今晚，在54场鏖战之后，我们的初选之役宣告结束。

16个月之前，我们一起站在伊利诺依州春田市老州议会大厦的台阶上，那是我们并肩战斗的开始。之后我们辗转数千里，倾听了各式各样的声音。你们说华盛顿必须变革，你们说今年必须与众不同，你们选择不再受怀疑或恐惧的摆布而是听从内心的渴望。正是因着你们的愿景，才有了这段历史性的旅程。今晚，这段旅程即将结束，新的旅程即将开始，我们的目标是美国全新而美好的明天。今晚，我可以站在你们面前并宣布我就是民主党的总统候选人。

我要感谢在此竞选旅程中与我们站在一起的每一个美国人，他们与我们风雨同舟，和衷共济。我还要感谢与我一同竞争候选人资格的各位先生和女士。

当我们国家的这一关键时刻，民主党能涌现出这样一批德才兼备的人来竞选总统，我们应为此感到骄傲。他们不仅是我的对手，更是让我受益良多的朋友、公仆和爱国者。他们都热爱自己的国家，并愿意为了把国家建设得更加美好而不懈奋斗。他们是民主党的领导者，也是未来数年我们这个国家的领导者。

这对于在初选旅程中比其他参选人都走得更远的希拉里·克林顿参议员而言，尤其如此。她创造了历史，不仅因为她做了其他女性从未做到过的事情，而且因为她是一个领导者，她用她的力量、勇气和把祖国建设得更加美好的承诺激励了无数美国人。

在过去16个月中，尽管我们之间存在分歧，但根据我数次与她同台的了解，她的信念让人肃然起敬。哪怕面临严峻的形势，她依然坚持其信念。正是这信念，支撑着她与丈夫比尔·克林顿数年前在德州第一次参加竞选；正是这信念，支撑着她参与到“保护儿童基金会”的工作，并在成为第一夫人后继续呼吁医疗卫生改革；正是这信念，推动她成为参议员，并开启了艰辛的总统参选之路。她不懈地追求改善普通美国人的生活，不管前路多么艰难。请你们相信，当美国最终实现全民医保的时候，那肯定是因为她的大力推动；当我们的能源政策改弦易辙、儿童免于贫穷的时候，那肯定是因为她的不懈努力。因为她，我们的党、我们的国家变得更好；因为有幸与希拉里·克林顿竞争，我自己也获得了提高。

有人说，漫长的初选使得了民主党更加分化，削弱了我们的力量。然而我要说，正是因为有了这样的初选，许许多多的美国人才有机会第一次投票给他们中意的人选。这样的初选也让那些独立参选人以及共和党人明白，选举不只是政党之间问鼎白宫的游戏，而是关于改革政府的一场运动。我们看到大量的年轻人、非裔美国人、拉丁裔美国人、各个年龄层的妇女都参与进来，这些不仅打破了参选记录，而且激励了美利坚民族。

每个人都选择支持自己深深信赖的候选人。但到了最后，驱使你们走出家门，沿着一个一个街区排成长队投下手中那一票的，并不是候选人，不是我、希拉里参议员或者任何其他人，而是你们心中的信念。你们相信，在这样一个决定性的时刻，我们不能再重复以前的教训，我们欠我们的孩子一个美好的未来，我们欠我们的国家一个美好的未来。今晚，如果你仍然梦想着这样的未来，我呼吁，让我们共同努力，让我们联合起来为美利坚绘制一个更美好的未来。

几个月之后，共和党将在这里召开全国代表大会，他们的政策与我们很不同。届时，约翰·麦凯恩将正式被提名为共和党总统候选人。麦凯恩是一个英雄，他

为美国服务了很多年。我钦佩他的精神以及他的许多成就，尽管他对我采取否定的态度。我们之间的分歧不是个人性质的，而是不同政策之间的。

麦凯恩可以炫耀自己在过去如何坚持己见而不唯党命是从，但这次总统竞选他并没有大打“坚持己见”牌。

当过去一年麦凯恩在参议院95%的议题上选择与布什站在一起的时候，这并不是变革。

当麦凯恩宣称将延续布什失败的经济政策时，这也不是变革。要知道，布什的经济政策没能够创造待遇良好的就业机会，没能够保障我们的工人，没能够帮助美国人支付天价的学费，反而是降低了普通美国家庭的实际平均收入水平，加大了华尔街与普通民众的贫富差距，让我们的孩子背上了巨额的债务。

当麦凯恩承诺延续美国在伊拉克的政策时，这还不是变革。要知道，布什的对伊政策，只要求我们勇敢的战士们一味地付出，却从来不向伊拉克的政客们施压。这种政策的目标仅仅是要寻找继续这种政策的理由。尽管我们每个月都要支付数十亿美元的费用，美国人的安全感却丝毫没有增加。

