Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers hypothesized.Faceless, bodiless “virtual” communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower.Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology;it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors.“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

Section B
Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)and D).You should decide on the best choice.Passage One
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Increasingly, over the past ten years, people ― especially young people ― have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly chemical foods, is not good for health.Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers, widely used in farming today.Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruits and grains which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount ― but not the quality ― of foods grown in commercial farming areas.Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures.Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish.Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food;they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet.Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food!Although a natural alternative, such as honey, can be used to sweeten food if this is necessary, we can in fact do without it.It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But it does seem to be an additive: the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year!Yet all it does is provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals and no fiber. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet.In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removed. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare.Hence the emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on healthy eating.31.Recently, some people are interested in natural foods because ______.A)natural foods are fresh and cheap
B)they don’t like processed foods
C)they want to change their eating habits
D)these foods contain more vitamins, mineral and fiber etc.正确答案: D
32.According to the passage, what does the word “battery”(Para.3)mean? ______

Passage Two
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Nowadays, more and more people are using e-mail to say a few nice words to each other. The result: a new culture of love-letter writing has evolved and is rewriting the rules in how we express our love.Make no mistake: in many cases the e-mail love letters significantly resemble their ancestor. The verbal imagery has hardly changed.Experts believe, in fact, that far more people now carry out sweet talk in cyberspace than in the time before e-mail came along. When people communicate over e-mail, everything is much more relaxed, less serious, and this helps the sweet words flow.Nicola Doering, a media researcher, emphasizes that for many people contact over e-mail is simpler: “The language is a different one here than in traditional letters;people tend to write more like they speak.” This means that an e-mail writer might not have to think over every word, as is often expected with traditional love letter. This is obviously encouraging for many people. But for longer, particularly romantic love letter, e-mail writers also reach back into the language of poetry, “Your calf-blue eyes” is typical for the kind of phrasings found in e-mail love letters. Moreover, at least one traditional symbol between lovers has made an outstanding comeback.Even in the love letters of the 19th century, one often found the letter X as a symbol of a kiss. Many paper love letters would have three X’s at the bottom as a closing. And this symbol is often used today between lovers in their e-mail messages. In spite of all the technological advancement that e-mail represents, classic love letters on paper still have a special meaning, the experts say.Ink on paper simply affects many people more strongly than lines on a computer screen. It appears more serious, more obligatory, as if written for all eternity.Sometimes people want to have something to touch, a letter that you can really hold in your hand. But Internet technology is ready to help even those with the courage to write a classic handwritten love letter. What stops many lovers from penning their most romantic thought is not a lack of good intention but an inability to piece together a few sweet lines, says Thomas Neuss, the organizer of one Internet site devoted to romantic letters.36.The author strongly believes that ______.A)e-mail love letters are more significant than traditional ones

Section B
Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)and D).You should decide on the best choice.Passage One
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job.The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 percent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits.Of course, some job sharers take a smaller or larger share of the responsibilities of the position, receiving a lesser or greater share of the benefits.Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people.Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems;its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, women constitute the bulk of job sharers.A survey carded out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission revealed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age.Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status.Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones.In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.31.“Employee commitment” in Paragraph 2 refers to the employee’s ________.A)loyalty

Passage Two
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. If you were to examine the birth certificates of every soccer player in 2006’s World Cup tournament you would most likely find a noteworthy quirk: elite soccer players are more likely to have been born in the earlier months of the year than the later months. If you then examined the European national youth teams that feed the World Cup and professional ranks, you would find this strange phenomenon to be even more pronounced. What might account for this strange phenomenon? Here are a few guesses:a)certain astrological signs confer superior soccer skills.b)winter-born babies tend to have higher oxygen capacity which increases soccer stamina.c)soccer mad parents are more likely to conceive children in springtime at the annual peak of soccer mania.d)none of the above.Anders Ericsson, a 58-year-old psychology professor at Florida State University, says he believes strongly in “none of the above.” Ericsson grew up in Sweden, and studied nuclear engineering until he realized he would have more opportunity to conduct his own research if he switched to psychology. His first experiment nearly years ago, involved memory: training a person to hear and then repeat a random series of numbers.“With the first subject, after about 20 hours of training his digit span had risen from 7 to 20,” Ericsson recalls.“He kept improving, and after about 200 hours of training he had risen to over 80 numbers.”
This success coupled with later research showing that memory itself was not genetically determined, led Ericsson to conclude that the act of memorizing is more of a cognitive exercise than an intuitive one.In other words, whatever inborn differences two people may exhibit in their abilities to memorize those differences are swamped by how well each person “encodes” the information. And the best way to learn how to encode information meaningfully, Ericsson determined, was a process known as deliberate practice.Deliberate practice entails more than simply repeating a task.Rather, it involves setting specific goals, obtaining immediate feedback and concentrating as much on technique as on outcome.Ericsson and his colleagues have thus taken to studying expert performers in a wide range of pursuits, including soccer. They gather all the data they can, not just predominance statistics and biographical details but also the results of their own lavatory experiments with high achievers.Their work makes a rather startling assertion: the trait we commonly call talent is highly overrated.Or, put another way, expert performers whether in memory or surgery, ballet or computer programming are nearly always made, not born.36.The birthday phenomenon found among soccer players is mentioned to _____.A)emphasize the significance of professional training
B)spotlight the soccer superstars in the World Cup
C)introduce the topic of what makes expert performance
D)state the importance of gifts in playing soccer

Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)and D).You should decide on the best choice.Passage One
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. How we look and how we appear to others probably worries us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life.Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion. Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment.Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress.A barber today does not cut a boy's hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did.The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull. What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion.Take hats for example. In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men have followed example. There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World War Ⅱ, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter until the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be.It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else.Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashions of the top fashion houses. At the same time, appearance is still important in certain circumstances and then we must choose our clothes carefully. It would be foolish to go to an interview for a job in a law firm wearing jeans and a sweater;and it would be discourteous to visit some distinguished scholar looking as if we were going to the beach or a night club. However, you need never feel depressed if you don't look like the latest fashion photo.Look around you and you'll see that no one else does either!

Passage Two
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Research on friendship has established a number of facts, some interesting, some even useful.Did you know that the average student has 5-6 friends, or that a friend who was previously an enemy is like more than one who has always been on the right side? Would you believe that physically attractive individuals are preferred as friends to those less comely, and is it fair that physically attractive defendants are less likely to be found guilty in court? Unfortunately, such titbits don’t tell us much more about the nature or the purpose of friendship. In fact, studies of friendship seem to implicate more complex factors. For example, one function friendship seems to fulfill is that it supports the image we have of ourselves, and confirms the value of the attitudes we hold.Certainly we appear to project ourselves onto our friends;several studies have shown that we judge them to be more like us than they(objectively)are. This suggests that we ought to choose friends who are similar to us rather than those who would be complementary. There have also been studies of pairings, both voluntary(married couples)and forced(student roommates), to see which remained together and which split up.Again, the evidence seems to favor similarity rather than complementarity as an omen of a successful relationship, though there is a complication: where marriage is concerned, once the field has been narrowed down to potential mates who come from similar backgrounds and share a broad range of attitudes and values, a degree of complementarity seems to become desirab1e.When a couple are not just similar but almost identical, something else seems to be needed.Simi1arity can breed contempt, it has also been found that when we find others obnoxious(可憎的), we dislike them more if they are like us than when they are dissimilar!
The difficulty of linking friendship with similarity of personality probably reflects the complexity of our personalities: we have many facets and therefore require a disparate(迥然不同的)group of friends to support us.This of course can explain why we may have two close friends who have little in common, and indeed dislike each other.By and large, though, it looks as though we would do well to choose friends(and spouses)who resemble us.If this were not so, computer dating agencies would have gone out of business years ago.36.Research on friendship has demonstrated that______.A)every student has five or six friends
B)judges are always influenced by a pretty face
C)ugly people find it harder to make friends than beautiful people
D)we tend to grow fond of people if we dislike them at first sight

B)insist on them having similar attitudes to ourselves
C)think they resemble us more than they really do
D)tend to choose those complementary to us in personality.正确答案: C
38.Studies of marriage relationships indicate that______.A)exactly the same bases for success apply as for ordinary friendships
B)it is first of all necessary to limit prospective partners to people from similar backgrounds
C)opposites get on better than similar personalities
D)the most successful are those between people who are alike but not exactly the same
正确答案: D
39.Why can two people who have different attitudes towards religion, ethics and aesthetics sometimes become good friends?

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label “Legless Man”.Histories of the time will go something like this: “in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs.Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts and escalators in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. The surprising thing is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were marred by the presence of large car parks.”
The future history books might also record that we were deprived of the use of our eyes.In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way.Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world ― or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train a blurred image of the countryside constantly smears the windows. And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: “I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says “I’ve been there.” You mention the remotest, most evocative place and someone is bound to say “I’ve been there” ― meaning, “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place.By traveling like this, you suspend all experience;the present ceases to be a reality: you might just as well be dead. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body.At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness. He knows that sound.Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.31.Nowadays, anthropologists tend to label men “Legless” because ________.A)people forget how to use his legs

Passage Two
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you’d expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world.Superb systems of communication make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the “grand tour”, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp? The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at.Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of.But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other?
Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life.He lives at international hotels, where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance.Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more.A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own;and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way.At its very worst, this leads to a new and hideous kind of colonization. The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are.You can test this for yourself.Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native.Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, “Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites” of that “Latin peoples shout a lot”.You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are.But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?
