Abstract:

Tess of the D’urbervilles is one of Thomas Hardy’ Wessex series , written in 1891.Word has it that it is a great tragedy about a poor girl.In my opinion everything happening has its own causes. The tragic love story narrates leading lady Tess asked her fake kin Alec who is fairly rich in the native areas for help. The dudish man Alec deprived Tess of her virginity.Personally speaking , that is the deep root of tragedy.Key words

Tess’ tragedy and the love attitudes in Tess of the d’Urbervilles

The reason I read it

As a English mayor , I prefer watching foreign films.Occasionally , I encountered a film named Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The gorgeous plot and characters impelled me to read the famous essay.Title

1.Brief Introduction of Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy was a famous British novelist and poet.He carried forward and developed the literary traditions of the Victorian Age.He described the tragic plots vividly and truthfully in his works. He was considered as “Shakespeare of British novels”.Hardy was born in an architect’s family and was expected to become an architect. He trained as an architect and worked in London and Dorset for ten years.Hardy began his writing career as a novelist in 1871 publishing Desperate Remedies. He was soon successful and left architecture for writing.Hardy was pessimistic about life. The main theme of his novels is the futility of man’s effort to struggle against cruel and unintelligible fate, chance, and

circumstances, which are all predestined by the immanent will.He bravely challenged many of the sexual and religious conventions of the Victorian Age.He exposed the

hypocritical morals, laws and people’s miserable life, especially the women’s life in social economic, politics, morals, custom, etc.after the invasion of industrial capital to the British villages. He described people of different social classes. He was good at viewing life with “a tragic light”.2.Plot

The story is about the tragic life of Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor family. She is sent to work as a maid for d’Urbervilles, because she has to support her poor family.Tess is seduced by Alec, the son of the family which she serves for, and then gives birth to a child. However, the child dies in infancy, which makes her very depressed. After that, she goes to work on a dairy farm, and then she is engaged to Angel Clare, the son of a clergyman. On their wedding night, they tell each other about their past hoping to be forgiven by each other. However, Clare leaves her after that because he can’t accept the truth. Then Tess becomes a labor again. She is insulted and ill-treated by her master. What’s worse, her father’s death and the bad condition of her family drive her to seek help from Alec who is a preacher now, and she can do nothing but to abbey him.Angel Clare comes back and wants to be reconciled to Tess, but the fact that Tess’ living with Alec hinders her from coming back to Clare. At last, Tess kills Alec in despair and she is soon arrested, tried and hanged.3.Character Analysis

Tess------the leading lady

Intelligent, strikingly attractive, and distinguished by her deep moral sensitivity and passionate intensity, Tess is indisputably the central character of the novel that bears her name. But she is also more than a distinctive individual.Hardy have ever said that her eyes are “neither black nor blue nor grey nor violet;rather all these shades together,” like “an almost standard woman.”

In my part, Tess represents the changing lady of the agricultural workers in England in the late nineteenth century. Also Tess is a symbol of unclear and unstable notions of class in nineteenth-century Britain, where old family lines retained their earlier

glamour, but where cold economic realities made sheer wealth more important than inner nobility.Beyond her social symbolism, Tess represents fallen humanity in a religious sense, as the frequent biblical allusions in the novel remind us.Just as Tess’s clan was once glorious and powerful but is now sadly diminished, so too did the early glory of the first humans, Adam and Eve, fade with their expulsion from Eden, making humans sad shadows of what they once were.Tess thus represents what is known in Christian theology as original sin, the degraded state in which all humans live, even when—like Tess herself after killing Prince or succumbing to Alec—they are not wholly or directly responsible for the sins for which they are punished. This torment represents the most universal side of Tess: she is the myth of the human who suffers for crimes that are not her own and lives a life more degraded than she deserves.Alec

