Oliver Twist

(by Charles Dickens)

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens', is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings.I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill.To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end.How can such a little boy who had already suffered

oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.

第二篇:雾都孤儿 英文读后感

As we all known , Oliver Twist is the world's masterpiece by prominent British author Charles Dickens. Thus , I spent a month reading it.When I finished this book, I could not calm the mood for a long time. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, whose mother was died after giving birth to him.So he was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings and felt for the poor boy.In addition , the charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really what we need in life. They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rain from the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply.Mr.Brownlow is one such person. He known Oliver Twist by accident, although there were many things happening between them ,dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later.Without hesitation, he took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil. What Mr.Brownlow did taught us a lesson , just as the old saying went , “To error is human;to forgive divine.”, Therefore, we ought to give people a second chance no matter what they might have done. That’s also a substantial part of loving and caring others.Mrs.Maylie ,Miss Rose and Nancy are also these kind of people , who are Oliver’s other

benefactors. In the novel, though the young Oliver again and again fell for conspiracies of those hideous thieves, who tried to torture Oliver’s body and poisoned Oliver’s heart intensely, he always lived on and tried hard to seek for his own life. Then I realized what supported him all through were actually beliefs. In most cases, what you believe is what you’ll become.Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs and that is how you ultimately control your life. It’s all dictated by your attitude. There is no doubt that we should learn form Oliver , no matter what we meet , we can’t give up.What’s more ,we must believe in that the goodness eventually can conquer devil. All in all , Oliver Twist is well worth reading.

Book Report

Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. The People’s Literature Publishing House,1999.Oliver Twist is a story by Charles Dickens that takes place in the middle of the 19th century. It the story of a young orphan named Oliver Twist. His mother died while giving birth in an old workhouse. He has moved around through different orphanages and finally runs away to the streets of London. On the way to London he meets a nice boy named Jack Dawkins, also known as the Dodger. The Dodger gave the poor orphan a place to stay and something to eat and drink.Oliver found out that his new “friends” were thieves and they forced Oliver to help them with a robbery. They were supposed to use Oliver to sneak into a house through a small opening and unlock the front door. The owners were awakened and Oliver got shot.Oliver's partners in crime fled the scene.Oliver told the owners of the house his story and they took him as their own.Oliver grew attached. The family educated him and put him to work a little. At the end of the story an old friend named Mr.Brownlow adopted him.One theme in Oliver Twist is to know your friends better. In this book Oliver met a boy named Jack Dawkins. He seemed like a nice boy and offered Oliver some food and a place to stay.Oliver got to be friends with Jack Dawkins and his friend named Charlie Bates. One day they were “going to work” when all of the sudden Jack and Charlie stole a handkerchief from an old man.The two boys were thieves! They ran away and left Oliver in the alley. When the old man realized that his handkerchief was missing he though Oliver did it.The old man started to chase Oliver and yelled out “Stop thief!Stop thief!” Jack Dawkins and Charlie Bates joined in the chase so that they did not look suspicious. They no sooner heard the cry, and saw Oliver running, than, guessing exactly how the matter stood, they issued forth with great promptitude;and, shouting 'Stop thief!' too, joined in the pursuit like good citizens. If Oliver noticed that the young boys were thieves he would not have been arrested and he would not have eventually been shot in the arm. But, because he was in need of a friend he seemed to over look the fact that the kids were thieves.Later in the story Nancy, a prostitute, betrayed her friends and her lover. She tried to warn Oliver's friends of Mr.Monks

plans.Bill Sikes her lover and colleague trusted her not to tell what went on inside the house. If he could only tell that she had a change in heart he would not have had to kill her and she wouldn't have been able to tell Oliver's friends Mr.Monks plans and where Bill Sikes. If she didn't tell Oliver's friends where Bill Sikes lived he would not have had the police after him and he would not have accidentally killed himself. So if people just knew their friends better it would have saved many people's lives and the story would have turned out different.Another theme in Oliver Twist is the friendliness of strangers.Throughout the story pure strangers were treating Oliver nicely. When Oliver was walking to London a nice boy offered Oliver a place to stay and some foodto eat.“I've got to be in London tonight;and I know a 'spectable old gentleman as loves there, wot'll give you lodging for nothink, and never ask for the change-” Even though the nice young man turned out to be a thief and was recruiting Oliver as a pickpocket, he was still being very nice.Later in the story Oliver was forced to rob a house and the owners of the house were woken up during the robbery and Oliver was shot in the arm.The owners of the house listened to Oliver and he told them that he was forced to rob their house and they took him in and cared for him. They nursed him to optimum health and they also educated him and he helped them out by doing errands in return. They also drove Oliver a full days ride to the town where Mr.Brownlow lived just to visit him.Nancy also helped out Oliver and died while in the helping process. She warned Oliver's friends about Mr.Monks plans and Bill Sikes found out and killed her.“It was a ghastly figure to look upon. The murderer staggering backward to the wall, and shutting out the sight with his hand, seized a heavy club and struck her down.” Oliver was a very lucky boy to have so many strangers that were willing to help him out.How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mild? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information imlied in the novel by Dickens. He believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to

money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest. That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.Oliver was unlucky in the beginning of the book.Everyone he met was treating him unfairly.People were getting paid to take him away from the orphanage. He also got in trouble for something he didn't even do.But some of the times it all turns out well just like it did for Oliver.Everyone that was mean to him either died or got in trouble. And maybe that is why we say good people always get the best.

