺精密技术已是之极,无论这里风雷雨电,殿内长明灯一闪不闪。相传是殿内一颗避风珠的作用,其实不然,用现代科学物理现象解释,就是空气不能对流的缘故。古代铸造家们已将冷缩的系数计算的精确致极。

1992年,西欧五国专家考察武当山时称赞:武当山金殿是世界掌上明珠,那么武当山金殿是国宝,其他地方有金殿吗?有。但都是仿武当山金殿制作的。据《中国美术全集•建筑艺术编•宗教建筑》记:“金殿发源于武当山,现存最早的金殿铸于大德十年(1307),此外云南昆明太和宫曾于明万历三十年(1602年)仿武当山铸造金殿,明末移往宾川鸡足山,今毁。现存金殿为康熙十年(1671)吴三桂仿建。此外,苏州玄妙观和山东泰山碧霞洞各有一座明代铜亭,也都是仿武当山的铜亭,碧霞洞的铜亭今移臵岱庙。上述的金殿和铜亭,与武当山现存的两座殿和数座鎏金铜亭相差甚远。武当山元、明两座金殿于1961年3月14日列入国家第一批文物保护单位,武当山文物保管所于同年应运而生。1994年12月17日,联合国教科文组织将武当山古建筑群正式列入《世界文化遗产名录》,两座金殿在武当山古建筑史中占据了重要地位。

[金光妙相]殿内上方悬挂着“金光妙相”金匾,是清代康熙皇帝亲书,意思说殿内铜铸鎏金的金光灿烂的真武大帝玄妙的神像。

[真武神像]宋时因避赵玄郎讳,改玄武为真武,道教称真武大帝像。高1.86米,铜铸鎏金饰,着袍衬铠,披发跣足,丰姿魁伟,面貌丰润慈祥,颇有胸怀大志的帝王之像。自明代以来,名人墨客顶礼膜拜,被拥戴为“四大名山皆拱揖,五方玄岳共朝宗”的英明方神。“孙悟空保师父唐僧西天取经途中,唐僧到黄眉妖变的小雷音寺拜佛,被妖怪捉住......孙悟空无计可施,忽然想起北方真武荡魔天尊,驾起筋斗云,来到武当山,一天门、二天门、三天门,却至太和宫外,要见师相......祖师下殿迎到太和宫......行者便将西天取经,路遭险难,特来拜求师相一助力之事都一五一十说了。祖师道:”我当年威镇北方,统摄真武之位,剪伐天下妖邪,乃奉玉帝敕旨,后又披发跣足,踏腾蛇龟,领五雷神将......今日静享武当山,安逸太和殿,一向海岳平宁,今蒙大圣下降不得不行......我谅着那西路上纵有妖邪,也不为大害,今着龟、蛇二将并五雷神龙,与你相助力......“ 孙行者拜谢了祖师,即同龟、蛇、龙神各带精锐之兵,复转西方之界,打败了黄眉妖,疏通了西天取经的路障。

据史书记载:吴承恩是江苏淮安人,科举屡试不第,嘉靖四十五年(公元1566年)才做官,任浙江长兴县丞,晚年来湖北,曾在设于蕲州的荆王府做过”纪善官“。蕲州距武当山不远,书中所写人物和地名,如果不身临其地,是写不出此景的。由此不难看出他曾多次登临武当山,考察山川地名,把有关武当山各种神话传说搜集整理,写进了《西游记》,较详细地记载和保留了武当山的传说,才使我们今日能一饱眼福。关于真武神像的来历有两种说法:一曰明永乐皇帝朱棣之像。相传明初,明成祖朱棣靖难之役登上皇位后,皇亲贵族有些不服,但又不敢言怒,只好大家都信奉道教;朱棣得知后,并与军师姚广孝生计,决定在武当山大兴土木,遣工部侍郎郭进、隆平候张信、驸马教尉沐昕,日役30万军民夫匠,建造了规模宏大的宫观庙宇,并在全国诏告画家,绘画武当山主神真武像。来者七十一名被杀。轮到第七十二名,是高丽族姓姬的画家,姬画匠赴京前便就没打算回来,已将后事安排妥当。执事太监引见时,朱棣正在沐浴,听说画匠已到,使穿上浴衣出来接见,画匠叩拜皇上时,朱棣说了声“请抬起头来看”,并会意地向画匠点了点头。那聪明的姬画匠,已在第二天早时将画像献给了皇上,朱棣看了欣然大笑,当即朱笔御批交工匠赶制铸造。这位姬画匠被封为皇宫画师,得了高官厚禄。原来这画像就是姬画匠作叩拜时,朱棣皇帝的披发跣足的英姿。武当山宫观主神均是真武像,从此朱棣就不愁谁不拜在我的脚下。二曰元代吴兴赴,字道子,所画。据明“山志”记载:元代大文学家虞集在《嘉庆图序》中叙述:“……真武像,吴兴赴公子昂(元代大画家、书法家)写其梦中所见者,而上清羽士方壶子之所临也”。他接着详述赵子昂在“神明气清静处真独乃梦:天人披鬓,跣足、玄衣、宝剑、坐临岩谷”对他说“你善绘事,追步顾陆,凡吾真仪,子善记录,审而传之……”言毕冉冉而升,梦亦遂觉。明月当户,香彩遍屋,取炎亟写神运,掌握分毫无失。就这样,赵子昂半夜梦醒,画了第一幅梦中所见真武大帝之像,传给了上清道士(画家)方壶子,方壶子临摩了数十幅广传各宫观,真武神像即如此之妙传天下。

