最开始的乐队里，黄家驹天分并不好，谈两个音符就错了，乐队里有个吉他好的人就鄙视他，让他走，他并没有放弃，没有翻脸，而忍辱负重，“纵有创伤不退避”，回家苦练吉他。长时间弹吉他第一手指会磨得厉害，得戴东西，二就是会真的肿了，他就一盆热水加盐练就了一手绝好的吉他。后来自己组建beyond乐队，为了在无人认可的情况下开演唱会，他做了各种兼职，包括发传单，推销，擦皮鞋，捡垃圾。卖票和租场地，挂横幅，都得自己干。同时个人也做出了牺牲，《喜欢》因为害怕玩band连累女友而分手。
演唱会赔钱，赚人气，有唱片公司看上了该乐队，你们创作我出钱。因为歌曲《大地》一夜成名。划时代意义的经典歌曲，开创了流行歌曲的非情歌时代。成名之后，仍然坚持创作之路，而没有变得低俗，仍然心态平和。??《真的爱你》报答当年母亲的钱?? 不同于很多歌手，成名之后只关注自己，他是个很有爱心的人，成立了第三世界基金会，并去非洲访问贫民，《光辉岁月》，是家驹为南非第一位黑人总统曼德拉致敬所写的，反对种族歧视，希望世界和平，一直是beyond的心愿。beyond也开始一点一滴，朝着国际化迈进。《amani》，反战歌曲，号召关注在战乱和苦难中的孤儿和难民。为电影《莫欺少年穷》写了《不再犹豫》。1992年，为了beyond有更广阔的发展，为了打造国际化乐队的理想，他们四人来到
