Nowadays, many people have a misunderstanding that being a teacher is very easy, and some of them even think that anyone can be a good teacher if they want.In fact, teaching is not so easy as most people think, and a good teacher requires many more qualities than the ordinary people.It is clear that whether a person is able to become a good English teacher does not solely depend on the command of the language, as it is only one aspect of the qualities a good English teacher should have.Then what makes a good English teacher? There are a variety of elements that contribute to the qualities of a good English teacher, which can be categorized into three aspects: ethic devotion, personal style, and more importantly, the professional qualities.These three aspects constitute the professional competence of a good English teacher.Firstly, a good teacher should have ethic devotion.The teacher should be a model and set a good example to his students because most students would be influenced by their teacher’s behavior unconsciously.So a good teacher should have high moral quality, and should show their moral qualities as well as their knowledge.More importantly, they should help students form good moral qualites.On one hand, a

good teacher should be good-mannered and well dressed;he

should comply with the law and behave himself;on the other

hand, a good teacher should love his students.To be specific, a

good teacher should be fair to their children, and treats every

student equally, and “partiality” is forbidden;he should be

patient, and never give up any student, even though some of the

them are really mischievous and indocile;he should be kind, and

be ready to help his students;he should be enthusiastic to his

students, and has a full passion for his teaching;he should be

caring for the students, sometimes, only a caring look , a trusting

encouragement, or a mild smile from the teacher is enough to

touch the students’ hearts.We should recognize the great value

of the teachers who have ethic devotion during the students’

development.Secondly, a good teacher should have personal styles.A

good teacher makes learning not a dull thing but a great joy.Many teachers make their teaching boring because they just

keep talking about the text book all the time as the teachers

usually did in the past, just like a loud speaker, then the students

would feel difficult to focus their attentions on what the teacher

are saying.Then we find it’s important to form a distinct

personal style during our teaching.Different teacher should have

different styles, and a good teacher should find his own personal

style which is diffent from the others.For example, we can

make our teaching dynamic by body languages, or

demonstrating performance;we can make our teaching vivid by

role plays;we can make our teaching interesting by explaining it

in a humorous way.It’s important to find our personal styles

when we are teaching.Last but not least, a good teacher should have professional

qualities.A good teacher should have teaching faculty, and

should acquire enough knowledge.That knowledge doesn’t only

mean our command of English, but also our teaching skills,strategies, and abilities.A good teacher should be reflective: he

should keep on reflecting on his classes and his methods of

teaching, and in this way he could make progress quickly;a

good teacher should be resourceful, and have a quick response

to the emergency;a good teacher should be creative: teach in a

creative way, and encourage his students to be creative and

open-minded;a good teacher should make his teaching colorful:

he can take advantage of different kinds of mediums, such us

recorder, pictures, video and so on.In order to get the

professional qualities, the teachers should also acquire a wide

knowledge of philosophy psychology, and education(how to

teach)besides the professional knowledge in his own field.After

acquired these knowledge, the teachers need to practice and get

experience about teaching, which is called the experiential

knowledge(others’ or one’s own), and after a long period of

practice and reflection, the teacher would be able to gain

professional qualities.In addition, a good teacher should be a

life-long learner, and make sure that he keeps improving himself

in his professional field;he should always test himself by the

feedback from his students, and reflect on his work.As the society develops at an amazing speed now, the

students today are quite different: they are more independent,and demand a higher standard for teachers, which is a challenge

for us.So we should try our best to improve ourselves, and try to
