1.parental leave“育婴假”，很多国家都将育婴假作为一种employee benefit（员工福利），为员工提供paid or unpaid time off work（带薪或无薪假期）以方便他们照顾孩子。跟孩子相关的假期还有maternity leave（产假），paternity leave（陪产假，即妻子在享受产假期间，男方享受的用来照料对方的假期）、及adoption leave（收养假，收养孩子的假期）。家庭生活是人们生活中很重要的一部分，保持work–life balance（工作生活平衡）有利于提高员工“幸福感”。一些公司设有paid family leave（探亲假）鼓励员工多花些时间与家人在一起。工作中常见的假期还有sick leave（病假）、annual leave（年假）、casual leave（事假）、marital leave（婚假）。

2.deep-sea technology “深海技术”，指对深海环境和资源的调查、勘探和开发利用技术。而deep-dive technology就是“深潜技术”，指在深海环境利用deep-diving submersible（深潜器）进行水下考察、海底勘探、海底开发和打捞、救生等任务的技术。在三位astronauts（航天员）完成神州九号与天宫一号manual docking（手控对接）的任务时，三名oceanauts（潜航员）也随着“蛟龙”号来到7020米的海底，为scientific research（科学研究）和 peaceful exploration（和平开发）海底资源提供有效数据和技术支持。

3.aerospace economy“太空经济”，是指太空相关产业制造的经济效益。太空相关产业包括跟卫星发射相关的launch vehicle（运载火箭）和卫星制造，及ground equipment（地面设备）制造等；也包括各种太空活动所创造的产品和服务等，如radio communication（无线电通信）和satellite television（卫星电视）、telemedicine（远程医疗），及meteorological monitoring（气象监测）等等。太空经济还包括space tourism（太空旅游）等新兴服务制造的经济效益，太空经济规模在50多年时间里增长了上千倍，是迄今为止增长最快的经济形态之一。太空活动不仅能产生巨大的经济效益，也能产生space junk/debris（太空垃圾），其中包括defunct/discarded satellite（报废卫星）、spent rocket bodies（火箭残骸）等等。

4.space debris“太空垃圾”，也可以用space junk或space trash来表达。太空垃圾是围绕地球轨道的无用人造物体，其构成包括人造卫星碎片、漆片、粉尘，甚至整个火箭发动机。自2009年1月以来已有大量的太空垃圾在太空轨道中。由于高速的轨道碎片可对运转的卫星造成极大损害，太空垃圾成为日益受到关注的问题。除了遥远的太空存在的垃圾问题，我们日常生活中的垃圾问题也很严重，许多garbage disposal plant（垃圾处理场）的垃圾都堆积如山。还有一些不占用实际空间的垃圾，如spam message（垃圾短信）、junk mail（垃圾邮件）等也让人头疼。

5.Chinese Exclusion Act “排华法案”，该法连同其它discriminating laws（歧视性法案）一起，禁止华人在美拥有房产、禁止华人与白人通婚、禁止华人妻子儿女移民美国﹑禁止华人在政府就职等。该法案产生的背景是First Transcontinental Railroad（太平洋铁路）修建完成之后，大批华工涌入美国城市，很多白人认为肯吃苦、工资低的中国人抢了他们的饭碗，反华情绪日益猖獗。18日的道歉的是过去25年来两院共同通过的第四个resolution of regret（道歉决议）。类似排华法案的政策还有澳大利亚的White Australia Policy（白澳政策），该政策只允许白人移民流入澳大利亚，当时很多华人忍受不了欺压，被迫离开澳大利亚。19世纪末美国和欧洲殖民主义国家煽动对亚洲民族，尤其是对中国偏见还有一个用语，Yellow Peril（黄祸），这个说法被认为是China threat theory（中国威胁论）的前身。这种anti-Chinese sentiment（反华情绪）是指对中国、中国人、海外华人或中国文化讨厌或是恐惧的一种情绪，也被称为Sinophobia（反华、恐华）。

6.forced abortion “强制引产”，在这儿abortion是指人工terminate pregnancy（终止妊娠），也可称作induced abortion(人工流产)。我国现行的family planning policy（计划生育政策）规定，引产只能在征得孕妇的written consent（书面同意）下进行，且要坚决杜绝late-stage abortion（大月份引产）。“超生人口”英文表达为extra births。与abortion之相对的是spontaneous abortion（自然流产），也叫miscarriage（流产、失败），是指gestational age（胎龄）不足28周、胎儿体重不足1000g而终止妊娠，其中在妊娠二十周以后流产，称为preterm birth（早产），胎儿有可能存活。常见的自然流产种类还有threatened abortion（先兆流产）、recurrent pregnancy loss(习惯性流产）等。

