You need other people for network. Here’s what he means.Until the internet and e-mail came along, our social network involved flesh-and-blood relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person in real life. But the latest study confirms that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced a great deal of social activities and person-to-person interaction. Some people worry that the Internet is turning us into isolated people who shut out other people in favor of a false world on computer screens To the contrary, the study discovered that the Internet connects us with more real people than expected-helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college.About 60 million Americans told the researchers that the Internet plays an important or crucial role in helping them deal with major life decisions. So we network individuals are pretty tricky: we’re keeping more to ourselves, while at the same time reaching out to more people, all with just the click of a computer mouse!44.The term “networked individualism” is used to refer to ________.A the way that modern people communicate on the Internet B a social activity popular with North Americans C the contradiction within network communication D a newly invented Internet software 45.With the wide use of Internet, some people fear that____.A people will become isolated B interpersonal relation will disappear C people will be controlled by network D there will be too many social activities 46.According to the latest research, electronic interaction through computer is ______.A highly rewarding B a waste of time C only informative D an escape from social life 47.Why does the writer say network individuals are tricky? A Because they sometimes play tricks on people.B Because they refuse person-to-person communication.C Because they can stay alone while remaining sociable.D Because they feel puzzled when communicating with each other.Passage Four “I love you Bob.” “I love you too, Nancy.” it was 2 a.m., and I was hearing my parents’ voices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs.Their loving words were sweet, touching—and surprising. My parents married on September 14, 1940, after a brief dating. She was nearly 30 and knew it was time to start a family. The handsome well-educated man who came by the office where she worked looked like a good bet.He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn’t last long.Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel;he hated the thought. He loved golf;she did not.He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the perceived shortcomings of their respective in-laws.There was a hope that they would change once they retired, and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness.“I always thought we’d …” my mother would begin, before launching into a precise listing of my father’s faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today.as he listened, my father would say angry threats and curses in a low voice. It wasn’t the happiest marriage, but as their 60th anniversary(纪念日)approached, my sister and I decided to throw a party.Sixty years was a long time, after all;why not try to make the best of things? We’d provide the cakes, the balloons, the toasts, and they’d follow one rule: no fighting. The agreement was honored. We had a wonderful day. When we thought back, we found it was an important celebration, because soon after, things began to change for my parents.48.Bob married Nancy because of ______.A her nice appearance B her good education C her romantic nature D her position as an office girl 49.When the writer told the story, the mother was probably ___ years old.A 60 B 70 C 80 D 90 50.What do we know about the writer’s parents? A Their marriage is a total failure.B They had different hobbies.C They had serious money problem.D They stopped quarrelling after they had children.51.The purpose for the writer to hold the party is____.A to recall the 60 years’ marriage life of her parents B to stop the long fighting between her parents C just to celebrate her parents’ 60th anniversary D to have a good time for family’s reunion Passage Five What can you do to recall your dreams more often and interpret them more clearly? The experts offer these suggestions: Develop an idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topic or a person you’d like to dream about.Raise a question that’s troubling you and see how your dream responds to it.Keep track.Next to your bed, place a pen and some paper, or a tape recorder or a laptop(笔记本电脑), to record your dreams as soon as you wake up.Try to wake up naturally, without the help of an alarm clock or barking dog that can interrupt your dream cycle. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to sleep in during the week, begin your dream journey on a weekend or during a vocation.Wake up slowly. For the first moment after you wake up, lie still and keep your eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept.Try to recall the dream and then store it in your memory by giving it a name like “Late for an Exam” or “My Dare with Ashley Judd” when you rise, immediately wrote down as many images, feeling and impressions as you can.Connect the dots.To better interpret your dreams, try to make connection between your recalled dreams and recent events.Do you recognize people from the present or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for partners over several dreams that might help explain an individual dream.Change the outcome. If you have nightmares happening again and again that make it different to sleep, try to change the endings.Once you wake up from a bad dream, imagine a change in the action to create more positive outcome. If you are trapped, try to fly.In your dream, you can do what you want!52.The passage advices you to” wake up slowly” ______.A because dreaming usually happens not long before you wake up B because sleeping posture may be related to your dream C so as not to connect your dreams D so as not to have a nightmare 53.The underlined word “rise”(Paragraph 6)means”_____”.A come up B stand up C wake up D get up 54.According to the passage, how can you overcome a nightmare? The year 2000 will bring big changes in communication.Cell phones will be small enough to carry in your pocket.Videophones will let you see the person you are talking to on the phone.Tiny hand size computers will know your favorite subjects. The Internet and email will be everywhere.Technologists believe 2000 will be the year of video messaging. You will be able to see whom you're talking to.Also in the near future small wireless boxes will pick up information from satellites. In 5 years, computers won't need to be connected through wires. All of this will be good for rural areas and countries that don't have cable or telephone now.In 20 years you may only need to think about something and the computer will do it.Constance Hale is the author of Sin and Syntax, “I believe that email has been an incredible boon to communication.People are writing today where they would have been telephoning yesterday. So people are engaging with words more than they have for the last couple generations.”

