第四篇:会话合作原则与英语演讲比赛的回答提问环节分析
【摘要】本文以格莱斯的会话合作理论为指导,以实证研究的方法分析了一次演讲比赛中回答评委提问环节得分最高和最低的两位选手的语料,在此基础上提出要想提高学生的口语技能和实际运用语言进行交际的能力,有必要传授一定的语用知识。【关键词】会话合作原则

研究背景
格莱斯(Grice)的会话含意理论是理解自然语言的一种学说,这个理论提出语言交际的双方都有相互合作、求得交际成功的愿望,因此,谈话的参与者必须遵守一些诸如真实、充分、关联、清楚等原则和准则。这就是“合作原则”(Cooperative Principle)。如果说话的一方在表面违背了合作原则,那么他很有可能是故意为之。听话者就得根据当时语境对原话加以推断,找到说话者故意违反合作原则的目的也就等于真正明白了对方话中隐含的意义。格莱斯把这种在言语交际过程中推导得到的隐含意义称为“会话含意”(conversational implica-ture)(何自然,1997:49)。
格莱斯在提到合作原则及其四条准则的相关表述时全部使用了祈使句,所以有人认为这些准则是规范性的,它们是在告诉实施会话交际的双方该如何进行会话交际才能获得成功。这种观点常会被认为是对会话理论的误读。胡壮麟就曾指出:有关合作原则及其四条准则的表述用的都是祈使句,这使很多读者误认为它们是规范性的:告诉说话人应该怎样做。而事实上CP意图描写会话中实际发生的事(胡壮麟,2002:198)。但是,国内有少数研究者还是从CP的规范性角度进行了一定的探究,如梁润生,白海瑜(2006)。相比之下,此方面国内的实证研究同大量的有关会话含意的理论探讨研究相比则显得非常薄弱,所以作者希望从新的角度用实证研究的方法来研究该原则,在实际生活中尝试利用它来分析一些会话的语料。这些会话处于特殊的语境之中,但有些会话因为遵守合作原则比较成功地达到交际的目的,同时有些会话却因为无意识地违背了合作原则而导致交际的失败。笔者所指的会话交际即英语演讲比赛中非常重要的一个互动环节,即选手回答评委提问的环节。时下国内的一项重大赛事就是中央电视台和外语教学与研究出版社联合主办的CCTV杯全国英语演讲大赛。笔者辅导南京林业大学选手参加了江苏省赛区总决赛的过程中触发了利用合作原则分析选手回答提问的特殊语境下的会话语料的念头。合作原则的四大准则
格莱斯提出的CP有四大准则(Maxims): 1)数量的准则(Quantity maxim);
a)使所说的话正好满足当前交谈所需要的信息;b)使所说的话不要多于需要的信息。2)质量的准则(Qualitymaxim); a)不要说自知是虚假的话;b)不要说缺乏足够证据的话。3)关系的准则(Relation maxim); 4)方式准则(Manner maxim); a)避免晦涩;b)避免歧义;c)要简练;d)要有序。
该原则的前三条规定了人们为了实现成功交际应该“说什么”,第四条则有关“怎么说”。如果交谈双方都遵守该原则就能使交流顺利进行;如有违反原则的现象,则应视情况而论:是说者故意违反另有含意?或是说话人缺乏语用知识,无意识犯的错误? 研究设计和实施过程
本次研究采用先全程录像再结合转写进行分析的方法。笔者录下了校内一场选拔赛的决赛过程。参赛选手共十名,四男六女。最终转写的是回答评委提问得分最高和最低的两位选手的回答提问环节的对话部分。评委们给选手此环节评分的标准参照CCTV杯全国英语演讲大赛正式比赛的标准:简练,精确,相关,生动,可信,逻辑性强,不能避重就轻,不能背诵已经准备好的答案(李朋义,2003:5)。我们可看出该标准基本体现了会话合作原则的四个准则(见图)。按照收到的分数统计单确认研究对象为得分最高的Tom和最低的Mary,根据录像将他们的回答提问环节进行了文字转写。
分析和归纳
比赛的定题演讲题目是“The greatest I’ve got from my col-lege life”。Tom的演讲主要是围绕他在大学生活中学会独立生活展开的。
针对他的演讲,评委提问:Why do you think it isvery important to learn to be independent on campus? Tom的回答是:in my opinion,most Chinese students live with their parentsbefore theygotocollege.Their parents take good care of the chil-dren’s life.They hope the children need not bother to think abouttheir daily life necessities and put their heart and soul into theirstudy.But this will lead to the children’s inability to solve practi-cal problems on their own.Take me as an example,I never washedany clothes,and I did not knowhowto manage my money.At thebeginning ofmy college life,I often spent my money very casually.SoI was out ofmoney before the end of the month.However,aftera semester’s living on campus,nowI’m very proud of myself for Ican live independently here.I can wash my socks clean andsweet;I can find my things in their fixed places and money is nolonger a problem.So,to those who don’t know how to take goodcare of their lives I think independence really is very important.That’s all.Thank you.从该回答来看,评委的高分给得比较合理。我们试用CP来分析这段回答。
