Part IIReading Comprehension

Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. After reading each passage, you will find 5 questions or statements. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked with A, B, C and D.You should choose the Answer Sheet.Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun , but the man with the

portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended

that all airlines ban(禁止)such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly

take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights.Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers.Experts know

that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication.8ut, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable(易受损的)to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use

radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.16.The passage is mainly about __________.A.a new regulation for all airlinesB.the defects of electronic devices

C.a possible cause of aircraft crashesD.effective safety measures for air flight

17.What is said about the over 10O aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?

A.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems-

B.They may have taken Place during take-off and landing.C.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers, portable computers.D.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.18.Few airlines want to impose a total passengers using electronic devices because_________.A.they don‟t believe there is such a danger as radio interference

B.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved

C.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players

D.they have other effective safety measures to fall back on

19.Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic field on an airplane's computers?

A.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane

B.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.C.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs

D.Because expert lack equipment to do such research.20.It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.A.is in favor of prohibiting passengers-use of electronic devices completely

B.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference

C.hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem

D.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness “for a great many people.Shy people are anxious and

self-conscious;that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions.Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am 1 making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people adversely.A person's self-concept is

reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need

reassurance that they are doing “the right thing”.Shy people are very sensitive to criticism;they feel it confirms their inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliments because they believe they are unworthy of praise.A shy person may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: ”You're just saying that to make me feel good.I know it‟s not true.“ It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness With

determined and patient effort in building self-confidence.Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well astheir strengths. For example, most people would like to be “A” students in every subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have difficulty in some areas.People‟s expectations of themselves must be realistic.Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we

understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up our full potential.Let‟s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.21.The first paragraph is mainly about __________.A.the characteristics of shy peopleB.the cause of shyness

C.the questions in the minds of shy peopleD.the effect of shyness on people

22.According to the writer, self-awareness is __________.A.harmful to peopleB.a weak point of shy peopleC.the cause of unhappinessD.a good quality

23.What is the shy people's reaction to compliment?

A.They are pleased by it.B.They feel it is not true.C.They are very sensitive to it.D.They feel it confirms their inferiority.24.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Shyness helps us to live up to our full potential.B.Shyness enables us to understand ourselves better.C.Shyness blocks our chances for a rich life.D.Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem.25.We can infer from the passage that the writer is __________.A.a shy personB.a realistic personC.a sensitive personD.a reserved person

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that

are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a very complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the ”system“ of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is

an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. The definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction , much more than the amount of money involved must be known.80th the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged , the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise total

“package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.26.What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Inherent weaknesses of the Price System.B.The Complexities of the Price System.C.Credit Terms in Transactions.D.Resource allocation and the Public sector.27.According to the passage, the price system is related primarily to ________.A.labor and educationB.transportation and insurance

C.utilities and repairsD.products and services

28.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a factor in the complete understanding of price?

A.Instructions that come with a product.B.The quantity of a product

C.The quality of a productD.Warranties that cover a product.29.In the last sentence of the passage, the word “they“ refers to ________.A.return privilegesB.all the factors.C.buyer and sellerD.money.30.The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses _________.A.unusual ways to advertise products.C.theories about how products affect different levels of society.B.types of payment plans for service.D.how certain elements of a price ”package“ influence its market value

Questions 3T to 35 are based on the following passage. One phase of the business cycle is the expansion phase. This phase is a two-fold one, including recovery and

prosperity.During the recovery there is every-growing expansion of existing facilities, and new facilities for production are created.More businesses are created and older ones expanded.Improvements of various kinds are made. There is an ever increasing optimism about the future of economic growth.Much Capital is invested in machinery and “heavy” industry.More labor is employed.More raw materials are required. As one part of the economy develops, other parts are affected. For example, a great expansion in automobiles result in an expansion of the steel, glass, and rubber industries.Roads are required;thus the cement and machinery industries are stimulated.Demand for labor and materials results in greater prosperity for workers and suppliers of raw materials, including farmers. This increases purchasing power and the volume of goods bought and sold. Thus prosperity is diffused among the various segments of the population. This prosperity period may continue to rise and rise without an apparent end. However, a time coms when this phase reaches a peak and stops spiraling upwards. This is the end of the expansion phase.31.We may assume that in the next paragraph the writer will discuss _______.A.cyclical industriesB.union demandsC.the higher cost of livingD.the recession period

32.The title below that best expresses the idea of this passage is _________.A.The Business CycleB.The Recovery StageC.An Expanding Society D.The Period of Good Time

33.Prosperity in one industry _____________.A.reflects itself in many other industriesB.will spiral upwards

C.will affect the steel industryD.will end abruptly

34.Which of the following industries will probably be a good indicator of a period of expansion?
