Pride and Prejudice, Human’s Weaknesses
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”(From Pride and Prejudice, 1813)
The writer of this novel, Jane Austen, is one of the most famous British novelists, was born in Steventon, Hampshire, who had written many wonderful novels that are fondly cherished by us readers, such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and so on.Jane Austen's novels were witty, warm and ironic portraits of the privileged classes of 18th-and 19th-century England. It is universally acknowledged that the eternal theme of Jane Austen’s novels is the choice people make for marriage partners, so is in Pride and Prejudice. The chief business of Mrs.Bennet’s life was to find suitable husbands for her five daughters.Once she heard that Netherfield Park had been let out to a London gentleman named Mr.Bingley.She was so eager to get acquainted with Mr.Bingley and marry one of her daughter with the wealthy young man.Through Mr.Bennet’s effort, the Bennet attended the ball held in Mr.Bingley’s house.Mr.Bingley and Jane, the oldest Bennet daughter, a pretty girl of sweet and gentle disposition, were attracted to each other at once. His friend, Darcy, however, created a bad impression, seeming cold and extremely proud. In particular, he insulted Elizabeth Bennet, a girl of spirit and intelligence and her father’s favorite. He refused to dance with her when she was sitting down for lack of a partner. To his own surprise, Mr.Darcy couldn’t help falling love with Elizabeth and tried to please that smart girl. However, because of the bad impression he had left on her, Elizabeth refused and sneered at Darcy many times.Elizabeth turned disgusted with Mr.Darcy.She met the new officer, Mr.Wickham, and convinced Darcy’s insult to him.Darcy, however, found himself deeply in love with Elizabeth, despite her family, which he even advised Bingley not to marry Jane.Mr.Collins arrived at Longhorn, tried to marry one of the Bennets’ girl as amender. As he was refused by Elizabeth, he married Charlotte Lucas.During Elizabeth’s visit to the Collins in Kent, she met Lady Catherine as well as her nephew, Darcy, frequently. To her astonishment, Darcy proposed to her.Because of his participation in driving Bingley away from her sister, his wicked way of treating Wickham, and her own hatred of his pride, his sense of superiority and his selfish disdain, she refused him angrily and determinately. However, after reading the letter from Darcy in which explained his idea of Bingley and Jane and the detailed relationship between him and Wickham, she knew she had misjudged both Darcy and Wickham. Her trip to Pemberley certainly proved her heart to Darcy as Darcy had changed his behavior as well. When she learned that it was Darcy who played a major role in marrying her eloped little sister, Lydia, to Wickham, there was no doubt that she loved him. They two finally went together.Among those characters in this novel, I hate Mrs.Bennet for she was such a snobbish and foolish woman. Her poor nurse urged her to do something disgusting and foolish. Those seemed to help her loved daughters but in fact, all out of her own vanity.I like Elizabeth most. She was the second daughter in the Bennet family, and the most intelligent and quick-witted, Elizabeth is the protagonist of Pride and Prejudice and one of the most well-known female characters in English literature. Her admirable qualities are numerous—she is lovely, clever, and, in a novel defined by dialogue, she converses as brilliantly as anyone. Her honesty, virtue, and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behavior that pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society.Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray;Pride and Prejudice is essentially the story of how she(and her true love, Darcy)overcome all obstacles—including their own personal failings—to find romantic happiness.Elizabeth must not only cope with a hopeless mother, a distant father, two badly behaved younger siblings, and several snobbish, antagonizing females, she must also overcome her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially led her to reject his proposals of marriage. Her charms were sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, while she navigates familial and social turmoil. As she gradually came to recognize the nobility of Darcy’s character, she realized the error of her initial prejudice against him.She knew her own mind and dare to say no.While sometimes she behaved in an extreme way because of her over self-esteem.Owing to her sensitive mother, she had to protect herself from insulting.Actually, besides Elizabeth, I took a lot interest in Mr.Darcy since the very beginning though he appeared as a proud, self-important man.Instead, such good-looking gentleman like Mr.Bingley did not attract