Alec is a representative of the bourgeois society’s authority, the wealth and the evil.He has an aristocrat d’Urbervilles surname, a large amount of money and a great power which dominate the local people. He takes advantage of Tess’ poor family condition, and tempts her with money to go to his family as a servant. He always forces Tess to do something she is not willing to do.For example, when in the cart, Tess wants him to slow down, but he says that he will not do unless Tess let him “put one little kiss on those holmberry lips”(Hardy p57).That is a total insult to Tess. Then he seduces Tess, destroying her chastity which means all her life.At the end of the story, when Tess’ father dies, and her family is homeless, Alec “helps” her again. He tells Tess that her family can move to his cottage, and “the children can go to school”(Hardy p385).In fact, he just wants to possess Tess.He is full of violence and plots. He says that he is Tess’ “friend”, but he is unlikely to treat Tess as his real friend because they belong to different social class and they have totally different status and life experiences.Angel

Angel is a representative of the traditional moral concepts. At that time, the whole society is full of those ridiculous traditional moral concepts. At first, Angel considers Tess as the fresh and virginal daughter of nature”(Hard p131), but when he knows the history of Tess, he abandons her.He says “forgiveness does not apply to the case. You were one person;now you are another”(Hardy p247).It shows the traditional moral concepts are still deep-rooted in his mind.Angel is born in a pastor family, but he refuses to go to college and to be a pastor “serves for God”.On the contrary, he chooses to work on a farm and “serves for the humanity”.It seems that he is a person who has already run away from all traditional concepts. He falls in love with Tess, a dairy woman, and he doesn’t care whether she is born in a good family or not.It seems that his love to Tess is true love. However, when it comes to marriage, he still considers Tess’ social status. He wants Tess to take “mistress Teresa d’Urbervilles as her name and he claims that the change “may take an appreciable difference toacceptance of you as my wife”.“After I have made you the well-read woman that I mean to make you” his mother will think much better of her. This means he holds the same idea as his mother to some extent.4.comment:

Firstly I want to say that Tess’ tragedy comes from her helpless and pessimistic characters. As I know, the Durbeyfields were born with downfallen clan.I even called back to mind the dialogue from Tess of the D’urbervilles:

“Tess, are stars either good or bad?

“Yes.I think each star represents a family.”

“Is our star bad?”

“I think so.”

From the above dialogue I got that Tess is pessimistic about her life and reality, which press her to ask Alec for help and laid the seed of her tragedy. She becomes Alec’s victim in the forest. She probably should have known not to put herself in such a situation, but she has few other options. Here, it seems as though she is destined to rely on others, even when they are unreliable. Therefore, I should recognize that her family acts as a considerable accomplice with Alec to a certain extend.Secondly, I am dedicated to analysis the three characters’ attitudes towards love.Who is to blame for this tragic love? Alec, Tess or Angel? Or ridiculous fate? I believe it was Tess herself.Certainly, that bad age and those hypocritical men were executioners

that push Tess into the abyss of destruction. But Tess should have led a better life if she don’t treat herself as a satellite of men.How stupid is she to spend her life waiting for a man who betrayed her and escaped away when she was dying for help! When there is no help offered by men, women should fight on their own instead of waiting for men’s mercy and forgiveness since there is nothing needed to be forgiven. Conclusion: All in all, Women’s tragedy will never come to an end until they treat themselves as totally independent, which means they can lead a normal life with or without men.Bibliography

