An Analysis of College Enrollment Expansion

The table and the line graphs show the number of students enrolled by first-category universities, second-category universities, and third-category universities from 1997 to 2005.From 1997 to 1999, the enrollment of first-category universities increased steadily from 420,000 to 630,000 and the corresponding(对应的)blue curve reached its peak of 700,000 in 2000.However, since 2001, there was a drop in the curve and it begins to level off(稳定下来).There are certain similarities between the curve of first-category universities and that of second-category universities---both increasedrapidly from 1997 to 2000, but the pink curve rose drastically, reflecting the admission number skyrocketing from 550,000 to 1,200,000 in that period.However, from 2000, the increase rate slowed down, and there is the least difference in the numberof enrollees between 2004 and 2005, and the trend continues throughout the curve.With the introduction of third-category universities in 2003, the yellow curve shows a sharp rise from 1,050,000 in 2003 to 1,400,000 in 2005, and this trend is likely to continue.In order to provide educational opportunities for more high school graduates, authorities decided to expand college enrollment.However, some unexpected problems arose.As the number of enrollees climbed rapidly, universities could not provide enough accommodations(住宿), education facilities or qualified teachers.Therefore, parents, students and teachers complained that campuses became overcrowded and there was a decline in teaching quality.From 2001, in order to ensure quality education, the number of students enrolled by first-category universities dropped gradually;meanwhile, the increasing enrollment rate of second-category universities began to slow down and level off.In 2003, many third-category universities were established in order to satisfy people’s needs for diversified(多种多样的)higher education.Up till now, much progress has been made to balance and reform the structure of higher education.However, we must remember that it is only the first step in the right direction.Let’s continue to contribute our efforts and ideas.To provide best higher education for eligible(合适的，合格的)high school graduates and all college students, we still have a long way to go.Making the World a Better Place to Live
