词汇是语言的三要素之一，是语言的基本材料，著名语言学家里弗也认为，掌握足够的词汇是成功运用外语的关键。后就很难改变。其实，在英语国家中此方法通常只用于拼字校对，如教师了解学生是否会正确拼写单词，旅馆人员询问顾客姓名等。

一旦学生养成这种拼字记忆的习惯，以词汇成了学生的最大的“拦路虎”，严重影响了学生学习英语的兴趣。笔者认为应该“对症下药”，采取相应的记忆策略。

离开词汇就无法表达思想。没有足够的词汇就不能有效地进行听、说、读、写，就无法有效地用英语进行交际。，加之缺少一定的语言环境，记住一个单词需要花很多的时间和精力，有时好不容易记住了一个单词，可过几天又忘了。

然而随着学习内容的深入和词汇量的不断增加，不少学生感到单词难记，遗忘率很高。加之小学生不会音标许多学生对大量词汇感到力不从心而束手无策。

这是效率极其低下的方法。可是许多教师仍乐此不疲。在调查中本人发现很多学生在用拼字法记忆单词，如question, q-u-e-s-t-i-o-n。a-n-s-w-e-r;answer;e-a-r-l-y, early.这样的单词朗读法不绝于耳。