me very much.In some cases, a man with perfect character would always have a velvet paw.Wickham is a typical example that so many people had been deceived by his appearance. As I like both the two roles, I am happy to see them finally get married.Darcy’s proud is evident. His talks, his expressions, every movement of him seemed to show his pride. But as I turning over the novel, I found a rather proud heart in Elizabeth as well. For a country girl, there would not be a lot to be proud of.However, living in a family of silly sisters and a gossipy mother whose mind was always full of marriage, the smart girl could not express herself. Each word she said seemed to protect herself from others, especially to those who were also proud such as Darcy. It was not always good for her;however, for a person like Darcy who had accepted so many compliments, it was really an attraction. If Elizabeth had not been too proud to show her disdain, she would never have had his eyes on her.And if Darcy had not been as generous and kind as he was written to be virtually, he would have hated Elizabeth instead of being attracted so deeply. However, it was her pride which blinded her from learning the truth. She misunderstood Darcy and seemed to dislike all the things which were involved with him. That might simply be the meaning of the word “Prejudice”.Elizabeth was intelligent, analyzing the character of Mr.Wickham and Darcy;she soon sensibly realized her mistake and made every attempt she could to save it.She never lost her confidence and courage to fight for her own happiness in spite of her low-birth.Darcy also gave up the chances to marry a noble girl such as Miss.Bingley and his cousin. In this way, even if their characters are so different, their marriage was based on the same mind.Of all the chapters of the novel, I am most interested in Elizabeth’s trip to Pemberley with her uncle and aunt, Mr.and Mrs.Gardiner.This part itself is developed in a scene of the beauty of Pemberley. The main role, Elizabeth and the Gardiners are all intelligent people.Without the gossip of Mrs.Bennet and the noise of the 3 little sisters, the story goes on with great peace.Their meet with Darcy was both unexpected and expectable. It was unexpected because neither Elizabeth nor Darcy thought of meeting each other in such an agreeable situation. It was expectable because it was such an agreeable situation for them to meet each other again. It was their first meet after Darcy’s proposal.Darcy behaved unbelievably polite and their conversations with Georgiana, Darcy’s sister, went on naturally. It gave a sign that Elizabeth might have changed her hart and indeed, she did.Although the elopement of Lydia and Wickham seemed to disturb them, Darcy at last conquered his pride that he spent considerable time, effort and money on the 2 people he disdained.Another disturbance was Lady Catherine’s visit, but all of these seemed just to quicken their steps to marriage.Jane Austen must have been an idealist which most of the women writers could not avoid being.Charming roles are always charming, disgusting roles are always disgusting. All the pride and prejudice are conquered.Everyone got they deserved to get.She showed us the human’s weakness, pride and prejudice through the novel. It is fragile of human nature which can be easily distorted simply by dissimilation, carelessness or even blindness.Upper-class status and advantages produce the Pride, while poverty and self-esteem against rich produce Prejudice.

Reading after Pride and Prejudice
Recently I have been reading a novel called Pride and Prejudice, which was written by Jane Austen.Although I haven’t finished it yet, I still have something to write. The writer, Jane Austen, was an English woman. She was born in Steventon, Hampshine, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and the seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire.Austin didn’t go to regular schools, but she read many literary works at her parents’guidance. She started writing about the age of 20, and published six novels.Pride and Prejudice(1813)and Emma(1816)are the best-known books of them.Virginia Woolf called her “the most perfect artist among women”.Most of her novels were all adapted into movies and successful in the world. For living in a small country town, contacting the medium and small landlords, pastor as well as their quiet and comfortable living environment, there were no significant social contradictions in her works. She described a truthful picture of her world, especially the marriage and love between gentlemen and ladies by her meticulous feminine observation. The style of her works is humorous and rich in comic conflicts, so many readers love them. This type of novels not only at that time attracted broad readers, today;it still gives the readers unique art enjoyment. The novel describes love process of heroine Elizabeth and hero Darcy, her elder sister Jane and Mr.Bingley, younger sister Jane and Mr.Bingley, younger sister Lydia and Mr.Wickham, her good friend Charlotte and Mr.Collins.The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth revealed the characteristics which constituted a successful marriage. One of these characteristics was that the feeling couldn’t be brought on by appearances and must gradually develop between the two people as they got to know one another. