The marriages of four couples
My view on marriage and love
Body:As we all know, if you know something about the author's background, you will appreciate the book on a profounder and better level. The book first published in 1813, as Jane Austen’s second novel, she started it 1796 as her first persevering effort for publication. She finished the original manuscript by 1797 in Steventon, Hampshire, where she lived with her parents and siblings in the town rectory.Austen originally called the story First Impressions, but it was never published under that title;instead, she made extensive revisions to the manuscript, then retitled and eventually published it as Pride and Prejudice.Austen in this novel was full of wit and humor reflected the late eighteenth Century, early nineteenth Century British country customs and living ways of the world, to give the art of imagination.(writing background)
The book is mainly to tell the four couples’ marriages in eighteenth Century. One of the most important is naturally occurred between actress Elizabeth Bennet and actor Fitzwilliam Darcy about their hate and love.Elizabeth is a courageous, beautiful, smart, sturdy and lovable middle-class woman who pursues true love ignoring money and power. The story develops mainly relies on Elizabeth and Darcy, from the beginning of aversion to respect then love. Also, alternates in stories happen around Elizabeth’s happy or unhappy marriages to reveal the author’s hope living in true love at that era.The heroine Elizabeth first saw the male protagonist Darcy is not pleasing to her eyes, plus Darcy’s pride character causes Elizabeth to have prejudice against him.Darcy is unpopular arrogant man, even in the surrounding filled up cold relationship. For him, pride may be rational, however;prejudice may be heartless, both of which impact is unavoidable.Between two people there are often quarries and misunderstandingsconcerning Darcy’s pride and Elizabeth’s prejudice at the start. But after the events of clarification, they develop a little affection gradually.Darcy represents the “pride”, Elizabeth represents “prejudice”.At first, they are all controlled by their bad emotions------“pride and prejudice”.Then a series of unfavorable rumors to Darcy make Elizabeth have a stronger objection to him.when Darcy proposes to Elizabeth but is rejected, he says:” If I play a little means, my inner contradictions disguised, blindly to compliment you, make you believe me both in the understanding, thinking and other aspects, is all for you with unconditional pure love, maybe you will not have these harsh scold.Unfortunately, no matter what kind of camouflage, I hate.” Darcy has not changed his arrogant disposition in order to please Elizabeth, Elizabeth shows herself truly as well.Neither of them is deliberately to create good impressions, but is truly to show their inner sides.Elizabeth has been living in her own prejudice and ignored the truth, after Darcy’s interpretation and her
judgment, finally found happiness.(Primary coverage)
Jane Austen said of Elizabeth Bennet:” I have to admit, I think she is the happiest and the very cheerful character in the book. Will I tolerate a person I don’t love like her? I really do not know.” Indeed, I agree that Elizabeth is the happiest one who is smart and wit, courage, long-sighted, strong self-esteem as well as good at thinking. As for Darcy, she seems to have some arbitrary bias.In this paper, the prejudice refers to the middle-class, well-educated and wit woman------Elizabeth’s mental weakness. And the so-called pride refers to a wealth, high-educated, sharp-eyed young man------Darcy’s personality weakness. The very pride and prejudice make their road to marriage twisted and turned. The hero and heroine’s progress to marriage sometimes proceeds and sometimes draws back just like the gesture when they dance together. The first chapter in this novel, Darcy answers to his friend’s feeling towards Elizabeth says:” She is OK, but not charming enough to tempt me.And I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men” Darcy’s contemptuous word makes Elizabeth very embarrassed, which becomes the topic in the next dance ball. However she can still be happy when she talks the matter to her friends.Judging from that, Elizabeth can be in her best spirits and capture laugh points in everything. As a matter of fact, Elizabeth is heavily prejudiced against Darcy in the next ball, in the meanwhile, people present in the ball give him a judge:” he is one of the most unpleasant and pride person in the world. All hope that he would not come here”.The hero and heroine’s fate is only beginning at the party, it is the Elizabeth’s sister and Darcy’s friend Bingley’s love that indirectly promotes Darcy and Elizabeth feelings. They meet frequently at Bingley’s.Although the dialogs between them are often pride and prejudiced, Elizabeth’s natural characters make Darcy unable to control his affection to her. This also reflects Darcy’s gentleman side. The novel is fun and ups and downs, with Elizabeth’s prejudice toward Darcy grow day by day, the appearance of Gorge Wickham pushes the plot forwards.Gorge Wickham------A dashing, handsome young soldier who attracts the attention of Elizabeth Bennet. His father was the manager of the Darcy estate, so he grew up with Mr.Darcy and his sister.Though he is cared well by Darcy's father, there is bitter enmity between him