[龟蛇二将]亦名玄武,臵金殿内真武神像,前御案下,长0.53米,宽0.34米,高0.49米,为铜铸鎏金饰。玄武为北方之神,龟水族也,水属北,其龟黑色故曰“玄”,龟有甲传捍御,故曰作为“北方之神”,主要主水之职。

[父母殿楹联]上联:芝检荷神庥,前当惠佑椿庭,龙钟幸予恩荣宴;下联:箕畴完老福,从此声添鳌艺,戴德弥深叩感忱。芝检,芝,芝兰。检,检署。芝兰之室,比喻有助于做善事的环境《孔子家语六本》与善人居,如入芝兰之室。荷:荷戴,位臵不变建筑的自重。庥:庥同休。旧称吉祥之意,以上指真武父母殿是助人为善吉祥的神明休息的地方。椿庭:指父亲,或父母。引伸自《庄子逍遥游》“古有大椿者,以八千岁为春•秋”。上联第二句是说:父母殿,作为真武报答安臵父母的场所。末句龙钟指其老父母。恩荣宴,见《道藏》“天宫家庆”,说的是真武被封为玉虚师相玄天上帝的同时,其父亦封为净乐天君明真大帝,母封为善胜天后,琼真上仙,全家团园共宴。下联:箕畴,箕,箕宿,星官之名,畴,地盘,头句意思是,父母安居在星宿所居的天宫得老来之福。第二句,鳌艺,指女娲断鳌足立四极天柱,整句意思是说:圣父圣母从此给武当天柱增了声誉。未句:说真武父母对众生真情实意广布恩德。此中有典故见《道藏》“谷岩修果”文中说:三月三日真武生日那天,真武要去参见父母,向他们呈述人间善恶的人和事。父母出于慈悲之怀,对恶人惩处,从轻发落;对求福行善之人则加倍赐福添寿。所以三月三这日来武当山敬香的人特别多。[金顶奇观]金顶奇观主要有七十二峰朝大顶,武当云海,武当日出,天造玄武,飞蚁来潮,金殿倒影,雷火炼殿、怒海奔潮,空中悬松、雀不漫顶、海马吐雾等(见附注)。

[回转后山蹬道]看了这些景观,可能大家很想知道朱棣为什么要耗资万计修建武当山?古有“北建故宫,南修武当”之说。武当山地处秦巴山脉之顶端,古往今来都为军事要塞。三国时,诸葛亮就是建议刘备从这里入川的。从历史原因是上分析,朱棣靖难之役,夺了侄儿朱允文的皇位,一是朱允文不知去向,同时政治上需要稳定,有人说朱允文逃到了海外,也有人说朱允文到武当山出家了,更有人禀报皇上说在云南某个寺庙,众说纷纭。可是无论朱允文走到哪里都是朱棣的一个祸患。朱棣意决大修武当,并派密臣胡 以寻找张三丰为由四处打听。日役使三十万军民夫匠修建武当,一者可说太平盛世,大兴土木;二者形成了在华中腹地的一个军事重镇。二是宋元以来武当山就是中原地区道教活动中心,中国自古就有得中原者得天下之说,武当山的道教兴盛,满足了中原地区人民宗教信仰的愿望,君权神授也就顺理成章了。[古铜殿]武当山天柱峰太和宫转辗殿内有一座我国最早的古铜殿(《中国文物之最》一书作了肯定)它铸造于元朝大德十一年(1307)距今已六百八十二年了。殿为铜铸仿木结构,悬山式顶,高2.4宽2.7深2.5米,略呈方形,结构严谨朴实,正面角柱间使用四抹球状十字花隔扇,隔扇上臵一横枋承托瓦顶。瓦底和隔扇均铸有铭文,铭文记载,元代武汉各地信士捐资铸殿事宜。殿通体榫卯,可拆可合。原在天柱峰极顶,明永乐年以规制弗称,转于小莲峰,臵于1.3米高的雕花须弥石座上,外罩一砖瓦小殿叫转辗殿,殿内有真武大帝、金童、玉女、太乙、天罡银质金饰神象,造型古朴,体型健壮,面容饱满,衣纹线条自然流畅,有宋代雕塑之遗风。朝山信士来到这里都要朝拜,转运也就成了道教信仰的习俗。

