Freedom and Equality

Recently, I have read Mrs.Stowe's famous work, “Uncle Tom's Cabin.” Honest, kind-hearted, religious Uncle Tom;courageous and prudent, smart, studious of mixed slave George;mercenary, ruthless slave traders, Hailey;human nature destroys, conscience is ruined in the Liege Lei;a sense of justice, but the drift The St.Clair and other lifelike characters left me a deep impression. However, I am the most memorable is the intelligent and lively, but untamed, and later was transferred teach self-esteem may love slave girl TOM.The reason this story touched me, because it truly depicts the United States was the tragic situation of slavery in the old society, the old society of the inhuman treatment of slaves, the performance of head.Hero Tom good faith, is an honest old slaves. He is a devout Christian, believes in God, filled with longing for a better life. However, the fate of the tortured face, he repeatedly struggles with patience instead of resistance, only submissive, eventually murdered by slave owners under the lash.Hero Tom is not an ordinary slave, the slave system is that no one can do in the great man, even the holy God can not be compared.TOM blacks got the most black, a pair of round, bright eyes, like glittering like glass beads, looks a bit strange, her face was shrewd and cunning combination of Kyrgyzstan's wonderful, like a goblin-like.She loves to steal, stealing, after also lie assumed a look of innocence;her misbehavior on the implementation of all the mess of her revenge, mischief;she would take advantage of the master is away, crazy busy for hours, to home mess. Her owner exhausted all means to punish her, educate her, trying to change her bad habits, but no, this is only because there is no love!

Think about it!This was originally a lovely child, born to slavery, her master of all belongs to them, the so-called master of her fate. Her childhood growing up in the master's beatings, made her develop a liar, a bad habit of stealing things, that her original beauty, purity of heart tarnished. In this there is no dignity, experiencing being separated all day flogged and circumstances, how can we have a noble character and firm in faith? Only pure, beautiful, selfless love can save her soul! When the angelicEva on her when she said love, TOM cast eyes with tears, her heart by a ray of sunshine of love.Sure enough, TOM later changed for the better, she managed to get care for other people. This is abuse, never achieve the effect of preaching, the words full of love beyond all! This is the power of love!

From this story, I saw Tom and others helpful good quality, but also to see the world Jia chou E, of the United States a deeper understanding of history-the sun around the world is not the original one, there are many of the dark side.We need to continue efforts to avoid such a tragedy repeat itself in modern society. In our lives, there are many children like as TOM.Their bad behavior, not love, listen to reason, then do not hate him, to understand with love, tolerance, stripped away a layer of yellow green shoots things, numb with love to the hearts of probation. To always remember;the power of love is great, supreme!“Uncle Tom's Cabin,” published this masterpiece has been 150 years, it has been able to make the readers today are still impressed, but also because of the book to promote the love and humanity in the disappearance of slavery today already is the eternal pursuit of mankind.Freedom and Equality

No slavery, be equal

These days I've just finished the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin that left a really deep impression on me and we can see.It is a book written in 1852 in response to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, Uncle Tom's Cabin has been considered as the most influential anti-slavery novel in that period and described by Stowe herself as a “series of sketches” describing the human cruelty of slavery, opens with a description of Arthur Shelby's Kentucky plantation during the antebellum period. There are several impressive characters in this novel, George who is clever and brave;Harry, a beautiful and talented child who sings dances and mimes;Mrs.Shelby, a very religious woman;Sambo and Qimbo and so on.The major character Uncle Tom who was the most impressive in this novel was a devout Christian. He endured the miserable fate bravely and aroused the white's sympathy for slaves with his Christ's sacrifice and the tolerance of returning good for evil. This novel focuses on the distinctive personalities of Uncle Tom deeply influenced by Christianity and the important role Uncle Tom's Cabin playing on abolition;and the Significance of “Uncle Tom” to the harmonious world's development, and the effect on modern people. In the book, at the beginning, the author presents us a very beautiful image of a rather harmonious family who live a happy life. However, that beautiful image couldn't last long, the darkness came soon. The master of this happy family, Uncle Tom was arranged into a difficult situation. As Shelby, the not cruel master, he has incurred serious debts-prompting him sell some slaves to avoid financial ruin, so Uncle Tom, Shelby's loyal servant since childhood was sold to Mr.Haley, the slave trader.Uncle Tom remained loyal to his master, despite his betrayal and the risk of death at the cruel hands of a new master. The slaves at the plantation were very mournful, but Tom remained placid and tried to read his Bible for comfort. On the steamboat to New Orleans, where Tom was to be sold, Tom befriended an angelic little girl, “Little Eva” St.Clare.Uncle Tom saved the five-year-old beauty from drowning, and she convinced her father to buy Tom for her own family. In her family, Tom enjoyed his life because of the girl's love;Tom's contentment does not last, however, because Eva soon falls ill.Dying, Eva asked Mr.St.Clare to free Tom after her death. But Mr.St.Clare is so sad by her death that he never legally freed Tom before he himself was killed trying to mediate a barroom scuffle.Mrs.St.Clare sold the slaves to settle her husband's debts and Tom was sold to Simon Legree who was so violent that beat his slaves brutally. At last, when Mr.Shelby, finally found Uncle Tom, he was almost died. After Tom was dead and buried, Shelby went back and freed his slaves. As we all can see that Uncle Tom's Cabin was an anti-slavery novel and it was even considered as one factor that caused the Civil War.In the novel, the slaves were sold from one place to another frequently, and their fate was tragic, with no exception-just like Uncle Tom, no matter he was under the control of kind masters or evil masters, he can't escape the misfortune of being sold from one master to another. We can't see any human right of them, so terrible. As someone said, with more people realizing the inhumanity of slavery in the 19th century, slavery became one of the most important issues and it became more violent year by year in American society. However, slavery was not abolished irrevocably until ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865, following the Civil War.After the passage of Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this novel Uncle Tom's Cabin which publicized the evil of slavery to a wide audience. Now we are in the 21st century, we may never come across such kind of thing. However, this book can always remind of us that there ever has existed this evil and we can't let it happen again. And “equality”、“human right ” can't just be a slogan, we should make it come true really and always.

