Mausoleum has not yet been excavated.What looks like inside could only be known when it is opened.However, the three pits of the terra-cotta warrior excavated outside the east gate of the outer enclosure of the necropolis can make one imagine how magnificent and luxurious the structure of Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum was.No.1 Pit was stumbled upon in March 1974 when villagers of Xiyang Village of Yanzhai township, Lintong County, sank a well 1.5km east of the mausoleum.In 1976, No.2 and 3 Pits were found 20m north of No.1 Pit respectively after the drilling survey.The terra-cotta warriors and horses are arrayed according to the Qin dynasty battle formation, symbolizing the troops keeping vigil beside the mausoleum.This discovery aroused much interest both at home and abroad.In 1975, a museum, housing the site of No.1 and covering an area of 16,300 square meters was built with the permission of the State Council.The museum was formally opened to public on Oct.1, the National Day, 1979.No.1 Pit is 230 meters long from east to west, 62m wide from north to south and 5m deep, covering a total area of 14,260 square meters.It is an earth-and-wood structure in the shape of a tunnel.There are five sloping entrances on the eastern and western sides of the pit respectively.The pit is divided into eleven corridors by ten earthen partition walls, and the floors are paved with bricks.Thick rafters were placed onto the walls(but now one can only see their remains), which were covered with mats and then fine soil and earth.The battle formation of the Qin dynasty, facing east.In the east end are arrayed three lines of terra-cotta warriors, 70 pieces in each, totaling 210 pieces.They are supposed to be the van of the formation.Immediately behind them are 38 columns of infantrymen alternating with war chariots in the corridors, each being 180m long.They are probably the main body of the formation.There is one line of warriors in the left, right and west ends respectively, facing outwards.They are probably the flanks and the rear.There are altogether 27 trial trench, it is assumed that more than 6,000 clay warriors and horses could be unearthed from No.1 Pit.No.2 Pit sis about half the size of No.1 Pit, covering about 6,000 square meters Trail diggings show this is a composite formation of infantry, cavalry and chariot soldiers, from which roughly over 1,000 clay warriors, and 500 chariots and saddled horses could be unearthed.The 2,000-year-old wooden chariots are already rotten.But their shafts, cross yokes, and wheels, etc.left clear impressions on the earth bed.The copper parts of the chariots still remain.Each chariot is pulled by four horses which are one and half meters high and two metres long.According to textual research, these clay horses were sculptures after the breed in the area of Hexi Corridor.The horses for the cavalrymen were already saddled, but with no stirrups.No.3 Pit covers an area of 520m2 with only four horses, one chariot and 68 warriors, supposed to be the command post of the battle formation.Now, No.2 and 3 Pits have been refilled, but visitors can see some clay figures and weapons displayed in the exhibition halls in the museum that had been unearthed from these two pits.The floors of both No.1 and 2 Pits were covered with a layer of silt of 15 to 20cm thick.In these pits, one can see traces of burnt beams everywhere, some relics which were mostly broken.Analysis shows that the pits were burned down by Xiang Yu, leader of a peasant army.All of the clay warriors in the three pits held real weapons in their hands and face east, showing