and Darcy, due to his attempt to elope with Georgiana Darcy for her substantial inheritance.Wickham put all his mistakes to Darcy which further deepens Elizabeth’s prejudice against Darcy. This event occurs most probably because Elizabeth is too care about her image in the eyes of others. At Darcy’s first proposal to Elizabeth, she refuses and says:” From the beginning, from the first moment I saw you, you let me show a feel a self-conceited manner, your self-esteem, you don’t respect others’ feeling of egoistic. From my unhappiness with you based, after the accident, I feel you are the man I am not willing to marry to.” He is very polite to her refusal, come to resuce Elizabeth’s sister and urge Jane and Bingley’s marriage.Thereafter there seems to be the plot and character inversion.Elizabeth believes that Wickham is the most suitable for marriage, nearly ruined herself. It is Darcy’s patience and understanding to save her from the dangerous edge.Elizabeth really understands Darcy, admits his extreme prejudice. Finally they clean up misunderstandings and get married. In the final analysis, Elizabeth uses her own unique charm to win happiness. As for Fitzwilliam Darcy, The son of a wealthy, well-established family and the master of the great estate of Pemberley, Darcy is Elizabeth’s male counterpart. The narrator relates Elizabeth’s point of view of events more often than Darcy’s, so Elizabeth often seems a more sympathetic figure. The reader eventually realizes, however, that Darcy is her ideal match.Intelligent and forthright, he too has a tendency to judge too hastily and harshly, and his high birth and wealth make him overly proud and overly conscious of his social status.Indeed, his haughtiness makes him initially bungle his courtship. When he proposes to her, for instance, he dwells more on how unsuitable a match she is than on her charms, beauty, or anything else complimentary. Her rejection of his advances builds a kind of humility in him.Darcy demonstrates his continued devotion to Elizabeth, in spite of his distaste for her low connections, when he rescues Lydia and the entire Bennet family from disgrace, and when he goes against the wishes of his haughty aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, by continuing to pursue Elizabeth.Darcy proves himself worthy of Elizabeth, and she ends up repenting her earlier, overly harsh judgment of him.Mr.Bennet------an English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He is married with five daughters, a circumstance injurious to his family. The terms of Mr.Bennet's inheritance require a male heir.Because he has no son, upon his death, his property must go to his closest male relative, Mr.Collins, a clergyman who provides him with much amusement.Mr.Bennet, a gentle if eccentric man, is very close to his two eldest daughters, Jane and particularly Elizabeth. However, he has a poor opinion of the intelligence and sensibility of his wife and three youngest daughters, frequently declaring them “silly” and visiting them with insulting remarks as well as gentle teasing.Mrs.Bennet------the querulous wife of Mr.Bennet.Her main concern in life is seeing her daughters married well. She angles for her new neighbor, Mr.Bingley, as a match for one of them. She also hopes for a match between one of her girls and Mr.Collins himself.(Analysis of major characters)
The first marriage------a happy one(Darcy and Elizabeth). The author reflects that only if a marriage experiences with suffers and setbacks, can it be happy. The second marriage------a romantic one(Jane and Bingley)
They fall in love with each other at first sight. This kind of marriage is full of romantic feature. The third marriage------a little bit sorrow but wise one(Charlotte and Collins)Charlotte is an ordinary-looking woman but she has her own opinion when it comes to marriage. As Elizabeth, she looks forward to truth love.Although she is no less beautiful than Elizabeth, she is lucky that she finds Collins who can offer her happiness, wealth and rights. As for Collins, he does not love Charlotte as well, but he just wants a woman to get married not knowing what happiness really is.But both of them can reach their goals by this marriage. The last marriage------a blindfold one(Lydia and Wickham)
This marriage seems to be a game without love.Lydia chooses Wickham who seems handsome but ugly in inner just to satisfy her vanity. As for Wickham, he just wants money so as to marry to Lydia. What a ridiculous and woeful marriage it is!(The marriages of four couples)
Love seems to be the perpetual theme all over the world. But actually what is love? For most girls in 20s, love may mean everything to them. They seek for love bravely no matter what difficulties they may face.In their eyes, love is pure or even holy. However, those are just an ideal situation in the real life;people tend to find a balance between love and property.Pride and prejudice is Austen’s great work.Through the discussion of the different marriages and love, she demonstrates her concept about love and marriage: love and marriage is closely associated with property and society, however, love and marriage can not only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection, respect and the same interest. She rejects the marriage based only on wealth.Different people have different ideas upon marriage.By the description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen