Respect yourself, or no one else will respect you.

Constant dropping wears away a stone.

Many drops make a shower.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

A good marksman may miss.

There are only two powers in the world, the sword and the pen;and in the end the former is always conquered by the latter.

Experience is the father of wisdom and memory the mother.

The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious.

Speech is silver, silence is golden.

Judge not a book by its cover.

One wrong thought may cause a lifelong regret.

Learn to walk before you run.

Still waters run deep.

A wise head makes a close mouth.

Great designs require great consideration.

The wolf may lose his teeth, but never his nature.

例如:No pains,no gains.(不劳无获。)Grasp all, lose all.(贪多必失。)Out of sight, out of mind.(眼不见,心不烦。)Health is better than wealth.(健康胜过财富。)Practice makes perfect.(熟能生巧。)Better early than late./ Better late than never.(早做比晚做好。 A friend in need is a friend indeed.(患难见真情。)An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.(一日之计在于晨。)……

Let sleeping dogs lie.

A penny saved is a penny earned(or gained).

It is good fishing in troubled waters.

Seeing is believing.

It’s no use crying over spilt milk.

It’s better to give than to receive.

Be slow to promise and quick to perform.

The man that suffers much knows much.

Heaven helps those who help themselves.

He that is master of himself will soon be master of others.

All is not gold that glitters.

All is well that ends well.

Don’t put off till tomorrow what should be done today.

What is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

It is not work that kills, but worry.

Rats desert a sinking ship.

Two heads are better than one.

When the cat is away, the mice will play.

Rome was not built in a day.

Every Jack must have his Jill.(相当于汉语“有情人终成眷属。”)

Jack of all trades, master of none.

教学中,笔者用“One today is worth two tomorrows.(一个今天胜过两个明天。)”告诫学生珍惜今日,发愤求学;用“A life without a purpose is a ship without a rudder.(人生无目的,犹如船失去了舵。)”激励学生树立理想,勇于追求;用“All things are easy that are done willingly.(做事乐意,诸事容易。)” 鼓励学生善于思考,勤于发问;用“He who laughs last laughs best.(谁笑到最后,谁笑得最好。)” 告诉学生待人真诚,求真务实;用“It is not helps, but obstacles, not facilities but difficulties, that make men.(造就人的,不是帮助,而是磨难,不是方便,而是困难。)”告诫学生不畏困难,迎头赶上;用“The first test of a truly great man is his humility.(一个真正伟大的人,对他的第一个考验就是看他是否谦逊。)”告诫学生不要骄傲,愈战愈勇;用“Fortune smiles upon the brave and frowns upon the coward.(幸运喜欢勇敢的人,而不喜欢怯懦的人。)”“No way is impossible to courage.(勇敢面前没有通不过的路。)”

Do in Rome as the Romans do.(在罗马就要像罗马人一样生活。

Rome was not built in a day.(罗马不是一天建成的。

All roads lead to Rome(条条道路通罗马。

Fortune favors the brave.(勇敢者交好运)

There is no rule without an exception.(没有一条规则没有例外)

Don’t put the cart before the horse.(不要本末倒置)

Once is no custom.(一次不是习惯)

Nurture is above nature.(教育生于天赋)

A cold April the barn will fill.(四月寒冷谷满仓)

He has two stomachs to eat and one to work.(他有两个肚子吃,只有一个肚子做工作。

If the rain comes before the wind, lower your topsails, and take them in;if the wind comes before the rain, lower you topsails, and hoist them again.(如果先下雨后刮风,就收下你的中桅帆;如果先刮风后下雨,就把中桅帆再扬起。)

比喻“莫惹事生非;别自找麻烦”)Every dog has his day(每只狗都有它的好时光。 Love me, love my dog(爱屋及乌)等等。

It never rains but it pours.(不雨则已,一雨倾盆)。

When the mist comes from the hill, then good weather it doth spill;when the mist comes from the sea, then good weather it will be.(雾从山上来,好天要变坏;雾从海上来,好天气会来). A snow year, a rich year.(下雪的一年,丰收的一年)Cast not a clout till May be out.(到了五月末,才把棉衣脱)For a morning rain leave not your journey.(早雨不耽搁旅行).Evening red and morning grey, are the signs of a fine day.(晚霞和晨雾是晴天的征兆)A misty morning may have a fine day.(有雾的早晨可能是晴天)When the wind is in the east, it’s neither good for man nor beast.(风起东方,人畜不安)When the wind is in the west, the weather’s at the best.(风起西方,气候最佳)。

反映大不列颠币制的谚语有:in for a penny, in for a pound.(一旦开始就干到底;一不做,二不休)Penny wise and pound foolish.(小事聪明,大事糊涂)Take care of the pence, and the pounds will take care of themselves.(小事谨慎,大事自成)Give him an inch and he’ll take an ell.(他得寸进尺)这几条谚语中的penny, pound, inch是大不列颠的货币单位和度量衡。
