Giving is Receiving—Personal Growth in volunteer Work
Morning, ladies and gentlemen.
Last summer, I volunteered to work as an English teacher in a primary school for children of
migrant workers.
To be accurate, I didn’t volunteer.I was dragged in.(literally)
When my friend first hit upon the idea of this project, I was all against it:“What? To spend my
vacation standing
Yelling at a bunch of nine-year-olds who couldn’t even speak proper Mandarin Chinese? And
besides, there`s no pay
for my toil. No, I am definitely not going.”
But my friend twisted my arms to have me join them.
Unexpectedly, the first lesson I taught turned out a lesson for me.
The moment I stepped into the shabby classroom, I was touched dy the loud, respectful voices in unison: “Good
morning, teacher!”
Instead of fooling around, the chilend were thirsty for knowledge and efficient in absorbing everying I was able to
give them.
This made me despise myself for I hadn’t even prepared for the class.
During the break, I leaned over the squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row:“ Without air-
Conditioning, it’s really hot here. Are you tired?”
“Not at all,” said he, shaking his head.“It`s fine here.My Dad builds asphalt roads. That is really tiring and hot.”
“一点都不,”他摇摇头说,“这里很好。我爸爸在修沥青公路。那里才是真的又热又累人。”
As summer advanced, my enthusiasm as a teacher grew.
I prepared my lesson carefully and even used some methods my teachers used.
I organized many group activities to give the kids fun.Strangely enough, the heat was also becoming less and less
unbearable.
Soon, my one-month volunteer work came to an end.
When I was leaving my last class, I turned back and saw smiling faces and waving hands.
Never before had I ever had such a feeling of sadness, which was, nevertheless, mixed with a sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happiness.
I was paid for my work, amply paid, not in terms of money, but something more valuable.
My English was improved.I was able to teach it, although not very professional.I learned about the grassroots-
level society.
Inside myself a heart is growing, a heart that not only beats for myself, but cares for others as well.
The volunteer work gave me a precious little chance to say thanks to people like the little boy’s father,
Who construct highways san under grounds, build up modern skyscrapers, and make our cities more and more beautiful.
To help the children with their English was all I could do, at present, to show my gratitude to these unsung
heroes.
The world may not have been fair to them,这个世界对他们可能不太公平,So privileged and blessed people like me are obliged to do whatever we can to help make their life better.
What I ever [whatever] I do for them, however,然而,我所做的事情微不足道
I know it cannot be compared with what they have done to improve the quality of life in our cities.
Ladies and gentlemen, now realize that volunteering shouldn’t be a one-time personal experience.
It should be a lifetime activity of everybody.
Many of us are now offering assistance to the needy and to each other, and our efforts have indeed made a
difference.
Whether we are helping children with their schooling, or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helping out
We well not only contribute to the harmony of the world but elevate ourselves as well.
Emerson once said,:“It’s one of the most beautiful compensations of this life
爱默生曾经说过:“此生最美好的一种报偿就是,that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” He was right.
I hear that my university is going to organize anther voluntary teaching program this summer.
This time I won’t be dragged in.I will volunteer.
Thank you.

Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years. In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons. The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me.but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself. One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, “Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time.” I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly.Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself.I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, “Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?”
I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word “responsibility” and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself.New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.New ideas, new information, new technologies.people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds.Society is becoming more competitive.Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts.Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it.Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist. We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems.History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student.probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow. It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us.Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

My great-great-grandfather was very nervous, even though he had done it thousands of times. He and his teammates held their breath in total darkness…waiting for the music. At the age of 101, he knew it was likely his last chance to compete in a dancing contest. The drums kicked in and, slowly but surely, he started the moves of Gaoshan--a folk dance unique to my part of China. The music was serene...the motion was graceful....and everything was so harmonious. And then, everything changed!
The tempo sped up.The dancers started shaking their hips.It was completely unexpected but yes, they were dancing modern disco.I was delighted, but not everyone liked it.Some argued that the traditional dance was compromised by the inclusion of Western fluff. So I asked Angong, “Why not just do a typical Gaoshan dance?”
“Are you kidding me, sweetheart?” he replied.“Where would we be without some clashes and conflicts?”
That was Angong’s gut reaction, but what he implied set me thinking.“Where would we be without some clashes and conflicts?”
Looking back on the life of my great-great-grandfather, it was a journey marked by clashes every step of the way. When he was a teenager, China’s door was busted wide open.He cut off his ponytail following the end of Qing---China’s last feudal Dynasty.During the day, cars ran alongside rickshaws. At night, jazz clashed with Chinese opera.Dancing was a luxury reserved for the rich and privileged. When the People’s Republic was founded in 1949, Angong danced on the streets with joy. After years of unrest, he felt a sense of belonging and new possibilities. That was the moment he knew he wanted to be an artist. After the Cultural Revolution, Angong witnessed China’s reform and opening-up.Both Deng Lijun of Taiwan and the Carpenters of America were huge stars at the time. For the first time in years, Angong didn’t have to follow one set of doctrines or one form of dancing for that matter.Angong’s personal journey mirrored the transformation of a nation, a
transformation encapsulated in the life of a man who pursued artistic
expression. Please remember, Angong and his generations were born into a China that was struggling to keep at bay an outside world that threatened China’s
self-perception and self-rule.A century later, this is a different China, and fortunately, a China that has learned lessons history had to offer, and now it seeks to re-engage the west.Angong was a man of his times, but he has always been open to new voices, new ideas, new dances. He adapted, changed and grew by learning from the world around him, both Chinese and Western.By being open to each other, we can grow in unexpectedly beautiful ways, just like my Angong’s disco Gaoshan dance.Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you to join my great-great-grandfather and me as we dance with a spring in our step into that great unknown that will be our future.