所以我认为，描述麦凯恩试图掩盖他拥护布什政策的行为，可以有很多说法，比如“两党协作”或者“新颖”，但无论如何，肯定不是“变革”。

变革意味着我们的外交政策不能始于也不能终于一场从来不应被授权发动的战争。在这里我不想罔顾现实地宣称在伊拉克我们有多少个更好的选择，但可以确定的是，把我们的军队长久地留在那里绝对不是一个选择，尤其是在我们的军力过于分散、国家被孤立、其他所有威胁都被忽视的情况下。

尽管当初介入时是如此的草率，今天我们必须谨慎地撤出伊拉克，但撤退行动必须现在就开始。轮到伊拉克人对自己的未来负起责任来了，而我们必须重建我们的军事力量，优抚回国的战士们。我们必须把注意力重新转向基地组织和阿富汗，联合世界各国的力量来对付二十一世纪的共同威胁——恐怖主义、核武器扩散、气候变化、贫穷、种族屠杀和疾病。果真这样，才是变革。

变革意味着我们要意识到解决当今的威胁不能只靠武力，还有靠外交，坚定而直接的外交。它要求美利坚合众国的总统勇于向任何卑劣的独裁者表明我们的立场和信仰。我们必须重建领导自由世界的勇气和信念，这是罗斯福、杜鲁门和肯尼迪留给我们的遗产，是美国人的需要，是真正的变革。

变革意味着我们的经济不能只奖励富人和他们的财富，还要奖励工人和他们的辛苦工作，正是工人创造了那些财富。工薪家庭面临的经济问题靠更多地给大公司和CEO巨富们减税是解决不了的，而必须靠给中产阶级减税、投资改善我们的基础设施、改变能源使用方式、提高教育水平、鼓励科学创新来解决。变革意味着财政责任和共同繁荣可以共存，就像比尔·克林顿时期那样。

麦凯恩过去几周一直在炫耀他亲赴伊拉克的举动。如果他花些时间去看看那些经济受打击最严重的城镇，比如密歇根、俄亥俄还有明尼苏达这里的城镇，他大概就会理解美国民众需要的变革究竟是什么了。

如果他去爱奥瓦见到了那个在结束了一天课业之后还要上夜班却仍然支付不起她妹妹医疗费的学生，他大概就能理解，像她这样的美国人已经无法在只关注健康人和有钱人的医疗制度下继续生活四年。她需要我们的医疗制度能够覆盖到每一个急需的人并降低普通家庭的保险费用。这才是我们需要的变革。

如果他去宾夕法尼亚见到了那个丢了工作却因支付不起汽油费而无法开车去寻找新工作的男人，他大概就能理解，我们不能继续依赖独裁国家的石油。我们必须实施新的能源政策，与汽车制造商共同提高燃油标准，要求企业为污染埋

单，要求石油公司将利润投资到研发清洁能源。这样的能源政策将创造数百万个待遇良好、无法外包的新就业机会。这才是我们需要的变革。

如果他去看看南加利福尼亚州或圣保罗或他今晚发表演说的新奥尔良的学校，他就能理解，我们必须不遗余力地实施《有教无类法》。为了孩子，我们必须重视儿童早期教育，延聘一支新的教师队伍，给他们更好的待遇和更多的支持。要知道，在全球化时代，接受大学教育的机会不应是少数富人的特权，而应该是每一个美国人与生俱来的权利。这才是美国需要的变革，也是促使我竞选总统的理由。

9月份共和党将在这里召开全国代表大会，他们的政策和立场与我们非常不同。我期待着两党之间的辩论。美国人民需要这样一场辩论，但不希望又经历一场充斥着恐惧、影射和分裂的选举。在我的竞选运动或民主党这里，你们不会看到总拿宗教或爱国说事的伎俩，这些人不把对手当作竞争者来挑战，而是当作敌人来丑化。我的理由是，尽管我们分属民主党和共和党，但我们首先都是美国人，我们永远都首先是美国人。

不管来自亚利桑那州的亲爱的参议员先生怎么说，在我20多年参与公共事务的过程中，我看到过很多意见不同的人们为了共同的事业而走到一起，很多事情我自己也参与其中。我曾与芝加哥南部的社区领袖们共同奋斗，亲眼目睹了为争取良好的就业和教育条件而实现的黑人、白人、拉丁人之间的关系缓和。我曾与执法及民权支持者坐在一起，讨论改革一项将13个无辜的人判为死罪的刑事司法制度。我曾与共和党的友人一道致力于为更多儿童提供健康保险，为更多工薪家庭提供减税，制止核武器扩散，确保每一个美国人都了解他们税款的去向，以及减少游说组织的影响，他们在很多时候控制了华盛顿的议程。

