This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day focuses on “Gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing to women”.Although fewer than 1 out of 10 women are smokers, that still adds up to an estimated 200 million women around the world. Moreover, that number could grow, since the tobacco industry is spending heavily on advertisements that target women and associate tobacco use with beauty and liberation.According to a recent study by the World Health Organization(WHO), the number of girls and boys who smoked was about equal in half the 151 countries surveyed. This finding is even more worrisome since young people who smoke are likely to continue in adulthood.Evidence indicates that the prevalence rate of tobacco use among women is on the rise in some countries.Governments everywhere must take action to protect women from tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, as stipulated in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Convention also calls on Governments to protect women from second-hand tobacco smoke — especially in countries where women feel powerless to protect themselves and their children. As WHO data show, of the 430,000 adults who die each year from second-hand smoke, nearly two thirds are women.Around the world, more than 1.5 million women die each year from tobacco use. Most of these deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries.Without concerted action, that number could rise to 2.5 million women by the year 2030.We must turn back the global tobacco epidemic. On World No Tobacco Day, I urge all Governments to address this public health threat.Tobacco use is not stylish or empowering. It is ugly and deadly.

关于世界无烟日的英语作文:

I attended Jack's birthday party tonight. After dinner, Jack gave cigarets to our boy students present. At the important moment, I stop them ant told them the bad effects of smoking: firstly Smoking is a waste of money and it's greatly harmful to our health. And it can lead to fires easily. So we should not smoke at all.But it seemed helpless and they wouldn't listen to me.Somebody even said that body and health belonged to themselves and it's up to them to decide whether to smoke or not.I told him calmly, Even if you have the right to harm your own body, but it doesn't mean that you have the same right to harm others'.At last, they agreed with me, and some students said that they would never smoke any longer. For the next one hour, we danced and sang happily, and nobody did smoke again.I felt very happy that my classmate all understood the harmness of smoking.

Organization(WHO)is a specialised United Nations agency which acts as a coordinator and researcher for public health around the world.Established on 7 April 1948, and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the agency inherited the mandate and resources of its predecessor, the Health Organization, which had been an agency of the League of Nations. The WHO's constitution states that its mission is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Its major task is to combat disease, especially key infectious diseases, and to promote the general health of the peoples of the world.Examples of its work include years of fighting smallpox. In 1979 the WHO declared that the disease had been eradicated-the first disease in history to be completely eliminated by deliberate human design. The WHO is nearing success in developing vaccines against malaria and schistosomiasis and aims to eradicate polio

World No Tobacco Day

高二(4)班 刘玲

Good morning, everyone.Today, I want to share with you something I know about a special day “World No Tobacco Day”.Since the 1950s, the globe has had a large number of studies to confirm that smoking is one of the leading risk factors of lung cancer. In order to cause the attention of the international community for tobacco harm to people’s health, the world health organization set“World No Tobacco Day”on April 7 every year. One year later, it performed.Since 1989,the World No Tobacco Day has changed to May 31st of each year.It has been estimated that smokers are becoming younger and younger, even including some middle school students.According to a recent study by the World Health Organization, the number of girls and boys who smoked was about equal in half of the 151 countries surveyed. The finding is even more worrisome since young people who smoke are likely to continue in adulthood.Nowadays, more and more people have realized smoking can do harm to people’s health. However, some people still enjoy smoking, why? Because some of them think it is a kind of fashion. Some think it is of great fun and others believe that smoking can refresh themselves. In fact, smoking is a bad habit and it can cause a lot of diseases.Meanwhile smoking is a waste of money.Besides, careless smokers may cause dangerous fires.Smoking is not only bad for themselves, but also bad for non-smokers.As WHO data shows, there are 430,000 adults who die each year from second-hand smoke. We must turn back the global tobacco epidemic.Tomorrow is World No Tobacco Day, I urge all of us to pay attention to this public health threat.Tobacco use is not stylish or empowering. It is ugly and deadly. That’s all. Thanks for your listening.世界无烟日英语作文