Uncle Tom's cabin is frequently criticized by people who have never read the work, myself included.I decided I finally needed to read it and judge it for myself. And I have to say, that for all its shortcomings, it is really a remarkable book. The standout characteristics of this book are the narrative drive, the vivid characters, the sprawling cast, the several completely different worlds that were masterfully portrayed, and the strong female characters in the book. The portrayal of slavery and its effects on families and on individuals is gut-wrenchingGeorge Harris, Eliza, Topsy, Cassie, Emmeline, Chloe, Jane and Sara, Mammy, Alphonse, Prue, and others, span the whole spectrum of humanity--they are vivid and real. The comments of a previous reviewer that the book actually justifies slavery and that it shows that Christianity defends slavery are due to sloppy reading of the book.No one reading the book could possibly come to the conclusion that it does anything but condemn slavery in the strongest and most indubitable terms. This was the point of the book. The aside about capitalism was just that, an aside on the evils of capitalism. It did not and does not negate the attack on slavery.Secondly, another major point of the book is that TRUE Christianity does not and could not ever support slavery.Stowe points out the Biblical references used to claim that Christianity defended slavery merely to show how the Bible can be misused by those who wish to defend their own indefensible viewpoint. It's ridiculous to say that the book “shows that Christianity supported slavery”.It shows that some misguided preachers abused certain Bible passages and ignored other ones to support their view of slavery.

My Opinion on Ethical Value in Uncle Tom’s Little Cabin From the perspective of the African Americans, we can draw that either the early black slaves or the latter the most despised “colored people” don’t gain their deserved respect and dignity.Different personalities and fates in these people, thanks to the depiction of writers like Beecher Stowe, Margaret Mitchell, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison and so on, are vividly described and provokes the descendants’ thoughts towards black men’s unfair destiny. We have learned in Invisible Man, the protagonist’s conscientious and painstaking attitude to strive for his “bright future”;however, being “blindfolded”.We also witnessed in Native Son, Richard Wright has shaped a rebellious black man as well. While in Uncle Tom’s Little Cabin, Uncle Tom, is to the liking of the majority readers as his meek and pious and kind personality. In this great antislavery novel which turned to be a overnight success and gained the high approval of the President Lincoln, mentioning it as a work that unveiled the Civil War, the most remarkable key is its sharp guidance of kindness and evil.In terms of the ethical matter, we can never neglect the major issue: Christianity.Tom is the very representative of the advocator of its creed even at the time before his death. He faithfully obeyed his doctrine and believed in God as well as people’s kindness. To my surprise, he even forgave his two murderers’ sin.Throughout the whole masterpiece, he always acted as a devout person, which wined him great respect and true friendship.Eva, the little girl Uncle Tom saved, can also reflect Christianity. She asked his father to buy Uncle Tom to express her thanks. After they became good friends, the little angel shared a lot about love, forgiveness with Tom.Her sympathy and goodness exerted great impact on others. For example, her father decided to free Uncle Tom: her aunt shed off the prejudice of black slaves. These are good points, however, what I want to emphasize is that this novel also demonstrated Christianity’s contradictory side with black men.Uncle Tom, though presents as the incarnation o f kindness and justice, to some point, just like the potent and sympathetic Jesus, can not avoid his fate of being murdered. And this just reminds me of the black girl in Alice Walker’s Purple. This work described the process of a pious black girl’s growing up, from bearing everything from her stepfather’s sexual assault and others’ despise, to a strong woman living for herself, immune from “God’s arrangement of one’s fate”.Back to this novel, I just see the resemblance in Uncle Tom.He was always polite and kind to everyone, doing others favors without asking for rewards. But he never strongly fought for his own freedom. So in a word, the contradictory feature between Christianity and black men’s fates is shown from the moral side by the author Stowe. There are many other vivid persons in this novel, too.Like the strong mother Eliza, Mr and Mrs Shelby and his son, they all worth a discussion. They are very kind, too.Or at least, not bad, vicious people.Taking Eliza for example, I would rather glorify her maternity than her identity as a female black woman.Actually, I was deeply moved by her great love towards her son.She alone, took her little son for freedom.I respect her for her courage very much.Mr and Mrs Shelby, are difficult to define whether they are good or bad.As the identity of exploiters, they may be wrong. But who can blame this innocent individuals in that big and complex social background before the emancipation of black slaves? As the identity of ranchers in the south, they are very kind to their slaves. That’s very inspiring.Their son loved Uncle Tom so much that he always looked for the whereabouts of Tom.He can also be titled “good”.To conclude, in my point of view, everyone is very complicated. We should balance the view critically.I like this novel for a major reason as the fact that it provokes my thinking about what is right, and what is wrong.