If people use email and the Internet more, it could make people better readers and writers. Some people think the most important part of communication is to make people understand each other better. Will technology make that easier?

The translator also comes in handy in medical emergencies.Tam Dinh says, “Where people are injured it's always important to get as much information as quickly as possible.”

Bob Parks is an Associate Editor of Wired Magazine, “Bob's morning begins at about 6:45 am.and Bob is kind of mad, because Bob usually gets up at around 7:15 and likes to cut it close with his morning commute, but I look at my radio and it says that there's a traffic jam on 101 South and I'm gonna need an extra 1/2 hour. And so my radio has got a net connection, wireless net connection as well as a good old powercord to the wall and it has received notice that there's a traffic jam and it has calculated an extra 1/2 hour commute time.”

Some day everything may be connected to the Internet.Your refrigerator will add milk to your Internet grocery list when the date on the carton has passed.Light bulbs will be ordered before they burn out. It's fun to try to guess the future.Usually the predictions are wrong. The one thing we know for sure is that we can't imagine how technology will change. How will wireless computers and Internet services help rural areas?

A.One of the biggest barriers to Internet use is getting wires into rural areas.B.The wireless computers will be cheaper.C.People in rural areas don't have anything else to do.D.People in rural areas already have wireless boxes on their roofs.【正确答案】:A

In which case mentioned in the passage would an automatic language translator be helpful?

A.A medical emergency.B.Police action.C.Traveling.D.All of the above.【正确答案】:A

A.The electricity had gone off during the night.B.Bob had set the alarm wrong.C.Bob did not want to be late.D.The Internet had informed the radio of a traffic jam.【正确答案】:D

When I was about 12 1 had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. We ek by week her list grew: I was skinny, I wasn't a good student, I was boyish, I talked too loud, and so on.I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger, I ran to my father in tears. He listened to my outburst quietly. Then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not?”

True? I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it?

“Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion.Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true.Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change(like being skinny), but a good number I could and suddenly wanted to change. For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself.I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That's just for you,” he said.“You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it.But you've got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you'll know it.You'll find that it will echo inside you.”

Brooklyn,is a man of many solutions, many of them creative, many of them, apparently, also effective. In New York City, only about 50 percent of students manage to graduate in four years. At Bedford Academy 63 percent of the students qualify for free lunch,a majority of which are being raised by a single mother and another significant number are being raised by someone other than a parent.Yet close to 95 percent of students graduate, and actually every one of those goes on to college.

Mr.Leonard does not achieve those results by admitting only high-testing students into his school.Of the students arriving with lower test scores,Mr.Leonard says that he is not looking for the students with the highest grades,or even the best behavior. He’ S looking for the ones who understand his basic mission of discipline and respect, and are willing to devote themselves to his regular training course.

The Bedford Academy High School is famous for its autonomy. For Mr.Leonard, autonomy means insisting that all entering students spend their Saturday mornings in preparatory classes the summer before they enroll.Autonomy also means an automatic weeklong suspension for any student who “disrespects a female,”said Mr.Leonard.It means requiring struggling students,in the weeks before the Regents exams,to attend studying sessions on Saturday from 9 a.m.until 9 p.m.It means the most senior, experienced teachers, including Mr.Leonard, teach not the school’S academic jewels, but the most struggling students.

