美国大学生暑假干什么

美国大学一般在五月的第一、二周就开始放假，一直要到了八月的最后一个星期、甚至九月初才开学，在这接近四个月的暑假期间里美国的大学生都在干什么了呢？在刚开学的这段时间里，我得以有机会和手下的二十几个学生助理交谈并了解了他（她）们的暑假生活，写下来作为美国大学生整体暑期生活的一个缩影吧。

少数学生选择在五到六月期间选课。

美国大学多设有夏季学期，一般八到十个星期长，在此期间学校会开设一些在春秋学期里比较热门的课程，给转换专业或希望提前毕业的学生趁暑期时选修。有些学生或者选择留校选课，或者选择回家在就近的学校选相当的课程然后把学分转回自己所在的大学。而不管是否选课，美国大学生在暑期都会打工的，而打工性质也因他们个人的年级、专业、和将来的打算而有所不同。

刚读完一年级的学生打工的性质多种多样。

学生中有打定主意本科毕业后进医学院的，于是年初早早就开始申请医生诊所、救护车队、和医院等的夏季实习生位置，这样的位置竞争很厉害，有些是有报酬的，而有些纯粹是义工，主要是为了将来申请医学院时个人简历里能有相关的工作经历和业界的推荐人。美国医学院录取要求很高，竞争激烈，相关的工作经验和执业人员的推荐信是录取时一个重要的参考因素。同样的情况也出现在法律界，丫丫爸爸只有一个夏季实习生的位置，却有接近七十个打算考法学院的在校生申请。

学生中有打算将来进美国国家机构的，他们多把目标锁定在申请政府专设的夏季实习生位置上，我的学生助理中就有一个被录用在五角大楼做夏季实习生的，据她说报酬还好，除了支付自己整个夏季的消费之外，还到海边玩了一个星期。她特别和我强调，钱还不是最重要的，重要的是确认了这是自己将来要做的职业、锻炼了自己的能力、并建立了必要的人脉关系，这对将来找工作是十分重要的。

除了为自己将来升学和就业的考虑之外，也有人暑假打工纯粹是为了挣钱的，有个学生每天打两个工，白天在游泳馆做救生员，晚上在一家酒吧当服务生，据他说晚上的工作小费很多，虽然很辛苦，但存下了一些钱，这样一方面可以少借上学的贷款，也可以减轻父母的负担，他的父母虽然不富裕，却是尽其所能帮助孩子支付部分上学消费的家长，而穷人的孩子早当家，这个学生也是我所有的学生助理中最负责和懂事的一个，尤其是懂得未雨绸缪，属于那种你告诉他一步、他会考虑到第二步、甚至第三步的学生。

读完二、三年级的学生多选择做一段时间的科研。

读完二年级、尤其是三年级后多数人对将来的打算已经有谱，不准备进研究生院的人打工和以前一样，面向准备毕业寻职的人脉建立或者单纯赚钱，而准备进研究生院的人则已经开始考虑做些科研好出篇文章，为能被研究生院录取甚至拿到奖学金而增加砝码了。

美国大学本科的暑期阶段常有政府资助的本科生科研项目，其中最著名的是“本科生科研经验”、英文简称为REU（ResearchExperience for Undergraduates）的项目。这个项目由本人提出申请，申请人可以是跨校，也不必是在读的本科生，关键是对项目中的课题有自己独到的想法。REU由专门的评选委员会讨论录取，一经录用，一般会支付八到十个星期的科研奖学金，数目较高，可以保证专心研究，若能出来一篇会议或者刊物文章的话，对申请研究生院是很重要的砝码，对马上升四年级即将面临申请的学生来说，这机会尤其重要。

除了美国的大学之外，美国政府和军队的研究部门也有类似以研究为主的夏季实习生位置，还有些大公司也有，比如我以前供职过的杜邦公司研发部就有这样的位置。可以设想如果夏季能得到这样的位置并表现突出的话，将来毕业进入这些单位工作或深造的几率会增加很多。

当然这些项目都进不去的话，有些学生也出于兴趣或需要选择一个导师做义工科研，当然他们还得另外打工支付自己的消费，但也不排除表现好导师后来决定支付一些工资的可能，正如美国俗话说的：“最重要的是能踏进去一只脚，这样才会有走进门的机会”。

休假旅游

夏季休假和旅游对很多学生来说是一种奢侈，因为美国大学生都是成年人了，绝大多数不会再跟父母一起出游，所以要出去玩的话或者父母作为礼物为孩子们支付，或者自己打工赚足了钱约几个朋友一起出去玩。我的学生助理们在暑假都出去玩了一趟，有去海边住酒店吃饭馆的，也有去山里野炊野营的，钱多钱少量力而行，但绝对不输心情。

