Smile of the Earth All over my garden I've planted nothing but roses, fragrant and--If looked at from afar--ablaze with colour like sunset clouds.I would be very happy if any one of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes.I trust that any friend of mine carrying the roses would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotion had been rekindled.A close friend came for a visit the other day.I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants, and for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to decorate her boudoir.I promised that the scent of the roses would be wafted far, far away. That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn't pick a single rose.I said there were so many of them that she could pick as many as she'd like to;I told her that I was not a florist and didn't make a living out of them. While saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she vehemently stopped me, crying no, no, no!To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut.Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy a smile so exhilarating? My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth--it is only because of the roses that it reveals an amazing and bright smile, and it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of men.Of late a friend of mine invited me to appreciate a Tang Dynasty vase that he was fortunate enough to have bought at an auction. The vase, with its slim neck, plump body, and fine little flowers on a blue and white background, has a noble shape and a rich colouring, elegant, refined, proud, poised, and supercilious, an extreme embodiment of the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty.I was filled with wonder to think that while everyone present was taking great care not to cause the slightest damage to the Tang treasure, it was to me nothing but an object made of clay.It had only become a piece of classic art after being baked in a china kiln. Both the exquisiteness of the boccaro teapots made in south China, and the shockingly beautiful sculptures by Clay Sculptor Zhang of Tianjin--aren't they all smiles of the earth? They are such exquisite treasures that--even if they look ugly, humble, plain, or whatever--they no doubt deserve respect and veneration. Now I understand that no-one, however ordinary, should be condemned to anonymity, and that anyone who adds a dash of colour to life deserves our respect.{解释} 1)泥土的微笑
Smile of the Earth
All over my garden I've planted nothing but roses, fragrant and--If looked at from afar--ablaze with colour like sunset clouds.I would be very happy if any one of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes.
I would be very happy if...;should是表示将来的一种可能性;for their homes看似与原文不符,但原文的“带......
I trust that any friend of mine carrying the roses would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotion had been rekindled.
A close friend came for a visit the other day.I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants, and for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to decorate her boudoir.I promised that the scent of the roses would be wafted far, far away.解析:“探望我”也可以译为came to visit me,但came for a visit更好,既然是come且visit,被访者当然就“我”了,这句也体现了英语介词多的特点。
That girl friend of mine。
“平素最喜欢”英语可以说she loves...,但更合乎习惯的说法是she's a lover of...,另如He's a good driver是说他开车开得好。
That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn't pick a single rose.
I said there were so many of them that she could pick as many as she'd like to;I told her that I was not a florist and didn't make a living out of them.
make a living out of: 从......
While saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she vehemently stopped me, crying no, no, no!
To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said.
With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut.Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy a smile so exhilarating?
My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth--it is only because of the roses that it reveals an amazing and bright smile, and it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of men.
Of late a friend of mine invited me to appreciate a Tang Dynasty vase that he was fortunate enough to have bought at an auction. The vase, with its slim neck, plump body, and fine little flowers on a blue and white background, has a noble shape and a rich colouring, elegant, refined, proud, poised, and supercilious, an extreme embodiment of the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty.
at an auction:这里用介词at,而不硬套中文用on。
I was filled with wonder to think that while everyone present was taking great care not to cause the slightest damage to the Tang treasure,解析:filled with wonder:心里觉得奇怪,很想知道。
it was to me nothing but an object made of clay.It had only become a piece of classic art after being baked in a china kiln.
“瓷中经典”也已隐含在the Tang treasure当中,因此就简单地译成了after being baked in a china kiln。
Both the exquisiteness of the boccaro teapots made in south China, and the shockingly beautiful sculptures by Clay Sculptor Zhang of Tianjin--aren't they all smiles of the earth?
解析:the shockingly beautiful sculptures by Clay Sculptor Zhang of Tianjin:中文可以很简洁地说“泥人张”,英文也可直接译成Clay Sculptor Zhang。
They are such exquisite treasures that--even if they look ugly, humble, plain, or whatever--they no doubt deserve respect and veneration.
