众所周知，英语己成为当前名副其实的全球通用语。在全世界60多亿人口中，大约3.8亿人的母语是英语；大约2.5亿人的第二语言是英语：大约10亿人在学英语，20亿人在接触英语。根据戴维•克里斯托（David Crystal）的预测，在不久的将来，世界一半人口每天会说或会使用英语。除此以外，英语还是绝大多数国际机构和组织的工作语言，以英语为官方语言或通用语的国家有70多个，有100多个国家选择英语作为优先学习的外语，能以不同形式使用英语的人已接近16亿，包括中国、埃及、日本、韩国等国也都不同程度地出现了“英语热”。全世界讲英语的人中，非母语者与母语者的比例已经达到了3: 1。这是一个前所未有的神话！而为了顺应时代的发展，英语已成为一门必修课。
