担任学生干部是很多同学曾有过的经历，有很多同学表达了这样的困惑：在学习和学生干部之间，读书和社团之间，如何取得平衡而不顾此失彼。也有人会问，做学生干部会不会给未来的工作实践增加砝码。一个曾经在中学时代做过学生干部，到了大学用了更多的时间来学习却感到寂寞失落的大学生曾经写信给我，来问这样的问题。

针对这个问题，我想先讲两个现实生活中的故事。

我认识一个男孩子，他在中学的时候，由于显得比同龄人更成熟，所以顺理成章地当上了班长和学生会主席，成为同学中的领导者。老师特别信任、宠爱他，让他组织各种学生活动，并且给予他别人所都没有的“特权”。他能够用成年人的方式跟老师交谈，并且站在老师的角度看待问题和处理问题。他成绩中等，但就算是不喜欢他身上浓厚官气的同学也不得不佩服他的组织能力。高考之后，他进了一所很一般的大学。他沮丧地发现，大学生活与他的期望相去甚远，中学时他得到的重视和特权一去不返。由于他的能力特长似乎局限在一个狭窄的领域内，而且一定要在得到赞赏的顺境中才能发挥，因此，他没能迅速从众多同学中脱颖而出，最后，他心理彻底崩溃，不得不休学回家。

第二个故事的主角是法国人。二战爆发后，在希特勒的凌厉攻势下，法国很快沦陷，一个很有潜质的学者中断研究工作去参军。然而，不幸的是，他在二战之初就被纳粹俘虏，关进德国监狱。他钟爱的研究生涯和平静优裕的生活仿佛已经成为另一个世界的记忆。最为恐怖的是，在苏联红军攻破柏林之前，没人知道纳粹会对盟国战俘干些什么。狱中5年，暗无天日，命悬一线，直到1945年德国战败，他才获救。在人类理智遭到法西斯主义的挑战时，他在狱中以一种特别的方式度过他本人和整个世界的这场滔天苦难：在德国监狱的可怕条件下，他奇迹般地写完了巨著《The Mediterranan and the Mditerranean World in the age of Philip II》的大部分篇幅，他后来说，这是“a direct existential response to the tragic times I was passing though”。这个人的名字叫布罗代尔（Fernand Braudel），后来成为法国最优秀的历史学家，年鉴学派的巨擘，他的贡献甚至影响到今天的中国学界。对比两个故事中的人物在危机中的不同表现，你可以看到：在遭遇重大危机的时候，一个人如果有丰富的精神资源，他就能以勇气、智慧和坚韧度过最严峻的关头；相反，一个心灵贫乏的人，最普通的命运起伏也可以摧毁他的精神支柱。

然而，人非生而知之，必待学而知之，丰富的精神资源是要靠自己去学习和领悟才能得到的。我觉得，做学生干部的目的应该是为了培养能力，千万不能把它当作一种权力。在中国这样一个有几千年官本位传统的国家，权力无孔不入地侵入到社会的每一寸空间，学生难免会受到成人社会的一些影响。然而成人社会中的权力在控制受众的同时，也扭曲掌权者自身，享受权力的快感为控制者提供了一种虚假的成就感，一旦失去权力，已经变得贫乏的内心就失去支撑，不得不面对巨大的失落感。学生干部中既有品学兼优的好学生，也有受成人社会权力模式影响的小“职业革命家”。个中分寸如何把握，全在一个人是否具备健全的、坚强的人格。如果你能看到，学生干部这个角色不是意味着权力，而是服务，那么无论你做不做学生干部，服务的机会永远会有。若打算采取个人方式，则帮助身边任何遇到困难的人都可算在内；若依附于某个组织，也有很多民间的、自发的公益志愿活动，同样既可以锻炼自己又济人危难。的确，有种观念是把做不做学生干部、做多高级别的学生干部当作衡量一个学生是不是优秀的标准之一，我认为这是今天这个价值失范的社会最流行的荒唐见解之一。无论“入世”或“出世”，只要是自己喜欢的生活方式，也都可以成就精彩的人生。那么，成长中应该追寻的是什么呢？这个问题已经有无数答案，而我最喜欢的答案，来自傅雷先生的描述，那就是：做一个“又热烈又恬静，又深刻又朴素，又温柔又高傲，又微妙又率直”的人。至于对未来工作可能的影响，政府机构或者国企可能对学生党员或学生干部比较看重一些，而外企或者民营企业就看得比较淡一点。如果你的理想是从政，那在现有制度下必须入党；否则，我觉得大可不必把入党看得太重。做一个正直的人、学会为人处世、掌握过硬的技术和很强的能力，这些都更能够成为你将来在社会上立于不败之地的硬件资本。至于做学生干部，确实能够锻炼一下你的组织和交际能力，但是我认为这在你的大学生活中无需占据第一位，前提必须是不影响学习。
