Comments about Gladiator
Maximus lead the Rome army defeated the invader and set an incredible prestige among the soldiers. The old Rome emperor wants to make Maximus his successor. However, the son of emperor, Commodus, who has longed for this position for a long time, would not agree. He killed his father when he was told that he would not be the emperor. He announced that he is the successor and he asked for Maximus’ loyalty. After being denied, he ordered his subordinates to kill Maximus and his family mercilessly.Maximus survived from this suffering, but his wife and son were killed in a terrible way.Commodus wants to set prestige among the people and he knows exactly what the Rome people want.He rebuilt the Colosseum and made the Gladiatorial contests popular again.Dramatically, Maximus was saved by a group of gladiators and became a gladiator himself. He fought and fought and won people’s love by his preeminent skills, known as the name Spaniard. At last, Commodus noticed him and found he is that undead Maximus.Under the pressure of the Roman people, Commodus agreed he and Maximus would have an battle. The end of the film is that Maximus won the battle and died of the wound that Commodus stabbed before the battle surreptitiously. He got together with his family in the heaven, and Rome became a republic as the wish of the old emperor.I would comment this film at three aspects: first, the film reflects the values that the American hold in common that great times need a hero and the hero must die in a way witch deserves.Maximus is a hero beyond doubt. He died after he revenged his family and saved the country. So his death is a deserving one.Second, the scene of the movie is gorgeous and splendid. The battle scene, the scene when the gladiators fight, and the scene when Maximus died all give us aesthetic pleasure.Third, Maximus is a mode that the director made to express what an emperor should be like.Maximus has all the virtues that an emperor should have: brave, strong, wise, benevolent, and etc.I think that must be the reason why so much persons love Maximus.Word Count: 373
