Ladies and gentlemen,Welcome to KM, a beautiful city of eternal spring. My name is Tom, and I am pleased to be your tour guide. An old Chinese saying goes like this: friends should come from afar, isn’t this delightful? So I am very delighted to have this chance to serve you, to show you the most beautiful of KM and YN, to feed you the most delicious local food, to introduce to you the most precious local specialties. In one word, I’ll try my best to help you have a happy and gainful tour here. Now, you must want to know some general info about this city.Situated at the center of YN-GZH Plateau, KM has a history of over 2400 years and now serves as the capital of YN Province. It features pleasant climate all the year round and various natural sceneries as well as places of historical interest.A poem portraits KM like this:
the weather is like April constantly, flowers blossom for four seasons.Hence its name ‘city of eternal spring’.It’s neither hot in summer nor cold in winter. The average temperature in summer is about 23℃ while that in winter is about 9℃, and the average temperature year round is approximately 15℃.There are two distinct seasons here: the dry season and the rainy season. The rainy season is from May to Oct.when the humid air from the Indian Ocean brings rich rainfall. The other months are the dry season with very few rains. So ladies and gentlemen, now you must have a question in your mind: why is the climate like this? The geographical location of KM is about at the same latitude with Guilin, Xiamen and Taipei. But these places are much hotter in summer and colder in winter. The reason mainly lies in the topography and landscape of KM.The city is located on the plateau area with an altitude of over 1800 m.So it’s not very hot in summer. In winter, the high mountains to the north of KM block the cold air from Siberia. Therefore, the affect of the cold air to the weather of KM is not as strong as other areas in China.Consequently, KM enjoys a pleasant climate all the year round.KM’s history goes back over 2000 years to the Waring States Period of ancient China. In BC 279, a general of Chu Kingdom in the area of today’s Hunan and Hubei provinces came here with his troops and settled down near Dianchi Lake which is a large lake adjoining the southwest edge of today’s KM city.In AD 109, during the reign of emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, the city of “Kunzhou” was established to the southeast of present day Kunming.Towards the end of the Yuan Dynasty, which was about 600 years ago, this area became known as KM County. In 1832, a traditional city with high wall was erected, which became Kunming municipality in 1928.In the book Guide to China the author says that if your time is limited while visiting China and you could only afford to travel around one place, the best choice is YN Province, because it is the most ethnically diverse province in China with various landscapes. It’s absolutely true.26 ethnic groups inhabit different areas of YN Province.During the long course of history, each ethnic group has developed their own unique culture and diverse customs. In different ethnic communities we can see different architectures, costumes, and taste local foods of various flavor, of which the most famous one is Across Bridge Rice Noodle whose name originated from an ancient legend. Most of the ethnic groups are good at singing and dancing and they also have their own traditional festivals, such as the Torch Festival of the Yi people, the Splashing Water Festival of the Dai people.Their marital customs are also different, among which the most amazing one is that of Muosuo people who is a branch of Naxi ethnic group and lives in Shangri-la.They actually don’t get married all their life.I’ll explain to you the details during our tour later. Now we’ve arrived at our hotel. Please gather your belongings and follow me.

