这部小说是专门写鬼的，非常可怕，非常恐怖（但是，文章的作者说，愿这个鬼，没有人想要驱除它）小说中的主人公斯克虏骑经常被吓得跪在地上哆嗦。

小说中的主人公斯克虏骑是个死不松手的吝啬鬼，一个巧取豪夺，能搜善刮，贪得无厌的老黑心。他孤身一人，冷酷刻薄，他不许他的雇员在圣诞节休假，天气再冷也不许雇员在炉火里加煤。他认为圣诞节是胡闹。孩子们在圣诞节到他家献唱圣诞歌曲，他拿起戒尺，动作极其迅猛的吓跑了孩子。按照西方人的习惯，平安夜有慈善机构请求赞助，他一分没给，还说了一大堆不中听的话。

我想事先说明一下，主人公斯克虏骑所以是这样的人，跟他从小生长在一个没有爱的家庭有关系。他的父亲不太仁慈，曾经把它赶出家门。他孤零零的，他没有朋友，可怜巴巴，他好像被人遗忘。少年的斯克虏骑害怕世人，他怕遭受世人苛刻的指责。这可能对他性格的形成有直接的关系。
