第一篇:语言纯洁性英文演讲稿
英语1101 周希劢 26
Many of the English words we use today are borrowed from French, for example, rendezvous, bourgeoisie, and, what we recently learned in our Integrated English class, gourmet. So, while I am learning French, I always love to make notes in English because it helps to memorize French words. But a French teacher, or any of the French speakers, will never allow me to do so.Because they believe that Linguistic Purism is one of the most important issues in language. But what I’m talking about here today is that to exaggerate the development of language and improve its charm, we should motive language interaction instead of blindly sticking to linguistic purism I shall start with a story. This is Jacques Chirac, the former president of France.Once in an international economic seminar held in Paris, a minister from French government delivered a speech in English without saying anything in French. After his speech Jacques Chirac stepped forward and said to him:” Sir, why did you speak English but not French?” The minister answered nervously,“ Because, Mr.President, English is the language for commerce.” The President darted him an angry glare, turned round and walked away.In French, people keep emphasizing that they should defend the purity of their language. They are totally intolerant of any other foreign languages. They say “no” to English words, German words, Spanish words and Chinese words. Thus the vocabulary of French has remained same for centuries while that of many other nations are getting larger and larger. With French getting less competitive, it no more serves as an official language in international organizations as it did decades ago.Sometimes French people have to use foreign words although they are not willing to.One of the popular talk shows in France is named “le talk” instead of “le conversation” Many young people in French would love to say “bye-bye” instead of “Au revoir”.In spite of the strong will of French people to maintain the purity of their language, the young generation in France is facing an inevitable trend that foreign languages influences’ are getting larger. It’s obvious that sticking to Linguistic Purism does not always help.Let’s come to Chinese now.Look at the Chinese words listed below. How many of them do you think are borrowed from Japanese? Yes.They are all from Japanese. You must have already known that Japanese is originated from Ancient Chinese. But actually Chinese is also borrowing words and expressions from Japan.China and Japan do have conflicts in many aspects, but we still share same words and learn from the culture of each other. As one of the Chinese-speakers, I’m proud to say that we are providing other languages a friendly and tolerant environment. The boy in this picture is a student of Confucius Institution in Teheran, Iran. He’s been learning Chinese for two years and he’s planning to find a job in China. There are many other students like him in other parts of the world.Chinese people popularize Mandarin through various organizations like Confucius Institution and, at the meantime, learn from foreign languages and foreign cultures. Thanks to the language interaction, Chinese is get more and more popular in the world.By studying the different attitudes Chinese and French hold on Linguistic Purism and the current situation of these two languages, we can easily draw a conclusion that nowadays if we keep protecting our language by rejecting the influences of other languages;our language can hardly survive and finally vanish from the earth.