[钟楼碑文] 咸丰七年四月,清将军巴杨阿,后补知府唐训方与延绥总兵龙泽厚合力围剿最后一支捻军—谷城义军。义军只有千余人,他们誓不投降都愿为伸张正义而决战到底,于是冒死突围上了武当山。唐训方部队到了南岩,不敢冒然进军,便借故摆下香案,向武当之神祷告一番。此时,乌鸦飞来寻求施舍,可是官兵们无意施舍,使乌鸦空喜了一场。乌鸦在空中看到突围后向金顶转移的捻军,于是便跟踪而去,这一下却给唐训方充当了向导。

捻军上山后,官兵追踪到一天门下,激战了两昼夜,都被捻军打垮下来,唐训方便下令又摆放香案向武当之神祷告说:“我们本来准备用五百捆竹杆点火,用火攻,又怕毁坏了胜迹,得罪了真武大帝。现在只得暂时退兵,引诱捻军下山。” 官兵撤退后,捻军为了筹粮,准备秘密下山,结果,在琼台与延绥总兵部队遭遇。被唐龙两军前后夹击,直败退到金顶紫禁城。

义军激战了三天三夜,官兵尸积如山。终因寡不敌众,大部战死,剩下的则跳下紫禁城绝壁,全部壮烈牺牲。至此,捻军起义失败。但他们为推翻腐朽的清王朝而浴血奋战、甘洒热血的英雄壮举,永载史册,与武当金顶相映成辉。

[一柱擎天碑刻]是民国初年(1926年)湖北省教育厅厅长宗彝书。形容武当山天柱峰象一根撑天的柱子直插云霄。[李宗仁诗文碑刻]“为寻胜境武当游,步步崎岖云不休,四面烟峦归眼底,疏疏林叶万山秋”。是抗日将领李宗仁与其秘书李品仙手书之诗。当年李宗仁、李品仙带领中国杂牌军在台庄一战,歼灭了日本土肥原机械师团二万人。后来撤到襄阳、均县办干训团。此时他们有兴上武当,尽管山道崎岖而兴致却很高,站在金顶一望七十二峰云雾缭绕,尽收眼底,似抗日万众处于肃杀之秋,抗日锋火在燃烧,亦情亦景融为诗句。

[金仙洞] 地势险峻,洞中一木制房架,后因年久失修,自然毁坏。传说李时珍曾住洞中采药治病,因其治好很多香客的病,人称为金仙。

[摩岩]夏谷岁丁已四月既望,襄豫众匪,由竹房窜入武当金顶,会集兵马剿之,贼渠以下数百余人,悉就擒伏诛,时当重午,胜地肃请,喜而铭之,铭曰:”天柱峰高万丈,谁负险据其上,道魔慧生障,励我身,奋我交,数旬全扫荡,山有灵,顶无恙。

这段文字记载了清朝末期的历史,1851年,中国这块古老的土地上发生了一件实属罕见的农民起义--太平天国运动。它的起义口号是“绝对平均”这对于当时旧中国农民处于水深火热中无疑是一种强有力的吸引,起义的人数也急剧地增长,势力扩大到18个省份,当时,襄樊一个全国有名的捻军首领名叫高二先的人,他率领了十万农民起义军向统治阶级宣战,但是由于队伍内部存在种种问题,又加上武器装备落后,最后以失败而告终,虽然起义失败,但也给封建王朝以沉重地打击。