fully expresses her views on love and marriage.Only by appreciating the marriage founded on the basis of mutual understanding and true love, but also by satirizing the marriage founded on the basis of origin and desire. The marriage based on social position and money can’t bring happiness in life.Aimless marriage and love are unpractical.Everything goes wrong for poor couples.Marriage based on wealth is not a fault. At least, it can offer us a better condition of life.Property is not everything in the life but without it, we can do nothing. This is called reality. But if you only married for wealth, you sell your liberty. The rest of your life might be miserable, and your marriage will filled with endless bitterness.Among those four kinds of marriage, I prefer to the first one.As far as I’m concerned, the meaning of living is to suffer from various kinds of sufferings and happiness. On the way of pursuing love, we must strengthen our conviction.Do not make a hasty decision just because of money and power, we should make attempts to search for true love.If the weakness of the other is fragrant and that can’t be changed, you should be decisive to give up.Of course, you should cherish the other, happiness needs to be managed.(My view on marriage and love)

Some Thoughts of Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice, in my memory, is the first foreign novel I have seen.It leads me to read more foreign works, broaden my vision, deepen my recognition and lets me have a new
understanding of love and marriage.Jane Austin, the “Most Perfect Female Artist”, the author of the Pride and Prejudice, with her female's unique meticulous observation, represented a truthful picture of their little world around themselves, especially the marriage and the love storm between the gentleman and the lady. The style of her work is easy, humorous, and imbued with comic conflict. Thus, her works are popular with readers all around the world.Pride and Prejudice is a classic one of those.“Pride and Prejudice” is one of the most famous masterpieces written by Jane Austin, which was first published in January 1813.Jan Fergus calls it “her most popular novel, both with the public and with her family and friends”.It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature. In 2003, the BBC conducted the largest ever poll for the “UK's Best-Loved Book” in which Pride and Prejudice came second, behind The Lord of the Rings. What’s more, looking at Jane Austin’s novels, we find that irony is the key stone which supports her art building. In Pride and Prejudice, I think, irony is one of the most fascinating characteristics appealing to readers.Meanwhile, in the history of English literature, it was the one which comprehensively discussed the situation and problems of the women status, claiming that women independent personality, equal right, and putting up that the female consciousness and thoughts is progressing with the developmentof the society for the first time. The great work not only attracted a large number of readers at that time, but also has a great many fans now because it providesthe readers with unique artistic taste of relaxation and comedy by using the irony and her witty humor, and retains a fascination for modern readers, though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century. In my opinion, the plot of the novel is driven by the particular situation of the Bennet family that Mr and Mrs Bennet have no sons and have only five daughters, which worries Mrs Bennet that she and her daughters have to leave home and have no income if Mr Bennet dies accidently. The character in this work impresses me deeply is its female leading role, Elizabeth Bennet, later Elizabeth Darcy.Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of her father, a country gentleman, living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. She is intelligent, lively, attractive, and witty. Her bravery and intelligence leads her to dare to challenge the secular, dare to pursue her love, and dare to refuse the person who offends her although that person is so good.As we all know that nobody is perfect, Eliza has a tendency to judge someone on first impression and perhaps would be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments. The sentences I like most are “Marriage should not be driven by thoughts of money” and “Only deep love will persuade me to marry”, a dialogue between her sister Jane and Elizabeth.I think it is not only her vision of love, but also the author’s.Moreover, Jane portrays four different types of love and marriage with a witty and humorous language in the work.Among them, the marriage between Elizabeth the hostess and Darcy the host is the most successful one. It’s also the perfect pattern of love and marriage that Jane Austen had dreamed of in her entire life.In her eyes, according to what I understand, a happy marriage should be combined with material, morality, sense and sensibility. All of them constitute perfect love and marriage. This perspective until today has high value.Synchronizing with the development of society, more and more love is just established in money and lust, not the pure love. This book shows the author Jane Austin’s pure mind. Here, I sincerely recommend you to read this book. The book is really giving us a baptism of the soul and lets us catch a glimpse of the real and pure love and marriage.

