如英语口语中的 “What is he?”并不是指字面的意义“他是什么?”而是英语中习惯用这句话来询问“他是干什么(工作的)? ”。我们这里要讨论的英语成语是狭义范围的“idiom”,指的是英语中长期以来习用的,表达完整意义的,结构定型的固定词组或短语。
按照词与词之间组合的搭配的紧密程度,词组可以分为两大类:自由词组和固定词组。自由词组,是人们在交际时为了表达某个概念而把词和语法规则临时搭配起来的词组,如read a book,an English word, on the desk, run fast.等。和自由词组相对的固定词组,有固定形式和固定意义,表达一个完整的意思,有时也称为成语,可以分为三大类:纯成语,半成语。纯成语是一种约定俗成的由两个以上单词组成的非字面意义的词语。如by the skin of one’s teeth,和牙齿无关。半成语中的单词有一个或更多可以从字面理解,但同时也至少有一个单词是不能从字面理解的。如foot the bill.字面意义的成语在语义上没有纯成语和半成语复杂。如on foot,no pains;no gains.不但因语言不同而相异,就是同一种语言也会随着时代的发展而变化。
Not only because the language is different, but also the same language will change with the development of the times.人们普遍认同这样的疑问句式和否定句式
People generally agree with such questions and negative sentences.但这种缺少助动词“do”的结构
But the lack of a verb “do” structure

Is contrary to modern English language habits

The scope of the concept of Idiom is more extensive than that of Chinese.因为idiom还包括谚语,俚语,明喻,暗喻,典故,搭配等
Because idiom also includes proverbs, slang, simile, metaphor, allusion, collocation etc.现代的英汉词典基本上都将idiom翻译成为 “成语”

Idiom
Neither do men put new wine into old bottles, else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out,and hot-tles perish, but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved”(也没有人把新酒装在I日皮袋里。
如“to act the part of a Trojan Horse”(里应外合)这一习语中,”Trojan horse'即典出希腊传说。