Now I understand that no-one, however ordinary, should be condemned to anonymity, and that anyone who adds a dash of colour to life deserves our respect. 所以这里用了 should be condemned to anonymity。
中文的“刮目相看”是“用新的眼光看待”,此处意译为deserve our respect,因为将它理解为treat sb.with more respect比look at sb.with new eyes更好一些。
《泥土的微笑》英译 Smile of the Earth “泥土”一词并不是指“泥”,而是指“土”、“土地”,所以译为the earth。

“Misfortunes never come singly. In the winter of more than two years ago, grandma died and father lost his job.I left Beijing for Xuzhou to join father in hastening home to attend grandma‟s funeral.”
“When I met father in Xuzhou, the sight of the disorderly mess in the courtyard and the thought of grandma started tears trickling down my cheeks.”
“Between grandma‟s funeral and father‟s unemployment, our family was then in reduced circumstances.”
“He urged the waiter again and again to take good care of me, but still did not quite trust him.He hesitated for quite a while about what to do.”
“After some wavering, he finally decided that he himself would accompany me to the station.”
“Never mind!It won‟t do to trust guys like those hotel boys.”
“I was such a smart aleck that I frowned upon the way father was haggling and was on the verge of chipping in a few words when the bargain was finally clinched.”
“I quickly wiped them away lest he or others should catch me crying.”
“I, however, did not go back to my seat until his figure was lost among crowds of people hurrying to and fro and no longer visible.”
“I sniggered at father for being so impractical, for it was utterly useless to entrust me to those attendants, who cared for nothing but money.”
“I spread on the seat the brownish fur-lined overcoat he got tailor made for me.”
“He told me to be watchful on the way and be careful not to catch cold at night.”
“I watched him hobble towards the railway track in his black skullcap, black cloth mandarin jacket and dark blue cotton-padded cloth long gown.He had little trouble climbing down the railway track, but it was a lot more difficult for him to climb up that platform after crossing the railway track.”
“His hands held onto the upper part of the platform, his legs huddled up and his corpulent body tipped slightly towards the left, obviously making an enormous exertion.”
‟ “Go back to your seat.Don‟t leave your things alone.”
若直接译为“There‟s no one inside.”
“In recent years, both father and I have been living an unsettled life, and the circumstances of our family going from bad to worse.”
“东奔西走”译为“living an unsettled life.”
“The discouraging sate of affairs filled him with an uncontrollable feeling of deep sorrow, and his pent-up emotion had to find a vent. That is why even mere domestic trivialities would often make him angry.”
“忘却我的不好”译为“more forgiving towards me”,“forgiving”一词也很是地道。
其中“大约大去之期不远矣”一句,译作“Perhaps it won‟t be long before I depart this life.”
译为:“Oh, how I long to see him again!”
译作:“tears gushed from my eyes”,“gush”一词就有很快的意思。
a.题目中的“背影”是“the sight of father‟s back”;
b.“等他的背影混入来来往往的人里”:“…his figure was lost among crowds of people…”;
c.结尾处“在晶莹的泪光中,又看见那肥胖的,青布棉袍,黑布马褂的背影”:“I again saw the back of my father‟s corpulent form…”
a.“回家变卖典质”:“after arriving hone in Yangzhou”;
b.“ 第二日上午便须渡江到浦口”:“and was ferrying across the Yangtse river to Pukou the next morning……”;
c.“北京已来往过两三次”:“had already traveled on the Beijing-Pukou Railway a couple of times.” ;
d.“我走了,到那边来信”:“I must be going now.Don‟t forget to write me from Beijing!”
