A.The world is not hungry , but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of(短缺)water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly(直接地).Man can only drink and use the 3%-the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted(污染).Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid(避免)a serious water shortage later on? The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea.All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world.Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it.So you see, if we can find a way out, we'll be in no danger of drying up..The world is thirsty because ________.A.3/4 of the earth is covered with water

What could I do? Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers(警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then , with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church(教堂).One of the offices came to me.“Right, sir, ” he said.“Do you need any more help now?”

I didn't quite understand.“Thanks, officer, ” I said.“You've been very kind.I lived just down the road.”

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf.“Well, Well, ” he said and laughed.“It's a bookshelf you've got there! We thought it was-er, something else.”

3.What's on the wall?

4.Where are the flowers?

5.What colour is Betty's hat?

There is a map of England and a photo.4、文章没有说花在桌子上,但钟在桌子上,花在它的旁边,当然花在桌子上,故答案为They're on the table.5、文章也没讲Betty的帽子是什么颜色,但把床上的帽子误认为黑色的猫。

Lead Pollution Lead deposits, which accumulated in soil and snow during the 1960’s and 70’s, were primarily the result of leaded gasoline emissions originating in the United States. In the twenty years that the Clean Air Act has mandated unleaded gas use in the United States, the lead accumulation worldwide has decreased significantly.A study published recently in the journal Nature shows that air-borne leaded gas emissions from the United States were the leading contributor to the high concentration of lead in the snow in Greenland. The new study is a result of the continued research led by Dr.Charles Boutron, an expert on the impact of heavy metals on the environment at the National Center for Scientific Research in France.A study by Dr.Boutron published in 1991 showed that lead levels in arctic(北极的)snow were declining. In his new study, Dr.Boutron found the ratios of the different forms of lead in the leaded gasoline used in the United States were different from the ratios of European, Asian and Canadian gasolines and thus enabled scientists to differentiate(区分)the lead sources. The dominant lead ratio found in Greenland snow matched that found in gasoline from the United States. In a study published in the journal Ambio(人类环境杂志), scientists found that lead levels in soil in the Northeastern United States had decreased markedly since the introduction of unleaded gasoline. Many scientists had believed that the lead would stay in soil and snow for a longer period. The authors of the Ambio study examined samples of the upper layers of soil taken from the same sites of 30 forest floors in New England, New York and Pennsylvania in 1980 and in 1990.The forest environment processed and redistributed the lead faster than the scientists had expected.Scientists say both studies demonstrate that certain parts of the ecosystem(生态系统)respond rapidly to reductions in atmospheric pollution, but that these findings should not be used as a license to pollute.1.The study published in the journal Nature indicates that A.the US is the major source of lead pollution in arctic snow.B.the Clean Air Act has not produced the desired results.C.lead will stay in soil and snow longer than expected.D.lead deposits in arctic snow are on the increase. 2.Lead accumulation worldwide decreased significantly after the use of unleaded gas in the US A.was discouraged.B.was prohibited by law.C.was enforced by law.D.was introduced.

3.How did scientists discover the source of lead pollution in Greenland A.By analyzing the data published in journals like Nature and Ambio.B.By comparing the chemical compositions of leaded gasoline used in various countries.C.By observing the lead accumulations in different parts of the arctic area.D.By studying the chemical elements of soil and snow in Northeastern America. 4.The authors of the Ambio study have found that A.forests get rid of lead pollution faster than expected.B.lead deposits are widely distributed in the forests of the US.C.lead accumulations in forests are more difficult to deal with.D.the upper layers of soil in forests are easily polluted by lead emissions. 5.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that scientists A.feel relieved by the use of unleaded gasoline.B.are puzzled by the mystery of forest pollution.C.lack sufficient means to combat lead pollution.D.still consider lead pollution a problem.

1 A lateral move that hurt my pride and blocked my professional progress promoted me to abandon my relatively high profile career although, in the manner of a disgraced government minister, I covered my exit by claiming “I wanted to spend more time with my family”.[分析]此句主干是“a lateral move promoted me to...”。其中that hurt my pride and blocked my professional progress是a lateral move的定语,although, in the manner of a disgraced http:///kcnet1480/ government minister, I covered my exit by claiming “I wanted to spend more time with my family”是状语,其中逗号之间的in the manner of a disgraced government minister是插入语。

2 Curiously, some twoandahalf years and two novels later, my experiment in what the Americans term “downshifting” has turned my tired excuse into an absolute reality.[分析]此句主干是“...my experiment...has turned my tired excuse into an absolute reality”。

3 I have discovered, as perhaps Kelsey will after her muchpublicized resignation from the editorship of She after a buildup of stress, that abandoning the doctrine of “juggling your life”, and making the alternative move into “downshifting” brings with it far greater rewards than financial success and social status.[分析]此句中I have discovered是主句的主谓结构,that abandoning the doctrine of “juggling your life”, and making the alternative move into “downshifting” brings with it far greater rewards than financial success and social status是主句的宾语,其中abandoning the doctrine of “juggling your life”, and making the alternative move into “downshifting”为该宾语从句的主语,brings为谓语。as perhaps Kelsey will after her muchpublicized resignation from the editorship of She after a buildup of stress既是伴随状语,又是插入语,其主语为Kelsey,谓语为will,而after her muchpublicized

resignation from the editorship of She after a buildup of stress是本插入语中的时间状语。

4 Downshifting—also known in America as “voluntary simplicity”—has, ironically, even bred a new area of what might be termed anticonsumerism.[分析]此句主干是“Downshifting has bred a new area...”,破折号之间的是插入结构,ironically也是插入语,可放在句首,what相当于thought which。

5 For the women of my generation who were urged to keep juggling through the ’80s, downshifting in the mid’90s is not so much a search for the mythical good life—growing your own organic vegetables, and risking turning into one—as a personal recognition of your limitations.[分析]此句主干是“...downshifting in the mid’90s is not...”。其中who were urged to keep juggling through the ’80s是修饰the women of my generation的定语从句。growing your own http:///kcnet1480/ organic vegetables, and risking turning into one既是插入语,又是the mythical good life的同位语。本句中not so much A(a search for the mythical good life)as B(a personal recognition of your limitations)的句式含义,即“与其说是A,不如说是B”。

在第三段第一句,juggling one’s life与downshifting恰好是相对立的两种生活方式,说明她从a buildup of stress取得的financial success and social status远不及
