当雅思考试(IELTS, international language testing system, 国际英语语言测试)于1989年登陆中国大陆时,当年全部考生57人。变化的速度远远超过人们的想象。2008年全中国大陆考生人数为26万人次。20年足够发生很多事情。但至少有一件事情还没有多少变化:中国学生的雅思口语分数。

可以说这是一个多少让中国人脸上挂不住的问题。2008年中国大陆雅思考生口语部分平均分

5.25分,荣幸地超越了卡塔尔考生的口语平均分(5.26分),登上了全球雅思口语平均分最低的宝座。全球的最高平均分被德国考生摘走,为7.24分。实际上,卡塔尔考生的分数非常值得我们反思:其考生除了口语外的听力、阅读、写作的分数均低于5分,只有口语为5.26分。而中国学生的其他几个分项的平均分为听力5.50分,阅读5.70分,写作5.12分。有趣的现象是,口语、写作明显低于阅读、听力。

如果我们一定要用一个句子来形容英语口语之于中国学生的话,恐怕应该是“胸口永远的痛”。一直以来,中国的英语教学中总是在摸索中前进,寻找一线希望来解决中国孩子的英语口语问题。似乎自中国学校的课堂引入英文课以来,口语总是我们心头的一片阴霾。

在英语培训界中多年的教学经验告诉我,英语口语的教学是一个复杂的、系统化的工程。它需要结合教师、学生、教材、词汇、句法、语音、语调、心理训练等各方面因素。上个月我在悉尼大学的一个学生写信告诉我,很感激我当时课堂上讲的英语学习方法。当时理解不太多,但到了澳洲之后,发现这的确是与真实的学习、生活的语言需求结合在一起的。雅思口语的系统之庞大,与其在国外生活、学习所需的语言技能的实用性是密不可分的。在国外的课堂中,中国学生的口语方面比较弱,故而适应起来往往比较缓慢、曲折而痛苦。究其原因,主要还是在国内的学习中不得其法。

如果一定要剖析雅思口语学习的结构,笔者建议,其准备应当分为三个阶段:

语音语调的锤炼阶段

如同小提琴手刚刚学琴时,拉空弦、拉音阶都要拉上好几个月一样,基本功的练习是必不可少的。语音语调在雅思口语中的重要性,不仅仅体现在它名列四大评分标准之一,更重要的是,一旦因为语音不清,语调不对而导致考官无法听懂,则其他三项评分标准也就变为一纸空谈。举例来说,中国学生常见的发音问题中,常有th音不咬舌的状况。比如,this这个单词念出来后,感觉像zis。虽说汉语中并没有咬舌的声音,但雅思考官的训练中自然包含这方面的针对训练,会很注意学生在这方面的欠缺。

各位都在电视节目中看过各种各样的外国人讲中文,能把音发得特别纯正的是很少的,感觉很像“大舌头”。那些说不太准的外国友人,虽然能让我们理解其所说的中文,但往往让人听得很痛苦,很纠结,总想帮助他把下半句说完。同样的道理,当我们带有浓重的本土口音去到国外学习生活时,外国友人们也往往觉得,能听懂,但沟通起来费劲。实际上,在出国以后,中国学生在对话中往往不会语音差到对方完全不能理解,但总是带有一些口音,让人感觉到说话不舒服。

忽视这个问题的代价是很大的。心理学研究告诉我们,人与人之间的交流,有35%左右是通过纯粹的语言内容,而有超过65%是通过语音、语调、肢体语言来实现的。21世纪是强调交流的世纪,信息代替金钱成为这个时代的主题。倘若通过语言留给对方的是“未接受良好教育”的印象,将大大制约其人的学业及事业乃至生活的发展。我想任何一位父母都不希望自己的孩子出国以后因为语音语调的问题受到别人的歧视。

除参加专业的英语培训机构的口语课程以外,建议学生寻找带有原版配音的英语教材来进行模仿。如新概念就是很好的模仿对象。具体操作方法是:仅寻找一篇文章,在不断听读的操作中,将每个句子的语音、语调、语速、断句、重音、弱读以及背后的情绪都全部模仿,并且自己录音,自己监听,不断修正。在条件允许时也建议寻找外教进行纠正。不过大多数中国学生和家长都容易忽略的一个问题是,实际上模仿整句话远远比模仿单个单词重要的多。

词汇、句型的输入阶段

很多在中国的外教都容易发现这样一个问题:中国学生在口语交流中往往容易“无话可说”。这个现象的起因有很多,不过多数外教错觉性认为主要原因是中国学生太害羞。他们往往认为,只要不断鼓励学生,让学生突破心理障碍,开口说英语,则教师的任务就结束了。

不得不说,这是一个谬论。导致学生“无话可说”的因素中,的确包括害羞。但我们不能忽略的是,现在大多数的中学生、大学生是80年代后期到90年代初期出生的,接受的是相对比较开放式的教育。这样的结果是,其实学生的害羞心理已经没有原先的那么重。