Good morning!ladies and gentlemen: Today we will go and visit the yuelu academy!yuelu academy is one of the four famous academies in china, and it was established by zhudong, magistrate of tanzhou prefecture in 976a.d at the time of northern song dynasty.the academy accepted disciples throughout the song, yuan, ming and qing dynasties.it was only in 1903 that the academy was transformed from a school of traditional confucian learning to an insitute of higher learning and in 1926 it was officially named hunan university.Early in 1015, emperor zhen zong of the song dynasty awarded the academy hid majesty“s own handwriting ”yuelu academy“ on a tablet.form then on many famous scholars and great thinkers gave lectures here, among them were zhangshi, zhuxi and wangyangming, thus making a great impact on the province”s culture and education.most of the existing buildings here were constructions of the ming and qing dynasties, and the bulk of the engraved stone plates and inscribed tablets have all been kept intact, in 1956 the academy was listed as a historical site at the provincial level and later, in 1988 it became a historical site at the state level.the last restoration project started in 1981 and the major part was completed in 1987.Now, here we are at the “he xi platform”, “he xi” means the “the splendour of the sunrise”, it was named by zhuxi, a great idealist philosopher of the confucian school during the song dynasty, the platform was first built on the top of yuelu hill, by zhanshi, and later in 1528, a pavilion was built on it, but it became deserted with the passing time.in 1790 luodian, the master of the academy, built a platform at the present site, in 1820, the succeeding master, ouyang houjun, renamed it “he xi platform” in order to memory zhuxi and zhanshi.it was restored in 1868.On the inner walls of the platform are two big chinese characters “fu” and “shuo”, which mean “blessing” and “longevity” respectively.legend has it that the character “shuo ”was written with a broom soaked in yellow mud by a taoist master at the time master luodian was attending a banquet in honour of the examination officials and those dispels who had passed the civil exam hence it has been regarded as having “celestial touch” the character “fu” was written by luodian, the master himself. This gate in front of us is the main gate, the gate was formerly built at the time of the song dynasty, and was then called “central gate”.the main gate underwent both destruction and reconstruction in the course of time.the present structure was once
thoroughly renovated in 1868.The characters “yuelu academy” on the horizontal tablet were inscribed by emperor zhen zong of the song dynasty.it was presented as an award to zhoushi, the master of the academy, when he was summoned to the emperor“s presence.on both door posts are couplets which read ”
the kingdom of chu, unique home of the talents, the academy of yuelu, the very cradle of all “.it was composed in the qing dynasty by the master of the academy, yuan jiangang and his disciple zhang renjie. This gate was the second gate, it was first built in 1527 during the ming dynasty.it underwent repairs and restoration many times.it was completely devastated during the anti-japanese war.in 1984, the gate was restored to its former state. This is the lecture hall, where the students had lessons here, it was first built at the time of the song dynasty and was once named ”jing yi hall“.now, it has a more elaborate name ”the hall of the loyalty, filiality honesty and integrity“, because on the inner walls of the hall are engraved four big chinese characters:” loyalty, filiality, honesty and integrity.they were handwriting by the great scholar, zhuxi, who once lectured here.others, such as the school regulations, the administrations and way to read were masterpieces of the masters of the academy.on the two horizontal tablets hanging on top were written: “Learn before you can probe the infiniteness of the universe.” “The doctrines taught here in the south are genuine confucian doctrines.” They were inscribed by the emperor kangxi and qianlong respectively during the qing dynasty. The building in front of us is the yushu library, “yushu” literally means “imperial books”, so yushu library ,built in 999a.d in the early song dynasty, was a place to keep imperial books.books were continuously sent here during the succeeding dynasties.the library was first named “classics treasuring house” in the song dynasty, “classic venerating house” in the yuan and ming dynasties, and finally “yushu library” in the qing dynasty,.it had been repaired and expanded many times, and now it has a collection of over twenty thousand chinese classics.this building was rebuilt on its original site in 1986.The two small pavilions xi quan and ni lan , built during the song and ming dynasties, were restored to the right and left of the compound galleries in order to display cultural relics.