第四篇:雾都孤儿 英文 读后感

Oliver Twist byCharles Dickens-1-

The Incorruptibility of Natural Goodness

——On The Characters of Oliver and Nancy in Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens provides insight into the experience of the poor in 1830s England.Beneath the novel’s raucous humor and flights of fancy runs an undertone of bitter criticism of the Victorian middle class's attitudes toward the poor.Oliver Twist is the leading character who is the victim of the hypocrisy and venality of capitalism and fallen Charitable Institution of 1830s England. There are different opinions among people as to whether human beings are born with goodness or the opposite, sin.According to Charles Dickens, man is born an angel and what's more, natural goodness is incorruptible. The Characters of Oliver and Nancy in Oliver Twist are typical examples.First of all, Oliver Twist is incorruptible although trapped in the terrible circumstances. On the one hand, what he did could account for this tip.Oliver is an orphan living in a hypocritical workhouse from his birth.Because he can’t stand the terrible conditions in the workhouse, he escapes to London where he is trapped by Fagin who tries and teaches him to be a thief.Though treated with cruelty and surrounded by filthiness, he is still innocent and gentle. On the other hand, unlike those juvenile delinquents who talk with broken English, Oliver speaks Standard English without being polluted by the coarse surroundings. The character Nancy is another typical example.“Remarkably free and agreeable”, she is quite contradictory.Nancy is a fallen woman, to be specific, she is a prostitute. At first, when she helps Fagin and recaptures Oliver, I hold the opinion that she and those thieves are birds of a feather. But later I found I was too hasty about rushing to such a conclusion. After Nancy overhears Monks' telling Fagin his plans to destroy Oliver, she gives the secret away to Rose at the cost of her own life.In this novel, her final decision to protect Oliver reminds me of an old saying in ancient China by Mencius: human nature is good, so everyone has compassion and everyone can be emperor Yao and Shun. But how to explain that there are someone “evil”, such as Fagin and Monks who tries to kill Oliver and get a large sum of heritage compared with Oliver and Nancy who are born with incorruptible goodness? To this point, the author Charles Dickens has been criticized by many readers.I have researched many materials of Dickens's opinion about man is born with incorruptible goodness or not.To my surprise, he claimed that a corrupt environment is the source of vice. But in this novel, I find that although surrounded by evil circumstances, Oliver is compassionate and innocent all the time.So obviously, Oliver's incorruptibility undermines some of Dickens's argumentation.Oliver Twist byCharles Dickens-2-

From my point of view, goodness is a relative concept.A person who is kind and good to his relatives may seem evil from others' prospects.Because until now we have not enough stuff to support all of the people in the world. The law of survival of the fittest in natural selection and the unfairness in social system account for the “wickedness”.This also can explain the reason why some crimes seem understandable.Who is supposed to be responsible for the strange phenomenon? In Oliver Twist, the hypocritical capitalism and fallen Charitable Institution are the answers.Apart from the controversy, still I have learned much from the two characters, the main two points can be listed as follows:

For one thing, we should believe in the goodness of human beings and depression can be conquered by love and hope. The same idea can date back to the forefathers at home and abroad: the Three Character Primer begins with the classic sentence :People are born good(人之初,性本善).Greek Philosopher Socrates also claimed the same.At this point, I find myself in complete agreement with the author.I believe this is the very reason why there are so many people who would like to help others disregarding repayment. For instance, the moment people of Yushu was in trouble for the earthquake, thousands of kind people all over the world would like to lend a helping hand voluntarily. For another, the effect of the environment is not that irresistible. We should think twice before arriving at the conclusion: he that lies down with dogs must rise up with flea.To be specific, it is not sensible to turn someone away just because he was born in coarse environment.Just like the Song Zhou's the article praises the Lotus as the gentlemen's flowers, which share the same feature with both Oliver and Nancy, and that is growing up from the filthy mud without being polluted(出淤泥而不染).

第五篇:雾都孤儿 英文读后感

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his

twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little

remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a

person.Goodness is to humans what water is to fish.He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous

saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person.People

receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no

sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.’

That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness. From