Review of Tess of the D’Uberville

Abstract Tess of the D’Uberville is the master piece of Thomas Hardy(2 June 1840-----11 January 1928).Tess of the D’Uberville describes the pathetic fate of Tess Durbeyfield,a village girl.Hardy called the heroine “a pure women” in the novel‟s subtitle. He openly challenged the social morality of hypocrisy in the Victorian era.Ⅰ.Introduction The heroine Tess Durbeyfield was born in a poor vendor's family, one day her father John Durbeyfield was told that he is a descendant of the ancient aristocratic German ,the sudden news made him carried away.He and his short-sighted vain wife decided to let her first daughter Tess to clime relatives with a wealthy old women of a rich family, in order to get economic help. The family claimed itself are descendants of German noble family---old D‟Urberville family. In fact the D‟Urbervilles are new rich, they named themselves D‟Urberville.in order to improve their own social status.Tess went to the old women‟s house for the sake of families living, because she was young and lacked social experience, Alec D‟Urberville, the son of the old women tempted and raped her.Tess was very painful and leveaed D‟Urbervilles to her own home, then she was pregnant, the child was abort.People sneered at her and thought she was wanton. After several years of painful life, Tess decided to start a new life. She left home again to TaoBo dairy farm to be a milkmaid, where she knew the pastor's son Angel Clare, they fell in love and engaged.Angel is the son of a pastor with open-minded thinking, upward mobility, good knowledge, gentle manner, and he loved Tess.Tess very worshiped and loved Angel very mch, several times she wanted to told Angel that she was raped by Alec before, but for several sakes she didn‟t implement.A few days before she got married she wrote a long letter to Angel, but the letter was put under the carpet of Angel „s house, that make Angel didn't see this letter. On wedding night, she confessed to her husband about her unfortunate past , but

angel could not forgive her,Angel abandoned her.Thereafter the two people separated, Angel went to Brazil to develop his career, Tess still worked in some farm.Fate let she met Alec D‟Urberville again, when Alec has become a priest, Lust for Tess beated his frail religious beliefs at once, he entangled Tess again, try every way to get her.Because Tess's father died sudden, for the mother, brother and sisters‟s life, she was forced to live together with Alec.Later, Angel Clare returned home from Brazil, he found his wife and said regret for relentless past.In this case, Tess thought painfully that Alec D‟Urberville made her lost Angel second time, ruined her happiness once again. She was with the feelings of utmost frustration and anger, a sense of responsibility at the same time, she killed Alec at last.Tess found Angel ,lived happy, satisfied last five days with Angel, Tess was arrested and hanged finally.II.The analysis of character

More than one hundred years passed, The heroine Tess has already set up in the world literature, not only for this novel goes beyond the traditional virtues, but also for the heroine has great soul and human nature charm, that make Tess be one of the most moving female images.Hardy made a deep interpretation for the western tragedy through the novel heroine Tess's tragic fate : Tess was a pure, beautiful and very industrious village girl, she desired for true, good and beautiful life, but she always was hit by hypocrisy and evils. The tragedy of Tess began with she went “relatives” in order to work for family livelihood.Because she was young and lacked social experience, Alec D‟Urberville cheated Tess‟s virgin chastity, she became a “fallen women”, condemned by public opinion as she was a filthy sinner.Afterwards Tess fell in love with young man Angel Clare , she was abandoned by her husband for told him past stain on wedding night, she lost happiness which just around the corner for her honesty.Due to the high family responsibility and self-sacrifice, Tess forced against her will to be Alec's mistress again, exchange herself for family's survival. Finally her husband came back to her ,she felt angry and disappointed ,she

lifted the sword of revenge to killed Alec, finally have to pay the cost of life, Tess ,a pure ,honest, kind, courageous, beautiful women was completely destroyed finally.Tess, the heroine of Tess of the D’Uberville is an idealized modern women. In Hardy's ideal world, Tess is a symbol of beauty and the embodiment of love, represents all the good aspects of wessex people: beautiful, pure, kind, simple, love, perseverance, and tolerance. She dared to sacrifice herself, dared to resist herself, and Cherished the good life. Her specific feeling is love and trust, has beautiful woman temperament, gentle and soft love, strong will, intense affection. She haven‟t the desire that pursue vanity through marriage, but insist self-esteem to pursue freedom. She want to work ,wish solve family problems by herself, when she ask for help at fake relatives Alec D‟Urberville. As soon as she found cheated, she resolutely left Alec.Tess's soul is pure, morality is noble, but she was be seen as model of immorality, as the embodiment of lewd evil in front of the bourgeois morality. In capitalist society at that time , she became the people's mockery.Hardy‟view sharply opposed temporal social prejudice, He strongly attacked the hypocritical moral standards at that time.Hardy adhere that moral purity is the purity of mind, not depend on an occasional fault, more than her past, it depend on her future, so Tess was “a pure woman”.But people insisted on traditional social customs that an occasional fault was irreversible and unforgivable downfall, so Tess was a sinner who committed the crime of adultery.Hardy believeed that there is no perfect man in the world.Perfection of human nature embody in the understanding for life, love for life, abundant affection and faithful love, perfect purity only come from such perfect things.Although Angel Clare was a good young man, Hardy Severely criticized the

