Funeral Blues
W.H.Auden's “Funeral Blues” is a lament. It shows the great sorrowful lost that someone is suffering.Analysis:
“Stop all the clocks……Silence the pianos and with muffled drum” From here we know that the man is tired of any sound or any connection to the outside, everything around him seems so dull and weary.“Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.”Then we kown that this is on a pulic funeral. And we could figure out that maybe it's the reason why the man get so grieveing.“Let aeroplanes cricle moaning overhead,Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,”The massege “He Is Dead”is written on the sky so that every body could see it.And the sad turth is just like sky following and hauting on his heart wherever he go.“He Is Dead”is also capitalized to show how terrible the strike is.“Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.”These words seems to be nonsense. But it shows that the man want everyone share his sadness and feel sorry for him.“He was my North……my talk,my song;”This is my favourite part. The writer use parallel which strongthen the emotion of both readers and the man himself. We can see how important the departed saint mean to him.He WAS almost his whole world. He sunk into every aspect of the man's life. How could the man bear the rest life in a world without him? That must be very despairing.“I thought that love vould last forever:……For mothing now can ever vome to any good.”Since his lover—the most important man in his life—passed away, everythig left is meaningless. The man don't believe in love anymore bacause his beloved's life is robbed by this unfair world. And nothing better would come to him bacause he was the best. Conclusion:
The overall meaning of this poem is to express the heart-aching feeling of lost the one you love most and there is nothing you can do to change the fact. When reading this poem we can feel the sincere strong emotion and the desperate hopeless sadness that the man is suffering.
