他希望学生们以他走过的弯路为鉴。“我父亲在我两岁时离家。我由单亲母亲抚养。她不时要为生活苦苦挣扎，难以满足孩子的要求……当时我没有全身心投入学业——我原本应该那样做。我在你们这么大时，有点吊儿郎当。我做下一些难以让自己自豪的事，惹出不应有的麻烦。如果不走这些弯路，我的人生路会走得更轻松。”
“米歇尔家并不富裕”
奥巴马以妻子米歇尔的求学经历鼓励家境不佳的学生。“米歇尔的父母未曾上大学，没有多少钱。但他们努力工作，她勤奋学习，所以能进入美国最好的学校就读……也许你们中一些人的家人失去工作，生活不充裕……但种种不利环境不应成为你不做作业、不好好上学的理由。”他强调，“眼下境遇不决定你今后的地位……命运由你自己掌握。”

我知道，对你们很多人来说，今天是开学的第一天。
我知道你们有些人还在适应返校后的生活。但今天我来到这里，是因为有些重要的事情要和大家一起讨论。我来到这里，就是想和大家聊聊教育的问题，聊聊在这个新学年对你们大家有哪些期望。
1.恪尽职责
我想从你们对自身的责任谈起。你们每个人都有自己的长处，都有可以奉献的东西。你们对自己都有一种责任，那就是找出自己身上的这种东西，而教育恰好可以提供这种机会。
也许你可以成为一名大作家，但在你写出老师布置的那篇英语课论文之前，你或许并不知晓；也许你可以成为一名革新者或发明家，但在你完成科学课程设计之前，你或许并不知晓；也许你可以成为市长、参议员或最高法院的大法官，但在你加入学生会或者辩论队之前，你或许并不知晓。
不管你这一生想要做什么，我保证你都需要接受教育才能去做。你不可能辍了学就刚好能找到一份好工作。要找到好工作，你必须接受训练、刻苦努力并且不断学习。
2.没借口不去尝试
我知道，要在学校取得好成绩并不容易。我知道你们许多人在生活中都面临着各种挑战，使你们很难集中精力攻克学业。
我明白的。我知道你们的处境。在我两岁的时候，我父亲就离开了家，我是由单亲妈妈带大的。她不得不工作，有时候连支付各种账单都很困难，别的孩子有的东西，她也不能总是一样不差地买给我们。那时，我怀念生命中有父亲相伴的日子，也有过感到孤独、觉得自己与周围的环境格格不入的时候。
所以那时我也不总是专注于我的学业，像我应该做到的那样。我也做过一些令我无法引以为傲的事情，也曾遇到过很多不该有的麻烦。我的生活随时都有可能朝着更坏的方向发展。
但我是幸运的，我得到了许多再来一次的机会。我有机会上了大学，上了法学院，追逐自己的梦想。
你们有些人也许并没有这些有利条件。在你们的生活中，也许没有成年人为你们提供所需的支持。在你们家里，也许有人丢了工作，经济非常拮据。也许你所居住的居民区让你没有安全感，或者你有一些朋友在强迫你去做一些你明知道不对的事情。
但归根结底，生活境况—你的相貌好坏、你的出身高低、你的钱财多寡、你家的情况—一切的一切，都不能成为你疏忽学业、态度恶劣的借口。你没有任何借口可以和老师顶嘴、翘课或者放弃学业，没有任何借口可以不去尝试。
3.确立自己的目标
你现在所处的境况左右不了你将来的成就。没有人替你书写命运，因为你的命运要由你自己来书写。你的未来要由你自己来创造。
因此，今天我呼吁各位明确自己来上学的目标，然后竭尽所能去实现这些目标。你的目标可以非常简单，比如完成所有的家庭作业、上课注意听讲或者每天花时间读一本书等等。或许你决定要参加某项课外活动，或在你的社区做一名志愿者。或许你决定在某些孩子因出身或相貌遭受戏弄或欺侮时挺身而出，因为你和我一样坚信，所有的年轻人都需要一个安全的学习环境。或许你决定要对自己更好一点，从而以更好的状态学习。但不管你决心要做什么，我都希望你能做出承诺。我希望你能全力以赴。
4.以失败为良师
我知道，有的时候你会从电视节目中得到这样一种印象，那就是一个人不用做任何努力就可以发家致富、功成名就—你认为通往成功的入场券就是练练饶舌艺术、玩玩篮球或者成为电视真人秀明星。而实际上，你们十有八九都不会从事其中任何这样的工作。
事实是，成功来之不易。你不可能喜欢你所学的每一门课，也不可能和教你的每一位老师都投缘。并非每一次家庭作业都和你此时此刻的人生完全有关。第一次的尝试也未必都能成功。
这很正常。在这个世界上，有些最为成功的人往往就是失败次数最多的人。比如J.K.罗琳，她的第一部小说《哈利·波特与魔法石》在最终得以出版前曾被退稿12次。迈克尔·乔丹在中学时曾被校篮球队除名。在他的篮球生涯中，他曾输掉过几百场比赛，也曾数千次投篮不中。但他曾说过：“我这辈子曾一而再、再而三地失败过，而这就是我成功的原因。”