现在开学了，这些学生们返回到学校，一边学习一边合理安排时间继续在我部门打工做各门课程的助理工作，既挣了生活消费又积累了工作经验，写在简历里对将来求职和申请研究生院都是有影响的砝码，读到这里你完全可以想象，到了毕业时这些孩子的自理和自立能力多数已经非常成熟，对申请工作的程序已经颇有经验，对自己的兴趣和目标更是心中有数，简历厚重了，有了一些自己的人脉关系，到了这时候不论是工作还是进研究生院，他们的综合后劲便开始显现出来了。

现如今，越来越多的华裔大学生开始走进美国大学的校门，他们多数成绩优异，一心读书，希望将来能找到一份好工作。但现实却是，这些华裔大学生常被美国同学称为“书呆子”，他们从小只管读书，不够独立，没有参加社会实践的意识，生怕浪费学习时间，因此表现出没有团队精神，更不关心现实和政治。但是，在美国就业时光成绩好是不够的，招人单位更注重的是综合能力和多方面的素质，比如人际关系、服务意识、语言和形象等，做到这一点的关键是要了解美国社会，而暑假打工就是很重要的一个途径，融入美国社会和成绩优秀是同样重要的。

当弱势不再弱势

心路独舞

最近听说了一个案例，让我想起了去年写的《当法规让人自危》（见后）。

事情的起因是某系上学期雇来一位只教几门课的半时雇员做实验课的老师，女性，中东移民，在美国曾获得硕士学位。课程的是“1xx”数量级的，属于基础课，原本很容易“对付”，但因为授课方式的原因，也因为为人处世的能力，渐渐和学生搞僵。过程不表了，只说矛盾激化到最后，某学生用iPhone将其在课堂上的表现录了下来，上传到了youtube上面，并抗议到系里、学院、乃至学校。鉴于事情比较棘手，加上情节的确有些恶劣，于是该教师被马上解职，几个人只好紧急“救场”替课到学期末。

如果事情到此为止也就罢了，但此教师却没有罢休。她首先抗议到学院的院长，说系里的解职决定是对学生的纵容，对她是不公平的。于是该系不得不花时间去写报告、罗列所有的证据以证明决定是基于她的表现而不是学生的一面之词。

她没有停手，而是又根据学校教师手册某项条款，继续上诉到学校，于是从系里到学院又一次不得不重复前一次操作，写报告到学校，直到校长亲自回复，谁都以为事情到此就该结束了，可惜没有。

事实是，她又根据美国关于雇佣时种族平等、性别平等的条例将此事抗议到劳动仲裁部门，抗议对她的解雇决定是种族和性别歧视，造成了新一轮的调查。虽然调查结果证实了上述指控不成立，但是事情连续折腾了几个月，大家都耗费了很多的时间和精力。

写到这里，我突然想起了我在公司工作的一件事情，那时候我是公司一个部门的主管，下面有个非裔技工表现不好，每次批评她时，她特别喜欢打“种族”牌，这让我之前的主管都很头痛，因为在美国这毕竟是很敏感的问题。到了某次我实在忍不下去了，于是和她正面交锋：“你必须马上改观，否则我们可以中止你的合同。论少数民族我也是，论女性我也是，某些王牌到了我这里会失效的，你想好。”恶法恶治，最后事情马上改观。当现行法律让某些弱势找到利用的漏洞，变得不再弱势，你会怎么办呢？

当法规让人自危

前几天下班的时候，天突然下起了暴雨，一瞬间地流成河，车过的时候，明显地感觉到有点水上漂的倾向，以致后来我无法前行，停在了路边等待最猛烈的风暴过了再开，不过这是后话。当时我正往校门外开去，大雨倾泻而下，四五米以外，我看不见任何人和物，雨刷拼命地刷，却对能见度丝毫没有帮助，我甚至将车的控制调整到了“weather control”（天气控制键，作者译），但是我依旧感觉得到轮子有水上漂的感觉，我在竭力控制着车的平稳，试图寻找一个安全的地方停下来等待这一阵风暴袭击的过去。就在这时，隐约中我看见一个年轻男子的模糊身影在雨中拼命地奔跑，似乎在寻找一个地方躲避这突来的暴雨，仔细辨认下我发现这是我手下的一个学生助理，我本能的反应是打开车门让他进来，然后我的手突然停了下来，把欲吐出来的呼喊咽了回去。

其实给公立大学工作的人都知道，州公立大学的工资水平是远远无法与公司和企业比的，但是州雇员除了福利很好之外，有一条突出的好处就是工作的稳定性，如果没有违法、没有极其不称职的工作表现，一般来说拿到州立大学的正式位置想干到退休的话，都是可以如愿的。违法的事情比较好解释，在美国一般