The well-known Zhaozhou Bridge, a large stone arch bridge on Xiao River in Zhaozhou, Hebei Province, is also known as Anji Bridge. It is the largest and oldest stone arch bridge in the world about which over the years many beautiful folk stories have been circulating. One day in the Spring and Autumn Period, the skilful artisan Lu Ban of the State of Lu arrived on the bank of Xiao River, carrying his tools on his back.On the swift waters of the wide river he saw two small ferryboats hurrying to and fro with passengers.A crowd of people were meanwhile waiting anxiously on the bank, some with wheelbarrows, others with heavy loads on their shoulder poles. But the ferryboat could carry only a small number of people aboard.Suddenly Lu Ban heard some say, “If only a bridge could be built over the river!” When he saw all this, Lu made up his mind to build a bridge across Xiao River for the people of Zhaozhou.According to the legend, at that very evening, Lu brought back some snow-white stone blocks from the Taihang Mountains to the south, and set to work immediately. At the daybreak when the cock crowed, Lu laid the last two stone labs on the bridge and the job was done.Picking up his tools, Lu Ban went on his way again to see what he could do for the people in other places.Zhaozhou Bridge is 50.82 meters long and 9.6 meters wide, the span of the large stone arch in the middle measuring 37.37 meters. There are two smaller symmetrical arches, one at each end. This kind of structure not only requires less building material but makes sluicing at times of flood easier. The bridge floor is smooth and flat with pavements for pedestrians on both sides, while carriages and carts can move in the middle. The apex of the arch is fairly high so that boats can easily clear it.The bridge is ingeniously designed with a well-proportioned layout, a solid structure, and a magnificent and attractive outward appearance. At both ends of the bridge, willow branches sway graceful, while, seen from the afar, the inverted image of the arch in the water resembles a rainbow spanning the Xiao River.News spread quickly that Lu Ban had built a stone arch bridge overnight.Towns people as well as villagers near and far flocked there in excitement to have a look at the bridge.Such a miracle also aroused the interest of Chai Rong the Fairy and one of the “Eight Legendary Immortals” Zhang Guolao. They wanted to test whether this large stone arch bridge was solid enough, and so decided to play a practical joke on Lu Ban.One night, Zhang Guolao came riding on a donkey, facing backward. On the back of the donkey were hung two heavy sacks containing in one the “sun” and the other the “moon”.Then came Chai Rong pushing a barrow on which were loaded the “five famous mountains.” Arriving together at the bridge, they met Lu Ban and asked him whether they could cross the bridge at the same time.Lu replied proudly, “Why, such a solidly-built bridge not being able to carry the two of you? Go ahead, please.” But to his astonishment, the bridge began to wobble as soon as they set foot upon it.Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Lu Ban jumped into the water and, with all his might, tried to prop up the eastern half of the bridge. In this way the two immortals were able to cross the bridge with their “sun” and “moon” and the “five famous mountains.” From then on, the bridge bore the hoof prints of the donkey Zhang Guolao rode, the dent left by Chai Rong's knee where he knelt on the ground, and the grooves left the wheel of the barrow. There was also Lu Ban's hand print where he tried to prop up the bridge.Today, the “imprints of immortals” are still there except Lu Ban's hand print because of a partial collapse later of the eastern half of the bridge.Lu Ban, Zhang Guolao and Chai Rong did not belong to the same age and so couldn't have met each other in the first place. It is also evident that Lu ban could not have built such a large stone bridge overnight. The myths and legends, however, are a reflection of the admiration felt by ordinary people for this stone arch bridge and the foud memory they cherish for its builders. In spite of the buffeting of the elements and the visitation of natural disasters over more than a thousand years, this large stone arch bridge still stands rock firm today. When, one may then ask, was Zhaozhou Bridge built? And who was it that designed and built it? The person in charge of its design and construction was an artisan called Li Chun who lived more than 13,000 years ago in the Sui Dynasty. His creativity and ingenuity in bringing into shape a bridge of such a unique design and structure have won the admiration of all.The Zhaozhou Stone Arch Bridge was technologically the most advanced in the world then.It was remarkable achievement in the history of ancient Chinese civilization, turning over a new leaf in the annals of bridge construction in the world.Bridge building projects with a similar design did not appear in Europe until the 14th century, that is, more than seven hundred years later than the Zhaozhou Bridge.

西安华清池英文导游词
Huaqing Pool is situated about 35 kilometres east of the city of Xi’an.Historically, the Western Zhou dynasty saw the construction of the Li Palace on the spot.In the Qin dynasty a pool was built with stones, and was given the name Lishan Tang(the Lishan Hot Spring). The site was extended into a palace in the Han dynasty, and renamed the Li Palace(the Resort Palace). In the Tang dynasty, Li Shimin(Emperor Tai Zong)ordered to construct the Hot Spring Palace, and Emperor Xuan Zong had a walled palace built around Lishan Mountain in the year of 747.It was known as the Huaqing Palace. It also had the name Huaqing Pool on account of its location on the hot springs.Huaqing Pool is located at the foot of the Lishan Mountain, a branch range of the Qinling Ranges, and stands 1,256 metres high.It is covered with pines and