7.reserve astronaut“航天员候选人”，reserve在这儿意为“储备的、备用的”，例如：a reserve supply of food（食物供给储备）。Reserve在金融术语中表示“储备金”，如forex reserve pool（外汇储备库）；这个词用在足球比赛中还可表示“替补的”，如reserve player（替补队员）。选拔航天员候选人十分严格，有body odor（体臭）、bad breath（口臭）、chronic sore throats（慢性咽炎）、ringworm（癣）, cavities（蛀牙）等普通疾病的都算不合格。另外，航天员候选人的家人也得出示证明其无contagious disease（传染病）的clean bill of health（健康证明）。

8.smart defense “巧防御”，其主要内容是由北约负责协调，pooling resources and capabilities（整合各成员国的资源和能力），通过合作来实现互补，在整体上保证北约的实力。此次峰会上，北约公开了一些跨国项目，例如组建interim ballistic missile defense capability（临时弹道导弹防御能力）、部署Alliance Ground Surveillance system（联合地面监视系统）、以及扩大波罗的海上空的air policing mission（“空中警察”任务）等。美国国务卿希拉里曾在2009年提出smart power(巧实力)的概念，即综合运用美国外交的各种政策工具，包括经济、军事、政治、法律和文化等各种手段，恢复美国的global dominance（全球领导力）。“巧实力”的实质是hard power（硬实力）和soft power（软实力）的结合。Smart这个词还可以表示“智能的”，如smart missile（智能导弹）和smart phone（智能手机）等。

9.Diamond Jubilee “钻石庆”，即60周年纪念。以前人们在纪念结婚周年的时候，会互赠礼物，结婚时间越长，赠送的礼物也越贵重，后来人们就用礼物来指代结婚的年份，例如结婚五十周年称为golden wedding（金婚）、结婚一周年为paper wedding（纸婚）等。这种称呼也适用于其他的纪念日，此次“钻石庆”就是纪念英国女王accession to the throne（登基）60周年的。其他重要的纪念日还包括Golden Jubilee（五十周年纪念）、Silver Jubilee（二十五周年纪念）、以及Platinum Jubilee（75周年纪念）。伊丽莎白二世于1952年2月came to the throne（登基），次年6月举行coronation（加冕礼），目前她是16个sovereign states（主权国家）的queen regnant（执政女王）。今年英国将举行一系列活动来纪念女王登基60周年，包括放gun salute（礼炮）、进行maritime parade（海上阅兵）、举行Diamond Jubilee Pageant（钻石庆典）、及Armed Forces Parade and Muster（检阅三军）等。

10.electronic passport“电子护照”，也叫e-passport、biometric passport, 或digital passport，这种护照是在传统护照的封面或者当中的某一页嵌入电子芯片（digital chip），并将持照人的姓名、性别、出生日期、照片图像、指纹（fingerprint）等丰富的个人信息储存在芯片内。2006年，International Civil Aviation Organization（ICAO，国际民航组织）规定电子护照中必须存储面相特征，指纹及虹膜（iris）可以作为备选。目前大部分国家采用面相识别（facial recognition）。此次签发的电子护照是普通护照，即公民因前往外国定居、探亲、学习、就业、旅行、从事商务活动等非公务原因出国的护照，正式称呼叫ordinary passport/regular passport，一般直接称passport。在中国，普通护照又可分因公普通护照（passport for public affairs）和因私普通护照（passport）。中国护照种类还包括official passport/service passport（公务护照）、和diplomatic passport（外交护照）。大陆居民去香港或澳门需办理Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao（港澳通行证），也叫Two-way Permit。

11.biological passport“生物护照”，它与我们平时所说的出国要用的passport（护照）不是一回事。“生物护照”是对运动员各项生物学指标的记录。一段时间内，将生物指标采集，例如造血细胞，正常情况下有正常值，检测的过程中发现细胞大大增加了，如果连续地看到有正常以及不正常的情况，就说明有可能使用违禁药物。常规的做法都是随机挑选，有的药物是6小时或是8小时内起作用，过了时间就查不到，用“生物护照”就可以避免这种漏洞。“生物护照”检测是anti-doping（反兴奋剂）的措施之一。兴奋剂是各类体育比赛中的banned substance（违禁物），参赛运动员会都要参加random doping test（随机兴奋剂检测），比赛组织方对服用兴奋剂的运动员都实行zero tolerance（零容忍）态度。

12.teachers' code of morality“师德”，即教师和一切教育工作者在从事教育活动中必须遵守的code of ethics（道德规范）。在上面的新闻中，学生实名举报张大同以physical examination（检查身体）为由对学生进行molest（猥亵）。Code of morality是指“道德规范”，也叫moral code，常见的work ethic（职业道德）还有医生须遵守的medical morality（医德）。Code在这里表示“准则、法规、行为规范等”，类似的用法还有traffic code（交通规则）、dress code（着装要求）、sanitary code（卫生法规）等。Code这个词也可表示“代码、密码”，如超市商品上的bar code（条形码）及拨打电话时拨的area code（区号）等。Code还可表示计算机中的编程“代码”，如binary code（二进制代码）及order code（指令码）等。