指 criminal conviction（判决犯罪，注意这里不是被指控违法，美国在被判决违法之前都认为你是无辜的，作者注），民事纠纷如果不影响 work ethnics（职业道德）的话，一般不影响工作。工作极度不称职的情形也可以想象，但是有一条基本上只要触犯了，很容易被开除，就是和学生有任何 romantic involvement（浪漫的关系，作者译）。原本这是一个很好证明的事情，但是几年前另外一个州的一个男教授和一个女学生在教授车里，行驶的时候被其他人看见了，用手机拍了照片，而这个女学生恰恰在教授所教的课程里得了A，看见他们的人或许出于个人的目的将教授控告到学校，说他 take advantage of disadvantaged（利用处于不利位置的学生，作者译），惹起了一场调查，花了不少律师费，耗费了将近一年的时间，教授几乎失去终身教职，最后千辛万苦才将自己的清白夺回来（感谢美国的司法系统）。这件事情发生以后，大家做事情开始三思起来，随意给需要的异性学生搭车的事情，只要是一对一，一般都会找个理由推掉。说到这里，你就可以理解了我最后时分的放弃，看着自己的学生在雨中挣扎，却不能伸出援助的手，我的感觉真的有些很悲凉。

所有对学生有“生杀”权力的教学位置在雇用的时候，都和学校签了合同，明白地申明了不能和学生有任何的romantic involvement（浪漫的卷入，一般泛指谈恋爱、性关系、或者说桃色的关系，作者译注），但问题是，学生、尤其是漂亮的女学生很会利用自己的资本，取悦于男老师，以得到好一些的分数，如果分寸得当，无伤大雅，别人也没什么可说的，但有的时候美国女孩子也很“生猛”主动的，这个时候究竟谁是 disadvantaged（不利位置的，作者译）位置的人，还真难说。若是有的男教授不买情，再被反咬一口，会不会有嘴说不清呢？于是，多数的大学教师在和学生交往的时候很注意分寸，Office Hour（公开办公时间，一般是所教的课程公开答疑的时间，作者译注）的时候，办公室门大开（一般大学教师都是一个人一个办公室），有的时候学生想关上门说要谈一些不想别人听见的事情，很多时候我会告诉他们：既然是这么重要，需要私下讲，是不是回去专门写个邮件，也让我有一个文字版本。这样就可以避免关起门来谈事情，以给别人想象的借口。更复杂的是，你要是以为以上的担忧只限于异性之间，那你就大错特错了，在今天同性恋见怪不怪的美国，哪怕一个同性搭车或者关起门来在办公室里，都可能成了某种猜测的借口，最好的办法就是彻底透明了。在这样一种明确的规定中，老师手中的这一点小小的权力，成了学生面前可怜的优势，反而让我们学会了自危，采取各种可能的办法保护自己的清白了。你或许会说，美国不是法律很健全的国家吗？大不了打官司还个清白。没错，是的，美国的法律的确很健全，法律体系也很公正，但是你得有时间、金钱和精力去打官司，我们这样的小城市一个好律师也要三百多美元一小

时，一个案子下来成千上万的说不准，还有一般从备案到上庭到最后判决拖个一两年是常事，中间的过程是很折磨人的。我曾亲眼见过一对夫妻手携手开始打官司，中间经受不起精神压力分道扬镳，两年后案子虽然赢了，却百感交加，当初要奋争的目标已经不在了。美国法律是很公正，但是不是每个人都有这个实力经历这一切。写到这里，本来可以结束了。我突然想起了南京青年彭宇和徐老太那一场闹剧和最后的判决，这个恩将仇报的事件曾经轰动了南京、轰动了全国、继而传到了海外。相传有个网友炮制了一个“救助宝典”，大致精神是：看见徐老太太倒下后，先去找个相机或者摄像机把当时的情形拍下来，然后再找当时在场的人写下目击证明，然后再起草一份《救助协议书》，说清楚是徐老太自己倒下的，让她签字画押。做完这一系列工作之后，才能考虑开始救助行动，如果这时候徐老太还活着的话。

当法律和现实让人在做好事的时候要首先自危、考虑怎么保护自己，难道这不够悲哀吗?

二、成绩增送

托福网考向考生指定的四所学校免费送出正式成绩报告。如需将成绩给这四所之外的学校，您可申请每份120元的成绩增送服务。通过“查看已注册信息”就可申请此项服务，申请前请确认您已支付成功或您的帐户余额充足，请您保证送分学校信息的正确性。同时，如果您申请了向学校或机构寄送成绩单(包括免费和付费申请)，则不能对该次考试成绩提出复议。请注意，复议期间成绩冻结，不能申请成绩增送服务。

成绩增送服务在考试结束后即可申请，考生登陆‘我的首页’点击‘查看已注册信息’可选择成绩‘增送’服务或在主页左侧‘查看成绩’中选择‘增送成绩单’，ETS承诺额外成绩单将在考生提交申请后4-7天由ETS寄出。

三、个人成绩单

通常情况下，考生可在考试结束约15个工作日后登陆报名网站查询成绩(可能有少许例外)。ETS正式打印的成绩单随后将通过快递寄送到考生报名时提交的中文地址。考生个人账户中将提供快递单号供考生去查询。

四、寄送查询

如果要查询所申请的学校是否收到成绩单，目前只能通过与学校确认，一般美国境内的大学10天左右可以收到ETS寄出的成绩单，超过两个星期最好找ETS询问成绩寄送情况。