bourgeois ethics that represent by Clare, pointed out that it has become people's spiritual shackles. But just the ethics of customs and habits has a divine nature, is the unwritten law, is considered legitimate forever.Tess just was the victim of the secular fallacy., Hardy deeply revealed the hypocrisy and badness of this kind of moral principles through Tess‟s miserable experience, the cruelty of the moral principles was exposed.III.Conclusion The tragedy of Tess is caused by social tragedy , fate tragedy and character tragedy.1、First, Tess‟s tragedy is social tragedy. The era of Tess's life is in the 1880 s.At this point, the British capitalism not only developed fastly in cities but also in villages(the dairy farm that Tess worked in is a portrayal in the novel). With the invasion of the capitalism, step by step, the countryside farmer tended to bankrupt, became poor.Poor farmer's daughter as Tess was, then wage earner as, her fate was tragic certainly. Therefore, Tess's tragedy is social tragedy and era‟s tragedy.2、Second cause of Tess‟s tragedy, She was the victim of violence, evil forces, and was the victim of laws, state machine that maintain violence and evil forces. This kind of represent of violence, evil forces is Alec D‟Urberville.3、Another main reason of Tess‟s tragedy is that traditional ethics destroyed Tess's spirit.

Tess of the D’UrbervillesThe writer of the book--Thomas Hardy(1840-1928),a poet and novelist. He wrote this novel on a background fulling of turmoil, when England was suffering great changes. The miserable fate of Tess is a typical example of the result of economic poverty, unfair law, hypocritical religions and moral of bourgeoisie that time.Thomas uses his charming words describing a beautiful, laborious woman ,and being destroyed at last---Tess,the heroine, was sent to a rich family, after her father was told thatthey were the descendant of nobles of D’Urbervilles, and then her tragic fate began. She then be seduced by Alec d'Urbervill ,the son of that family, shamed of hers experience, went away and arrive ata farm,to be a milkmaid, met her lover---Angel Clare, and they got married. But when he knew the past of this woman ,he couldn’t accept it and left her, which gave the Alec d'Urbervill a chance to involve into her life again. And at last,Tess found Alec cheated her that Angel would not come back again and love her ,so she killed he and spent her last five days with her Angel ,and being arrested and hanging...After finishing this novel, the plot impresses me most is the last five days Tess spent together with Angle. When she killed Alec d'Urbervill, she running to Angle passionately, and said,”i love you”.holding him tightly. And at that time, they both understood what a great mistake they had made and how wonderful days they had

missed. They relied on each other where there were no people and being together ,enjoyed the sweet and lovely days. All that give me the feeling that within is affection and forgiveness and outside is coldness, the place where will not forgive Tess’s behavior.I am moved by the woman’s courage. She has the courage to kill Alec; She has the courage to stick to her heart and her lover until the last of her life; She has the courage to do and to assume. And i also appreciate the description of environment, especially the use of light and color, which make a link between character and surrounding and indicate the fate of them. When the protagonist is happy, the writer will choose the bright light and color to show his feeling, vice verse. After finishing the novel ,it leave me a question that Who is to blame for this tragedy? Alec, Tess or Angel? Orridiculous fate?I believe they all have no fault.Tess’s

a tragedy, women’s tragedy will never come to an end until they treat themselves as totally independent, which means they can lead

normal life with or without men.