Emperor Qin Shihuang's strong determination of wiping out the six states and unifying the whole country.The height of the terra-cotta warriors varies from 1.78m, the shortest, to 1.97m, the tallest.They look healthy and strong and have different facial expressions.Probably they were sculpted by craftsmen according to real soldiers of the Qin dynasty.They organically combined the skills of round engraving, bas-relief and linear engraving, and utilized the six traditional folk crafts of sculpturing, such as hand-moulding, sticking, cutting, painting and so on.The clay models were then put in kilns, baked and colour-painted.As the terra-cotta figures have been burnt and have gone through the natural process of decay, we can't see their original gorgeous colours.However, most of the terra-cotta figures bear the trace of the original colours, and few of them are still as bright as new.They are found to be painted by mineral dyestuffs of vermilion, bright red, pink dark green, powder green, purple, blue, orange, black and white colours.Thousands of real weapons were unearthed from these terra-cotta army pits, including broad knives, swords, spears, dagger-axes, halberds, bows, crossbows and arrowheads.These weapons were exquisitely made.Some of themes are still very sharp;analyses show that they are made of alloys of copper and tin, containing more than ten kinds of other metals.Since their surfaces were treated with chromium, they are as bright as new, though buried underground for more than 2,000 years.This indicates that Qin dynasty's metallurgical technology and weapon-manufacturing technique already reached quite a high level.In December 1980, two teams of large painted bronze chariots and horses were unearthed 20 metres west of the mound of Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum.These single shaft four-horse chariots each comprises 3,462 spare parts, and has a body with two compartments, one behind the other, and an elliptical umbrella like canopy.The four horses harnessed to the chariot are 65-67 centimeters tall.The restored bronze chariots and horses are exact imitations of true chariot, horse and driver in half life-size.The chariots and horses are decorated with coloured drawings against white background.They have been fitted with more than 1,500 pieces of gold and silvers and decorations, looking luxurious, splendid and graceful.Probably they were meant for the use of Emperor Qin Shihuang's soul to go on inspection.The bronze chariots and horses were made by lost wax casting, which shows a high level of technology.For instance, the tortoise-shell-like canopy is about 4mm thick, and the window is only 1mm thick on which are many small holes for ventilation.According to a preliminary study, the technology of manufacturing the bronze chariots and horses has involved casting, welding, reveting, inlaying embedding and chiseling.The excavation of the bronze chariots and horses provides extremely valuable material and data for the textual research of the metallurgical technique, the mechanism of the chariot and technological modeling of the Qin Originally built in 652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty(618-907), it functioned to collect Buddhist materials that were taken from India by the hierarch Xuanzang.Xuanzang started off from Chang'an(the ancient Xian), along the Silk Road and through deserts, finally arriving in India, the cradle of Buddhism.Enduring 17 years and traversing 100 countries, he obtained Buddha figures, 657 kinds of sutras, and several Buddha relics.Having gotten the permission of Emperor Gaozong(628-683), Xuanzang, as