马斯洛的需要层次理论认为人到了青少年初期，尊重的需要日渐强烈。一般来说，低层次的需求若得不到满足，就会妨碍高层次需求的形成，越是接近需求序列顶端的需求，越是难以得到满足。当学生的需求在现实世界中得不到满足时，而虚拟世界又给予他们及时的需求满足时，他们便从网络游戏中获得一定程度的奖励和满足。根据霍曼斯的交换原理，当一个人某种行动得到的报酬越经常，这个人就越愿意从事这种行动，因此，他就会越倾向于继续玩网络游戏，通过游戏寻求高层次的需求满足。当他们成为某项游戏的高手时，可以获得其他同伴的尊重，尽情享受征服游戏后所获取的成就感的满足。由此可见，网络游戏可以提供现实世界一时无法获得的尊重感和自我实现的需求。在现实世界中，随着竞争的日益激烈，成功的获取越来越难，尤其是学习比较差的学生，因为在学习上不占优势，得不到他人的尊重，尊重的需要得不到满足，而网络游戏则提供了一个给他当英雄的机会（因为许多网络游戏都是以英雄为主题的），于是，他们便乐之不疲，找回在现实中得不到的成就感和受尊重感。在网络虚拟世界暂时逃避学习中的压力。