在我们国家，我发现上述合作的出现不是因为我们在所有问题上都能达成一致，而是因为在规约着我们的各式各样的标签以及错误的分类背后，在华盛顿所有的卑劣和处心积虑背后，美利坚是一个高尚、慷慨、富有同情心的民族，一个在共同挑战和共同希冀面前团结一致的民族。惟其如此，我们这个国家才会逐渐变得强大。

惟其如此，二百年前的爱国者才会在费城独立厅宣布“一个更好的联邦”的诞生；惟其如此，在戈底斯堡和安提坦的战场上，人们才会拼尽最后一份力气来保卫这个联邦。

惟其如此，二战期间“最伟大的一代”美国人战胜了恐惧，将欧洲大陆从独裁中解放出来。正是这一代人，把美国变成了机遇与繁荣的乐园。

惟其如此，工人站了起来，以罢工相抵抗，妇女击碎了带有歧视性的就业“玻璃天花板”，儿童为了自由的事业勇敢面对塞尔玛桥对面的袭击。

惟其如此，一代又一代的美国人，他们努力应对各种巨大的挑战和各种不可思议的恶劣条件，努力为他们的孩子建造一个更完善、更仁爱、更正义的世界。

现在到了我们这样去做的时刻。

美利坚，这是我们的时刻，这是我们的时代。是时候翻过旧的一页，是时候使用新能源和新观念以应对挑战，是时候为我们的祖国开辟新的方向。

前路漫长而艰辛。在这样的挑战面前，我只能以最大的谦卑来应对。我依靠的不只是我个人有限的知识，更是对美利坚民族的无限信任。我相信，只要我们愿意为之努力奋斗，并坚定我们的信念，经年以后，当回首往事，我们一定可以跟我们的子孙这样讲述：在这一刻，我们实现病有所医、劳有所得；在这一刻，上升的海平面开始回落，地球开始康复；在这一刻，无谓的战争已结束，美国的安全得到保障，美国作为世界上最后也是最好的希冀的形象，得以重建。在这一刻——在这个时代——人们又团结在一起，重建这个伟大的民族，那里有最好的我们和我们最高的理想。谢谢你们，愿上帝保佑你们，愿上帝保佑美利坚合众国！

作为伟大的伊利诺斯州——全国的交通枢纽，林肯的故乡——的代表，我为有向此次大会致辞的机会而深感荣幸。今晚于我而言是一份特殊的荣耀。我们得承认，我出现在这个讲坛上是件不可思议的事。我的父亲是个外国留学生，在肯尼亚的一个小村庄出生并长大，他幼时牧羊，在铁皮顶做成的简陋小屋里上学。他的父亲，我的祖父，是个厨师，一个佣人。

但我祖父对他的儿子有更大的梦想。艰辛的努力和顽强的毅力使父亲拿到了到美国留学的奖学金。美国是一片神奇的国土，它对于许多未曾来过的人而言是自由和机会的象征。在留学期间，父亲遇到了母亲。她出生在世界另一端的堪萨斯的一个小镇上。她父亲在大萧条时期为了养家糊口，不是在石油钻塔下打工，就是在农场务农。珍珠港事件后他自愿入伍，进入巴顿的部队，曾在整个欧洲大陆辗转作战。在后方家中，外祖母养育着他们的孩子，并在一条轰炸机流水线上工作。战后，他们研究了士兵福利法案，通过联邦住宅管理局买了一套房子，并移居到西部寻找机会。

On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln, let me express my deep gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention.Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely.My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya.He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack.His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic servant.But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son.Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place: America, which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.While studying here, my father met my mother.She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas.Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression.The day after Pearl Harbor he signed up for duty, joined Patton's army and marched across Europe.Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line.After the war, they studied on the GI Bill, bought a house through FHA, and moved west in search of opportunity.And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter, a common dream, born of two continents.My parents shared not only an improbable love;they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation.They would give me an African name, Barack, or “blessed,” believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success.They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential.They are both passed away now.Yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with pride.I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my precious daughters.I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy.Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago, “We hold these truths to he self-evident, that all men are created equal.That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles.That we can tuck in our children at night and know they are fed and clothed and safe from harm.That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door.That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe or hiring somebody's son.That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will he countedDemocrats, Republicans, IndependentsI am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeperthere's the United States of America.There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America;there's the United States of America.The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States;Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats.But I've got news for them, too.We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States.We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States.There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it.We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.In the end, that's what this election is about.Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope.John Edwards calls on us to hope.I'm not talking about blind optimism hereif we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November, and John Kerry will be sworn in as president, and John Edwards will be sworn in as vice president, and this country will reclaim its promise, and out of this long political darkness a brighter day will come.Thank you and God bless you.