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingley was also an example of successful marriage. They had the excellent understanding, super-excellent disposition of Jane and a general similarity of feeling and taste between her and her husband.Unlike Darcy and Elizabeth, there was a flaw in their relationship. The flaw was that both characters were too gullible and too good-hearted to ever act strongly against external forces that may attempt to separate them.Obviously, Lydia and Wickham’s marriage was an example of a bad marriage.Their marriage was based on appearances, good looks and youthful vivacity.Once these qualities could no longer be seen by each other, the once strong relationship would slowly fade away.Through their relationship, Jane Austen showed that hasty marriage based on superficial qualities quickly cooled and led to unhappiness. The marriage between Mr.Collins and Charlette was based on economics rather than on love or appearance. It was a common practice during Austen’s time for woman to marry a husband to save herself from spinsterhood or to gain financial security. However, Jane Austen viewed this as a type of prostitution and disapproved it.Elizabeth was a clever, beautiful and strong-minded woman, who looked down upon the hypocrisy in high-society circles.Facing the marriage, she was courage, visionary and good at thinking.Although, she had some wrong opinions on Darcy in the beginning, finally she knew about Darcy justly through thinking, hence gained the true love.Darcy was a handsome, rich gentleman, but proud and didn’t want to make contact with others, leading to dissatisfactions from neighbors.Even worse, Darcy left bad impressions on the people around him and Elizabeth also hated him.She had prejudice against Darcy gradually. When Darcy proposed to her, she refused him decisively. After that, Darcy began to reflect on the self-examination and treated people with more populist. As time went by, they came across again.Darcy was not only polite, but was popular among the neighbors. Finally, regardless of his aunt’s strong objection and concept of family, Darcy proposed to Elizabeth again.Elizabeth willingly consented. She began to appear her lively side to Darcy. The characters have their own personalities.Mrs.Bennet was a woman who was eager to marry off her daughters.Mr.Bingley was a friendly young man.Jane was simple, innocent and never spoke evil of others.Elizabeth was a clever girl who always had her own opinions.Mary liked reading classic books.Kitty didn’t have her own opinions but liked to follow her sister.Lydia was a girl who followed exotic things, handsome man and was somehow a little profligate. As far as I am concerned, love is the most beautiful and valuable thing and the basis of marriage.Although material is important, we shouldn’t give up seeking for the true love.By contrasting Elizabeth with Lydia, we know the true love is essential. Then, I think the behavior is the symbol of people. If Darcy was polite and warm-hearted in the beginning, maybe he would not have been misunderstood by Elizabeth. Therefore, never be arrogant. It is true that the first impression is important, but we should also recognize someone in long time and from all aspects. That requires we are strong-minded, reasoned and sensible.Be tolerant to anyone, and you will be more likely gain happiness.Last but not least, this novel has an effect on today’s Chinese society, which is full of bullionism and hedonism. Many youngers have the question, especially girls, “Rose and bread, which is more important”.Once in a famous dating show called If you are the one, a girl said “Would rather sit in the BMW car crying, don’t sit on the bike laughing”, which means she would live together with a rich man rather than a poor man. Most girls think that houses, cars and property are more important than appearances and characters.I don’t agree with it.As new century’s girls, who are expected to be independent, self-reliance, self-love, we could earn money through our own effects instead of putting the hope on others.Only in this way can we have the security sense and be more attractive to lovers. The lover is one of the most intimate persons and the family is a part of our lives, therefore, let’s seek for the true love and create a promising future.

