忍耐一下,镇静,别冲动

从字面意思来解释就是勒住你的马,停步不走。这个习惯用语是十九世纪马匹作为重要交通工具时的一个口令,用来要求赶马车的停下他的那些马匹。但是现在hold one’s horses被广泛应用在各种场合。让我们听个例子来琢磨它的含义。例:Dad, please hold your horses before you get mad at me.It was the other guy’s fault.The cop said so.His insurance company will have to pay for having the car fixed.这是个儿子跑回来告诉爸爸: 他开家里的那辆车闯了祸,但是他要求爸爸先别发火,耐心听他把事情说明白。原来警察说车祸的责任在对方,所以对方的保险公司得承担汽车的修理费用。

起源:Horses are registered at birth and the registration includes a record of their color.When a horse is sold, the registration is also transferred.Sometimes the color recorded on the registration may not match the actual color of the horse.The buyer may then suspect the horse is not the one in the registration.e.g.That’s a horse of a different color!那完全是另外一回事。10.beat a dead horse 鞭打死马(徒劳)11.You can take a horse to the water, but you can’t make him drink.带马到河边容易,逼马饮水难。

9.The sheep who talks peace with a wolf will soon be mutton.向狼乞求和平,很快就会变成羊肉(意指,切勿向敌人乞求和平)

Fish 鱼

1.a fish out of water 离水的鱼, 不得其所的人,形容对新环境的不融合 2.drink like a fish 喝起酒来不要命 3.fish in troubled waters 浑水摸鱼

4.Never offer to teach a fish to swim.[谚]不要班门弄斧。5.The best fish swim near the bottom.好鱼常在水底游。6.Go to the sea, if you would fish well.不入虎穴,焉得虎子。

Rabbit/Hare 兔子

1.as fast as a hare意思是“像野兔一样快”。兔子胆小,英语有短语as timid as a rabbit/hare,意思是“胆小如兔”,汉语则要说成是“胆小如鼠”。另一方面,汉语有些习语中的兔子,由于文化差异,在对应的英语习语中变成了别的动物。例如: It is a poor mouse that has only one hole.(相当于“狡兔三窟”,“兔子”变成“耗子”。)The fox preys farthest from home.(相当于“兔子不吃窝边草”,“兔子”变成“狐狸”。)2.as mad as a March hare 像三月的野兔一样发疯

三月是野兔发情的季节,March hare(三月的野兔)因为在交配期间行为怪异而被称为“发狂的兔子”,这个短语比喻 mentally ill或 very silly

2、公兔子叫做buck,母兔子则是doe——雄鹿雌鹿也是这俩词儿,另外buck大家应该很熟悉,在俚语里有美元的意思哦。而小兔子呢,则能叫做kit,又有成套球衣之解。还有一个更常用更熟悉的儿化口语bunny兔宝宝,bun就是小圆包,兔子尾巴不是个小圆包么?

3、dust bunny,灰尘兔子,就是长时间没有大扫除的话,你们家家具底下,很多灰尘聚集起来成一小团的毛球,那个就叫dust bunny,长得确实像灰兔子。记得《老友记》里有提到过。又能叫做dust kitten,灰尘猫咪或者turkey's nest,火鸡窝

Goose 鹅

形容非常胆小

适用于一个人也适用于其他人

Duck 鸭

(尤指批评)不起作用,对牛弹琴。例:Their hints about his behavior were like water off a duck’s back.他们示意他举止不当,如同对牛弹琴。3.a dead duck

Wolf 狼

1.Don’t trust a goat with the kitchen-garden, or a wolf with sheepfold.不能请羊管菜园,不能请狼管羊圈。

2.Who keeps company with wolves, will learn to howl.和狼在一起,就会学狼叫。3.Man is a wolf to man.人对人是狼。(人心狠,人吃人)