the first abbot of Da Ci'en Temple, supervised the building of a pagoda inside it.With the support of royalty, he asked 50 hierarchs into the temple to translate Sanskrit in sutras into Chinese, totaling 1,335 volumes, which heralded a new era in the history of translation.Based on the journey to India, he also wrote a book entitled 'Pilgrimage to the West' in the Tang Dynasty, to which scholars attached great importance.First built to a height of 60 meters(197 feet)with five stories, it is now 64.5 meters(211.6 feet)high with an additional two stories.It was said that after that addition came the saying-'Saving a life exceeds building a seven-storied pagoda'.Externally it looks like a square cone, simple but grand and it is a masterpiece of Buddhist construction.Built of brick, its structure is very firm.Inside the pagoda, stairs twist up so that visitors can climb and overlook the panorama of Xian City from the arch-shaped doors on four sides of each storey.On the walls are engraved fine statues of Buddha by the renowned artist Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty.Steles by noted calligraphers also grace the pagoda.As for the reason why it is called Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there is a legend.According to ancient stories of Buddhists, there were two branches, for one of which eating meat was not a taboo.One day, they couldn't find meat to buy.Upon seeing a group of big wild geese flying by, a monk said to himself: 'Today we have no meat.I hope the merciful Bodhisattva will give us some.' At that very moment, the leading wild goose broke its wings and fell to the ground.All the monks were startled and believed that Bodhisattva showed his spirit to order them to be more pious.They established a pagoda where the wild goose fell and stopped eating meat.Hence it got the name 'Big Wild Goose Pagoda'.Da Ci'en Temple
Da Ci'en Temple is the home of Big Wild Goose Pagoda.In 648, to commemorate the dead virtuous queen, royalty ordered the building of a temple named 'Ci'en'(Mercy and Kindness), for which the status and scale far exceeded all others.Today, with an area of 32,314 square meters(38,648.5 square yards), one seventh of the original area, it still retains its grandeur.Before the temple, there stands a statue of hierarch Xuanzang, the meritorious hierarch.Walking on and across a small bridge, visitors will see the gates of the temple.With guarding lions, the temple seems stately for lions were said to function as talismans.Entering the temple you will see two buildings-Bell Tower in the east and Drum Tower in the west.Inside the Bell Tower hangs an iron bell 15 tons(14.76 gross tons)in weight.It was molded in 1548 in the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644).Along the central axis are arranged the Hall of Mahavira, Sermon Hall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang.In the Hall of Mahavira are three carved statues of Sakyamuni, and 18 arhats as well as Xuanzang.The Sermon Hall is where Buddhist disciples would listen to a sermon.A bronze statue of Amitabha is dedicated and a Buddha statue is collected by Xuanzang as oblation.The Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang is north of Big Wild Goose Pagoda.In this hall are Xuanzang's relic and a bronze statue of a seated Xuanzang.The inner wall is chiseled with murals depicting this hierarch's story.Renowned as the contemporary Dunhuang Buddhist storehouse praised by UNESCO, it is the biggest memorial of Xuanzang.North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Jimei School Village is a general name for all schools