·词汇
古今汉语相比较,差别最大的恐怕就词汇了。
(1)、从词的结构形式上看,古汉语词汇以单音节词为主,现代汉语词汇则以从音节词为主。了解了这一特点,就要昼避免把文言文中两个单音节词当作现代汉语中的一个双音节词来理解。如:“璧有瑕,请指示王”(《史记.廉颇蔺相如列传》)这里的“指示”就不能误认为是“上级对下级或长辈对晚辈说明处理某项问题的原则和方法”,因为从两个人的关系上看,蔺相如既不是秦王的上级,也不可能是秦王的长辈。如果作为两个单音节词来看,就好理解了,“指”是“指出”,“示”是“给......看”,“请批示王”,就是“请(让我)指出来给大王看”。这样,文意就贯通了。因此,在遇到与现代汉语双音词写法相同,但作为双音词来讲又讲不通或与上下文文意不贴切的情况,不妨试着当作单音词来解
当然,前面说古汉语词汇以单音节词为主,并不等于说古汉语中完全是单音节词,实际上,古汉语中不是有少量的不能拆开的双音节词的。我们不要把这些不能拆开的双音词,硬拆成单音词来理解。文言文中少数不能拆开的双音词大体包括以下几类:
联绵词 如:犹豫、仓皇、匍匐、窈窕
外来词 如:单于、可汗、葡萄、琵琶
偏义复词 如:存亡、公姥、作息、异同
特定称谓 如:布衣、社稷、天子、足下
遇到这类词语,切记不能拆双为单。
(2)、从内容上看,古今词义的发展变化则更大。除了日月山川牛羊等一些基本词汇外,绝大多数词语都发生了变化。这种变化大致有以下四种情况:
第一种,词义的扩大。有些词的意义,起初包含的范围狭小,后来范围扩大了。如:“登斯楼也,则有去国怀乡,忧谗畏饥,满目萧然,感极而悲者矣。”(范仲淹《岳阳楼记》)这里的“国”指的是“国都”,而现在我们所说的“国”则指的是“国家”,词义范围明显扩大。
第二种,词义的缩小。有些词的意义,起初包含的范围较大,后来缩小了。如:“耶娘妻子走相送,尘埃不见咸阳桥。”(杜甫《兵车行》)句中的“子”指的是子女,既可是男孩,也可是女孩。而现在的“子”,则只有“儿子”的意思了。
第三种,词义的转移。古汉语的一些词义,随着历史的发展,由原来的意思转变成新的意思。如:“老翁逾墙走,老妇出门看。”(杜甫《石壕吏》)这里的“走”,是“跑”的意思,而现代汉语中,“走”却变为“行走”了。
第四种,词语感情色彩的变化。古汉语中的一些词语,发展到现在,褒贬色彩发生了变化。例如:“存者且偷生,死者长已矣。”(杜甫《石壕吏》)句中“偷”,是“暂且”、“苟且”的意思,是中性词,而在现代汉语中“偷”是“盗窃”的意思,是贬义词。
一词多义现象,在现代汉语中较常见,在以单音节词为主的文言文中则更为普遍。尽可能多地掌握词语的多种义项,是学好文言文的关键。在多义词的诸多义项中,总有一个最基本的意义,我们称它为这个词的本义;这个词的其他义项,都是由这个本义引申而来的,叫做引申引;有时,一个词远有些义项与本义毫无相干,只是由于同音的缘故,被借作他用而产生,我们称这种义项为假借义。用打比方的方式形成的词义则叫比喻义。如:顾:本义是“回头”,其他如:“看”、“拜访”、“照顾”、“关心”、“顾虑”等义项都是由它引申而来的,都是“顾”的引申义。“但是”,“反而”两个义项与“回头”这个本义毫无关系,只是由于同音产生的假借义。干城:本义是“盾牌和城墙”,后来喻指国家的保卫者。用得久了,成为一个固定的词义,这就成了比喻义。如何确定词的本义呢?最直接的办法当然是查找工具书。《辞海》等工具书中,每个词的第一个义项往往就是它的本义。在没有工具书的情况下,可以从以下两个方面来推断。第一、是看这个词诸多义项之间,哪个是引申的起点。还以“顾”为例,在诸多义项中,除了,“但是”、“反而”这两个假借义外,其他义项的引申关系是:顾,回头─>看─>拜访─>关心─>思念......。这些义项都是由“回头”引申而来的,这里面引申的脉络是很明显的。第二、可根据字形推知本义。汉字的表意性决定了大多数字意都可从形体上推知。比如这个“顾”字,本是一个形声字,它的形旁是“页”。在甲骨文中,这个字写作“ ”,突出一个人的头部,凡从“页”的字,均与头有关,如:“颈”、“项”、“额”、“颧”、“颊”都是这样。因此,我们可以推知“顾”的诸多义项中,“回头”应该是它的本义。
尽管一词多义在文言文中相当普遍,但在具体的语言环境中,一个词却只能有一个义项。要确定一个词在某句话中的具体意义,就要根据上下文来判断了。在词语的分类上,古今汉语基本是相同的,都分成实词、虚词两大类,只不过古汉语习惯上把代词归入虚词类。学习实词,要掌握教材后面常见文言实词总表上列举的365个实词的多种意义和用法,学习虚词则要求从兼类情况多和用法灵活的角度掌握32个常用虚词。综上所述,词汇部分古今差别大,包含内容多,并且掌握的准确与否又直接影响到对文意的理解,因此,可以说词汇部分是文言文学习的灵魂。