How long could I sustain? By Song Yue-hui There is a vast crowd of patients in the ordinary out-patient department in the hospital, but only a few in the special out-patient department, but the registration fee there costs 168 Yuan each time. The doctors there are all famous ones.Every time my mother sees a doctor, she stands in a queue for hours so that she is often too tired to sit down at last and her illness gets even worse.I could not bear my mother’s suffering so I tried to get in by a “back door” but failed.I had no way but to go to the special out-patient department. It was so quiet round there that one might feel a little horrified. The corridor there reflected cool gleams. The doctor in the room was reading a magazine and he kept reading while we went in.His eyes left the magazine till my mother sat down.My mother was illiterate so she did not know what this special department really was. What made her feel strange was that there were so few patients in this department so she felt worried about the doctor’s capability.Later on my mother knew doctors here were all good ones but it was so expensive to register, she looked even more anxious. She said that it was really unaffordable for us to see doctors here.Mother was told to have an operation. Before the operation the doctor gave a few prescriptions which we were demanded to buy in the pharmacy next to the gate of the hospital. These were self-paid medicines which were not covered by healthcare insurance. They were special medicines. The doctor saw my hesitation and said knowingly that I might just put it aside in case of economical difficulty. He said that he administered these medicines only for the good of my mother. Was this a test for my filial piety? My mother has brought me up and I would buy these medicines even at the cost of draining my last few pennies. The pharmacy was not a large one but its business was unusually prosperous.Incredibly a box of medicine, a few injections and some other acquisitions for the operation cost my tow month’s salaries.I thought my salary was not poor, but how could these people who earn less afford such expensive medicines? After my mother’s operation, the doctor continued to prescribe medicines which were also to be purchased in that pharmacy.Other relatives of patients like me dared not delay and went immediately to the pharmacy to buy these medicines with the doctor’s prescriptions.Every time when there was a queue they would try to insert themselves into the front of row for fear that the medicines would run out of stock before they bought it.There were eight patients in a ward and the sanitary condition was awful there. My mother had heart diseases and such an environment brought pressure upon her heart.I was afraid of accident incurred to my mother so I asked the doctor if it was possible to move her into a better ward. The doctor said that my mother might go to the special ward.Though the environment was good now but I was perturbed first because I hoped that my mother would convalesce soon. And secondly because I had no idea how much money I would spend for one day’s stay in this special ward.Tow days later I could not help but go to the nurse station to check my bill.Although psychologically I was fully prepared I still felt strained after I saw the amount. My god, it was so expensive that RMB looked just like pieces of ordinary paper. It had lost its original value.I sweated at once.I would like to have had my mother stay here longer till she could get up.But when I thought of the money running like water with the every passing minute I felt a little nervous. The doctor would present a set of program for follow-up treatment after my mother left the hospital.I had no way to estimate how much it would cost.Up till then I came to the strong belief that a serious illness could easily destroy a wage-owner’s family economy.

All over my garden I've planted nothing but roses, fragrant and if looked at from afar-ablaze with colour like sunset clouds.I would be very happy if any one of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes.I trust that any friend of nune carrying the roses would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotion had been rekindled.
A close friend came for a visit the other day, I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants, and for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to decorate her boudoir.I promised that the scent ofthe roses would be wafted far, far away.
That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn't pick a single rose.I said there were so many of them tbat she could pick as many as she'd like to, I told her that I was not a
florist and didn't make a living out of them. While saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she vehemently stopped me, crying no, no, no!
To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut.Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron hearted as to destroy a smile so exhilarating?
My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth-it is only because of the roses that it reveals an amazing and bright smile, and it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of men.
Of late a friend of mine i_nvited me to appreciate a Tang Dynasty vase that he was fortunate enough to have bought at an auction. The vase, with its slim neck, plump body, and fine little flowers on a blue and white background, has a noble shape and a rich colouring, elegant, refined, proud, poised, and supercilious, an extreme embodiment of the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty.I was filled with wonder to think that while everyone present was talang great care not to cause the
slightest damage to the Tang treasure, it was to me nothing but an object made of clay.It had only become a piece of classic art after being baked in a china kiln. Both the exqusiteness of the boccaro teapots made in south China, and the shockingly beautiful sculptures by Clay Sculptor Zhang of Tianjin aren't they all smiles of the earth? They are such exquisite treasures that-even if they look ugly, humble, plain, or whatever-they no doubt deserve respect and veneration.
Now I understand that no one, however ordinary, should be condemned to anonymity, and that anyone who adds a dash of colour to life deserves our respect.