About the story: Jane Austen is this novel’s writer who is a famous writer in the world, and she is famoused with her a series of novel.s.Mrs.Bennet had five daughters, and marrying all her daughters was her biggest wish.In a genteel ball, Mr.Bingley , a friendly young man, also the host, fell in love with Jane at first sight.Jane was Mrs.Bennet 's first daughter who was simple, pure and never speaks evil of others.Darcy ,who was Bingley 's good friend ,a very proud man who seemed to always feel superior, was fond of Jane’s sister,Elizabeth. But his arrogance behavior and the smear from Wickham led Elizabeth to misunderstand and was biassed against Darcy.Darcy couldn't restrain himself from loving Elizabeth ,so he proposed to her.But his attitude was still so arrogant ,Elizabeth declined firmly. This hit made Darcy noticed the consequence from proud and conceited for the first time.Leaving a long letter to explain the things around him and Elizabeth, he left her painfully. She felt regret after reading it.Not only feel guilty for misunderstanding of Darcy , but also ashamed for the behavior of her mother.Elizabeth gradually changed her views of Darcy. When Darcy met her in his own manor again, his sincere attitude and dignified behavior made her considerably surprised. Finally ,they walked out of the frog which was pride and prejudice. It could be called a happy ending. There are seven different marriages presented in the novel.Excluding the Gardiner and the Lucas, the remaining five marriages contrasts each other to reveal Jane’s opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which constitutes a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that the feeling cannot be brought on by appearances, and must gradually develop between the two people as they get to know one another. In the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy were distant from each other because of their prejudice. The series of events which they both experienced gave them the opportunity to understand one another and the time to reconcile their feelings for each other. Thus, their mutual understanding is the foundation of their relationship and will lead them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one’s partner before marrying. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingley is also an example of successful marriage.Jane Austen, through Elizabeth, expresses her opinion of this in the novel. The last example of a marriage is a of a different nature than the ones mentioned above. The marriage between Mr.Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather than on love or appearance. It was a common practice during Austen’s time for
women to marry a husband to save herself from spinsterhood or to gain financial security. However, Jane Austen viewed this as a type of prostitution and disapproved of it.In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen dramatizes this form of women inequality and show that women who submits themselves to this type of marriage will have to suffer in tormenting silence as Charlotte does.In Pride and Prejudice, Jane has denounced the elements of marriage and society that she found distasteful. These are the conclusions of her observation of the people in her world. However in her writing, Jane has also reflected her own enjoyment in life among these people with and without their faults.About my opinions: Believe it or not,I have readed this story no less times no matter book movie.I readed it again and again, and the more time I read the story is more than a love story I found.I like this story for the outsdanding characteristic of the characters.A good book not only can bring you exciting, but also give you some further thingking. From the Pride and Prejudice,I lean a lot.First,it’s stupid to judge a person by the first impression and always have prejudice on the person who you don’t like.In a word,we can’t judge a person without any further reconigse or by other people’s words.Just like Elizabeth, under Wickham’s evil speaking she judge Darcy wad a pround and hatest man and began to have prejudice on him,and kept misunderstanding him.As a reselt, she was failed to see the merists of darcy.Other example,Mr.Binely persuadeed himself run away from falling in love with june for having heard Darcy’s word that June didn’t like him,at least no more deeper than him. This hurted two loved heart. They even almost missed each other.By the way,we can learn that pride sometimes will make you far away from others. You can’t deny that the country people didn’t like Darcy very much no matter how rich he.For,he always feels superior to the country people. And,because Darcy’s pround,he offended the girl he love. Then, After reading this book, I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs.Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. Why is she so crazy about that?I know it’s because of money.money is very important for our lives.Money is required for food, shelter, and clothing, so many things in our life need money. With money, you can make your life more comfortable. You will be able to buy a big house with servants. But, Can money determine everything? How could a marriage maintain without love bue just for money? From the marriage between Charlotte Lucas and Mr.Collins, we found that their marriage totally depended on the position, money, and the background, not the love. Most women choose the men who can satisfy their material comforts to be their husbands at that time, just like Charlotte Lucas. She married Mr.Collins although she shared no common interests with him.She didn’t love him while she married him indeed. She persuaded herself to tolerate her husband’s strange and foolish behavior, and her only comfort
was her big new house and rich material life. While in my eye, it’s really unfortunate to rest hope on the material comforts for her rest life.Although sometimes it’s necessary to consider the property, position, and background in the marriage, it’s stupit to marry just for the money.Charlotte Lucas married for the possession not love, and on the other hand, Mr.Collins married her because he needed a wife, not for love, either.Their marriage seemed to be necessary but not happy. But how to maintain the marriage without love? Fortunately,I don’t know more them in the end of the book.