第四篇:Tess 读后感 英文

Tess of the d'Urbervilles

As we all know, “Tess of the d'Urbervilles” is regarded as one of Thomas Hardy's most famous and important masterpieces in the world. In this story,I can clearly find Tess is really a tragic figure which always evokes my profound sympathy and some other strong emotion for her.I was really deep impressed by the poor girl.Tess Urberville, the protagonist ,the eldest daughter in a poor working family ,who looks markedly more mature than she is.she had to work for Alec in order to support her family although she was unwilling to do this.Unfortunately , she was seduced by the so-called gentleman—Alec, which made her life be doomed to become a tragedy.People looked down on her and respected her no more.Actually she did nothing wrong because she knew nothing of men before she was raped. She was just a little girl when she first met that terrible man.She was under the great pressure of the gossips and the church to blame herself for this accident. In order to get rid of the past and begin a new life ,she decided to go to a distant dairy farm.Later she fell in love with her true love--Angel Clare.Soon after their wedding ,Angel confessed the crime he committed to a woman long time ago and asked for Tess’s forgiveness.Tess was not at all angry and forgave Angel at once;in fact she was rather happy and excited for she also had things to confess. She sat and told everything to Angel, hoping he would forgive her as he was forgiven but she was wrong.Instead,he deserted Tess because she wasn't a virgin and she was not as pure as he thought.Angel went to Brazil alone and asked Tess not write to him.Tess waited for his return ,living in a sorrowful and appalling situation。Finally, although she felt depressed ,she still loved Angel.when Angel finally went back to her and asked for her forgiveness, after he regretted what he had done unfair to Tess, she was desperate. That was too late--she had been Alec's maintress.Everything was too late!In order to get rid of Alec,Tess had no choice but to murder him.Everything really

changed! She was executed at last.It was really a terrible tragedy!

When I finished the novel ,I really show my great sympathy for her miserable fate and respect for her bravery ,self-sacrifice and many other excellent qualities.Tess was a pure ,simple and honest ,hardworking ,intelligent, tolerant girl. She was the embodiment of beauty and the symbol of love. She represented all the merits of the villagers in her hometown. She had a strong sense of responsbility and self-respect.Her father was lazy and her mother was vulgar. She was exactly the one who devoted herself to the family. She resisted the temptation of Alec and escaped from him without any hesitation after he raped her.She would rather live a poor life than stay with the terrible man.Besides ,she was also strongwilled and optimistic.Although she was despised by people in the village because of her pregnancy ,she managed to recover from all these and decided to begain a new life at a distant dairy farm.I really admired for her bravery. In addition ,Tess was independent and loyal to love. She refused to get money from either Alec or Angel, she made a living on her own.She worked hard. What’s more, she never yielded to the unfair fate. She was brave enough to kill Alec--the man who ruined her whole life.Although her short life was full of strike ,she was courageous to face the reality and to fight against the evil force.I was deeply moved by her perseverance and bravery. In a word , I admire Tess for her attitudes towards the unfair and miserable fate;I also show my profound sympathy for Tess’s terrible encounters; What's more,I appreciate Tess for her courage to fight against the unfair fate.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles was written by Thomas Hardy(1840---1928), an English novelist who is famous for novels of character and Environment. When he was young, he derived a love of music from his father and a devotion to literature from his mother. He grew up in the Dorset shire, of which the environment there became the main backdrop of his writings. His writings often reflected the change after capitalism intruded the countries in England and the people‟s hard life. The novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles was published in the year 1891, which was his most famous novel. It tells a story of a tragedy life of a pure girl.In the Victorian period, a rural clergyman in England tells D‟Urbervilles, a simple farmer, that he was descended from the illustrious D„Urbervilles family. The D‟Urbervilles couple sent his daughter Tess to a family named D„Urbervilles in order to improve their social status.Tess was asked to feed chickens there and Alec fell in love with Alec, who later raped her, so she left, pregnant. She went back home, gave birth to the baby, named Sorrow who died soon. Some time later, Tess began working as a milkmaid, and there she met her true love Angel Clare. They fell in love, but Angel does not learn of her previous relationship with Alec until their wedding night, and abandoned her.Deserted by her husband, Tess met Alec again, and poverty forced her to resume their relationship.Angel returned from travelling abroad, remorseful at his treatment of Tess, but found her with Alec.Tess murdered Alec in order to run away with Angel. They spent one night of happiness together, before she was arrested. Many people can hardly accept that Tess was pure because on the hand she was chastity but on the other hand she killed somebody. But that opinion only existed in Hardy's time, now, more and more people admire that Tess was a pure woman. As far as I am concerned, Tess was a pure woman.Everybody who has read the novel or watched the movie believed that Tess was a pure woman. And Tess was the incarnation of pure, though she has had some unfortunate experiences. She was regarded as a beautiful, pure, strong and enduring woman. But why we call Tess-a “degenerate” woman-a pure woman?