cypresses, looking very much like a dark green galloping horse from a long distance. So it has the name of the Lishan Mountain(Li means a black horse). The Tang dynasty Emperor Xuan Zong and his favourite lady, Yang Gui Fei used to make their home at Frost Drifting Hall in winter days. When winter came, snowflakes were floating in the air, and everything in sight was white. However, they came into thaw immediately in front of the hall.It owed a great deal to the luke warm vapour rising out of the hot spring. This is the Frost Drifting Hall that greets us today.Close by the Frost Drifting Hall lies the Nine Dragon Pool.According to legend, the Central Shaanxi Plain was once stricken by a severe drought in the very remote past. Thus, by the order of the Jade Emperor(the Supreme Deity of Heaven), an old dragon came at the head of eight young ones, and made rain here.Yet when the disaster was just abating, they lowered their guard so much that it became serious again. In a fit of anger, the Jade Emperor kept the young dragons under the Jade Cause Way(玉堤), with the Morning Glow Pavilion and the Sunset Pavilion built at both ends of it respectively, to make the young dragons spout cleat water all day long to meet the needs of local irrigation.Besides, he had the old dragon confined to the bottom of the Roaring Dragon Waterside Pavilion situated at the upper end of the Jade Causeway, and obliged him to exercise control over the young. The Nine-Bend Corridor west of the Nine Dragon Pool leads directly to the Marble Boat, which resembles a dragon boat on the water surface. In the Marble Boat lies the Nine Dragon Tang(the Nine Dragon Hot Spring where Emperor Xuan Zong used to take baths). At the head of his court ladies and hundreds of his officials, he would come to the Huanqing Palace to spend his winter days in October of the Lunar calendar and return to Chang’an City as the year drew to its close. The Nine Dragon Hot Spring was originally built with crystal jade, whose surface was decorated with the carvings of fish, dragons, birds and flowers. In it twin lotus flowers also carved with white jade could be seen as well. The spring water welled from the break of an earthen jar, and spouted up to the lotus flowers.Hence the name Lotus Flower Tang(the Lotus Flower Hot Spring). The Gui Fei Bathing Pool was where Yang Gui Fei, Emperor Xuan Zong’s favorite lady, used to take bath.It was originally built with white jade, and in its center a blooming flower spouted water like a spring. The pool looked very much like a Chinese flowering crabapple;Hence its name the Chinese
Flowering Crabapple Hot Spring or the Lotus Hot Spring..Lady Yang used to make a stay in this pavilion to see sights or to air her hair after a bath. Therefore, it was named the Hair Airing Pavilion.Whether the sun was rising or setting, the pavilion was aglow with sunshine;hence the name the Flying Roseate Pavilion.Southwest of the Gui Fei Bathing Pool stands a brick-built pavilion. On its head three big Chinese characters “Xi Jia Lou”(Fine Sunset-Bathed Pavilion)are inscribed according to the model of the most celebrated according to the model of the most celebrated Chinese calligrapher, Yu You Ren, here is the source of the spring water. At this spa there are four hot springs. They have an hourly flow of 112 tons, and a constant temperature of 43°C.The spring water contains lime, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate and other minerals, which makes it suitable for bathing and considerable treatment of quite a few diseases such as dermatosis, rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain. The Fine Sunset-Bathed Pavilion marks the first source of the spring water, which was discovered some 3,000 years ago, roughly in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Its water flow averages 25 tons per hour.Take up the steps east of the source of hot springs, you will gradually see the Five-Room Pavilion where Chiang Kaishek made a temporary stay during the Xi’an Incident. The Xi’an Incident took place on December 12, 1936, and it is also known as the Double Twelfth Incident. After the Incident of September 18, 1936, the Japanese imperialists seized the three provinces northeast of China, and intensified their invasion of North China. This was the very moment vital to the Chinese nation.Yet Chiang Kaichek persisted doggedly in carrying out his reactionary policy “domestic tranquility is a must for the resistance against Japanese invades,” and commanded the Northeast Army and Northwest Army, respectively headed by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, to attack the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region.Inspired by our Party’s policy “let us stop the internal war and unit to resist the Japanese aggressors,” those two generals made to Chiang Kaishek the proposal of forming a united front with the Communist Party for the resistance. Not only did he reject the proposal, but flew to Xi’an to scheme the “suppression of the Communist Party.” And the slaughter of the patriotic youth.Out of patriotism, Zhang and Yang started the famous Xi’an Incident.Very early on the morning of December 12, 1936 the Incident was impending.Zhang Xueliang, together with Yang Hucheng ordered a squad of bodyguards to surround the Huaqing Pool. They fought a fierce battle there, and wiped out Chiang’s bodyguards in one vigorous effort. The sound of firing came to Chiang Kaishek, and he was so terrified that he crept out of the window with his nightgown and slippers only. What’s more, he hurt his spinal bone, and lost one of his slippers while crossing over the back wall.He staggered up Lishan Mountain, and hid himself behind a stone in the crevice halfway on it.Those brave soldiers began to search the mountain immediately when they rushed into the Five-Room Pavilion to find that Chiang’s hat and clothes were still there and that his quilt remained warm.In the end they found Chiang Kaishek, and thus escorted him to Xi’an.In order to avoid a civil war and try t establish a national united front for the resistance against
