That’s $500 more than he offered me.He must have been getting desperate. What I hear is that Harry has a gambling problem. He probably wanted some of the money to pay off a debt and the rest to put down on a new bet.Sorry I couldn’t warn you in time.Well, what’s done is done. There’s always a chance his luck will turn and he really will make a fortune.I hope so, for your sake.

September 17, 2005 Dear Richard, Long time no see.I hope all is well with you.I understand Harry recently asked you to lend him some money but you turned him down.I know, because he wrote me and asked to borrow the money from me.I lent it to him, but with some misgivings because it was a pretty large sum.I’ll admit his promise of an interest payment of $2,500
helped persuade me.He said you told him you couldn’t afford to lend him the money, but he didn’t seem convinced.I have to say I find it hard to believe, too, because I know you are as well off as I am, if not more so.But perhaps you had some other reason for not wanting to lend him anything. If you have reason to believe I may not get my money
back, by all means let me know.

February 28, 2005 Dear Joyce, I just arrived in New Delhi yesterday.During my last week in Nepal, I went to a town west of Katmandu which is very close to the Himalayas. It’s really incredible to be able to walk out of a hotel in the morning and see snow-covered, 25,000-foot high mountains.I can’t imagine what it would be like to climb one!
As I just mentioned, I flew into India yesterday.I haven’t had much time to look around yet, but one first impression I got was that this is a really crowded place. It’s not hard to believe that there are over a billion people in this country. This morning I went to the big mosque and fort in Old Delhi. They are pretty impressive. They had some great architects in those days.I’ll be in India for two weeks, and then I’ll fly back to Bangkok.I’m looking forward to picking up your letter(s).Sincerely, Vincent

August 20, 2005 Dear Yulin, Here I am in America!Everything is so big and spread out.The streets seem empty because they are so wide.Los Angeles is a huge city in terms of area;it takes forever to drive from one side to the other. But it’s not nearly as crowded as Taipei.Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to get around without a car, so it’s no wonder there is a lot of smog. The people I have met so far have been very friendly, though I get really nervous talking to them.I don’t feel like my English is good enough yet.Everyone talks so fast!I hope I can get used to it.My host family is very nice to me.I’ll probably feel homesick after I’ve been here longer, but right now I’m too excited.

February 18, 2005 Dear Joyce, As you can see from the postmark, I’m now in Nepal.Katmandu is a really cool place. There are a lot of narrow, winding streets, ancient temples, and even cows wandering around. It’s like I’ve gone back in time.Of course, even here they have cars and Coca-Cola, but a lot of things don’t seem to have changed in centuries. The people are interesting, too.Since Nepal is a poor country, it’s not surprising that there are a lot of beggars. There are also holy men called sadhus who wear colorful clothes and wander about asking for alms. The other day I spent an hour sitting on the steps of a temple watching people pass by.My next stop is India.I’ll write you from there in a week or two.