那么现阶段“无话可说”的最主要原因是什么呢?按笔者多年的教学经验来看,其实主要是缺乏足够的表达所需的句型、单词。也就是说,虽然我们鼓励学生多说,但其实他们没有足够的“弹药”,自然无法自由顺畅地表达。

单纯依赖外教的弊端由此而凸现出来。外教在为学生灌输、讲解句型和单词的时候,往往效率很低。一方面因为语言障碍,在面对基础本来就不太好的学生时,讲解一个单词耗费了大量的时间。比如一个中教只需要1分钟就能讲明白的单词或句型,一个外教往往要花到3、5分钟才能让学生明白自己想说的是什么。故而,教学管理中,笔者往往在口语教学中平衡中教与外教的比例。让善于讲解的中教先讲,再让善于引导的外教后讲,往往能够起到事半功倍的效果。雅思口语考试涉及上百个不同的口语话题,所包含内容之广可以说是骇人听闻的。所以笔者一直在课堂上强调:You can't be too prepared!(你再多准备都不算过分!)建议考生平时多听英文电视连续剧、脱口秀节目、新闻节目和电影。网络上的资源应有尽有,家长也应当有意识引导孩子去寻找适合自己兴趣的英文视频材料来进行课外学习和补充。另外,找到一本很好的口语教材对学习口语也很重要。从笔者的经验看来,大量进行单词和句型的记忆,并且在最短时间内进行口头练习,不仅是学习口语最快的方式,也是记忆单词、提高语感最佳的方式。举例来说,学生首先在情绪表达场景中学会抱怨的句型:I can't believe this is happening to me!(我简直不相信这会发生在我身上!),则应当马上与语言伙伴进行口头练习,体验如何在真实交流中使用该句式。

文化交际意识的养成语言学家早在上个世纪就已经得出以下结论:语境意识的养成对语言能力的培养是具备主导性作用的。有人常常半开玩笑地说,学习英语最好的办法就是把一个人直接扔到英国或者美国去。一个雅思口语准备已经完成前面两个阶段的学生,往往会发现,自己发音和语调已经过关,逐渐开始接近英语母语人士的发音,而各个不同话题的单词和句型积累也已经到达一定程度,能相对比较容易地探讨很多话题的内容。但这一切都还处在纸上谈兵的阶段。将之前所学完全转化为实战经验,还有一个漫长的过程。很多雅思考生之前准备得相当充分,但真的看到金发碧眼的考官时,心里不禁打了个冷战,无法控制自己害怕的情绪,之前的所学就无法准确地、全面地调动出来了。这就是外教大显神通的时候了。作为英语母语人士,再配合社会交际教学法,外教往往懂得如何去调动学生的积极性,将之前所学一股脑都倒出来,落实为练习,加强使用能力。

其间,学生也需要逐渐注意提高文化交际意识。当我们懂得西方人的交际习惯时,其实就能够掌握与之交谈的方法。这在以后,不管是雅思口语考试、大学课堂讨论还是世界名企的工作面试当中,都是很重要的体现一个人素质的指标。举例来说,中国学生往往喜欢照搬教科书中的how are you? I'm fine, thank you.And you? 的经典俗套打招呼方式来与外国友人交谈,然而事实是大多数外国朋友都并不这么说。他们倾向于说 Hello!或者 What's up?来表示打招呼。我的一个学生在伦敦政经学院给我写信说,她的一个同学每次在别人问她What's up?的时候,都非常认真地回答她最近在做些什么事情,搞得对方非常的尴尬。实际上看似问你“最近怎样”的问题就好比中国人之间互问“吃饭了么”那样的稀松平常,并不是真的在问你最近干什么,只需要简单地回答You know, as usual(你知道的,就老样子)就可以了。

建议准备好前面两个阶段的雅思考生平时尽量争取与外教面对面练习的机会,也应当大量参

加英语的各类活动,如戏剧大赛,演讲大赛、电影沙龙等等,最大限度地接触英文环境,激发英语思维意识和文化交际意识,以西式思维渗透英语学习,才能更快地提高口语实力。

从事英语培训多年,笔者不得不指出,现今国内的雅思口语教学尚处于开发阶段。课程特色分为两个极端:一个为短训为主,大班,中教讲解为主;另一个为长期打包课程,小班,外教讲解为主。前一种课程中,口语教师往往只能起到一个提纲挈领的作用。因为人太多,课太短,只能讲个大概,大部分学习还是是由学生自己在家内完成,自觉性比较差的学生往往就功败垂成。后一种课程往往走精品包装路线,包括豪华装修、品种繁多的活动、配合大量的电脑上机,对此笔者不做评论。综述,理想的口语学习体系,还是应该以中国学生自身的特色来进行设计,不能一味地照搬西式的口语教学法。

没有一个家长不希望自己的孩子说一口漂亮、自信的语言,不管是中文还是英文。因为语言是一个人沟通信息并且获得社会资源的最基本保障。笔者相信未来的几年,中国的英语口语教学必定能找到一个对中国学生有足够适应度和价值的学习方法和体系,一雪前耻,让中国的孩子在雅思口语的考试中抬起高傲的头。