首先,评委的提问是寻求原因的。Tom的回答满足了当前的交际需求,解释了他所持观点的理由:大学生在上大学前大多和父母生活在一起,父母亲为了让自己的孩子投入学习,所以不让孩子操心家庭琐事,衣食住行全部由父母包办,结果导致学生们不知道如何解决生活中的实际问题。所以,在大学有机会学会独立生活,拥有能够独立生活的能力对这类学生当然非常重要。并且,Tom所说的话没有多于需要的信息,全部是解释原因的。从这点看来,他的回答遵守了数量准则。
其次,根据目前的社会现实,Tom所说的话比较可信,大学生的独立精神和自理能力的确非常重要,亟需锻炼。他本人是众多大学生的缩影,以自己为例比较有说服力,基本遵守了质量准则。
再者,Tom的话紧扣评委的提问,切中要点,充分解释了自己观点的原因,所以是高度相关的。最后,该选手的表达清晰,不会导致歧义的产生,而且简练有序:从问题产生的原因———父母包办生活———到以自己的亲身经历为例,较好地遵守了方式准则。从格赖斯的会话合作原则来看该回答是令人满意的,是在演讲比赛这样的特殊语境下的一次成功交际。Mary的定题演讲主要是围绕她在大学校园积极参与各项活动改善自我展开的。
评委给的问题是:What is the most im-portant thing that you have got from those activities since you justnamed a lot ofadvantages oftakingan active part in school activi-ties? Mary回答如下:Ok.I took an active part in activities andlearned a lot.I alsomade some newfriends.Well...Well...You knowJack?Jack is my newfriend.He is humorous and very kind to me.He comes fromSuzhou but he looks verystrongand healthy.We alllike himverymuch.And,and,and I’ve learned a lot fromhim.Heis good at English.We go to English corner together and we got toknoweach other there.I alsoimproved myspeakingEnglish and bebrave tocome here.I amveryglad tobe here and nomatter I win ornot I amsatisfying.And,and thank you verymuch.从Mary的回答来看:
首先它不能满足当前交际的需要,评委的问题没有被直接回答。在开头部分看似有个论点:我学到很多,交了很多朋友。但学了什么没点明;而朋友部分过多介绍Jack的情况。最后提到自己改善了口语,不论输赢都满意。这点离题太远,多于目前交流所需的信息,所以违背了数量和关系准则。
其次,她的话关于Jack的描述多为自己的个人看法,并没有相应的论据。如她说Jack很幽默,英语好等等,仅说说而已,并无证明,这又违背了质量准则。
再者,她的回答太多偏离主题内容,尤其是关于Jack的描述和她从参加校园活动中得到的收获直接关系不明显。而且,关于自己此次参赛的得奖与否的看法也偏离主题,关联性不大,严重违反了关系准则。
最后,在方式准则方面,她的回答倒是很容易听懂,没有歧义,可惜不够简练,逻辑性不强,从交的某个朋友谈到参赛心得,思维过于跳跃,违反了简练和有序的要求。该研究的启示
根据正在试行的《大学英语课程教学要求》,大学英语的教学目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力,特别是听说能力,使他们在今后的工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行口头和书面的信息交流(《大学英语课程教学要求》(试行),2004:1)。开展口语教学,鼓励参加诸如“CCTV杯”全国英语演讲大赛都是为了激发学习者的兴趣,提高他们的英语水平,特别是英语口语技能和实际应用方面的能力,以进一步满足我国日益扩大的国际交往需要。在日常的口语教学和对参加各类演讲比赛的选手进行辅导的过程中,我们不仅仅要关注学生的语音语调,学生的快速思维,学生的交流内容,我们还得培养学生的语用意识,让他们知道用何种方式与人交谈能最好地达到交流的目的,在谈话的质、量及谈话的关联性等方面该注意些什么。直接传授相关的语用知识是一种可行的方法,再辅以一些学生演讲比赛时研究者收集的语料分析估计教学效果会比较令人满意。同时,这次小小的实证研究也给国内方兴未艾的语料库研究一定的启示。二语习得研究已从对教学者的关注转向对学习者的关注,学习者的语言早已经是研究者特别注意的研究对象,对英语专业和非英语专业学生的口语、写作及翻译作业等等都有相应的语料库已经被建设或者正在筹建。笔者在尝试这次研究后认为我们不妨建设一个演讲比赛的语料库。当然,参加大型比赛的都是英语学习的佼佼者,如单一地建立他们的语料库不能代表多数学生的口语水平,笔者这次录像的是院、校级的选拔赛,选手水平的参差不平正好保证了语料的丰富性。当然,笔者对语料库的建设及研究没有非常深入的了解,只是希望本次研究能对未来的口语教学及对演讲比赛选手的培训有所启示。参考文献: [1]何自然.语用学与英语学习[M].上海:上海外语教育出版社,1997:49.[2]胡壮麟.语言学教程[M].北京:北京大学出版社,2002:197-198.[3]梁润生,白海瑜.合作原则和礼貌原则在口语教学中的运用[J].教育与职业,2006,23:146-147.[4]李朋义.CCTV杯全国英语演讲大赛2003年[M].北京:外语教学与研究出版社,2003.[5]教育部高等教育司.大学英语课程教学要求(试行)[M].上海:上海外语教育出版社,2004:1.