13.carry-on luggage“随身携带行李”，即可随身携带上飞机的行李，与之相对的是checked baggage（托运行李）。此次hijack（劫机）事件后，很多地方都提高了security level（安检级别），用explosive detector（爆炸物检测器）对行李进行检测，广州深圳等地机场甚至为去乌鲁木齐的航班开设了exclusive channel of security checks（专用安检通道）。为了尽量缩短安检时间，在打包行李时，一定要注意是否意外携带了prohibited/forbidden items（违禁物品），并注意机场的liquids restriction（液体限制）。表示“行李”的意思时，luggage也能用baggage来代替，常见固定用法如下：航空公司规定的baggage allowance（免费行李重量限额），超过重量限额的excess baggage（超重行李），下飞机后需要去baggage carousel（行李传送带）上领回托运行李，领取行李的地方也叫baggage claim area。

14.dethroned就是“卫冕失败的”，指上届冠军未能成功地保住自己的冠军宝座。Dethrone原意是指将某人从王位上赶下来，可引申为“打败某人，赢得重要职位或是荣誉”。例如：The champion was dethroned by a young boxer.（那位冠军被一位年轻的拳击手打败了，未能蝉联冠军）。卫冕指的是“捍卫自己的荣誉和王者地位”，卫冕冠军就是指保卫自己冠军之冕的上届冠军，英语中叫defending champion，如果卫冕成功，那就是蝉联冠军了，英语中可以说retain championship title，冠军获得者也可以叫title holder。此外，在比赛中打破记录的运动员叫record-breaker，记录保持者叫record-holder。梅西在巴塞罗那队担任forward（前锋），也叫striker，足球队的其他位置还包括：goalkeeper（守门员）、centre-back（中后卫）、sweeper（清道夫）、wing-back（边后卫）、center forward（中锋）、winger（边锋）等。

15.rapid counter-attack “快速反击”，指得球后利用对方还来不及组织严密的防守阵形时，快速将球传给中、前场有利位置的球员进行攻击。和rapid counter-attack相对应的进攻形式为positional attack（阵地进攻），也就是在对方已经建立起严密的防守阵形后，进攻球队从后场利用传接球层层推进至前场的进攻方式。按照参与进攻球员的不同，球场上的进攻还可以分为all attack（全队进攻）和individual attack（个人进攻）。在all attack中，fast attack（快速攻击）是一项重要原则，也就是我们常说的“快攻”。要想攻破对方球门，除了脚法一流的射手，还需要其他球员进行secondary attack（助攻），将球传给射手。文中还提到了dead-ball（死球），指的是根据规则造成比赛暂时停止的球，例如有人将球踢出界外，或有人犯规后就需要重新开球，而在这里，巴拉圭主帅其实是强调要警惕日本队的free kick（任意球）。

17.bulk packaging “散货包装”，简称散装，散装食品英文叫bulk food。跟“散装”相对的是excessive packaging（过度包装）。国家规定，包装成本不能超过商品retail price（零售价）的20%，超过这一标准，则为过度包装。目前市场上rice dumplings（粽子）的超高价格，很大程度上由过度包装和tied good（搭售产品）造成，很多粽子gift-box（礼盒）中很多都包含了酒、茶叶等产品，进行bundling（捆绑销售）。另外，有些粽子的stuffing（馅料）由abalone（鲍鱼）、dried scallop（干贝）等做成，“高贵”的馅料抬高了粽子的成本。此外，商场还会利用cash back（返点，即客户购买东西后给予客户一定比例的现金返还）作为rebate（回扣）的手段促销礼盒装粽子，这或许也是extravagant packaging（奢华包装）屡禁不止、各种sky-high price（天价）粽子不断出现的一个原因。

18.pesticide-filled bag “加药果袋”，简称“药袋”，也可以译为chemical-contaminated bags，即含有类似pesticide（农药）的化学物质的纸袋，药袋主要用来套在苹果幼果上防止虫害。用药袋的苹果表皮比较光滑，卖相好，但药袋所含主要成分tuzet（退菌特）和asomate（福美胂）存在安全风险，是禁止使用的。专家认为在果袋中适量使用corrosion inhibitors（防腐剂）是可以接受的。农业部就此事回应称为保证粮食产量，使用农药不可避免，所以pesticide residue（农药残留）也是不可避免的，但是要保证没有excessive pesticide（农药超标）。近几年，我们餐桌上的很多东西都经历了安全危机，例如加swelling agent（膨大剂）的西瓜，用ripening agent（催熟剂）催熟的蔬菜水果的等。好像一时之间，很多东西都不能吃了，为了吃到安全健康的食品，很多人都开始吃100-foot diet（自产绿色食品）了。