Impressions of Pride and Prejudice
I’ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen during this semester.Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. She was born in a mid-class family and was brought up in a comfortable environment with harmonious surroundings, so there’s not too many conflicts in her sight neither in her novel. In Pride and Prejudice she talked different ideas about love and marriage through different characters. The novel has told an interesting story: Mr.Bennet is an English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He has five unmarried daughters but no sons while his inheritance must be inherited by a male, so Mrs.Bennet has been keen to seek husband for her daughters with great enthusiasm. One day the Bennets had a new neighbor called Bingley who was a wealthy bachelor and followed be the target of Mrs.Bennet.At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who’s the oldest daughter of the Bennets.Bingley’s friend Darcy also came to the ball and struck the sights, many girls liked him while he thought all of them couldn’t suit his preference, including Elizabeth.Mr.Darcy always shows others a impression
of pride, having found this Elizabeth began to hate Mr.Darcy.Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett(second oldest daughter in the Bennets)because of her lovely behavior, while Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice about him.The official Wickham was welcomed by the villagers, and Elizabeth also took a shine to him.Wickham told Elizabeth that his father had been the steward of the Darcys. The old Darcy had regarded Wickham as his own son and showed more love to him than to Mr.Darcy.After the old Darcy died, the property should be inherited by Wickham was all deprived by Mr.Darcy, also was his pastorate. All this increased Eli’s prejudice about Mr.Darcy.At another ball Mr.Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him, but Eli refused him.Eli’s elder male cousin Mr.Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property by rules, he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets.Having known that Jane was already engaged with Mr.Bingley, he asked Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Eli’s friend.Mr.Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine.Once his
family was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine.Elizabeth also went there with Mr.Collin and Charllote. There she met Mr.Darcy who’s Lady Catherine’s nephew.Later in a garden, Sir William told Eli about Mr.Darcy’s latest act of dissuading Mr.Bingley’s marring Jane Bennet which caused Eli’s exceedingly anger. Then Mr.Darcy came to the Collins’ and confessed his love for Elizabeth, of course he was rejected impolitely.Afterwards Mr.Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove her misunderstandings of him.Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr.Darcy’s politeness.Gradually Eli’s prejudice of Mr.Darcy diappeared.Eventually they became couple. The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies’ different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems ,and this undoubtedly shows the writer’s idea about love and marriage: it’s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements.Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel by telling people that marriage should
be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli’s prejudice.Cause Darcy’s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn’t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy’s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli’s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Eli accepted his proposal. Those two opposite attitudes reflect female’s pursue of independent personality and equality.I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. There’re also Eli’s sisters’ love stories served as contrasts to the female subject’s ideal marriage, such as Charlotte and Collin’s life: they do had a luxury life, but there’s noreal love between them and this kind of marriage is surely a tragedy of society.