5.永远不要自暴自弃
没有人生来就无所不能。只有通过刻苦努力，你才会变得有所专长。没有谁第一次接触一项新运动就能进入校队参加比赛，没有谁第一次唱歌就能把所有的音都唱准，必须要勤学苦练才行。同样的道理也适用于你的家庭作业。一道数学题你也许要做很多遍才能解开。某些文字你也许要读上很多遍才能领会其含义。一篇论文，你肯定要打过几遍草稿才能定稿上交。
不要害怕提出问题。在你需要帮助的时候，不要害怕寻求帮助。寻求帮助不是懦弱的表现，而是力量的象征，因为这表明遇到不懂的地方你敢于承认，这样你才能有机会学习新知识。因此，找一个你信得过的成年人—父母、祖父母、老师、教练或者辅导员—请他们帮助你，让你不走弯路，实现你的目标。

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school.And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous.I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now--(applause)--with just one more year to go.And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.我知道，今天是你们很多人开学的日子。对于进入小学预备班、初中或高中的学生，今天是你们来到新学校的第一天，心里可能有点紧张，这是可以理解的。我能想象有些毕业班学生现在感觉很不错——（掌声）——还有一年就毕业了。不论在哪个年级，你们有些人可能希望暑假更长一点，今天早上还能多睡一小会儿。
I know that feeling.When I was young, my family lived overseas.I lived in Indonesia for a few years.And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.我了解这种感觉。我小时候，我们家生活在海外。我在印度尼西亚住了几年。我妈妈没有钱送我上其他美国孩子上的学校，但她认为必须让我接受美式教育。因此，她决定从周一到周五自己给我补课。不过她还要上班，所以只能在清晨四点半给我上课。

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school.And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous.I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now--(applause)--with just one more year to go.And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.我知道，今天是你们很多人开学的日子。对于进入小学预备班、初中或高中的学生，今天是你们来到新学校的第一天，心里可能有点紧张，这是可以理解的。我能想象有些毕业班学生现在感觉很不错——(掌声)——还有一年就毕业了。不论在哪个年级，你们有些人可能希望暑假更长一点，今天早上还能多睡一小会儿。
I know that feeling.When I was young, my family lived overseas.I lived in Indonesia for a few years.And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.我了解这种感觉。我小时候，我们家生活在海外。我在印度尼西亚住了几年。我妈妈没有钱送我上其他美国孩子上的学校，但她认为必须让我接受美式教育。因此，她决定从周一到周五自己给我补课。不过她还要上班，所以只能在清晨四点半给我上课。

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school.And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous.I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now--(applause)--with just one more year to go.And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.I know that feeling.When I was young, my family lived overseas.I lived in Indonesia for a few years.And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early.And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table.But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.”(Laughter.)

Now, I’ve given a lot of speeches about education.And I’ve talked about responsibility a lot.I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working, where students aren’t getting the opportunities that they deserve.But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world--and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.Every single one of you has something that you’re good at.Every single one of you has something to offer.And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is.That’s the opportunity an education can provide.Maybe you could be a great writer--maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper--but you might not know it until you write that English paper--that English class paper that’s assigned to you.Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor--maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine--but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class.Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice--but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it.You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? Don’t be afraid to ask questions.Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.I do that every day.Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and that then allows you to learn something new.So find an adult that you trust--a parent, a grandparent or teacher, a coach or a counselor--and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, don’t ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough.It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.It’s the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and they founded this nation.Young people.Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war;who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon.Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google and Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.So today, I want to ask all of you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a President who comes here in 20 or 50 or 100 years say about what all of you did for this country?