And autonomy also means the school’ S teachers administer almost no homework.Instead they emphasize after-school tutoring where the teachers Can keep a better eye on whether the student is actually grasping the material.

People joke that no one in Los Angeles reads;everyone watches TV, rents videos,or goes to the movies. The most popular reading material is comic books, movie magazines, and TV guide s.City libraries have only 10 percent of the traffic that car washes have. But how do you explain this? An annual book festival in west Los Angeles is flourishing year after year.People wait half an hour for a parking space to become available.

This outdoor festival, sponsored by a newspaper, occurs every April for one weekend. This year’ s attendance was estimated at 70,000 on Saturday and 75,000 on Sunday. The festival consisted of 280 exhibitors. There were about 90 talks given by authors, with an audience question-and-answer period foilowing each talk.Autograph(亲笔签名)seekers sought out more than 150 authors.A food court sold all kinds of popular food and diverse foreign foods, from American hamburgers to Hawaiian shave ice drinks.Except for a $7 parking fee,the festival was free.Even so,some people avoided the food court prices by staying away and having their own sandwiches and drinks.People came from all over California. One couple drove down from San Francisco.“This is our sixth year here now.We love it,”said the husband.“It’s just fantastic to be in the great outdoors,to be mnong so many books and authors, and to get some very good deals, too.”

The idea for the festival occurred years ago,but nobody knew if it would succeed.Although book festivals were already popular in other US cities, would Los Angeles residents welcome one?“The citizens of the city are very unpredictable,”said one of the festival founders.

Passage Four

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date?

Many people are afraid to assert themselves(坚持己见).Dr.Robert Alberti, author of Stand Up, Speak Out,and Talk Back, thinks it’s because of their lack of confidence.“Our structure of organization tends to make people distrust themselves.”says Alberti.“There’s always a‘superior’around-a parent,a teacher,a boss-who‘knows better’.These‘superiors’often gain when they keep breaking at your self-image.”

But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer“assertiveness training”courses-AT for short. In the AT course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so.They learn to be aggressive without hurting people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear.A group taking an AT course will help the shy person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive-the need to share. The shy person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.

Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image.If someone you face is more“important”than you,you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense. You go by the other person’ s label. But,why should you?AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do,you can learn to speak out.

48.People are reluctant to talk back because____.

A.they have a poor self-image

B.they have not received AT courses

C.they have not grasped communication skills

D.they are not generous enough to share things

【答案】A

Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image,说明一个人是否愿意把自己的想法大胆的说出来取决于一个人的自我形象。故A正确

Passage Five

A wind tunnel is used for testing planes or plane models. In a wind tunnel air is blown over a plane ora model placed in a test section.Wind tunnel test sections are different in size depending on airflow speed requirements. Some low-speed tunnels have test sections large enough for a complete small plane. In the very high speed tunnels used for space testing, however, the model may be as small as a pencil.

There are two ways of feeding air to the test section. In the constant flow tunnel, airflow produced by electric fans is forced through the tunnel to the test section, then through another tunnel section back to the starting point for reuse. The other way involves storing high-pressure air in a box, sending it out by a controlling device to pass through the tunnel and test section into another box. This way is usually used for a very short period of high-speed airflow.

Wind tunnels are usually used to test planes before they are flown.Problems in a plane carl be found when it meets the high-speed airflow in the tunnel. For example,if the wings are built so that they would weaken at high speeds, this fact can be discovered in the tunnel, thus saving many lives and millions of dollars.

In a wind tunnel, scientists also find out how different planes will act at different speeds. They find out such things as how the air dives by the wing surfaces, how slowly a plane can fly before it starts to drop, and howfastit can climb.

52.Some wind tunnel sections are larger than others because____.

A.they are used for large planes

B.they can produce a stronger wind

C.they are built to conduct a high-speed test

D.the air in them flows at a lower speed

54.As mentioned in the last paragraph,a wind tunnel can be used to find out____.A.how fast a plane can rise

B.how smooth a plane’s surface is

C.how a plane lands in a strong wind

D.how a plane drops at a low height

【答案】A

【解析】这个句子and how fast it can climb.

55.What can we learn from the passage?

A.It is very expensive to build a wind tunnel.

B.Wind tunnels are very essential in testing planes.