and cultural institutions here.It was built by Mr.Tan Kah-kee in 1913.After decades of development, the village now covers a floor space area of over 100,000 square kilometers and there are more than 10,000 students in it.The higher learning institutions are Xiamen Aquatic Products College, Jimei Navigation College, and Jimei Finance and Economy Institute and Business Administration College, etc.There are also secondary specialized schools, middle schools, primary schools, kindergartens and nurseries schools in the village.In addition to the schools metioned above, one may find here auditoriums, swimming pools, stadiums, cinemas, hospitals and navigation clubs.They are rare through out the country for their large scales and good facilitation.Jimei School Village, blending the Chinese architectural style with western one, has become a symbol of Jimei.Among the buildings of unique style are Daonan Lou in Jimen Middle School, Nanxun Lou in Overseas Chinese School and the Teaching Building of Navigation College.In front of the Daonan Lou is the Drangon Boat Pond, 800 meters long and 300 meters wide.Around it are seven pavilions of different styles, with curved eaves and carved pillars.They are called “Seven Stars Falling onto the Ground”.In the middle of the pond stand two pavilions designed by Mr.Tan Kah-kee, which are named “Lonely Star Accompanying the moon”.Every year, during the Dragon Boat Festival, the dragon boat racing is held in the pond with shining ripples and melodious Nanqu(south Fujian Opera)accompanied by drumbeats.Several international dragon boat racings have been held here and attracted groups of tourists at home and abroad.各位团友,早上好。今天我们去福建风景“十佳”之一的集美游览,集美是爱国华侨领袖陈嘉庚先生的故乡。
首先,让我向各位介绍集美区。
集美区,位于厦门岛的西北,面积227平方千米,人口12万,是著名的侨乡和旅游风景区。现在我们进入集美学村,集美,俗名“尽尾”,即大陆尽处;又名“浔尾”,即浔江之尾。明末集美进士陈文瑞嫌“浔尾”不雅,改称“集美”,寓集天下之美,但未通行。至陈嘉庚先生1894年创办惕斋学塾,1913年办集美小学,1917年办女子小学,1918年办师范和中学,1919年办幼稚园,1920年办水产科和商科,1921年办女师以后,于1921年2月将这些学校定名为“福建私立集美学校”总校名。因军阀混战,给学校带来严重滋扰,经陈嘉庚先生和校长向南北军政府呼吁保证学校的安全和宁静,要求规定为“永久和平学村”。得到南北双方承诺。1923年10月由孙中山大元帅大本营批准“承认集美学校为中国永久和平学村”,并电令闽粤省长及统兵长官“特别保护”,“集美学村”才由此得名。陈嘉庚倾资兴学举世无双,他为保证学校费用,把国外所有不动产7000亩橡胶园和店屋货栈以及50万平方英尺的地皮,均出售作为集美学校的基金,他在厦门大学发起人会议上慷慨陈词:“民心不死,国脉尚存,四万万人民决无甘居人下之理!今日不达,尚有来日;及身不达,尚有子孙。如精卫之填海、愚公之移山,终有贯彻之目的之一日。”1993年10月,农业部、交通部、福建省、厦门市共同筹办集美大学,以厦门水产学院、集美航海学院、福建体育学院、集美财政专科学校、集美师专为基础,同时成立工商管理学院。
各位团友,现在我们来到鳌园参观。鳌园是陈嘉庚先生年回乡定居后花10年时间亲自督建而成的,耗资65万元,占地近9000平方米。鳌园原为海边的一个小岛,形如蛰伏的大鳌,护卫着集美。1951年,陈嘉庚“不侵民田,辟置公园”,“于中立碑,纪念解放,名曰鳌园”。国中建筑和雕刻均体现陈先生寓教于游、寓教于乐的思想,包容中外古今、天文地理、动物植物、工农业生产、科技文化等,无所不有,博大精深,是个博物大观。也是新评的厦门二十名景之一,取名“鳌园春晖”。鳌园分为三部分,即门廊、解放纪念碑、陵墓。走进园门,就是50米的长廊,长廊两侧厢壁上镶嵌着58幅历史故事人物内容的青石镂雕,这是鳌园653幅石雕的精华部分。左边主要是24幅诸葛亮马前课,据陈嘉庚先生的解释,这是诸葛亮早就对清代政府、民国成立、抗日战争以及毛泽东领导人民革命取得胜利的预卜,他相信这不是迷信而是先知,表达了他对共产党、毛泽东的信赖和热爱。这些围墙上的浮雕共有291幅,初建时是用水泥塑制的,几十年风雨侵蚀,损坏严重,1991年春,集美学校委员会筹款百余万元,以原水泥雕内容为参考,由集美学校和厦门大学艺术系的教师绘图,惠安艺人精心雕琢,全部更换为青石雕,其中有浮雕229块、沉雕42块、影雕20块。影雕是石雕艺术的新发明,使世界叹服。法国等国家专门请惠安影雕师前去表演,倾倒了欧洲许多艺术家。
集美解放纪念碑是鳌园的主体建筑,是陈嘉庚先生亲自精心设计的。纪念碑高28米,象征中国共产党经过28年的奋斗,终于取得胜利;正面是毛主席亲笔题写的“集美解放纪念碑”,毛主席为一个镇题写解放纪念碑是仅有的一次;碑的背面是陈嘉庚先生撰写并手书的碑文。纪念碑台基的底层为13级,象征陈嘉庚事业顺利发展的鼎盛年月;第二层为10级,寓他的事业遇到困难,企业收盘的年月;再上面是8级和3级,象征8年抗战、3年解放战争。碑座还刻满了反映新中国建立的石雕。
纪念碑前有一高7米,宽30米的屏壁,正中刻着“博物观”三字,左右各12块浮雕,内容大多为公共卫生、体育运动;中间是地图,特别突出了台湾省地图,反映了闽台密切关系和陈先生盼望祖国统一的愿望,其下为托儿所到大学的类型和行为规范图。
转过屏壁就是陈嘉庚先生的陵墓了。墓坐子向午,呈寿龟形,墓盖为13块六角形青斗石镶成,墓碑上刻有陈先生生卒年月和担任过的全国政协副主席、全国侨联主席等职务。墓圹为“凤”字壳,周边用15块青斗石浮雕介绍陈先生前半生的主要经历。墓圹四周的石雕,记录着他倾资兴学,赤诚报国的光辉一生,可以说是陈嘉庚先生的生平事迹展览。陈嘉庚先生于1961年8月12日病逝北京,享年88岁。他身后备极哀荣,北京举行了公祭,并由周恩来总理、朱德委员长领头执绋,覆盖国旗的灵柩,沿途各省市迎送,在集美举行了国葬,最后安葬在鳌园。1988年,国务院将陈嘉庚陵墓列为全国重点文物保护单位。墓前有一拜亭,每逢清明节、集美学校校庆日,厦门各界和集美学校师生均要到此祭奠,表示深切怀念。
参观鳌园,看了陈嘉庚先生的不平凡业绩,我们应该能够感到陈嘉庚先生人格的崇高,我们的心灵得到了净化,是上了一堂生动的爱国