First, as we know, she was born pure.At the beginning of the movie, we saw many women, all dressed in white, paraded to the main square and there do a dance. One of the “walkers” was Durbeyfield‟s pretty, innocent, sixteen-year old daughter Tess. She was “at this time of her life a mere vessel of emotion, untinctured by experience.” Tess‟s beautiful face, white dress and pure temperament made a good impression to us.Later, she was forced to be a service of the Stokes, working on the estate‟s poultry farm. But unfortunately, she was seduced by Alec, a fraud as well as a morally corrupt person. And from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence.People looked down on her and respected her no more.Actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men.She was just a girl when she first met that terrible man.So we can say that Tess was born pure, she was merely, she didn‟t know Alec would hurt her, it provided that she was a pure girl.Second, Tess‟s love was pure.In the Talbothdays dairy, she met Angel Clare, an educated, reserved, subtle, sad and differing man.As time went on, they knew and loved each other.Angel popped the question to her but she refused him without saying why.She said she loved him deeply and perhaps no one in the world could love him more than she did but she could not marry him for some unspoken reason.Angel wasn‟t satisfied with this vague answer and did his best to win Tess.Somehow she agreed and they soon fixed the wedding day.Soon after their wedding Angel confessed the crime he committed to a woman long time ago and asked for Tess‟s forgiveness.Tess was not at all angry and forgave Angel at once;in fact she was rather happy and excited for she also had things to confess. She sat and told everything to Angel, hoping he would forgive her as he was forgiven but she was wrong. She was not forgiven, not as she thought she was the woman pays.Without Angel‟s love, nothing meant anything to her.The result wasn‟t important now.Tess was arrested for her murder of that so-called gentleman. Why? She still loved Angel and when he finally went back to her and asked for her forgiveness, after he regretted what he had done unfair to Tess, she was desperate. That was too late—Alec had always told Tess that Angel would never come back so he won Tess‟s trust.Unluckily Angel did come back and found Tess.Everything was too late!Tess was deceived and she lost Angel for the second time! The strength of her love was so strong that she had forgotten the difference between right and wrong. Before that she had done nothing wrong but when she killed Alec, everything really changed! She became a criminal! How could it be? She was as pure and innocent as the good wife in the Bible. Her whole character was honest and faithful.Angel figured out at last that a person should be judged not only on what he has done but also on what he wanted to do!Tess‟s impure in body served as a foil to her soul‟s pure. She did not love Alec totally, so she tended to tell the truth to her lover.Tess didn‟t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so she lost her innocence and that‟s all!Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess‟s crime but he was not blamed for it.Why it is always the woman who pays? Why they are always hurt? Why was Tess‟s girlish purity lost? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why do the bad often ruin the good? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak!Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly! In old China there was a culture, which didn‟t think of women as human beings. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are not included!”

People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands‟ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls.Girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn‟t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. What about men? People did not care whether he was an experienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. Now let‟s not be so bitter.Nowadays women‟s situations have become much better. Some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization.Just let those poor painful women like Tess be just a memory. In short, as a girl, we should be self-loved and strong.
