The Merchant of Venice is a tragic comedy by William Shakespeare, written between 1596 and 1598.It tells a story in the 14 th century at the city of Venice.There’s a young Venetian named Bassanio, wants to travel to Belmont to win the beautiful heiress Portia.He asks his friend Antonio for three thousand ducats to subsidies his travelling expenditures as a suitor for three months.Though Antonio doesn’t have so much cash at the present, he still promises his good friend and helps him.Antonio promises to help Bassanio if he can find a lender, so Bassanio turns to the Jewish moneylender Shylock and names Antonio as the loan’s guarantor.Shylock proposes a condition for the loan: if Antonio is unable to repay it at the specified date, he may take a pound of Antonio's flesh.Bassanio does not want Antonio to accept such a risky condition but Antonio still sign the agreement.Bassanio successfully win the Portia’s love and get married with her.Unfortunately, Antonio's ships are reported lost at sea.This leaves him unable to satisfy the bond.In this case, Shylock has Antonio arrested and brought before court.Bassanio has just got married.When he receives a letter telling him that Antonio has been unable to return the loan taken from Shylock.Bassanio leave for Venice immediately, with money from Portia, to save Antonio's life by offering the money to Shylock.Finally Antonio is saved by the efforts of Bassanio.Shakespeare's tried to explore and explain the true meaning of friendship and love in “The Merchant of Venice”.He told us how to see the world, how to be a person of integrity.Nowadays, people believe that money comes first and forget the pure friendship.People only believe the benefits.But I think there are so many things more precious than money, friendship is one of them.What exactly the meaning of friendship? Different people have different definitions of friendship.Friendship is a feeling that makes you feel safe and comfort when you stay with a person.It is the moment you do not have to weigh your thoughts and measure words before your friend.When you meet difficulties, your friend is the one who always be your side no matter what happens.Your friend is the one who can get you out of trouble and rescue you from dangerous.Thousands centuries’ history of mankind has passed.But still no one can give the proper definition of friendship.I think friendship is not complicated as we thought and we don’t need to think too much about what true friendship is.The only thing we need to believe is if someone trust you and share the same ideals with you, you can become good friends.