Japan, Mao Zedong on behalf of the C.C.P.C.insisted on a peaceful settlement of the Incident. Therefore, a delegation headed by Zhou Enlai was sent to Xi’an.Zhou Enlai and his suite did a large amount of work there, took everything possible into consideration, and ultimately forced Chiang Kaishek to accept the proposal by his two generals. On December 25, Chiang was freed, and flew back to Nanjing. The Xi’an Incident was so peacefully settled
The peaceful settlement of the Incident put an end to the internal war which had lasted for ten years, and accelerated the formation and development of the national united front for the anti-Japanese drive. Moreover, it showed that the co-operative relationships between the Communist and Nationalists arrived at a new stage. It marked a great turning point in modern Chinese history. In the year of 1946 the KMT government had a “National Rejuvenation Pavilion” built near the crevice where Chiang Kaishek had hidden himself in the Incident. It was also called “Vital Energy Pavilion”.After the national liberation it was renamed “Catching Chiang Pavilion”.Close by the pavilion stands a wooden board which carries a brief introduction to the Xi’an Incident.Iron chains and rings in the crevices east of the pavilion, by which visitors can climb up to take a look at Chiang Kaishek’s shelter.Up the winding path east of the Five-Room-Pavilion you will catch sight of a bridge-like construction. It shines regularly with a myriad of evening sun rays both in summer and autumn, and looks very much like rainbow. So it has the name of the Hovering Rainbow Bridge.Located on the Xixiu Ridge(the West Embroidery Ridge)of the Lishan Mountain, the remains of the beacon tower of the Western Zhou Dynasty seem easy to identify. The beacon tower was mostly built at the top of the mountain to give border alarm in ancient times. It was constantly under special control.Once the enemies were pressing on towards the border, the beacon tower began to take effect: it was made to smoke in the daytime while set on fire at night. The story goes that Bao Si, Queen of the Western Zhou dynasty was highly honored, yet she never cracked a smile.King You tried many ways to put a smile on her face, but he failed over and over again. He “called his court band to toll bells and beat gongs”, and she pulled a long face. Then the band were asked to “play the bamboo flute and strings” and she remained displeased.Afterwards, “maids of honour served wine, festively singing and dancing,” and she did not let out a smile at all.“You don’t like music! What on earth are you fond of?” the King asked
“I nearly have a liking for nothing. But I can still well remember I liked to give ear to the sound of tearing a piece of coloured silk when I was a child. It was clear anf melodious,” she replied.King You said in excitement, “That is very simple. How come you didn’t let me know it earlier?”
Thus he ordered the officially appointed property manager to offer coloured silk, and made fresh and energetic maids of honour to tear it into pieces.Hundreds of bolts of coloured silk were utterly torn, but Bao Si remained unmoved.“Why didn’t you let out a single smile then?” he asked.“I have never smiled so far, ” the Queen replied. The King tried over and over again, but failed repeatedly, and in the end he gave orders, “Anyone both in and out of court who can amuse Bao Si will be awarded one thousand pieces of gold.”
Afterwards Guo Shifu, a treacherous court official came and offered advice: “Set the beacon tower on fire and fool your sovereign rulers.” That night the King and Queen reached the Lishan Mountain by carriage, and gave the order. In the split second the flames of the fire lit up the sky ad the sovereign rulers moved their troops immediately to the Lishan Mountain. There they found nothing but that the King and Queen enjoyed drinking festively. The King then dispatched his bodyguard to inform them that “Everything should have been all right.I have just been joking with you.” When they got this, they looked at each other in blank dismay, and left disappointed.Sure enough, Bao Si burst into laughter, stroking her hands when she noticed all the troops come in vain and go noisily.Accordingly, Guo Shifu got a prize of one thousand pieces of gold.Later on King You did so more often than not.In 771 B.C.Quan Rong(a then minority tribe)staged an armed rebellion against the Western Zhou Dynasty.King You ordered urgently to set the beacon tower on fire, but all the sovereign rulers remained unmoved.Consequently King Yu was killed, and Bao Si was taken away. The Western Zhou dynasty vanished.Herein come the Chinese idiom “A single smile costs one thousand pieces of gold” and “The sovereign rulers are fooled by the beacon fire.”