第四篇:傲慢与偏见英文读后感
The Most Beautiful Love
Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this movie is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities.Mrs.Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters.Mr.Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr.Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior.Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different.Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others.Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion.Mary likes reading classic books.(Actually she is a pedant.)Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia.Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century. The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book. The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”.The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.Pride and Prejudice was an absolutely fantastic film.A great cast, and Keira Knightly did an excellent job and Matthew Macfadyen was a wonderful in the role of Mr Darcy. The cinematography was so ridiculously good, there were some fantastic shots and the costumes were also fantastic. The script was fairly good, it is true to the classic by Jane Austen, Mr Wickam could have made more of an appearance, and had a striking resemblance to one Orlando Bloom. The movie moved fairly fast but trying to fit such a novel into two hours had to be hard anyway, so I say well done to all involved, as such a beloved book can be a hard project to take on, but after watching it I really can't wait until to see it again!!
第五篇:《傲慢与偏见》英文读后感
The abbreviation of the novel. This is a story happening in a Bennet.Mr.Bennet, a countryside gentleman in England, had no sons but five girls.According to the law, the girls in Bennet’s could not inherit their father’s fortune but could only get 5,000 pounds as dowry and the possession was to be inherited by Mr.Bennet’s nephew, Collins,square-toes and good at flattering flattery. So, how to help them marry a rich gentleman was the top agenda to Mrs.Bennet.And when Collins wanted to propose one of the girls in Bennet’ and he chose Elizabeth, for the eldest but most beautiful girl, Jane, was not available.Elizabeth refused him and he proposed her close friend, Charlotte.Although Charlotte did not like Collins, she married him for she was already 27.As for Jane, she met a handsome young man with a plenty of money named Mr.Bingley.They felt in love at first sight at a ball.Mr.Bingley showed great passion on Jane, while Jane did not though she did love him.Mr.Darcy, a very good friend of Mr.Bingley, was also a wealthy and attracted young man.At that ball,at first Mr.Darcy was very pride and prejudice to Elizabeth, but after dancing with her ,he felt in love with her.But Elizabeth did not like him because of his air.And Elizabeth treated Mr.Darcy worse because he persuaded Mr.Bingley to give up her sister, Jane.So at the first time when Mr.Darcy proposed, she refused.Lydia, Elizabeth another sister, was too young and innocent to tell a delusion and ran away with a young and handsome military officer,Wickham, who actually was a gambling addicts and had a numerous debt. When Mr.Darcy paid Wickham a lot of money to get Lydia a complete marriage, and managed to make Jane and Mr.Bingley get together, Elizabeth did not misunderstand him anymore and accepted his second proposal.Appreciation
‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’ The first sentence in the novel and sets the ground and tone for the novel.During that time some people were timeservers and flatters ,hypocritical and stupid, like Mr.s Bennet, while some were smart and independent, like Elizabeth. And this conflict makes the whole story full of humorousness and irony, and the readers think more beyond the lines, making the author outstanding at her age.Apart from that, Jane Austin’s concept of marriage, which we can refer from the lines, is totally different from the convention and has been attracted by the readers over the years.I think, there are two points in her new concept. The first one is that a marriage does need a monetary foundation but more importantly should be built on true love and self esteem. At that time a woman was supposed to marry a rich man although she did not like that man.So that’s why Mrs.Bennet asked Elizabeth to marry Collins. But Elizabeth refused for she did not like him. However, her friend Charlotte chose to married him because
Charlotte was too old to care about too much although Charlotte was also an acknowledged lady and could not regardless the convention. Therefore,in the author’s eyes, their marriage would not last for long because it was not built on love. So, the marriage, like Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy’s, should be encouraged, and we should be negative about marriage, only built on money, like Collins and Charlotte’s, Lydia and Wickham’s.The second is that women and men should be equal. From Elizabeth turning down Collins and Mr.Darcy,we can see that, in author’s mind, a marriage should not be decided by the man but both ,and women are not the accessories of men’s but should be independent, having their own feelings, voice and decisions. And this can reflect some ideas about Jane Austin’s feminism, which also has made her distinguish for years.I think this is also suitable for today.Women, having more power than ever, should be more independent not only in marriage but also in the society.