不知是醉酒驾车撞死人的事件真的越来越多，还是“后胡斌飙车案”语境下媒体对此类案件报道增多，让人产生这类事故越来越多的感觉。新近，杭州又发生了一起酒后驾车撞死人的悲剧。8月4日晚，魏某酒后驾驶保时捷越野车，撞死横穿马路的女子马芳芳。

跟同城的胡斌案一样，驾车者身份再次成为舆论关注焦点。媒体报道强调，今年29岁的魏某是杭州某公司的市场部经理，车主系其父，也是该公司法人代表兼董事长——新闻这样交代并没有问题，但我不喜欢某些媒体刻意在大标题中强调“杭州保时捷撞死人案司机父亲为董事长”。像在胡斌案中刻意强调胡斌的富二代身份一样，这是在迎合社会的某种情绪，渲染社会的断裂，并营造一种对抗的氛围，把一场酒后驾车引发的交通事故，描述成一场贫富对抗、强弱对立、社会断裂的标志事件。这样的渲染是很可怕的。在胡斌案中就表现得淋漓尽致，回想一下当初某些媒体的标题：富二代阔少飙车撞死大学生 ——这多么让人血脉贲张，多么让人愤怒，多么强烈地刺激着公众本就脆弱而敏感的贫富神经，在斑马线上营造了一种多么可怕的贫富对抗、强弱对立场景。可实际上，伤亡者谭卓早已毕业工作多年，而胡斌才是杭州某大学的在读大学生。如果根据实际身份把这样的描述转换为“在读大学生开车撞死公司白领”，舆论肯定又是另外一种反应和情绪，可见这种身份标签的悖谬。

显然，一些媒体之所以那样描述，是迎合舆论中部分人对贫富差距的受害想象，在利用这种情绪进行炒作。“杭州保时捷撞死人案司机父亲为董事长”也是如此，看似在陈述一个事实，实际是在刻意强化那种“富二代没几个好东西”、“富人为富不仁欺压良民”的舆论偏见，传播“醉酒驾车者都是富人”、“强者肆无忌惮欺凌弱者”的仇恨印象。

醉酒驾车的多是富家子弟，这其实是媒体对身份的选择性强调营造出的一种幻觉。据有关部门统计，近年来我国每年死于车祸的人数高达10万左右，其中相当部分是“酒精”所致。中国每年由于酒后驾车而引发的交通事故多达数

万起，数以万计的家庭因为交通事故而支离破碎。另有数据统计，从1994年到xx年,全国因酒后驾车而导致的死亡人数平均每年以 7．3％的速度增长——不知有些媒体有没有深思过，每年数万起的酒后驾车案中有多少富人作的孽，多少是富二代飙车引致，多少是宝马闯的祸？

不说远的，就说近来各地发生的几起酒后或醉酒驾车撞死人的事故吧。成都那起醉酒驾车酿成4死1重伤的惊天血案，司机孙伟铭只是成都某技术公司一名普通员工，开的也不是名车。广州中山一路“5·15”造成3人死亡的特大车祸，醉酒驾车的司机梁某是一个普通人。嘉兴中院近来审理了一起案件，从安徽老家到嘉兴打工的高某，酒后驾车撞死了自己的妻子??在这样的案件中，媒体从来不会强调肇事者的身份，因为那样的身份没有“新闻性”。而一旦是个富人或富二代，身份就会在新闻标题中被强化，于是留下“富人名车草菅人命”的印象。毋庸讳言，公众情感因为这样对贫富身份的刻意渲染而进一步被撕裂，正像在胡斌案中所显现的那样：既干扰了司法独立，又撕裂了社会情感。很明显，醉酒驾车并不是哪个阶层的原罪，不是专属哪个群体的罪恶标签，而是一种普遍性、平均分布的罪恶，人人都可能醉酒，人人都可能开车，人人醉酒开车都会危及交通安全。醉酒驾车只是一种醉酒者对法律的侵犯，对公共安全的危害，是醉酒驾车者与社会的矛盾，而不是富人与穷人的矛盾。公众的敌人是肆意践踏法律的醉酒驾车者，而不是富人，只不过有时碰巧是一个富二代而已。

确实，改革转型期的中国，贫富差距拉大是一个现实，贫富对立导致的许多问题也客观存在。但负责任的媒体应报道真相，以客观的舆论监督消弭这种断裂，理性地引导公众情绪，而不是利用这种情绪进行炒作，惟恐对富人的仇视情绪还不够，为这种情绪推波助澜火上浇油。评论者更要有一颗仁心，更要把尊重规则置于首位，独立、客观、理性地进行判断，而不是被怒气冲冲、情绪化的舆论所引导，迎合那种非理性的情绪。贫富差距的问题需要我们共同去解决，而不是人为地渲染。
